[TAPP AU Masterpost]
Part one of an ongoing conversation.
So it's been a while since I've drawn The Boys, so let's fix that with a warm-up earlier on the TAPP!timeline, before Kokichi really gets over himself enough to admit he needs help.
He and Saihara are also dancing around their last major interaction before everything flipped turnways, too. After... everything, so to speak, Shuichi isn't even sure how to approach Kokichi overall, let alone while the kid's hiding in an alcove. Kokichi isn't sure how he feels about Shuichi anymore, exactly; he wants to pick a side, to either hate him or get the resolve to reach out (in his way) and be friends again, but at this stage? He just... can't.
It's the little things, that draw them back together. Little tests of the waters between them.

What are your thoughts about the seemingly recent trend of fandoms trying to claim ownership of a franchise they're into? Like the feeling that fans would be better at managing a specific franchise rather than the people who work on these things for a living. (Examples of this include the backlash and petitions against Star Wars and Game of Thrones, along with the "Sega should hire you, this is so much better than Forces!" comments you see regarding Sonic fan-projects)
It’s not a recent trend at all. Nerds today are the same as nerds back in 1993. What’s changed is the fact that the internet makes it easier to find these people than ever before. And I have to wonder… what is ownership? Who says who’s ideas are the right ideas?
A point I’ve hammered in over and over and over is how the whole comics industry operates. The guys who created Superman aren’t alive anymore. But Superman the character is still around. If you’re smart, and you’re in control of the Superman brand, you hire people who are fans of the character to keep writing new Superman content. That was true in 1985, in 1995, in 2005, and in 2015.
The only thing separating modern Superman comics from fanfiction is the stamp of approval from a bunch of people in business suits who inherited ownership when the real creators of Superman died. Because they say “this is official,” that makes it official. But you could write a totally normal, on-brand Superman fanfiction and there would be no difference between official and unofficial besides that stamp of approval. It would be the same story regardless.
(Yes, I know, it also means the difference between getting paid and being “part of the cannon” but that last point doesn’t matter as much as anyone thinks it does)
And the people who are writing Superman fanfiction today could be the same people writing official Superman comics tomorrow.
Back in 1995, you might have a friend or a bystander see your fanart and say, “You’re really good, you should work for Marvel Comics.” That would be one person, maybe two. Ever. In your whole life.
How do you do that in 1995? The internet is still in the infancy of mainstream adoption, and there aren’t really any websites or people you can ask about this topic. Do you just, like, send artwork in to their mailbag address? If you don’t know what you’re doing, you’ll probably get rejected. I sent design documents in to Sega in 1995, and I got rejected.
Maybe you go to a convention. You bring some sample artwork with you, you corner a guy from Marvel and show him your work. How often were comic conventions back then? Once a year? How far would you have to travel? Multiple cities? Multiple states? For a potential rejection? Back in 1995, this was a big, difficult headache.
But this is how much the internet has transformed our lives. Any artist can reach an audience of hundreds, thousands, millions of people. Anyone can just start a comic about anything they want to make, bypass the whole system, and turn that in to a solo career easier than ever before. If you’re determined instead to work with someone else’s IP, like you really love Spider-man and want to make Spider-man stories specifically, there are endless resources on how to build a portfolio.
That one or two people that urge you to strive for bigger and better things now probably do so through social media, an international forum where their one post could snowball in to a much greater campaign. That “one shot a year” window is now easier than making a phone call.
I use comics as an example here because that’s an established industry where this kind of thing is normalized. So you have Christopher Hastings, he starts Dr. McNinja in 2004, and by 2011 he’s just writing for Marvel Comics. First for Deadpool, then Longshot Saves the Universe, and eventually he created Gwenpool.
A lot of this can be applicable to any fandom. If you’re good enough and the property is around long enough there is a non-zero chance you might get to work with it in an official capacity.
But you have to be realistic, because it’s not actually going to be that easy. It’s never, ever going to be easy. And everyone forgets that. Everyone gets star struck by the glitz and glamor and never stops to think about the cold, hard, business machine that chews people up every single day. If you can do it, anyone can do it, which means a much larger pool of competition and sometimes the job goes to the guy who was 0.2% luckier than you. It still ultimately comes down to who you know and being in the right place at the right time.
The issue here is that the peanut gallery will never understand that. When that one guy encourages you to “do it for real,” he has no concept of what the professional side of that industry even looks like. He’s just paying you a compliment. Unfortunately the pessimism actually required for something like that isn’t fun or uplifting or complimentary. So that part never gets said, and it never gets thought about, which is part of the reason why it can get so out of control when it gains popularity with a larger crowd. Think of it like the opposite of a pity party.
Point is, these are old sentiments that have been around forever, it’s just the internet empowers people more than ever before, amplifying these ideas significantly. But there always were, and always will be people that are ignorant to the reality of this situation. My advice would be to not pay attention to them. Reality will find them eventually.

