NASA completes spacecraft to transport, support Roman Space Telescope
The spacecraft bus that will deliver NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope to its orbit and enable it to function once there is now complete after years of construction, installation, and testing.
Now that the spacecraft is assembled, engineers will begin working to integrate the observatory’s other major components, including the science instruments and the telescope itself.
“They call it a spacecraft bus for a reason — it gets the telescope to where it needs to be in space,” said Jackie Townsend, the Roman deputy project manager at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. “But it’s really more like an RV because it has a whole assortment of functions that enable Roman to accomplish its scientific goals while out there too.”
Those goals include surveying wide swaths of the universe to study things like: dark energy, a mysterious cosmic pressure thought to accelerate the universe’s expansion; dark matter, invisible matter seen only via its gravitational influence; and exoplanets, worlds beyond our solar system.
The mission’s science wouldn’t be possible without a spacecraft to transport the telescope, point the observatory toward different cosmic targets, provide power, communicate with Earth, control and store instrument data, and regulate Roman’s temperature. Nearly 50 miles of electrical cabling are laced throughout the assembly to enable different parts of the observatory to communicate with each other.
The spacecraft will also deploy several major elements that will be stowed for launch, including the solar panels, deployable aperture cover, lower instrument Sun shade, and high-gain antenna. It’s also responsible for collecting and beaming down data, which is no small task for a space observatory that will survey the cosmos like Roman will.
“Roman will send back 1.4 terabytes of data per day, compared to about 50 to 60 gigabytes from the James Webb Space Telescope and three gigabytes from the Hubble Space Telescope,” said Jason Hylan, the Roman observatory manager at NASA Goddard. “Webb’s daily downlink is roughly comparable to 13 hours of YouTube video at the highest quality while Roman’s would amount to about 2 weeks.”
A Goddard Grand Slam
This milestone is the culmination of eight years of spacecraft design work, building, and testing by hundreds of people at Goddard.
“Goddard employees were the brains, designers, and executors. And they worked with vendors who supplied all the right parts,” Townsend said. “We leaned on generations of expertise in the spacecraft arena to work around cost and schedule challenges that arose from supply chain issues and the pandemic.”
One time- and money-saving technique the team came up with was building a spacecraft mockup, called the structural verification unit. That allowed them to do two things at once: complete strength testing on the mockup, designed specifically for that purpose, while also assembling the actual spacecraft.
The spacecraft’s clever layout also allowed the team to adapt to changing schedules. It’s designed to be modular, “more like Trivial Pursuit pie pieces than a nesting egg, where interior components are buried inside,” Townsend said. “That’s been a game-changer because you can’t always count on things arriving in the order you planned or working perfectly right away with no tweaks.” It also increased efficiency because people could work on different portions of the bus at the same time without interfering with each other.
The slightly asymmetrical and hexagonal spacecraft bus is about 13 feet (4 meters) wide by 6.5 feet (2 meters) tall and weighs in at 8,400 pounds (3,800 kilograms).
One reason it doesn’t weigh more is that some components have been partially hollowed out. If you could peel back some of the spacecraft’s panels, you’d find superthin metallic honeycomb sandwiched between two slim layers of metal. And many of the components, such as the antenna dish, are made of strong yet lightweight composite materials.
When the spacecraft bus was fully assembled, engineers conducted a comprehensive performance test. Prior to this, each component had been tested individually, but just like with a sports team, the whole unit has to perform well together.
“The spacecraft passed the test, and now we’re getting ready to install the payload –– Roman’s instruments and the telescope itself,” said Missie Vess, a spacecraft systems engineer for Roman at NASA Goddard. “Next year, we’ll test these systems together and begin integrating the final components of the observatory, including the deployable aperture cover, outer barrel assembly, and solar panels. Then we’ll finally have ourselves a complete observatory, on track for launch by May 2027.”

