Theseus' Guide to Ruining a Perfectly Good Ship in a Bottle
A list made on the loosest association of words, with an even looser tie to this fanfiction
Stan
Give him an Amati model kit and he is happy as a clam. He's moded several already and resold them as "ghost ships" in bottles and "wreckage of a ghost ship" in a bottle for the ones Soos or Mabel drop.
Tumblr media
Mabel
Lego model of ship in a bottle. After its built she'll change out vingettes/scenery. Soos, Wendy, and Stan are deeply invested in the unfolding soap opera Mabel crafts with it.
Tumblr media
Dipper
Is really excited to make his first ship in a bottle, and he'll make one! Just as soon as he finishes reading a book on how to do it, and reads the other three he asked for his birthday. Maybe he'll go to the library to checkout the books the books he got used in the citation. He's going to build the ship, believe you me, he really isn't going to move onto something else in t minus 4 months. This ship? Getting built.
Tumblr media
Ford
"Oh you meant as in an actual ship? Hah!" Ford has been maintaining an excellent example of Darwin's "Beagle in a Bottle" experiment for years now NOT a replica of the HMS Beagle in a bottle you silly.

Bill
It's the 1940s, your run is just beginning but already you feel like your life is over because prom is in two weeks and you just know Arch is going to ask Beronica not you to go with him. Can you blame him? You're just good ol’ dependable Vetty, girl next door Arch's on again off again no-on again “let's not put labels on this” girlfriend. Beronica is everything you're not she wears short skirts which you also wear but it's different. She's cheer captain and you're… also cheer captain — sometimes your co-captain it depends on the issue. Anyways she's rich, and beautiful, and perfect, and wonderful, and if it wasn't for the fact she was a brunette you'd have nothing on her.
“Oh Pops! What am I going to do?” You whine to the man working the bar at the soda shop.
“Well it's as I always tell you crazy kids, answers aren't found at the bottom of an Egg Cream.”
“But they sure are delicious!” Your longtime friend Bottlehead — wearer of cool hats and, more recently, cooler shades —  stops eating table napkins long enough to quip.
“And how!” All three of you laugh before Bottlehead goes back to slurping down  plastic straws like they're spaghetti.
“If you want Arch to take you to the dance, just ask him yourself.” Pops suggests, like an out of touch square.
“This is the prom, Pops, not Sadie Hawkins!” You complain, pushing your half finished Egg Cream away.
“Besides, I tried. I think he’s avoiding me.” You add, sinking into your seat.
“Say! Why don't you go ask that cursed fortune telling machine at the abandoned fairgrounds?” Bottlehead suggests, reaching for your abandoned drink.
“Golly that's a great idea! Bottlehead, if your mouth wasn't full of glass I could kiss you!!!” Bottlehead suffers a hug from you instead as he continues to consume your discarded order. cup and all.
You sock hop out of the establishment and cross the street to the abandoned fairgrounds.
Hopping over the rusted turnstile and side stepping some police tape you make your way to the culturally insensitive but period accurate fortune telling machine. Feeding it one of your hard earned and always valuable pennies the automata jolts to life.
The words are garbled over the loud clacking of the doll's mouth, out of sync with the tinny audio. Which is fine, the opening number is an offensive milieu of ethnic stereotyping. The real magic is when you press the button with your wish in mind and the machine prints out the most accurate supernatural reading it can.
You know it's accurate because, unlike biological fortune tellers, machines don't care about sparing your feelings from the celestial forces that rule over you. Just the facts.
“Please tell me how to get Arch to ask me to the dance.” You whisper your wish before slapping your hand onto the golden glowing button and watch as your destiny is printed onto gold backed ticketape.
For a brief second you hear a faint whimsical giggle as you rip off your printed fortune.  Looking around you see no one in the abandoned fairgrounds.  It’s just you, the chalk outline you're standing on, the automaton with its outstretched hand to shake, and the police tape surrounding you.
“That’s odd,” you muse. “When did you move?” You ask but the better question is how did it move?  Because aside from the rudimentary motions reserved for nutcrackers the machine’s body was a plaster mold that had no joints to move.
Yet here it is, hand out in greeting.  No. Not greeting, a deal and if you keep over-analysing I am going to take it back.
“What?” You ask as the internal narrative becomes as structurally unsound as the White House during this time period — look it up.
