I raised some giant swallowtails this summer! The caterpillars were being evicted from a small plant they were killing, but they were so close to pupating that I decided to keep em safe until they did. I fed them clippings from my orange tree, and ended up releasing four butterflies a couple weeks later! They stuck around my yard for the duration of their lives, it was so cool having them around :)

They are beautiful! Hope they went on to live happy butterfly lives and make one million babies...

Red Admiral has an origin story as ridiculous and unnecessary as any supervillain worth their salt. once an accomplished entomologist studying carnivorous lepidoptera, a bite from a mutated specimen gave her the ability to dissolve into a swarm of vampire butterflies the same way a typical vampire transforms into a swarm of bats. with her new power, she's turned to a life of crime simply for the novelty of it, and believes her claim to the butterfly-based villain niche is more legitimate than the Monarch's. Swallowtail doesn't have powers, but makes up for it with her sick butterfly knife skills. she was a bit disappointed to discover that serving as a supervillain's right-hand woman is basically a glorified internship, but hey, it's still kinda cool. by day, Aditi Tallavarjula works at a hole-in-the-wall comic book shop frequented by one Gary Fischer. eventually he works up the nerve to ask her out, but hilarity ensues as both parties try to hide their henchman double-life from the other. Swallowtail (lat. Papilio machaon), the day butterfly is quite large because the wingspan can reach ten centimeters.

According to various sources, the intensity of wing coloration depends on climatic conditions. The subspecies of swallowtail living in the northern regions have a sandy, almost white primary color. In insects in the south, the palette changes to a bright yellow shade. I think the butterflies I've met have a light, dim shade enough for a better disguise among the grass burned out under the burning sun.🌼

Махаон (лат. Papilio machaon), дневная бабочка довольно крупных размеров, ведь размах крыльев может достигать десяти сантиметров.

В разных источниках пишут, что интенсивность окраски крыльев зависит от климатических условий. У подвидов махаона, обитающих в северных регионах, основной цвет – песочный, почти белый. У насекомых на юге палитра меняется до ярко-желтого оттенка. Думаю, у встреченных мной бабочек достаточно светлый, неяркий оттенок для лучшей маскировки среди выгоревшей под жгучим солнцем травы.🌼