Architectural Styles 2
Leo: Mission Revival. So, my mom wants to run from a senatorial seat this incoming election, and I think it'd be really hopeful if you campaigned for her Napoleon Dynamite style. I know that's a lot of info to lay on you at once, so I'm gonna give you some resources to aid you with the campaign as well: dates, notes, mottos, early poster designs, bare speeches, and decorative pencil toppers. Oh, and I also must tell you that you're one of her contenders for a running mate, and you have a three-month period to set all this up before. All this is awaiting you only if you agree to any of it. But, I'd really favor you a lot more because I handmade this fancy suit just for you and I made sure to put Scooby-Doo patterns on your tie. No, they didn't have Velma — your favorite — because Scooby's the icon, and they're not gonna waste money printing designs of the other characters. Also, I'd like to mention that, on a $50 basis, I'll come to your house and suck your cock for this if you don't do it. I expect a response from you by tomorrow. […] I like you but only because you come off strong, and I like people who come off strong. You're the exact opposite of the guy who cut me off in that jeep with obnoxious stickers, and that example is exactly the model we need for… the running mate of a senatorial politician: that's what we need at this moment. […] Listen, I can flatter you all day with my compliments, but the choice (at the end of the day) is ultimately yours… but it'd really make my mom happy if you agreed, so please do it? Ok, that's it <Oro pulls out a gun.> You listen here, you piece of human garbage. You will be my mom's running mate when she runs for a senatorial seat, and you will do it in a humorous style à la Napoleon Dynamite. Did you fucking hear me? You will help her run, and you will get a Scooby-Doo tie! FUCK YOU!
Taurus: Akbari. A trucker hat, left abandoned on the highway; how sad. It was probably a long-gone reminder of a time of joyous festival by the roadside, but it's best not to linger about those thoughts for too long; you could end up feeling remorseful over what happened. [,,,] Anyways, let's get back to getting in the nitty-gritty of this abandoned truck stop. First things first: break through the entrance; get the crowbar then. Argh, you see the, unf, glass here is very strong here because what the truck drivers used to do is, well, to put it harshly: they rammed themselves into the place usually on accident. It would leave the place with a ton of damage and a lighting condition that eerily warns of domestic verbal abuse <the glass is lifted out of the window frame, offering an entrance into the truck stop.> […] I love these places because they're like convenience stores on meth, and this location in particular was part restaurant, part hotel, and part gas station: a three-way tie between unsanitary conditions! […] Purpose? Why, there was no purpose here except the pure curiosity of it all. There were no Hopper-esque scenery that we could take in, nor beer we could stash, nor are there any gas pumps to feed myself with. «Wait, what?» We're here purely for the adventure: this baby's gonna be demolished by the next month, and we gotta make a lasting impression of what once was while we still have the chance. […] Woah, is this the ice machine I saw on that internet video? It is: it's a Hoshizaki ice machine! «Uh, Koil? There's still trucks outside.» Wow, a 2014 calendar for Paris glitz, and it has kittens too! Aw man, you can still smell the grease left on these fryers. Oh, and there's a bag of Jelly Bellies here too? «Koil, they're coming inside; they have flashlights and batons!» Ooh, a headset! I bet this is wired up to somewhere that's still operating: "Ah yes, please come in, Olligestaia, we're having an emergency here: I just shat myself." «Koil, they're right outside the door, I can clearly hear the barking dogs and intense yelling to get out of the establishment!» Yo, they got a TV!
Aquarius: Art deco. A cop thought that we were smoking weed when we were actually smoking plain-old cigarettes. You see, that's how you mess with their heads: you make it look like you're doing something illegal, but you're actually doing something in the same vein as what they presumed you to be doing only legal. I could picture the look on his face, he looked at us with a disappointment in his eyes that he couldn't bust some younglings for three ounces of weed (thanks for the stash by the way, Ali), but at least I didn't give him candy cigarettes instead. You know, the ones that always felt and tasted like chalk and came in those superhero-themed boxes? Yeah, I ended up circulating those enough as a young age to build up a drug empire somewhere in India: it's crazy how that turned out, but I don't associate with that much anymore (I just let it do its business and I have a coconut in the receptionist's desk with a recorder to answer any complaints). [,,,] <Roaches scurries to taste the crumbs of the candy cigarette left on the ground. Comically, its tiny coughs can be heard from attempting to eat the repackaged chalk.> […] Heh, that was a fun run-in with the law… wait, I'm above twenty-one and I've been so for years now. Why the fuck was he investigating us for illegally smoking when I'm clearly not a minor? Was I with other people who happened to be minors? Was that what set him off? Wha-, those candy cigarettes are getting to me, man. I think I may've imagined that entire encounter: those kids weren't there with me, that cop wasn't there to approach me, and you weren't here to talk to afterwards… where's that goddamn chalk? I need it: it's the only thing that holds the cure to my newly acquired madness. […] <The roach has now started its own miniature drug business from the stash of crumbs it managed to take upon its initial encounter. It's build a monopoly based on the supply.> Come on, where is it? Don't do this to me, Ali.
Pisces: Maghreb. I specifically remember there being an entire roleplay here involving some sort of anime-esque sky fortress that revolved around three main characters interacting with each other. What compromised the structure of it was a single person who had a godlike presence within the world: he watched over a giant, green field of earthen hills that was populated by titanic golems. What he led on was that he was secretly the master of these beings, but he was also a creator that struggled with restraining his own madness. They were our star of the show and an explicit name was never given, only "Dr. G." — I swear, he stole that from somewhere. [,,,] Accompanying Dr. G was a distant traveler from an astronautical world: his name was unknown, but he went by MC and said that his backstory consisted of being chased down by intergalactic bounty-hunters before landing on the planet of Dr. G. On that planet, he had a newfound purpose to write and create filthy beats. [,,,] Then there was… Austino. He was the one whom Dr. G despised with all his might but had to keep around for necessity. Austino was the one who'd make it his job to annoy all other characters and break the fourth wall as often as possible. He was the one whom, in past roleplaying sessions, Dr. G often tried to murder but kept reanimating to spite him… Oh, and there's Pandora, I guess. […] I might be misremembering this, but I'm pretty sure there were various homoerotic elements within it at various intervals, as there was a scene where Austino stops to showcase everyone else this cool thing he found online, and it was the Moby Huge (a three-foot dildo). […] It was weird as hell, and all I remember from the climax was that some green dude appeared at the end and foreshadowed what I'm doing now after an epic battle between a demon — created by Dr. G — that imitated the powers of MC. I think it was for the purpose of a hero's trial, or something? […] Dr. G later tried creating a cyberpunk roleplay, but it never went anywhere.