You turn to go to the Daleriver Library — now certified communist book free — to do just that, then are reminded by the text that you still need to read your fortune for our readers!
“If you want to be with your one true… loves?” You pause to puzzle at this but not for any longer than it takes to read this sentence.  “... forever. Then shake my hand.” You Continue.
“Your friend, Bill?” You don’t know who that is but you bet he is really keen and neato to have a name like that. You feel really embarrassed that you don’t remember having a friend like that. It would be really rude to leave a pal hanging, especially when they went through all this trouble for you.
So you shake the cold hand of the automaton before you. You don’t register that the glass pane wasn’t there, that the hard resin arm moves like flesh— no, all your focus is on the bright gold cat eyes looking back at you and the return of a giggle that grows into an outright cackle.
Wind whips around you, police tape flying like ribbons caught in a tornado, and you stand still in the eye of it.
“Hiya Vetty,” The automaton greets, jaw held open like a snake— or like a smile, let’s not be rude.  “long time fan first time crossover. You and I have got a lot in common.” The machine continues but the tin from its voice box layers with the voice in the wind that has stopped laughing and now talks in sync with it.
You don’t try to speak, you want to, but I don’t need to write around your wants anymore.
“Both of our fandoms question our interest in men and we share the same banana yellow pantone. Me for my body, you for your hair and… eyes?” The voice coming from all around, you guess correctly that this is Bill — smarty that you are, that earns you a free can of brown meat! — finishes. You don’t know what he looks like exactly but from the description he sounds like a real dream boat.
“My eyes aren't —” You hold that thought and pop a squat in front of the fortune telling machine. You jimmy open the front and reach inside it.
“Bet you weren’t expecting so much organ meat?” You ask yourself but you're not the one talking.
You pull your red stained arm out of the warm pulsing mass before you to free a pristine glass bottle. In its reflection you see your mouth split into a painfully wide grin scrunching your now golden eyes, a mirror image to the automaton leering over you; below that you see a tiny version of Arch banging his fist against his transparent prison.
“Ever Dream of Jeannie kid?” Asks your new best friend, still borrowing your body and voice.
“Of course you don't! That's not for another 20 years!” Your hands uncork the top of the bottle.
The soft “tink” of glass tapping concrete reverberates in the abandoned fairground.  A moment passes in silence.
Then you see shoes.
“Two down,” Bottlehead says, bending down to grab you. If he hears you and Arch’s pleas he doesn’t care as he gently returns your bottle prison back into its warm nest of organs. Gold eyes look over slick sunglasses and give you a wink. “... one to go.”

𝚜𝚝𝚎𝚊𝚍𝚏𝚊𝚜𝚝 𝚏𝚘𝚞𝚗𝚍𝚊𝚝𝚒𝚘𝚗𝚜 ➺ 𝚓𝚘𝚞𝚛𝚗𝚊𝚕 𝚎𝚗𝚝𝚛𝚢 #10 (𝚙𝚊𝚛𝚝 1)
Tumblr media
anderson construction and landscaping had been parked outside your door since you returned home from university. as if the summer couldn't get any hotter, the business owner works overtime in your area. anderson is collecting new, loyal clients of your neighbors, cementing her permanence in your life for the next few months. what's to come of your girlish crush when she keeps showing up?
𝚠𝚊𝚛𝚗𝚒𝚗𝚐𝚜. 18+ (mdni); age-gap, young!reader, older!abby, butch!abby, slow-burn, suggestive language, thoughts of infidelity, ellie ft, smoking/drinking, mentions of parents, nickname: sweetheart, and modern au.
𝚊𝚗. guys, you're awesome that's for supporting me. i've recently stopped using grammarly for a more real writing experience. so if things are wonky, just know thats why! no more ai help.
♫ 𝚙𝚕𝚊𝚢𝚕𝚒𝚜𝚝. come see me by jill scott ♫
“Shit, what time is it?” She rubs her eyes.
“Almost 12, but lucky for you there are no clients on the schedule today. It’s a planning period, remember?” You said, suddenly nauseous.
Ms. Anderson’s hand grasped her chest and she slowly breathed herself out of the early chaos. In a poor attempt, she rakes a hand through gnarled hair and you stand with your arms crossed like an upset mother waiting for their daughter to explain a wild excursion.
“Right.” She managed.
“Nice robe.” You mutter sarcastically.