oooh weird conceptual art, neat! let's click through to the sou- oh, it's just a clothing brand website with superthin models wearing stuff that looks bad on purpose. marketing masquerading as avant-garde art was old in the '90s but clearly still works just as well if you don't look too closely at anything

But it's made of sterling silver, and most importantly, it's only 3" and even thinner. The wallet pen is quite a bit more expensive at $40 $70. Unfortunately, it was slightly too large for my old wallet at 4" long. But there's another way: I can carry a pen in my wallet! I found two wallet pens that could work. I'm not sure if I want to add a pen to that list. There's quite a bit of stuff on there already: a LED flashlight, a Leatherman Squirt, and of course my keys. On a related note, I've always wished I could carry a pen, but I've never found one small and convenient enough to add to my existing keychain. Those are the ones I see recommended most, but there are plenty of alternatives discussed in similar posts on 43folders and 37signals. Slimmy: The Slim Front Pocket Wallet Alternative The even smaller Junior All-Ett (with only two pockets instead of four) I liked my old dot matrix model so much I bought three new ones!īut there are other popular geek wallets, too, that I've either had directly recommended to me or seen people use: Since then, there's been an explosion of amazing Mighty Wallet styles. Update: I'm happy to report that I used my Mighty Wallet for years, and just decided to replace it in April 2013 (and again in June 2017) as it was finally getting a bit beat up. Plus: digits of π! On a dot matrix print-out! Come on, man! Or at least I was, until I discovered the Tyvek Mighty Wallets – which even come in a glorious fake dot matrix printout style! Be still, my beating geek heart! Since the sailcloth of the all-ett proved a bit problematic, I'm thinking the Tyvek might be a better choice, and placing my new wallet order. Minus those minor criticisms, I'm very happy with it. But given that I tend to open my wallet maybe 3-4 times per day, at most, that's a tradeoff I'm willing to make. It's a little more fiddly than a typical wallet when opening it and fishing items out of it. The orientation of the pockets means the contents tend to fall towards the middle when you open it. It's not a problem in practical use, you can't hear yourself sit down, but it is a little disconcerting at first. The ultra-thin spinnaker sailcloth they use is a tiny bit "crackly" in use. I don't know about you guys, but I tend to lose my wallet when I leave it lying around various places. I no longer feel motivated to remove my wallet from my back pocket when I sit down. Amazing! It's so much more comfortable to sit down with this in my back pocket. As promised, the fully populated All-ett was thinner – much thinner! – than my old wallet was empty. In search of an alternative, a coworker turned me on to the superthin All-Ett wallet.Īfter seeing the All-Ett, I was sold. I was in the market for a new wallet, but I wanted something… less. While I never had an enormous Constanza Wallet, I felt I could do better. My current Tumi wallet was almost 10 years old and starting to show its age. If we geeks obsessively optimize what's on our keychain, we'd be remiss if we didn't also obsessively optimize that other item most geeks carry around – our wallet.

In our tests, we verify that each of these features works with the case on. No interference with wireless signals or other functionality: A case shouldn’t reduce performance with any wireless signals-Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, cellular, NFC (near-field communication, which is necessary to use Apple Pay), or Qi wireless charging.Although a case’s lack of MagSafe support isn’t an absolute dealbreaker, we’re seeing enough great cases with MagSafe at similar prices to those without that we generally prefer them. A case without the magnetic ring may still support charging with a MagSafe charger, as long as it’s thin enough, but likely won’t work with a car mount or wallet. MagSafe: Apple’s MagSafe system is a bit complicated, as it encompasses magnetic wireless chargers and accessories, as well as cases with a magnetic ring built in to support them.Additionally, the iPhone 13–series devices have especially pronounced camera bumps, and the case material needs to rise taller than them to protect them. We use a 0.85-millimeter feeler gauge, per Apple’s guidelines, to test each case.
#The wild case ios cracked
Raised front lip and camera ring: As Apple’s case guidelines (PDF) explain, “Exposed glass on the device shall not come within 0.85 mm of a flat surface, such as a table or floor, in any orientation when the case is attached.” A lip around the edges of the phone’s display helps prevent cracked screens-one of the biggest worries with any smartphone-but it also helps to keep the screen from getting scratched if you place the phone screen-down.