MCU
Armed and dangerous series
(Now with podfic for the first story by me)
Universe: MCU
Pairing: Bucky/Tony later Bucky/Tony/Steve
summary: Bucky wakes up. Tony takes a liking to him. Steve frowns a lot. Also, there is some Avenging going on. And tech porn.
my notes: The first story is short and sweet and the second one is long and plotty, overall a very good read.
Be No Stranger (All Your Saints and Soldiers Remix)
(Podficbu Fire_Juggler and Paraka)
Universe:MCU
Pairing:Steve/Tony
Summary: That's the twenty-first century love song, baby. Glitz and glamour and every one of us is a liar.
Bedtime stories
Universe: MCU
Pairing:Steve/Tony
Summary: a series of Not!Fics focusing on steve and Tony's adopted son
My notes: short and sweet, some are hilarious and others a little bit heart breaking.
Bruce and Tony Accidentally Kill Tom Riddle, for SCIENCE! ... Er, Magic
(with podfic by adistantsun)
Universe: MCU HP fusion
Pairing: bruce/tony
Summary: Slytherin Tony and Ravenclaw Bruce are assigned to be Potions lab partners in 7th year. They just want to win Slughorn's prize, but things get very strange, very quickly. And Tom Riddle sucks.
My notes: a super adorable and fun fic.
Dreaming electric
Pairing: pepper/tony, tony/steve
Universe: MCU with inspiration from 616
Summary: New York City is still rebuilding in the wake of the Chitauri army when the biotech virus Extremis is released, upgrading a lone domestic terrorist into a posthuman threat. Tony would’ve been happy to keep going on playing with alien tech in his lab, saving average citizens as Iron Man, and pretending not to notice these other people moving into his tower, but sometimes a person just can’t have nice things.
My notes: a really good update of the extremis arc for movi everse. Also Bruce and Tony talk bout D&D and that is awesome
Drinking games
Universe:MCU
Pairing: Peter/Tony,  Tony/Steve UST
Summary:  "Okay, house rules,” Clint said, leaning back against the backrest of the booth they were seated at. “It can't be a random celebrity, or something. It has to be someone you actually know. Someone you'd go to if you suddenly found yourself gay and then had to have sex right away."
Steve thinks drinking with the team will be a good bonding session for their newest Avenger, but, as usually happens with his people and alcohol, things go kinda sideways.
My notes: super hilarious, kept me smiling the whole time
First impressions ( are a work in progress)
Universe: MCU
pairing:steve/tony
Summary: Howard had wanted Tony to be more like Steve, which only adds to the tension between Tony and Steve as the team comes together. Tony enjoys pushing Steve's buttons in order to make him seem less perfect. Eventually, though, they start working things out. There's a nice slow build to the relationship, and both Tony and Steve are well-characterized. This was published just pre-movie, so some things aren't totally in line, but it's excellent
My notes: a good story that takes our boys from atagonistic to friends and more!
Free floating in space
Universe: MCU AU
Pairing:Steve/Tony
Summary: Tony runs a small salvaging business in the backwater territory of Outer Centaurus. When scavenging a long abandoned space station leads to an unexpected find, it begins a long journey for Tony, Steve, and the rest of the Iron Bird crew as they stand on the edge of war.
Ironsides
(with podfic by exmanhater)
Universe: MCU
Pairing: Steve/Tony
Summary: Antonia Carter Stark takes no shit and no prisoners.
My notes: Girl!Tony is one of my favorite things in the whole world and this story just really nails it!
Just a broken lullaby
Universe: MCU
Pairing: Gen or pre-slash
Summary:  When a mission goes wrong, the Avengers find themselves the unlikely guardians of a six-year-old Tony Stark.
My notes: a really good team fic. I especially love the way Natasha is portrayed
The Last Love Song of Anthony E. Stark
Universe:MCU
Pairing:Steve/Tony
Summary: After contracting an Asgardian virus, Tony starts forgetting things. And people. And Steve.
My notes: lets just say this one is so good it made me like established relationship fic. It also really flushes out the world of asguard, plus distressed/ sick tony is the best!
many names in history, none of them are ours
Universe:MCU
Pairing:steve/tony
Summary: Steve's not sure if he'll ever understand Tony Stark, but it's good, living here. If he still wakes up sometimes convinced this was all a dream, well, it's better than it was before, and that's something, isn't it?
The Avengers live in a world that both glorifies and fears them, but they know each other now behind the scenes.
The modern world is awesome and so are you
Univers:MCU
Pairing:gen with hints of tony/steve
Summary:When Steve wakes up, SHIELD wants him to spend some time talking to therapists and visit some doctors and acclimate him slowly back into the world in the healthiest manner possible. They're waiting to introduce him to the modern world until they're certain he's stable.