Abby’s face contorts in pure embarrassment as she grips her ribcage before scurrying into the hallway leaving you alone with the ghosts of last night. An empty bottle of red wine with a gold label sat on the coffee table in plain view. You scuff, literally, letting out a breath of disbelief because the things you felt and believed were now un-real. You slump down onto the couch face warm from a certain humiliation that you could only associate as conflating her looks and kindness for more. You did it again.
Abby walks out in a white Anderson and Co. t-shirt with the logo across her back. The fabric stretching across her traps, tightening around her muscles. You admire her ass in those dark wash jeans and her slick bun. Even as you were upset you couldn’t help but admire how her grays shimmered. “Want a cup?”
Her offer of coffee was tempting after the night you had with Ellie. Being stubborn would make you look even more like a child so you kindly accept with the intentions of not drinking it at all. You follow her into the kitchen and stand in silence, staring at the unwashed pots and empty glasses.
“I’ve been off my game, I had an unexpected visitor, I promise I’m more organized than this.” She sighed.
Unexpected visitor.
“It’s perfect that I’m here now then, isn’t it?” Your voice unusually timid.
She turns away from her machine and closes her eyes as if they weighed a ton. “It seems like once I gotcha, I lost all my senses.”
A beat fell between two and the coffee drip pulled at the thick tension as Ms. Anderson’s gaze fell on you. You crack a willful smile and then peer at the kitchen floor knowing you can’t hide from her here.
The time that you spend with Abby seems to go by quickly because by the time you check your phone it’s already 8:00 p.m. You press your hand to your forehead after looking through numbers and endless identical names, small square boxes on digital screens, it was straining on your eyes. You couldn't complain, you needed the distraction. After Ms. Anderson cleaned up her mess and you both settled into her office, the conversation and work flow clicked effortlessly. She listened when you spoke and took time to process every syllable, all while teaching you her customer management systems, and the basics of organizing a comprehensive schedule. The main priority today was allocating tasks to her staff for upcoming projects and seeing Ellie’s name on the roaster made your stomach flip.
“Listen, I was thinking last night, this is pretty monumental for me as I am shifting into a new level of A&C and you joining me, maybe if you’re not busy we can celebrate?” She asked.
“Oh,” Is all you manage.
“Or not? I see you’re tired and had a long day, unpaid time with the boss, I get it.” Her instant defeat was a little adorable.
“No, no, Ms. Anderson I would like that, I just wish I wore something nicer.” You sigh.
“I think this looks amazing.” She said drinking you in.
You arrive at one of the few standing lesbian bars in the state that invited all female jazz musicians to provide the entertainment. The building was brick and seemed small but spanned all the way down the plot, housing a wide parking lot, shockingly full with cars on a weekday.
“I won’t tell you how long I’ve been comin’ here.” She smiles putting the car into park, flaunting those kind crowfeet.
Slipping out of the truck and walking on the gravel you started to hear the grumblings of a drum kit and wonder what the hell you’ve gotten yourself into. As expected she opens the door for you and welcomes you into a private sliver of her world. Given Ms. Anderson’s past of being a bartender it made sense that she’d take you somewhere like this, but it being a lesbian bar, made it all the more interesting. Women, mostly older, scattered around in two main parts, the dining area with small duo only tables, or the bar that was cornered by a stage and dance floor. You had never seen so many lesbians in one place before, studs and butches vying for attention from femmes flaunting their silky legs and ready bodies.
“Let’s have a bite. I promise it’s nothing like you had in college, sweetheart.”
Self seating was a blessing as Ms. Anderson picked the prime seat, a booth big enough for two. You slip into the far end and Abby follows suit and reaching to pull out her glasses, but before she could you stop her. “I could read it for you.”
Her brow rises and she sinks down a bit to spread her legs wider. Wider into yours. Her thighs brush yours and it was sweet, so sweet. The menu was held in a black, clothed book and the options spread from appetizers to dessert. A waiter, about your age, came over with Barbie pink lip and electric blue eyeshadow. “Hi, what do you want to drink?”
No niceties just direct and you liked that.
“I’ll have an old fashion and whatever she would like.” Ms. Anderson smiled at you.
“I will have… that.”
The waiter looked at you shocked and so did your counterpart. Back to the menu you lean in even though the music was a soft tickle of a riffing piano. “So, how hungry are you?” Looking up into her eyes was dangerous but you couldn’t help it. Abby chewed on the corner of her mouth and shrugged.
