To take that line, which is so prevalent in pop culture, and turn it into a moment that shows how grief changes over time, how it becomes a lasting connection to a loved one, and a reminder that we love and miss them is beautiful.

The entire Darkstar sequence is not only stunning to look at, surprisingly emotional and thrilling, but it also does a pitch-perfect job of introducing who Mav is as a character to a new audience, as well as showing the existing audience how Mav is still Mav.

And the reason for that, as I have said elsewhere and I will be a broken record about, is that Rooster is, of course, talking about Goose... but he’s also talking about Mav. Plus, it’s tears of happiness because they’re family again.

5. Scene that made you laugh the most

You’re not expecting it on the first viewing, and it was such a fantastic way of breaking the tension because you’re relieved Rooster is okay, and they’re finally talking.

6. Underrated moment

So I want to highlight this moment between Hondo and Admiral Cain because it shows why Mav and Hondo are friends.

My other underrated moment is when Mav is in the bar watching Penny and Amelia. He’s on the outside looking in and you can see how much he craves to have that kind of life.

8. Favorite character

Let's take Mav being a favorite as a given. So my non-MAV favorite is Penny. God, she’s fabulous and every time I watch the movie I love her more and more. That Oprah Winfrey gif probably sums up my feelings about her best: "She is … the mother I never had. She is … the sister everybody would want. She is the friend that everybody deserves. I don't know a better person. "

Jennifer Connelly does such an excellent job hinting at how Penny is feeling internally and the things she wants to say but can’t, the conflict that comes with loving someone like Pete.

9. Favorite flying sequence

Maverick completing the course in 2:15. It’s thrilling every single time. And to see Mav from behind in the F-18 as he’s flying is such a small detail, but it gives it so much more intensity and puts you right in there. The supporting cast do a fantastic job of reacting in character. The more I watch the movie, the more I start to well up as Mav reaches the target, with the swell of the music and the look on Cyclone’s face. And Rooster too, watching with some pride and wondering how Mav is able to fly like that and how he can to.

10. Favorite hug

No dialogue needed, the hug says everything. Tom and Jennifer do a fantastic job of imbuing that relationship with so much love, respect and unspoken history.    

11. A fan theory, that you maybe don’t subscribe to, but you find neat.

Shipping wise, Hangman and Rooster are ex-lovers. I don’t ship them personally, but I can totally see why people read there relationship that way.

A fan theory I can see, but don’t subscribe to is that the movie is a death dream, as mentioned in this article, “I’m sure you’ve heard the popular theory that Maverick died in the opening Darkstar sequence, making the rest of the movie a death dream.”

Which fits with an observation from this article. “There’s a ghostlike quality to Maverick in that scene and others — in that early bar scene, where the kids almost see past him, and then later, when he shows up in his Navy whites to say bye to Jennifer Connelly. He feels like a ghost.”

Personally, if any part were to be a death dream I think it would be after dagger one is hit.

It’s normal for couples to fight. Every couple had their moments. But not you and Jake. He was your best friend, the two of you thick as thieves. Fights weren’t uncommon. One this massive and damaging, however, was.

You don’t even remember how it started or what you were arguing about. One thing led to another before it became an atomic shouting match. Hurtful words were said. Ones neither of you meant, though you both felt satisfaction whenever the other shrank into themselves because of it.

And then he walked out the front door, slamming it shut and shaking the entire house in its wake. Jake had never walked out in a fight before. For you, that was final. That was confirmation that he was leaving you. You sank to the floor then, collapsing against the wall as your sorrowful sobs echoed through the empty household.

It’s nearly midnight when he returns. His golden locks are unruly and his green eyes are accented by his bloodshot scleras. Jake shouldn’t have walked out. He felt the regret the second he stepped out the door. He shouldn’t have left, and as he came home to a pitch dark house, he knew he would have to deal with the consequences.

Jake slept on the couch that night and for the first time in his life, he had never felt so cold. He always ran warm. It was one of the things you loved about him. But that morning when he woke was the coldest he had ever been. Maybe he didn’t run warm. Maybe you were the one who made him that way.

He heard you before he saw you. Jake shot up from the couch, meeting you at the bottom of the stairs in a desperate attempt to beg you not to leave him. He waited, tensing as your eyes met his. Waiting for the moment you’d tell him to leave. Waiting for the moment for you tell him this was over.

But the moment never came. You practically stumbled down the stairs, throwing yourself at him. Your arms wrap around his neck while your legs go around his torso and you cry.

He feels you shaking against him and his heart shatters at his feet.

“I’m sorry,” he feels you whimper into the crook of his neck. “I’m so sorry. I shouldn’t have let you leave. I didn’t mean anything I said. I swear I didn’t mean it.” You were rambling, an anxious habit of yours. And then you said the one thing that made him break his resolve. “Please don’t leave me.”

Wrapping an arm around your waist and gently pressing a hand to your head, he sighs. “Oh, darling… I would never leave you. You could rip me into a million pieces and I still wouldn’t leave.”

“But-“

“Shhh,” he coos into your hair. “That’s how much I love you. I’m sorry too. I’m sorry that we fought. I’m sorry for what I said. I didn’t mean any of it either.”

You cry again, but this time in relief, before pulling back to cup his face in your hands. “I love you too.” You messily press your lips to his. Before he can reciprocate the motion you pepper kisses across the rest of his face, pulling the sweetest giggle from him.

The sound makes you smile and you lean your forehead against his.

