My book of the year
This book changes totally my books preferences. I used not to like books about self discovery, motivations, lessons/advice and psychology. But I guess everything can have its first time and Good Timing is the best add-in. It was a random thing that I ended up reading then loving this book so much that I enjoyed reading it very slowly. So many things to learn and practice from this book that I think it is too much to try to summarize what do I get from reading “The 7 habits of highly effective people", Stephen R. Covey. So, I will just try to recap the main ideas of the book is about and something that makes me think a lot. I also mark some pages that I like according to each subject I talk about.
Part 1: DEPENDANCE
Habit 1: Be proactive
I read this habit very very slow because before I thought I’m pretty active and always the person with solutions when it comes a challenge. I realize that I'm more being reactive, and being reactive and proactive are totally different. While being reactive makes me feel like I can handle things, being proactive relieves my mind and helps me to truly stay calm and look at things from my cores. When I DO something, it is always my CHOICE, my DECISION, because I CHOOSE to make it happen. I never HAVE to do anything, even if sometimes it appears clearly that I don't really have a choice, it is still my decision. Even the thought that I have no choice is also my decision to think that way. In other words, blaming the outside forces, other people or circumstances is what I do sometimes and still have been doing it. I have such a hard time projecting all that into my current situation. I even have to separate each event in my life into sections, put it in order so I can start thinking clearer. And it can't be anything more correct. I see dilemma in a different way and somehow I find peace in my head. Can't describe how nice and light that feeling is. [p.79]. Speaking of that, being proactive also means being more tolerate with others' weaknesses. What do I really gain by pointing out what's so bad about a person in a fight? [p.90]. Feeling right (nah, I don’t need it), shut them up (may be), and make them feel worse about themselves (no, absolutely don't want that). To align that with my personality, I must be convinced that being proactive is something so powerful yet so necessary to fulfill myself. One thing though, being proactive doesn't mean I can control the consequences and mistakes. This is a whole another spectrum that I think for me, being wiser with more courage will help.
Habit 2: Begin with the end in mind
[p120] shows me the tendency I have in defining my Center of concern (Circle of Influence). I don't really come from the principles but being affected so much by others’ thoughts and feelings, and words (haizz). The fact is the round and balanced circle means to balance the Security - Wisdom - Guidance - Power. I don't follow the perfection, so I don't really believe in the ultimate perfect round circle. What I know is I freak out every time either of those 4 things dominates the others. It means, I forget the WHY, as known as the value(s) of any decision I make at the first place. It happens to me when I'm so upset even though I have a good intention, but I didn't feel like that intention gets to anywhere. To be honest, realize the problem and know how to deal with it is kind of difficult sometimes (well, most of the times), but it is nice to know what do I lack of when I’m frustrated about things. Actually, I kind of start over all the unsolved thoughts just writing this habit now. The good thing is I don't try to solve all the problems just by reading a book, also, I want to make it a journey to see how do I see and do things differently so, there will be more time to define the Circle of Influence and to keep myself up with balancing the 4 aspects to make my circle round, or not too un-round :).
One thing I like a lot when reading this habit is a magical sentence of Visualization and Affirmation [p.133]. “A good affirmation has 5 basic ingredients: it's personal, positive, present tense, visual and emotional.” What I want to say is like I'm (personal) so grateful (emotional) for the love from my fiancee and how we are trying (present tense) to remind each other that's the reason that makes us happy (positive). Once I say that sentence, it is so easy to visualize how our love is, how crazy it is sometimes but also how beautiful the feeling is and can lead to. To be honest, I feel so guilty for the mistakes that I made too. Meanwhile, it is nice to be able to have this magical sentence to lift up my mind and my mood. That is how the end of my mind wants to start.
Habit 3: Put first thing first
I’m surprised a little by seeing I didn't have any mark or note from there. And I realize that everything about this habit is what I need to know and keep practicing. Wow, so hard really to be smart about where and how to put first thing first. I’m nervous yet excited to see how I train myself to nail this habit. Basically, always draw that quadrant in my mind, and try to focus on the quadrant II: Important but not urgent things. I have been in Quadrant IV and III for a while, and obviously I'm so bored of that that leads to some depressions.
I'm starting to know when to say ‘no' and I hope to be able to keep it up so first, there will be no waste time on redundant actions, second, I can be more independent mentally, in the meaning that I don't have to feel bad or guilty when denying something.
Part 2: INDEPENDANCE
I guess I enjoy this part pretty much, especially the part about the Emotional Bank Account. This section isn’t belonged to any habit but it covers all the habits in this part like a core to begin with an effective mindset to really get into the habits of this part.
Stephen talks about a consistent deposit into the emotional bank account in marriage. It hits me right away since I see myself in the problems he mentions and makes me realize how regretful, even silly the “marriage fights" are sometimes. [p.189].
“Quick fix is a mirage" [p.190]. The problems themselves are not as critical as the way each individual solve them. All it takes is to be patient. Patient to recognize the problem, patient to look at it as a challenge rather than a bothersome thing, patient to listen to yourself and to understand others' point of view, and, patient to set aside the differences to treasure the relationship more.
I'm highly interested in the 6 majors deposits:
1/ Understanding the individual
2/ Attending to the little things: totally love this. When I read it there's a loud “yay" screams inside my head. I feel being understood, that all these times that I appreciate so much little things around me aren't just delusional. Because, little things matter. Little things are like the baby plants that require some carings to grow and be beautiful.
3/ Keeping commitments
4/ Clarifying expectations
5/ Showing personal integrity. “Be loyal to those who are not present".
6/ Apologizing sincerely when you make a withdrawal. My partner did that so much better than me. I silently learn it from him and hope will be better about that too. It is not that I feel losing face saying sorry, it is more of my stubborn character to admit that my mindset can be wrong sometimes.
Habit 4: Think Win/Win
The Win/Win attitude is not something new to me yet it is helpful to go in deeper understanding of the concept. Think Win/Win needs to be more than just a concept, it can start from a Win/Win character. And to do that, being a person with integrity (honesty), maturity and a strong mentality are indispensable. Next, the Win/Win character will lead to a Win/Win relationship where both sides respect, understand or try to understand from others' side. And the obvious result is a Win/Win agreement when the actions sync to the mutual benefits.
Habit 5: Seek first to understand, then to be understood
I feel like before reading this book, I have that thought in mind but forget it most of the time, especially when I'm too focus on my problems. It is easier to say to have an effective communication we should have an empathic listening skill than to apply it into the real problem. It is because we tend to project things others say to you into yourself, your own experience and understanding. [p.240]. It takes me sometime to truly understand what does it mean because I feel like I have been doing it wrong when I really feel the pain in the sad stories my friends told me by thinking of my situations. For Stephen, empathic listening means listening with intent to understand. It means, let’s say to pretend, that you are a blank page, you listen to the first time, without experience, without expect or assume that you get everything they say. In other words, listen with the most open mind, with the intention to First to Understand.
From the point of view, it is necessary to distinguish between empathy and sympathy. “Sympathy is a form of agreement, a form of judgment" [p.240]. Meanwhile, empathy is not about agreeing or not, is more to fully, deeply understand the person emotionally and intellectually without judgment or prejudice.
Another as important part as “seek to understand" is “seek to be understood". It appears that the ability to speak out is the key. But not really. It takes courage to seek to be understood, since a person actually has more than 1 layer of self, called ethos, pathos, logos. [p.255]. While ethos is the personal credibility (what people see when they look at/think of you), pathos focuses on feeling, to be able to see and feel others' feeling. Logos meanwhile is about the logic or reasoning in the conversation, in another word, know how to do presentation. Given those layers, a person needs to really consider in what extend they want other to hear and to know. That reminds me of the fact that if you want everybody to know how good you are at work, you need to get out there and get a job first since nobody will go all the way to find you, especially there are a lot of potential talents around. If you want to be understood, do your homework, listen to yourself and make a good speech. That's the best way for people to be able to hear you.
Habit 6: Synergize
This habit is something I don't really learn much from right now. May be because I stay focus more on other aspects now that I have an impression that this is just a summary of other habits. Since I will come back and read this book again eventually, I think it is ok now to take a note on that and move on.
Habit 7: Sharpen the saw
What I learn from this habit is the 4 dimensions of renewal
It is interesting to me to find out that an aspect of mental renewal is planning. Most of my time I spend on mental aspect I believe, and somehow I find myself enjoy discovering that mental part of myself. Also, this habit encourages me to put in order things I do everyday that I didn't put name on it. The feeling is just shifted when I can define what is I am doing.