“Hungry enough to eat,”
You order two appetizers that serve as your meal. Once the drinks came out Abby turned towards you and raised a glass to make a toast. “For my very first and best-est assistant, thank you.”
In unison the cups come to your lips with unwavering eye contact. Your eyes dipped over the rim to watch the handsome woman lick her lips to digest the flavor fully. Your body jolts from the immediate heartburn, this drink was nothing familiar, which made her laugh.
“You didn’t have to get that.”
“I know, jus’ something new when I’m with you. Plus, I need something stronger than a cider right now.” You add.
“You’re okay right?”
You exhale allowing a tug at your lips, “I will be.”
The pianist concluded its set before another large brass band started to infiltrate the stage.
“I would enjoy it if you joined me to watch the band.” She muttered, her words a bit stiff as if she had practiced them first.
“Of course.”
The image of Ms. Anderson, young and reckless flashed in front of my eyes as she swayed alongside you to the silky sound of the sax. The woman’s lower body rocks in opposition to her shoulders, making a good synchronous bounce to come about. Slightly shocked you watch her slyly rock side to side balancing another thick scotch in her left hand, eyes locked in on the band. Her eyes fluttering, a very subtle indication that she’s nearing intoxication.
Your eyes pace the room, searching for something other than Abby’s nose, that you can’t help but think about. Those lips sat perfectly between it and her chin, pink and damp, stinging from her top shelf beverage. Attempting to appear normal you step side to side and bob your head as the tempo increased. Couples begin swirling around you and Abby and suddenly you were transported to a different era. Legs thrusted out in kicks and ball changes which made your heart bounce.
Abby leaned back slightly and lifter her glass in an admirable jeer. A slow figure closes in on your left side, taller than Abigail by a few inches and absolutely lofty. The woman had a head full locs, split down the middle, cascading down to her shoulders and skin so dark it had a sheen under the blue stage lights, as if she was glowing. She was probably closer to thirty and her confident was exuberant, you couldn’t help but lean in as she cut past all the flailing limbs.
“You’re looking pretty nervous,” She chuckles in your ear.
Her warm breath tickled you and as you adjusted to her body next to yours, you notice Ms. Anderson take an awkward sip, chucking a tight grin in your direction.
“I need something to make me… less nervous, I suppose.” You reply, nearly yelling into her ear as she bends down, accepting your hand on her shoulder.
“Your girl isn’t helping?”
“Boss.”
It stung to say that, especially with you and Ellie on the fence and an undeniable crush on Ms. Anderson, being in this position felt weird.
“Shit, that makes more sense, would you like to dance?”
She was so gentle with her large hand resting just above your hip ever so. You look at Abby who locks in on the stage while nursing the last few sips of drink.
“Teach me?” You say, as she tugs you into her hips and dips you towards the ground.
Her strength made you yelp over the clattering of instruments. Directly under a sudden white spotlight, her deep brown eyes focused into view, gold hoop in her nose, and a wide mouth that she wet slightly with the tip of her tongue.
Once pulled back up, the audience began clapping and the next song began without missing a beat. Your new friend spun you around and twisted you so quick that before it registered that you could even move like this. Something opened up inside of you like a newfound freedom beckoning you to simply let go, which you did.

The Insanity of One's Mind
Episode Title: Treehouse Rules
Staring: . . .
Tumblr media Tumblr media
> Characters mentioned/appear in the episode, that don't star in it, will be properly introduced in their respective episode.
______ . . . ______ . . . ______ . . . ______ . . . ______
In the windy day of January, a rickety treehouse, perched precariously on the town's biggest oak tree, groans against the wind. It told tales of numerous storms and winds survived, despite the obvious scorched spots in its walls. It suspiciously smells of burnt marshmallows and rubber tires. Upbeat, slightly off-key whistling can be heard from within the treehouse. Its inside is somewhat more polished than its exterior, but just as disorganized. Though, 'disorganized' couldn't be the word these two could use.
A wall is decorated by tacked-up posters of various fires and shoplifting targets and another is decorated by stolen road signs nailed with rusty nails. An crate, overflowing with a stack of flammable objects, sits on the left corner that has seen better days. A wooden table, its green paint fading away, is covered with newspapers dating back to 1970 and a collection of half-eaten candy bars organized by colors. Next to the table is a box closed by a monstrous amount of duct tape, labeled 'Fireworks (Do Not Touch, Seriously Tap)'.