Tony thinks it's taking too long and is boring and he just really wants to show Steve all the cool shit he's missed out on.
My notes:  Short awesome fluff
One foot in and one foot back Universe:MCU Pairing: Steve/tony Summary:This isn't the worst thing that's ever happened to Tony, but it's in the top five. or the one where tony and steve imprint on each other, and nothing is ever easy for tony My notes: an awesome take on the soulbonding thing. Steve sees it as something magical and tony sees it as a defect. Lots of angsty along with some fluff!
Paparazo
(now with podfic by opalsong!)
Universe:MCU
Pairing:Peter (old spiderman movies)/Tony
Summary:So, Iron Man apparently needed better surge protection in his suit. He was falling, straight out of the sky into the middle of Manhattan, and Peter could only hope--only hope--only shoot his web and yeah, his aim was true, and yeah, Iron Man bounced as lightly as a golf club on a windscreen, but the webbing held. Peter fired again, snaring Iron Man and easing him to the ground as strand after strand of web broke in a beautiful display of applied physics.
They landed in an alley between two buildings. "Are you okay?"
My notes: adorable and lots of fun
Put My Guns in the Ground (I Can't Shoot Them Anymore)
series
Universe: MCU
Pairing: steve/tony
Summary: There's no magic answer, no single moment of catharsis that will make it all go away, so all you can do is keep walking and make it work.
My notes: a two part series one story from Tony's POV and one from Steve's. tony's Story deals with his PTSD from afghanistan and Steve's deals with his adjustment to the modern world. The story is pitch perfect and I love it. Even though it is dealing with PTSD it doesn't get too dark, it stays light in tone and has a sweet happy ending.
tales of the bots series
(now with podfic by reenajenkins!)
Universe:MCU
Pairing:Tony/Steve
Summary: When Tony Stark was seventeen years old, he built his first AI. On that day, he ceased to be his father's creation, and became a creating force in his own right.
That one act likely saved his life, and not always in the most obvious ways.
My notes: super adorable and fluffy but with angst and ahsjslsjsj! You will have lots of feels.
Raw footage
(With podfic by kalakyria)
Universe: MCU
Pairing: Gen
Summary: “Clint Barton has sent me a photograph of his glory,” Thor said, and handed Natasha his phone. Quirking an eyebrow, she glanced at it. “This is a courting custom?”
My notes: Glorious crack!
Red, red, gold
with podfic by ironyman
Universe: MCU
Pairing: Steve/Tony
Summary: Her name is Tasha Stark, and you won't break her.
The road to hell
Universe:MCU
Pairing: Steve/tony
Summary: in which no one has super powers and Steve is Tony's PA after Pepper gets promoted
My notes: super ridiculous and adorable.
Running to keep in the same place
(with Podfic by recordscratch)
universe: MCU
Pairing:gen
Summary: Tony's the only one of them who has to wrangle two jobs and he's rapidly running of time for, like, everything.
My notes: a short sweet Hurt Comfort story where Tony is overworking himself and steve and bruce step in to help.
The Spaces (Silences) Between
Universe: MCU
Pairing: Steve/Tony
Summary: A sudden accident leaves Tony unable to speak.
My notes: a wonderful piece, you can really feel tony's frustration and Steve's heartache.
Tech support
Universe:MCU
Pairing:Gen
Summary: (Kind of AU in which Stark Industries doesn't exist (anymore) and S.H.I.E.L.D. is akin to MI6); Pre-slash Tony Stark's day job is resident genius. Since he has an entire computer system into himself as a remote operating system, his other day job is running S.H.I.E.L.D.'s R&D with Dr. Banner (BROS 4EVA), trying to make Director Fury cry (close, but no cigar) and flirting with All the Agents, All the Time. Agent Iceberg (AKA Super-perfect Super-soldier Double-Oh-Awesome Agent Rogers) is immune to many things, apparently, and Tony is one of them.
My notes: the beginning of a really awesome AU, just a snippet into the life, I really wish there was more.
This Wasn't What the Brochure Promised
Universe: MCU
Pairing: Steve/Tony
Summary: "Do you think this is still a training exercise, or did we just get our asses handed to us by actual bad guys?" asked Clint.
Tony, Steve, Clint and Bruce spend quality time together in a cave. Tony does not build another arc reactor (even if he sort of needs one). Steve is all Protective Leader. Clint is terrifyingly good with a knife. Bruce bleeds and snarks. There is banter and embarassing amounts of schmoop and the boys get very touchy-feely.
Turn Around (Three Times Before Lying Down)
Pairing: tony/steve
Universe: MCU AU
Summary:  Everyone knows that Tony Stark is a playboy, billionaire philanthropist, but what they don’t know is that he’s also a werewolf. When a government agency known as SHIELD finds out, they use this information to force Tony’s hand and bring him into a new elite lycan field team, codename The Avengers Initiative.
Suddenly Tony finds himself playing host to a bunch of lycans, a misplaced God of Thunder and an experimental supersoldier that isn’t as dead as everyone assumed. Can his week get any worse?
My notes: the relationship feels a little rushed, but the story has a plot beyond werewolf fic and has a lot of found family feels.
Two is the one for mel
Universe: MCU
Pairing: Tasha/Tony/Steve
Summary: What my darling brother means is that he’d like a threesome. Or the one where tony has a twin sister and they both like steve.
