In January, tcc posts started popping up on my feed. I was like, "You all are so weird..." and literally a couple of days later, my brain betrayed me and forced me to come back to this freaking community after 4 full years. AND I BLAME ADAM. Too interesting to stay away from. 🤬🤬🤬

Entered English in the late 13th century with the spelling sodein or sodaine, as a direct borrowing from Anglo-French sudein or sodein of the same meaning. The Anglo-French is from Old French sodain or subdain, which is from Latin subitanus or subitaneus, also meaning "immediate and unexpected".

The Latin is an adjective constructed from the past participle subitus of the verb subire, which literally means "to go under" (sub- meaning "under" from the Proto-Indo-European root *upo, "under", and ire meaning "to go" from the PIE root *ei, "to go"), and figuratively was used to mean "to go stealthily or quietly; to sneak; to come upon suddenly and without warning".

The modern spelling was not established until early in the 18th century. Prior to that, sodaine and suddain were the most common spellings.

The phrase all of a sudden is the only surviving usage of the noun form of this word (which had the meaning "an immediate, unexpected need or occurrence"). The noun form is therefore a fossil word, which is a word which only occurs as part of an idiom and is no longer used in any other context in the language.