In the center, a chess board stands on the edge of a whimsically carved stool, with odd mishmash pieces meticulously arranged, threaning to fall. Two figures sit in front of each on the sides of the chessboard, their dark and light brown fur and striped tails brighten by the morning sunlight. Tap is chewing on a matchstick perched on his mouth, his eyes squinted in concentration. His tail swings calmly from side to side, a habit he had since a young age. Tup is absentmindedly twirling one of the stolen road signs around, displaying a defaced 'STOP' sign that now reads 'WAVE!'. A plate of almost finished strawberry pastries laid on the floor, its sweet aroma twirling in the air, grabbing Tup's attention more than the game.
A blue, chipped bottle cap, carefully held by Tap's claws, intended to be his paw, hovered over the chessboard, ultimately landing on a square. Tap smirks, a small chuckle of victory escapes his lips, his eyes shining with stars. "Haha! Checkmake, brother!" He declares, his voice raspy from years of inhaling smoke. He plucks the matchstick from his mouth, pressed and dragged it along the wooden floor, lighting it. He plucks it back to his mouth. "Looks like your reign as champion is over."
Tup rolls his eyes, the defaced road sign slowing to a stop. "Beginner's luck. That's all it was. Your paw was clearly out of bounds. Rule 73, paragraph B, subsection 4; 'All paw movements must originate from within the player's designated sone'."
He knew it's a lie. He wrote the rule book himself, he knows what's inside it. He memorized every single line he put on the pages. "There's no rule like that!" Tap scoffs, moving a clawed finger to point at the chessboard. "You made that up!"
"Did not!" Tup retorts, slamming the road sign against the table, the pieces wobbling. "It's right here in the official Treehouse Rules of Chess!" He gestures vaguely towards a stack of papers balanced on a pile of stolen hubcaps.
"Those are instructions for my Rube Goldberg machine!" Tap exclaims, grabbing the papers and tossing them aside. A hubcap rolls off the pile, narrowly missing the crate labeled 'Fireworks'. "Seriously, Tup, get your facts straight for once!"
"Okay, maybe I misremembered the exact location of the rule." Tup concedes, a mischievous glint in his eyes. "But the spirit of the rule remains! Your move was illegal!"
"The only thing illegal around here is your obsession with bending the rules to your advantage." Tap retorts, leaning back in his stool with arms crossed, eyes narrowed. "You're just jealous because I finally beat you."
Tup stands up, knocking over his stool with a clang, hand on his chest. "Jealous? Please! I let you win. I was feeling generous." He moves towards to strawberry pastries.
"You? Generous? You're about as generous as a swarm of locusts!" Tap scoffs, snatching the last pastry from the plate before Tup can reach it. He shoves the whole thing into his mouth at once, crumbs scattering across his parka.
Tup's eyes narrow. "That was mine! I had my eye on that one!"
"Finders keepers." Tap mumbles through a mouthful of strawberry filling.
That was the last straw. Tup lunges for Tap, aiming for the pastry-filled mouth. A scuffle ensues, sending the table rocking back and forth. The chess pieces tumble to the floor, scattering across the room. The chessboard slides off the stool, crashing onto the floorboards with a loud thud. The defaced road sign clatters to the ground, the 'WAVE!' mocking their childish squabble.
"Get off me, you kleptomaniac!" Tap yells, trying to pry Tup off and shove him away.
"Give me back my pastry, you pyro!" Tup retorts, pulling and clawing at Tap's parka.
Their wrestling match careens through the treehouse, a chaotic dance of flailing limbs and angry snarls. They stumble against the pile of stolen hubcaps, sending them rolling across the floor like metallic tumbleweeds. Lost in their little fight, the twins don't notice the approaching footsteps — or rather stomping — from outside of the treehouse. They're jolted out of their argument when a harsh voice yells out.
"Hey! Keep it down up there, you jackasses!"
They pause their scuffle. The twins freeze, momentarily forgetting their pastry-fueled rage, they exchange nervous glances. Reluctantly, Tap moves over to the treehouse's entrance, only consisting of a trapdoor. He pries it open and look outside. Below on the ground, stands a tall figure dressed in his jammies. Skittles, the ever grumpy honey badger, his black and white fur ruffled and his eyes redder than they were yesterday. A rooster is held under his arm like a football. "Some of us are trying to sleep, you overgrown trash pandas!" Skittles continues to yell, his face turning an even deeper shade of crimson, a vein throbbing in his forehead. The rooster lets out a nervous cluck, flapping its wings weakly. "Dude, it's 11 AM. Why are you still in your pajamas?" Tap retorts, immediately regretting his smart-mouth remark. Skittles' glare intensifies.