My notes: hot and sweet. A fun short series. I really like the dynamic between the three of them
Weighing of the heart
Universe:MCU
Pairing:tony/steve
Summary: Steve Rogers hasn't really had a particularly easy life. He's struggled along, he's proud of himself, he's self-sufficient and capable and he works damn hard. He has friends and a purpose and he's only a few semesters from graduating college. He's managed, but his life has been far from easy. That's mostly because of a slight filing error. The last thing that Steve needed was someone to watch over him. The only thing that his Guardian Angel needs is a second chance to make a first impression.
My notes: super adorable, and hilarious in turns. Sometimes slightly heartbreaking. A wonderful ride that left me smiling all day.

The Sound Of Drums
Latest Review: Series Three - Episode 12 - "The Sound Of Drums". STARRING: David Tennant , Freema Agyeman , John Barrowman,  WITH John Simm and Alexandra Moen  ALSO FEATURING: Adjoa Andoh, Trevor Laird, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Reggie Yates, Elize du Toit, Nichola McAuliffe, Nicholas Gecks,  Colin Stinton, Olivia Hill, Daniel Ming, Lachele Carl, Sharon Osbourne.  ALSO WITH VOICE WORK BY: Zoe Thorne, Gerard Logan, and Johnnie Lyne-Pirkis  WITH CAMEOS by McFly, and Ann Widdecombe.  --- Written By - Russell T Davies, Script Editor - Simon Winstone Directed By - Colin Teague Music - Murray Gold Produced By - Phil Collinson Executive Producers - Russell T. Davies + Julie Gardner Originally Transmitted 23rd June 2007, BBC 1 This middle component of the storyline that saw out the 2007 run of modern Doctor Who is a dynamic, compelling slice of action and political satire. As good as it had been to have the likes of Autons and Macra come back from days long gone, and especially welcome to see the Who staple monsters that are the Daleks and the Cybermen return with a vengeance, the show badly needed the most masterly of humanoid villains to keep the Doctor on his toes. --- John Simm's Master can be best likened to 'The Joker from Batman. He is utterly unhinged, and without remorse for the crimes he commits.  He actively enjoys causing chaos and misery. But such is this prolific performer's calibre of acting, the viewer cannot help but like him on some level. This is a quality inherent in all the more effective Masters – with other notable names being those of Delgado, Ainley, Jacobi (albeit mainly resting on the fake Yana persona), and Gomez. Of course I will acknowledge the pure villainous qualities of the 'decayed' Master that showed up in the Tom Baker era, and in places also in the 1996 TV Movie. To my mind though, the ideal variant has some level of dark charm, and humorous edginess. A great idea that makes this episode work, is putting the TARDIS crew firmly on the back foot. They do not even have their magic ship as a 'home base', and arrive late on the scene as the Master Plan has already unfolded to near finality. 'Harold Saxon' has become the British Prime Minister, and virtually the whole population are enthralled by his charisma and decidedly alternate style to politics. The manner in which he sweeps aside all dissenting voices in his Cabinet through the method of poisonous gas, and tapping his hand on the table to the 'Sound of Drums' is a fine scene. He even gives some warning to his victims, but in such a way that he is comically obtuse, thus catching some of the supposed smartest people in the land completely off-guard. It is hard to tell which is the more disturbing death in these 10 Downing Street sections: the prolonged suffocation of senior politicians by gas, or the way the Toclafane slice-and-dice Vivien Rook - a reporter rather too bold and determined for her own good.                                    "I'm taking control, Uncle Sam, starting with you. Kill him!" By contrast, the execution of the American President is played very much as black comedy. We have a boisterous and self-important world leader, and one perhaps looking down on Britain; no doubt due to the "ass" elected by the population. In this day and age, with such a controversial new president in charge this scene plays out on a different level. Even the very current affairs savvy Davies could not have anticipated this dimension his work would take. Having a wife by the Master's side is a neat spin on an antagonist that was normally a lone wolf. Whilst he may have temporary stooges to help him (and usually hypnotised ones at that), this is the first time it appears he has a stone cold lover to endorse his villainy. In the Colin Baker portion of the Classic Series, there were tentative alliances with The Rani and Glitz respectively. However, in Lucy the Master has someone who seems to love his unending ambition, ruthlessness and even his sadism. (But of course there are limits to what evil a spouse can put up with, and this is explored effectively in the concluding episode).                                                                                                                                 The telephone conversation scene gives both Simm and Tennant a chance to share screentime equally. When they finally meet in the same frame the effect is even more marked. When they finally meet in the same frame the effect is even more marked. However, whilst the Tenth Doctor swansong The End Of Time is inferior to this Series Three closer, it is ahead in terms of offering decent one-on-one material for two of Britain's most respected screen actors. The 'Toclafane' - a name from young Gallifreyan fairy tales essentially act as the Master’s force of marauding assassins. But they are a pretty neat invention, in that they combine a distinct monster look with some semblance of a disturbingly imbalanced personality. Having multiple voices to breathe life into them is also a great production choice. The story behind who these creatures are is kept mysterious for now in this particular outing. If one were to be overly critical, they could be accused of looking somewhat like the confectionary Maltesers - especially when the pulsating Voodoo Child track plays out for a distinctly long stretch. Using a piece of popular chart music was a bold move by Davies and can perhaps be seen as risking dating the production. But taken as a suitably offbeat piece of rhythmical noise, that the Master would choose to celebrate his crowning moment with, it is more than appropriate. Also, this is one of the few moments in the show at the time when composer Murray Gold is not providing persistently stirring backing music to the onscreen drama.  