Capturing the ambience of SWAT 4 (2005)

Running the game

First, install SWAT: Elite Force (SEF). The latest version at the time of writing is v7. This will enable proper widescreen resolution and FoV options.

Extracting sounds

Main ambient streams are located inside Content\Sounds\StreamingAudio.

We can use SWAT 4's editor, launchable via SEF, to listen to and export positional sounds. Look for UAX packages inside Content\Sounds, particularly SW_ambients.uax.

Identifying sounds

The community has documented how sounds work in SWAT 4's engine.

Look inside System/SoundEffects.ini for living documentation of the game's sound zones, for example how s00Warehouse in the training mission maps to the toHumS_DistantTraining asset. To discover the relevant IDs, we can use the Editor's Actor Search and Properties windows. Look for SoundMarker and AmbientSound instances.

Certain sounds, like the passing train on Food Wall, are keyed by animation frames. We can see the relevant events in the Editor's animation pane.

Capturing footage

By pressing the Tilde key, we can access the developer console. From here we can select a mission using switch <map file name> - regardless of whether we've unlocked it. showhands toggles the viewmodel display, while togglegui hides UI elements (even the pause menu!). ghost puts your chacter into no-clip mode, which is useful for positioning shots. To remove enemies, enter hideai.

Closing out my nights listening time by delving into the five album box of Chet Baker’s time at Riverside Records. There’s a ton of superb music here (all in 24/96 MQA), and so I decided to begin with album three, “Chet”, only because I love the album and am quite familiar with it, so I was curious what, if anything MQA brings to the sonic table. And while it’s not going to replace my LP or SACD, it’s damn close in many ways (and maybe a little better in some - go figure). The instrumental separation is outstanding - I can more easily hear each musician. I think I’m going to enjoy the other four albums after hearing this first sample. Finally! After years of moving further and further away from what made Grace (and The Nocturnals) such a huge local hit and garnered them a major label record deal, with “Daylight” and especially the song “Shout It Out” Grace has returned to the blues drenched rock sound that was her bread and butter. But “Daylight” is more than a one song reminder of what Grace Potter is all about. Songs like “Release” and “Love Is Love” show that after wandering in the pop wilderness Grace Potter is finding her way home to the sound that her early fans will rejoice in, and newer fans will revel in. Listening to this album on Tidal MQA (yes, praise the lord, they released it in MQA) at 24/96 is a truly enjoyable experience for this longtime Grace Potter fan. If you want to hear what the current Grace Potter sound has evolved into, and harken back to her pre fame day, give “Daylight” a spin (in whatever form moves you).