"That's none of your fucking business! And it's because of you two that I can't get any sleep! The whole damn town can hear you fighting like a pair of rabid dogs!"
"We weren't fighting! We were... strategizing!" Tup yells from behind Tap, trying to salvage the situation.
Skittles raises a skeptical eyebrow. "Really? That sounded a lot like someone was about to lose a few layers of fur."
Tap sighs, running a paw through his fur. "Look, Skittles, we're sorry. We didn't mean to wake you up. We were just having a... spirited debate about the rules of chess."
Skittles scoffs, rolling his eyes. "I highly doubt that. Last time I checked, chess didn't involve throwing hands and yelling about pastries."
"Details, details." Tup mutters under his breath.
Skittles pinches the bridge of his nose, trying to calm himself down. "Just... keep it down, okay? I swear, if I hear another peep out of you two, I'm coming up there and make you regret the day you were born."
Tap and Tup exchange horrified glances. That was a threat they took very seriously. "Understood." Tap says quickly, giving Skittles a strained smile. "We'll be quiet as mice."
Skittles glares at them one last time before turning around and stomping back towards his house, muttering about inconsiderate neighbors and the eternal struggle for a decent night's sleep. His rooster lets out a relieved squawk as they disappear from view. Tap closes the trapdoor, leaning against it with a sigh. "Well, that was close."
Tup nods in agreement, a sheepish look on his face. "Maybe we should try to keep it down a little next time."
"Yeah." Tap says, surveying the chaotic scene around him. "And maybe we should clean up this mess before Skittles decides to pay us another visit."

Across a sterile white table in a windowless room, I’m introduced to a woman in her forties. She has a square jaw and blonde hair that has been pulled back from her face with a baby-blue scrunchie. “The girls call me Marmalade,” she says, inviting me to use her prison nickname. Early on a Wednesday morning, Marmalade is here, in a Finnish prison, to demonstrate a new type of prison labor.
The table is bare except for a small plastic bottle of water and an HP laptop. During three-hour shifts, for which she’s paid €1.54 ($1.67) an hour, the laptop is programmed to show Marmalade short chunks of text about real estate and then ask her yes or no questions about what she’s just read. One question asks: “is the previous paragraph referring to a real estate decision, rather than an application?”
“It’s a little boring,” Marmalade shrugs. She’s also not entirely sure of the purpose of this exercise. Maybe she is helping to create a customer service chatbot, she muses.
In fact, she is training a large language model owned by Metroc, a Finnish startup that has created a search engine designed to help construction companies find newly approved building projects. To do that, Metroc needs data labelers to help its models understand clues from news articles and municipality documents about upcoming building projects. The AI has to be able to tell the difference between a hospital project that has already commissioned an architect or a window fitter, for example, and projects that might still be hiring.
Around the world, millions of so-called “clickworkers” train artificial intelligence models, teaching machines the difference between pedestrians and palm trees, or what combination of words describe violence or sexual abuse. Usually these workers are stationed in the global south, where wages are cheap. OpenAI, for example, uses an outsourcing firm that employs clickworkers in Kenya, Uganda, and India. That arrangement works for American companies, operating in the world’s most widely spoken language, English. But there are not a lot of people in the global south who speak Finnish.
That’s why Metroc turned to prison labor. The company gets cheap, Finnish-speaking workers, while the prison system can offer inmates employment that, it says, prepares them for the digital world of work after their release. Using prisoners to train AI creates uneasy parallels with the kind of low-paid and sometimes exploitive labor that has often existed downstream in technology. But in Finland, the project has received widespread support.
“There's this global idea of what data labor is. And then there's what happens in Finland, which is very different if you look at it closely,” says Tuukka Lehtiniemi, a researcher at the University of Helsinki, who has been studying data labor in Finnish prisons.
For four months, Marmalade has lived here, in Hämeenlinna prison. The building is modern, with big windows. Colorful artwork tries to enforce a sense of cheeriness on otherwise empty corridors. If it wasn’t for the heavy gray security doors blocking every entry and exit, these rooms could easily belong to a particularly soulless school or university complex.