#stephenrcovey #liderazgo #Leadership #coaching #coachingequipos #altoremdimiento #desarrollopersonal #crecimientopersonal #cambio #creatingabetterworld #cambiandoelmundo https://www.instagram.com/p/CaZrYESrJ0-/?utm_medium=tumblr

Oh, and of course I nipped to Waterstones while I was in town. These self help books were recommended to me recently so I’d decided to treat myself. I’ve got a trial shift for a copywriter job on Tuesday and am about to start a 4 week trial to be a volunteer writer for an online publication. So I had to reward myself! #newbooks #bookhaul #minihaul #minibookhaul #theroadlesstravelled #mscottpeck #the7habitsofhighlyeffectivepeople #stephenrcovey #selfcare #selfhelp #selfhelpbooks #waterstones #waterstoneswakefield #wakefield #treatyourself https://www.instagram.com/p/CRZOENADIYA/?utm_medium=tumblr

Let's tackle this stack • These are all books I have on my shelf that I have not read. Some of them I started few times, but never finished and honestly that's bugging me a lot. It would be much better if I knew how to simply DNF the book, but..... At one point I was thinking not to get any other books, not even from library, before I finish with these, but lets be honest... that is not going to happen. . . How many books is on your shelf, waiting to be read? . . #wutheringheights #emilybronte #circe #madelinemiller #warandpeace #leotolstoy #7habitsofhighlyeffectivepeople #stephenrcovey #thebeautifulanddamned #fscottfitzgerald #lesmiserables #victorhugo #milkman #annaburns #allthelightwecannotsee #anthonydoerr #10percenthappier #danharris #alittlelife #hanyayanagihara #sonsandlovers #dhlawrence #bookstack #tbr #book #bookstagramusa #balkanbookstagram #bookstagramcommunity #bookstagram #igreads https://www.instagram.com/p/B7EU_mfgnYm/?igshid=1b3l9ph62m50b