Series Three did a serviceable job of giving the viewer a clan of relatives to make Martha’s attachment to Earth mean something, and managed to be both similar enough but also distinctly different from the dynamic that Rose Tyler had in terms of her original 'home'. Furthermore, some good groundwork was done in terms of exploring just why Martha eventually chose not to remain by the Doctor's side full time. Adjoa Andoh is probably the best performer out of this family group, and combines steely determination with a subtle sense of really caring for all those closest to her. She would justifiably return in Series Four's closing pair of episodes, as well. Trevor Laird is notably stronger in his acting, than the very tired and ineffectual henchman role that was part of 1986's Mindwarp. He makes for a devoted father figure, and shows some real bravery in helping the Doctor's party evade capture. Reggie Yates is the kind of casting choice that peppered the 1980s under John Nathan-Turner's watch, and is engaging enough. It is a rather generic brother role as Leo, however, and there is virtually no character development that the show normally pulled off so well by now. Also, for whatever reason, Yates barely features in this episode, and contributes even less in the following one. Martha's other sibling Tish, played by Gugu Mbatha-Raw is perhaps the best used recurring character in terms of the Saxon Arc itself, and is performed with conviction throughout. Much like Freema Agyeman, Mbatha-Raw has had a very fine career post-Doctor Who. Martha herself remains a solid companion, with Ageyman really selling the reveal that the Master is the most powerful man in the country. The response to the startling impact of her 'normal' world being so drastically changed is a strong core theme of this multiparter, and plays out with full effect in the ensuing Last Of The Time Lords. As this episode comes to its cliff-hanger ending, the viewer is utterly captivated as to how Dr Jones will cope without her near-immortal mentor. Like Rose she is capable and independent, but has usually needed some superior experience and incredible intellect from the Doctor to overcome the problem at hand. This particular challenge is mountainous to put it mildly. Captain Jack perhaps is just more along for the ride after some very good material in the preceding episode where he sought some kind of acknowledgement from the Doctor. Of course, he does helps with the escape back to present day Earth - conveyed in a frenetic flash back - and he also gets to do a (very deliberate) plug for his own spin off Torchwood. Otherwise he is arguably surplus to immediate story requirements, and also suffers yet another helpless 'death' - this time at the hands of the Master, and his upgraded sonic screwdriver. This disconcerting cycle of painful demise and lurching back to life in traumatic fashion has been echoed in more recent times in the Forever TV series. Whilst short-lived at just one season, that particular show had a lead character - Henry Morgan - that has some minor similarities with the Jack Harkness character. Pacing in this story is mostly good, and the episode packs a lot into its duration (which is slightly longer than the average of most episodes that year). The climax plays out for a good ten minutes, and thus is both truly riveting and furthers the long-running story concerning Harold Saxon, that first was glimpsed back in Love And Monsters. Most of the earlier sections are breathless chasing or exposition, with some detail on the Master's raison d'etre, and what he means to the Doctor. The whole thing could so easily be rushed, but in the hands of the dependable Colin Teague, it all comes together sufficiently well. One recurring plot point which was a little less welcome was the call-back to The Lazarus Experiment, which many still regard as the weakest story of the run of thirteen episodes. Having the Doctor rendered helpless was a good idea on paper, but the choice here is to make him look like an especially ancient-looking man. Whilst showcasing good make up it never really adds much to the overall story, and would lead to the regrettable 'Harry Potter' CGI imp the following week. Perhaps something different, which rendered our main man immobile and slow of wits, would have worked better.  Although much of the episode is focused on action, satire or re-establishing the Doctor-Master rivalry, the most moving and powerful portion concerns some exposition and visual display of Gallifrey and its orange skies. This is portrayed so much better on a respectable TV budget, compared to the closest precedent in the six-part 1970s serial The Invasion of Time. The narrated flashback makes use again of the poignant music Gold previously used in Utopia, and this backing track seems even more appropriate, as the key to the scene is making the viewer care for the Master through showing him in the form of a mere innocent child. Some mysterious and anonymous Time Lords also feature, with the scene notably breaking the ethnic onscreen barrier which for so long had been a minus point concerning the Doctors home world TV stories. --- SUMMARY : Whilst a little lacking in fully combining both fun adventure and true depth in terms of themes and moral lessons, this is still a good episode in a generally strong second full season for the Tenth Doctor. In comparison to the prior Utopia, it is a small step down in most respects, but many other stories would also struggle to compare favourably. Taken on its own merits, it is still a great watch, and has stood the test of time well. Back in mid-2007, the season finale was set up with a very dark and intriguing premise, and most regular viewers at the time were left desperate to see how it played out. http://reviews.doctorwhonews.net/2017/03/the_sound_of_drums.html?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=tumblr

(Click for higher quality!) [AU Masterpost]
Pretty much in continuity with previous comics.
The lore thickens! This is indeed a post-VR AU, the details of which I'm still working out. Much like in canon, it's unclear where the kids of "Class 79" end and the fabrication begins, albeit for separate reasons.
As far as we're concerned here, Kiyo is just... Some Guy. Like, just a dude with a sweatervest under his blazer and vague passionate professor energy. And issues, but not dangerous issues (at least to anyone else, not that most of their class is ready to look past the game. which is fully within their rights to do for the record).