Finland might be famous for its open prisons—where inmates can work or study in nearby towns—but this is not one of them. Instead, Hämeenlinna is the country’s highest-security institution housing exclusively female inmates. Marmalade has been sentenced to six years. Under privacy rules set by the prison, WIRED is not able to publish Marmalade’s real name, exact age, or any other information that could be used to identify her. But in a country where prisoners serving life terms can apply to be released after 12 years, six years is a heavy sentence. And like the other 100 inmates who live here, she is not allowed to leave.
When Marmalade first arrived, she would watch the other women get up and go to work each morning: they could volunteer to clean, do laundry, or sew their own clothes. And for a six hour shift, they would receive roughly €6 ($6.50). But Marmalade couldn’t bear to take part. “I would find it very tiring,” she says. Instead she was spending long stretches of time in her cell. When a prison counselor suggested she try “AI work,” the short, three-hour shifts appealed to her, and the money was better than nothing. “Even though it’s not a lot, it’s better than staying in the cell,” she says” She’s only done three shifts so far, but already she feels a sense of achievement.
This is one of three Finnish prisons where inmates can volunteer to earn money through data labor. In each one, there are three laptops set up for inmates to take part in this AI work. There are no targets. Inmates are paid by the hour, not by their work’s speed or quality. In Hämeenlinna, around 20 inmates have tried it out, says Minna Inkinen, a prison work instructor, with cropped red hair, who sits alongside Marmalade as we talk. “Some definitely like it more than others”. When I arrive at the prison on a Wednesday morning, the sewing room is already busy. Inmates are huddled over sewing machines or conferring in pairs over mounds of fabric. But the small room where the AI work takes place is entirely empty until Marmalade arrives. There are only three inmates in total who regularly volunteer for AI shifts, Inkinen says, explaining that the other two are currently in court. “I would prefer to do it in a group,” says Marmalade, adding that she keeps the door open so she can chat with the people sewing next door, in between answering questions.
Those questions have been manually written in an office 100 kilometers south of the prison, in a slick Helsinki coworking space. Here, I meet Metroc’s tall and boyish founder and CEO, Jussi Virnala. He leads me to a stiflingly hot phone booth, past a row of indoor swings, a pool table, and a series of men in suits. It’s an exciting week, he explains, with a grin. The company has just announced a €2 million ($2.1 million) funding round which he plans to use to expand across the Nordics. The investors he spoke with were intrigued by the company’s connection to Finland’s prisons, he says. “Everyone was just interested in and excited about what an innovative way to do it,” says Virnala. “I think it’s been really valuable product-wise.”
It was Virnala’s idea to turn to the prisons for labor. The company needed native Finnish speakers to help improve its large language model’s understanding of the construction-specific language. But in a high-wage economy like Finland, finding those data laborers was difficult. The Finnish welfare system’s generous unemployment benefits leaves little incentive for Finns to sign up to low-wage clickwork platforms like Amazon’s Mechanical Turk. “Mechanical Turk didn’t have many Finnish-language workers,” says Virnala. At the same time, he adds, automatic translation tools are still no good at Finnish, a language with only 5 million native speakers.
When Virnala pitched his idea to Pia Puolakka, head of the Smart Prison Project at Finland’s prison and probation agency, she was instantly interested, she says. Before the pandemic, another Finnish tech company called Vainu had been using prisoners for data labor. But Vainu abruptly pulled out after a disagreement between cofounders prompted Tuomas Rasila, who had been in charge of the project, to leave the company.
By the time Virnala approached her with his proposal in 2022, Puolakka was eager to resurrect the AI work. Her job is to try and make the relationship between Finnish prisons and the internet more closely resemble the increasingly digital outside world. So far, she has been installing laptops in individual cells so inmates can browse a restricted list of websites and apply for permission to make video calls. She considers data labor just another part of that mission.
The aim is not to replace traditional prison labor, such as making road signs or gardening. It’s about giving prisoners more variety. Data labeling can only be done in three-hour shifts. “It might be tiring to do this eight hours a day, only this type of work,” she says, adding that it would be nice if inmates did the data labeling alongside other types of prison labor. “This type of work is the future, and if we want to prepare prisoners for life outside prison, a life without crime, these types of skills might be at least as important as the traditional work types that prisons provide,” she says.
