Johnny met Maria on campus when he was scouting for new victims. The only problem was that for once, he didn’t want to hurt the girl he was talking to. She was smart, funny and strong. Johnny immediately was attracted to her, in multiple ways. 

Maria actually did like Johnny, not in a romantic sense. When they first met on campus, she thought he was handsome and charming; the definition of a real southern gentleman. They laughed and talked for a while. It started with Johnny flirting and then they made small talk about school and where each person was from, all of that basic stuff. The more Johnny heard, the stronger his attraction grew. In only a short period of time, he had already decided he wanted Maria. And Maria just thought she made a funny and flirty new friend. 

After that first meeting, Johnny sought out Maria a few more times. Sometimes he would just lurk around campus and scope out her routine. Sometimes he would “accidentally” bump into her while he “walked to class” and they would chat. Maria enjoyed his company and thought he was sweet.

One day when they were enjoying the Texas sun, sitting outside on campus, Maria told Johnny about her little sister, Ana. Maria told him about how much she loved Ana and wished she could be in school with her, but Ana was too young. So after Johnny killed Maria, and the ‘73 kids show up on the Sawyer property, he knows Ana’s name. He uses it against her, the fact that he knows exactly who she is. It’s just another way that Johnny always enjoys having the upper hand. He loves sadistically, psychologically torturing his victims. 

When Maria asks Johnny if he had any siblings, he says he’s an only child (which isn’t necessarily a lie, we are just well aware that the Sawyer family tree is more than a little messy). He tells her that he has no family and he lives at school. 

Johnny wanted to bring Maria home and keep her as a sort of pet, his own little toy to play with, but he never wanted to truly hurt or kill her. Nancy immediately felt threatened by Maria’s presence in their home and in her son's mind. She forced Johnny to either kill Maria or she would. Knowing how messy his mother can get, Johnny opted for Maria to go out with just his own knife. He hates to admit his complicated feelings for the girl. He slit her throat and held her face while he watched the light fade from her eyes. He still thinks about her a lot. 

When the ‘73 kids come around, he hears Danny mention how he wants revenge for “his girlfriend” and it makes his vision turn red. Johnny says that he is only capturing and torturing Danny because he is making sure none of the kids escape. But in reality, he’s the meanest to Danny. He does not let any other family member get to him, he has to be the one to kill him. Just the thought of Maria and Danny together made Johnny rage.