“Darling,” he says against your lips.

You hum.

“We still need to talk about it.”

“I know,” you breathe. “Just let me hold you for a bit.”

He squeezes you tighter and let’s you hold him for as long as you need.

I just read spoonful of sugar and I fucking loved it so much (Jake is obviously a cat in person form how have I never seen that before???) but I also saw this tiktok right before I read it and I had to share because it feels like this would be Bradley and cat!Jake once they start to get along

It took me a MINUTE to respond to this and I'll tell you why: you sent this RIGHT AFTER I saw that tiktok and joked to Forsty about it, so anyway here we are, 10+ years into their relationship and--

(temporary) amnesia/"I don't understand what that means."

“I don’t understand what that means,” Ice blinks. 

Maverick drops his head to hands and begins to say the alphabet backwards in his head to keep himself from throwing the damn clipboard out the window. 

“Ice,” Maverick tries again, “It’s a consent form. You have to sign it so that I can take you home,” 

Ice nods, worrying his bottom lip between his teeth. His eyebrows scrunch as he re-reads the papers in front of him for now the third time since the nurse began the discharge process.

Maverick can't find it in himself to be too put out, though. The bandage around Ice’s forehead must be bothering him since his fingers keep inching their way up to pull at it as he reads. Maverick, unwilling to stare at Ice in discomfort any longer, stands and crosses the distance between his chair and Ice’s bed.

Why they’d require a temporary amnesiac to fill out medical forms, Maverick does not know. But what he does know is that Ice is exhausted, likely in far more pain than he’s letting on, and that hospitals give Mav the creeps. 

All compelling reasons to get this show on the road. 

“Here,” Mav says, sitting down on the bed’s edge and plucking the clipboard from Ice's hands, “What are you confused about?” 

Ice has done a good job filling it out so far - no small feat given the massive concussion and head wound he earned himself this morning by accidentally smashing the edge of his car door into his forehead. Maverick had nearly had a heart attack when he found him crumpled in the garage in a pool of blood. So much for beating the morning traffic.

Ice has spelt his name correctly, has the right address, and even marked down the correct pharmacy around the block from their house. Mav squints his eyes - a perfect mirror of Ice before - as he combs through the forms to find the hold up. 

Ice huffs and points to the bottom section of the second to last page in the packet. It reads: Caregiver Consent Form. It’s a check list of the basics - caution when using ovens and other hot surfaces, no operating heavy machinery (Mav’s assuming that would include an F-14), and recommendations to lock up hazardous materials out of sight of the patient. 

Ice, clearly running low on patience and eager to get out of the bustling ER, draws his finger over the large paragraph of legal jargon that has Maverick’s eyes swimming. Ice points out Maverick’s legal name as Ice's designated caregiver and then taps on the portion of the form left blank: Relationship to patient. 

He looks back to Maverick, eyes wide, and asks, “What am I supposed to put here?” 

Maverick blinks at the form. Relationship. Huh.

They’ve been living together for the better part of two years now with Ice having moved in once he joined Maverick back at Top Gun. And they’ve been um, well, together for pretty much just as long. They never talked about labels but it’s been exclusive since the start and Ice has been wearing Mav’s dog tags since January. 

Maverick doesn’t have the slightest idea what that makes them but friends sure as hell doesn’t fit. He smirks a bit, and peers around their section of the ER to make sure nobody’s looking. The ER is in total chaos anyways - nurses scrambling, children screaming, and what looks to be a fist fight soon to be erupt between two elderly women fighting over the lone issue of People Magazine. 

Maverick leans in and presses a quick kiss to Ice’s cheek, and then takes advantage of Ice's poor, frazzled state to snatch the pen from Ice’s grasp. Maverick delights in the flush that colors Ice's cheeks, and then he begins to write. Ice recovers from his shock quickly, sputters once he reads what Maverick's writing, and then shoves at Maverick’s arm.

“Are you fucking crazy?” Ice whispers furiously as Mav breaks out into giggles. 

“Alright, alright, calm down,” Mav laughs as he scratches out his now aborted attempt at Boyfriend. He instead opts for the safer Roomate. “It’s a Civvy hospital, nobody would’ve found out,” 

“You’re an idiot,” Ice huffs fondly, shoving again at Mav’s arm. Ice quickly glances around the place and decides that the cost is clear. Or maybe it's the pain killers dulling his judgement. Either way, Ice drags his fingers lightly down Maverick’s forearm and then intertwines their fingers. 

“Take me home,” Ice whispers. He squeezes once, Maverick squeezes back twice.

I really like the idea of longer chapters and more content. I think it would benefit the story to add angst or just extra character/relationship building.

If we choose option 1 (finish the 26 chapters within the competition) will we still get to see them outside of the competition? 🥺

I would love to see maybe some bonus content of how this dynamic works out in the real world between the 8 of them.

Of course, so the current plan is 19 chapters inside the show one chapter for the final day and then 6 chapters outside, one for each week (it would cover the first 6 weeks outside the show) and then I’d do one special one of them a year later to show you all what they are currently doing.

i have this image ive yet to incorporate into any of my writing where ice spends his whole life with the USNA ring on the fourth finger of his right hand & feels a little imbalanced. something’s missing. & then he marries maverick, and he has the wedding ring on the fourth finger of his left hand, and finally he is complete. he has both. he is both a great officer and someone capable of love. neither side is subservient to the other anymore. they coexist in harmony at the end of the day. and of course that’s something maverick would respect.