But how much data labeling offers inmates skills that are transferable to work after prison is unclear. Tuomas Rasila, the now estranged cofounder of Vainu, who managed the prison project there for a year, admits he has no evidence of this; the project wasn’t running for long enough to collect it, he says. “I think asking people, who might feel outside of society, to train the most high-tech aspect of a modern society is an empowering idea.”
However, others consider this new form of prison labor part of a problematic rush for cheap labor that underpins the AI revolution. “The narrative that we are moving towards a fully automated society that is more convenient and more efficient tends to obscure the fact that there are actual human people powering a lot of these systems,” says Amos Toh, a senior researcher focusing on artificial intelligence at Human Rights Watch.
For Toh, the accelerating search for so-called clickworkers has created a trend where companies are increasingly turning to groups of people who have few other options: refugees, populations in countries gripped by economic crisis—and now prisoners.
“This dynamic is a deeply familiar one,” says Toh. “What we are seeing here is part of a broader phenomenon where the labor behind building tech is being outsourced to workers that toil in potentially exploitative working conditions.”
Toh is also skeptical about whether data labor can help inmates build digital skills. “There are many ways in which people in prison can advance themselves, like getting certificates and taking part in advanced education,” he says. “But I'm skeptical about whether doing data labeling for a company at one euro per hour will lead to meaningful advancement.” Hämeenlinna prison does offer inmates online courses in AI, but Marmalade sits blank-faced as staff try to explain its benefits.
Science
Your weekly roundup of the best stories on health care, the climate crisis, genetic engineering, robotics, space, and more. Delivered on Wednesdays.
By the time I meet Lehtiniemi, the researcher from Helsinki University, I’m feeling torn about the merits of the prison project. Traveling straight from the prison, where women worked for €1.54 an hour, to Metroc’s offices, where the company was celebrating a €2 million funding round, felt jarring. In a café, opposite the grand, domed Helsinki cathedral, Lehtiniemi patiently listens to me describe that feeling.
But Lehtiniemi’s own interviews with inmates have given him a different view—he’s generally positive about the project. On my point about pay disparity, he argues this is not an ordinary workforce in mainstream society. These people are in prison. “Comparing the money I get as a researcher and what the prisoner gets for their prison labor, it doesn't make sense,” he says. “The only negative thing I’ve heard has been that there’s not enough of this work. Only a few people can do it,” he says, referring to the limit of three laptops per prison.
“When we think about data labor, we tend to think about Mechanical Turk, people in the global south or the rural US,” he says. But for him, this is a distinct local version of data labor, which comes with a twist that benefits society. It’s giving prisoners cognitively stimulating work—compared to other prison labor options—while also representing the Finnish language in the AI revolution.
Without this kind of initiative, Lehtiniemi worries that non-English languages are being locked out of this next generation of technology. Smart speakers still struggle to understand Finnish dialects. “Not all Finnish people speak English very well, so there's a need for these local forms of data labeling as well,” Lehtiniemi says. Metroc isn’t the only company that has been forced to get creative about finding Finnish data labor. In 2011, the national library created a game to incentivize volunteers to help digitize its archive. In 2020, broadcaster YLE teamed up with Helsinki University and the state development company VAKE to ask volunteers to donate recordings of them speaking Finnish.
There is a sense in Finland that the prison project is just the beginning. Some are worried it could set a precedent that could introduce more controversial types of data labeling, like moderating violent content, to prisons. “Even if the data being labeled in Finland is uncontroversial right now, we have to think about the precedent it sets,” says Toh. “What stops companies from outsourcing data labeling of traumatic and unsavory content to people in prison, especially if they see this as an untapped labor pool?”
It's also not clear whether labor conditions in Finland's prisons—which famously focus on rehabilitation—could be replicated in other countries with a less progressive approach to justice. In the US, 76 percent of prisoners report that prison labor is mandatory, according to civil rights group, the ACLU. “The prison system in the United States is very, very different from what we have in Finland or Nordic countries. It's a completely different idea,” says Rasila. “In Finland, there is an exclusively positive feeling around the project because everyone knows that this is very voluntary.”
AI companies are only going to need more data labor, forcing them to keep seeking out increasingly unusual labor forces to keep pace. As Metroc plots its expansion across the Nordics and into languages other than Finnish, Virnala is considering whether to expand the prison labor project to other countries. “It’s something we need to explore,” he says.