On the other hand, we don’t consider cases with a circular opening to expose the Apple logo on the back of the phone because they offer less overall protection and provide no real benefit. We also like cases that don’t leave the top or bottom edge of the phone exposed, though such exposure isn’t necessarily a dealbreaker. The best cases provide button protection with tactility that mimics-or in some instances even enhances-the way the buttons feel on a bare iPhone.
#The wild case ios full
Full coverage: As a general rule, the more of the phone that a case protects, the better we prefer cases that protect everything but the phone’s screen.(Even a heavy-duty case can’t guarantee that your phone will survive every scenario intact-for example, a direct hit to the screen will still do damage.) The obvious exception here is superthin cases, which purposely compromise some drop protection in favor of a thinner profile. We don’t conduct drop tests, but we do look for cases that are obviously capable of withstanding some impact. Drop protection: We seek out cases that can adequately protect a phone without adding unnecessary embellishments or too much bulk.

Yoga shorts
Tumblr media
Many are made from cotton and spandex blends, with other options featuring moisture-wicking material that shoppers love. There are plenty of yoga shorts produced for the casual consumer, and also numerous pairs with the athletic customer in mind. Some are better suited for everyday lounging, and others are specifically designed for high-intensity workouts. Of course, there are many types of yoga shorts out there, and they all serve a different purpose. We want to provide breathability for our legs - whether we’re working out or not!Ī lot of Us have fairly extensive leggings collections, but if you’re not as well-versed in the wonderful world of yoga shorts, we’re here to help. As the spring is almost here, so is the official season of yoga shorts! Once it’s hot enough outside, full-length leggings simply aren’t the move. Temperatures are rising, which means one thing: Our leggings will be taking a brief break and chilling in our dressers. It isn’t so heavy, but I have assurance that you can’t see my butt in them” Ashley Rosenberg, a modelFIT instructor, calls the style “the forever classic” that’s “just unbeatable.” Katherine Gundling, a coach and programmer at ICE CrossFit NYC and Oculus CrossFit, agrees that they stand out among a sea of imitators: “They will last you years and stay in great condition.Us Weekly has affiliate partnerships so we may receive compensation for some links to products and services. At the same time, I’m like Goldilocks: I don’t like the superthin ones, but some are too thick. They’re also a favorite of Erin Brockovich, who was very particular about what she likes and does not: “If I’m doing yoga, and I’m down on my knees and lifting my butt up, I don’t want to wear leggings that you can see through. She praises the high-waisted fit in particular: “I live for high-rise and for not having to keep pulling up my pants while practicing or teaching.” That includes Katch Posch, who teaches at Sky Ting. Lululemon’s workout gear has been recommended to us by many, many fitness experts, and the Wunder Train tights are their longtime best-selling pair - and a favorite among yoga instructors. Price: There are three different price points that we decided on, denoted as $, $$, or $$, respectively: under $25, under $50, and under $100. We’ve noted the available sizes for each pair below. Size: Our focus was on finding yoga pants offered in the widest range of sizes possible. The pair of yoga pants that had the most expert recommendations was named the best overall - but you can find yoga pants for every type of practice below.īest overall | Best less expensive | Best plus-size | Best less expensive plus-size | Best high-waisted | Best less expensive high-waisted | Best capris | Best bootleg | Best sweatpants | Best less expensive sweatpants We also consulted our data to determine which yoga pants our readers have purchased the most over the past three years and pulled out the ones that our readers had bought at least 2,000 times over the past three years. As a result, you’ll see that both “yoga pants” and “ leggings” are often used interchangeably, even in the names of many of the products below.īut most of these yoga pants have been recommended by fitness instructors, yogis, and other experts in previous Strategist stories. And though the term “yoga pant” might make you think of high-waisted stretchy pants with flared bottoms, here, we’ve defined it to be pants made of a thick enough material to cover your butt, even when you’re in downward-facing dog, and stretchy and sweat-wicking enough to let you go through your flow comfortably - regardless of silhouette. But wading through all the styles and brands to find a pair that fits well, stays put when you move, and actually looks nice is no easy task. Whether you’re working out or just working from home, yoga pants are probably somewhere in your day-to-day wardrobe rotation. Photo-Illustration: The Strategist Photos: Retailers