Kokichi, after talking more with some upperclassmen and slowly being re-introduced to his once-friends... understands, feeling fundamentally isolated, and knowing you earned your way there. But we certainly can't allow emotional honesty, now can we?
Rantaro is a good older brother (and having issues of his own, especially with his short-term memory. It could have been far worse, granted, but... those aftershocks still strike true precisely where you'd want them least, don't they?) Kaito is still kind of a macho jackass, but he's getting the spirit.
Feel more than free to send asks about this AU if you like, I'm on a roll and trying not to lose steam

So some of Kokichi's beta designs have heterochromia and I know I'm not the first to raise the possibility he wears a color contact to hide it, but has anyone done this joke yet

Answers to questions nobody had.
Prequel to this, some indeterminate time after this.
I don't consider it an inherently romantic gesture, for the record, but Kaito gave Kokichi the jacket in this AU after v3 (assuming it was like a VR simulation "class 79" went through before starting at Hope's Peak, Or Something) since he had a lot of trouble getting to sleep. (He can't sleep on his back anymore, and was so vocal in his own disgust about the possibility of. Leaning on people *gross* just to waste time sleeping that Kaito figured it was easier [re: spared Kokichi's pride] to see if the familiarity helped at all. It does.) Kaito and Kokichi are... (acquaintances? friends? close?) Connected now. You don't go through something like the hangar and come out the other side without some kind of bond.
I think kitty's name should be Bishop. Less for any christian ties than the idea of a therapy animal 'delinquent-pet-he-does-not-have-paperwork-for-but-keeps-in-his-dorm-anyway' as an "overseer" for him to talk to in absence of wax Rantaro. Also the third most powerful chess piece (probably after Kokichi and his 'beloved') and, though he will not verbally admit it, in part after the actual good robot android from Aliens. Because, of course,

sometimes she reminds him of a friend.

[DRV3 Postgame AU Masterpost]
Sorry it's taking me a bit to answer asks, I read every one and cherish them -! I'd figured I'd doodle a bit in the answers, but then ah. This one changed course from 'whats up with shuichi' to 'actually we're overdue for exposition'.
Oh, backstory?
Since Class 79 is at Hope's Peak For Real in this AU, Danganronpa can't very well be like canon. Our solution: infighting, sabotage, and plenty of Drama! Discussion under the cut.
I'd call it a non-Despair AU; the world's not over, and I'm currently thinking V3 is the only killing game at this point in the timeline, catalyzed by good old-fashioned envy (and, truthfully, indignation that strangers get to live out your fantasy while you and your friends are stuck in the building next door... the nerve!) Our mastermind isn't exactly a master hacker, but she's also not working alone. This Team Danganronpa isn't trying to physically harm anyone, but showing off their collective capacity to coordinate and maintain a takeover like this is bound to catch the administrator's eye. All press is good press, and there's a lot (of investor funding, mostly) riding on stories of TAPP's success, so HPA is incentivized to intervene ASAP. The team did not account for the aftershocks of making their peers virtually kill each other. Rantaro is having memory issues, Miu has to catch her breath (to her chagrin), Kiibo doesn't have a body, Kokichi has his cane... and that's just the beginning.
Whoops.
TAPP is kind of like "what if instead of synthetically pouring all of the talents into just the one dude, we experimented on some charity cases to see if we can just artificially build an Ultimate from the ground-up". The tech in the flashback-lights is definitely at play here, though HPA proper wasn't planning on a full memory wipe/personality override (but kept the theoretical capability in their back pocket in case things went south as Advanced Gaslighting) but uh. A bunch of highschoolers took hold of the controls, which is how you get a bunch of kids that sound like characters. They still are.
In this case, Team DR is like at least 3 at most 10 disgruntled teens in the Reserve Course tired of being overlooked. More looking for mischief than harm, but hey, if they can convince the interlopers being Ultimates isn't worth it and they should leave the school after all this and free up the floorspace? They won't argue. One of the things that strikes me about DR as a series is how its internal logic is less concerned with logistics than matching the emotional weight of what it can be like to be growing up and going through high school, so I'm trying to lean in that direction. I'm not completely sure what all this means for the THH and SDR2 crews, precisely, but we'll cross/burn that bridge when we get to it I guess!
This comic taught me a lot of new tools and techniques, hence it feels to me like it took forever but I am super stubborn and couldn't work on something else until the script in my head was actualized, which turned into 'the whole thing being done'.
There's a lot of easter eggs and little jokes in the first page in particular, should you seek them! Consider this another 'cut' in case you want to try and read the Small Handwriting on Rantaro and Miu's desks for yourself.
First:
I already brought up some of them in the WIP so I'll try not to repeat too much and just link here
Kokichi could join the toast, but doesn't (and yet he still sits with everyone). Kiibo doesn't drink anything at all but does want to be in the toast, so he gets a bluetooth speaker. Surely he will blast some vocaloid shortly.
That's Kaito's notebook Kichi is doodling in; Kaito draws a bunch of stars, and I tried to sort-of-almost emulate the drawing on Kichis whiteboard and also get across that it lacks line confidence (sketch over and over the same lines) and he keeps creasing the paper because post-press it doesn't take much activity for his hands to hurt. Also kinda wanted to imply that Kaito not only knows Ouma has his notebook, but probably gave it to him because he's learned it's inevitable Kichi will tease him and draw in it and at least being upfront about it he won't manage to hurt himself trying to steal it (phantom thief or not!) Kokichi's pride is a little hurt at first, but it becomes another of their small routines they don't acknowledge out loud that nevertheless are a kind of familiar comfort for both of them.
Space debris at terminal velocity is no joke man even a paint chip won't just crack your helmet (which you'd only survive via cartoon logic and presumably-magic duct tape) but easily crack your skull at least. I did a project on it in high school once, I should really look for it tbh

I really did make some actual charts based on data from the character bios comparing things like height, birthdate, etc. vs. victim, killer, or survivor status (tho that is a gantt chart template and not filled in, oop). TL;DR the most interesting one to me is this:
Tumblr media
Where basically when you account for how many students across the games are stated to have each blood type and the proportion of those students in a certain role, things are pretty even (AB has so few students its bars arent really representative of a trend, I just included them anyway) the type Os are disproportionately likely to be killers. For the record, there's one confirmed type O victim, and it's Nagito. I have no idea what this means. But if I am blursed with this knowledge, now you are too!
The code in tsumugis glasses isnt an easter egg bc i was getting tired and frustrated but the pods are roughly (no kiibo shifts things a bit) in class trial configuration, and on the base layer before all the Rest Of The Panel got added you could kind of tell who's who. Not so much anymore, so: Saihara has his hat on, for the record, and Kokichi is on his side while everyone else is on their back. Might even be a little restless, the feeling of underlying unreality playing substitute for some of (only some of, they're still being monitored) the surveillance anxiety. Fun!
And hey, as always, and especially if you've gotten this far: Thanks for reading, I hope you enjoyed!

Part 3 of the polygraph arc! [Part One] [Part Two] [AU Masterpost]
If you ask either of them, this never happened. In fact, they can't stand eachother, and Kokichi certainly does not find himself gravitating toward Miu's lab every so often to gossip and generally harass her while she works (and make sure she makes nonzero human contact for the week). Miu definitely does not decompress from the pressure of re-building your best friend's body from the ground up by making more little side-projects like this and testing them out on Kokichi, who is now fairly certain she isn't trying to kill him anymore even in spite of his paranoia, and usually agrees since it's, if nothing else, always at least kind of not-boring.
Obviously, she does not have it set in her mind that her next side-project is figuring out how to trick Kokichi into maybe-just-maybe taking some bare minimum measures to keep his chronic pain from getting worse. He, likewise, is not at all invested in occasionally checking in and pestering her until she actually goes to sleep.
Balanced.
This isn't the last time they'll have to talk about this, nor is everything magically fixed, but see. Closer to okay is a pretty big step up.
Here's that Ch.4 panel by itself, because I really like how it turned out
Let me know who you're curious about and want to see in this AU! I have a few more ideas already (none quite as complicated as this arc) but seeing what you guys think gives me life. Thank you for reading! <3

If I may ask, how do you think Kokichi acts around Maki after the game? Because I always imagined that what with the whole 'shooting him in the spine with a poisoned arrow' probably left him a little scared of her. I mean, if you consider that Strike-9 is likely named after strychnine, if the symptoms are similar, then that poison probably wrecked his body pretty good while him and Kaito were setting up his murder, he'd have been in considerable pain right up until the press came down. I can't imagine that Maki isn't a regular part of his nightmares.
Sorry it took a bit to answer. This is a lovely ask with much to think about, but your first question there really grabbed me and I immediately wrote a three-pager about it.

I think that after the game, Maki is actively trying to distance herself from her V3 persona. She's stated she doesn't like fighting in the first place in TDP, so in this universe I think she'd in the process of legitimately trying to change her title to SHSL Child Caregiver. It's kind of a probationary limbo in admin, proving she has the requisite skills to outright change tracks since IIRC there's not much if any precedent for it, but Maki works hard and has found herself opening up a bit more in the wake of surviving the simulation. She cut her hair to further put the past behind her (though she's not sure she quite likes it yet, it's a work-in-progress) and is, in part, trying to reclaim pieces of the childhood she functionally now never had. Kaede has taken her to I-Can't-Believe-It's-Not-Claire's at least once.
Now, Kokichi on the other hand.
He tries to avoid her like the plague, as he is (justifiably) terrified of her. They haven't spoken since the end of the game, but it isn't lost on Maki that Kokichi is the only person she's actually tried to assassinate (and, depending on who you ask, she succeeded. She, Kaito, and Kokichi each ultimately blame themselves for the press, even if Kokichi outwardly blames Maki for all of it and not just the torture) and it's just a bit difficult for her to stay angry. Especially when her one and only mark backs up against the wall and covers his upper right arm subconsciously so she cant shoot him there again when they pass each other in the hall.
Putting a nightmare sequence on the to-draw list, but Kichi has... thoughts, about potential poisoning he does as much as he can to suppress (only packaged food, even if that's not how he was poisoned before, because 'they'll have to get more creative now that it's not a game'; never leave your drink unattended anywhere, at all, even your own room; he started doing his own laundry again instead of asking Kirumi like the rest of Class 79, considering she defaulted to doing it to keep her hands busy and nobody else has really stopped her...) Little things.
Little things Kaito notices, now that he knows (now that he cares) to look. He thinks that they'll be friends, someday (but it'll be pretty far out, if it ever happens.) Mutual tolerance is a bit more viable.
Oh, hey. Looks like someone started listening to Miu.
