kinda crazy how barbie has taken on like Biggest Oscar Snubs Ever status despite being literally one of the most nominated films this year

apparently the reason may december is being snubbed during awards season is because a lot of actors REALLY didn’t like what it had to say about actors who take on the roles of real people, and the idea that a bunch of former theatre kids might be sensitive about criticism of the industry they work in is, to me, just so shocking

not even gonna throw my hat into the barbie (2023) discourse because at this point, everyone has said what i wanted to say and more eloquently at that. (my feelings on that movie are very well known to anyone that's followed me for some time now btw) HOWEVER, i can't believe you can point out that greta gerwig is THE first filmmaker ever to ever get their first 3 films (solo directorial efforts to be more exact) nommed for best picture and that it's a record that 2 of the nominees in best director haven't achieved (for ref: scorsese didn't get a best picture nom til raging bull while nolan didn't score a bp nom til inception. funny enough, tdk was a HUGE part of the reason why the academy decided to expand the number of slots in bp from 5 to 10.) and you have ppl in the youtube comments accusing you of belittiling their accomplishments to lift greta up all bc you stated a damn FACT. youtube, like twitter, has the same exact kind of "oh so you like pancakes?? then you must HATE waffles" energy that i find insufferable, sdhfjkgjh.

I do get where people are coming from with being frustrated that Ryan Gosling is nominated but Margot Robbie isn’t, what with the film being literally called Barbie, not Ken.
BUT like... America Ferrera is right there? Being nominated for the equivalent award to Ryan Gosling? She delivers the monologue that encapsulates the message of the whole film. That’s more than worthy of recognition to me. And I feel like that’s being less focused on than the fact that Margot wasn’t nominated.
Now Greta being snubbed for best director on the other hand…

A study on the character of Ambrosius
Nimona (Netflix)
Am I the only one who sees the sharp difference between the photos?
Tumblr media
(Ambrosius seconds before having to use his forced smile to please the audience)
Tumblr media
About halfway through the film, we see Ambrosius freaking out under the pressure of having to hunt down someone he loves who is working alongside one of the capital's greatest threats, he says he never wanted to be descended from Gloreth and that he didn't want to be the figure he was represents the ideas of someone who lived hundreds of years ago.
Tumblr media
In the first few seconds of the film we see a complete stereotype of a golden boy, and then we see a completely funny and soft man when he meets his boyfriend Ballister.
Tumblr media
Already throughout the rest of the film we see a lonely guy who just lost his boyfriend, completely closed with his teammates and constantly being snubbed in the work environment even though he is the purest noble of the team.
Tumblr media
I saw that there were a lot of people complaining about Ballister's attitude of forgiving someone who caused him a lot of pain during the narrative but for me it's important to also look at things from Ambrosius' point of view, at no point in the film do we see Ambrosius really feeling Ballister's anger, he constantly backs off when he meets him again and he bends the rules by not following the protocol of neutralizing the threat immediately, he doesn't show it but he was always freaking out at the idea of once again disappointing the man he loved most and considered the his whole life as a best friend, he didn't know if he followed the rules that haunted him all his life just because he had the misfortune of being born into the lineage of the most famous heroine, he never asked for this but that's his obligation, his personality change in the movie is one of the things I like most about his character, he does have a life of privileges but he never seems to like it he just wanted to please everyone always and be by his boyfriend's side to be able to deal with all the pressure.
Tumblr media
I like the character of Ambrosius precisely because he breaks all the stereotypes that his appearance represents, although we don't see much, he is much more than what the movie shows us

what are some upcoming xiyouji media that you’re excited for?
Here are a few!
Tumblr media
2020 Journey to the West: Conquer the Demons 西游降魔篇 - I think this is like a re-write of the whole Chow Xiyouji films into a tv series!
Tumblr media
2020 I'm Not a Great Sage 我不是大圣 - the Six-Earred Macaque being seen as a hero when he is trying so hard to be a villain. (Correction there are two movies with the same name and I got the poster for the wrong one whoops)
Tumblr media
2021 Seven Sages 七圣 - a movie all about Wukong's brotherhood like with Snub-Nose Monkey King or Flood Dragon King!
Tumblr media
2021 Sun Wukong: Heaven Devourer Monkey孙悟空之噬天魔猴 Trailer - the animation for this looks AMAZING AND I CANT WAIT!!!
Tumblr media
2022 King of Confusion: The Rise of the Great Sage / Four Monkeys in Confusion 混世之王:混世四猴 /混世之王之大圣崛起 - Super excited to see Wukong and ALL THE SPIRITUAL MONKEYS!!! FINALLY THE WHOLE GANG IS HERE
Tumblr media
2022 Bajie: Movie Preview 八戒:電影搶先看 - I am a huge Bajie fan and this just looks ADORABLE!
Tumblr media
2022 The Lower Boundary of the Canopy of Bajie八戒之天蓬下界 - Another Bajie love story and honestly this one looks precious, he really trying to just get his weapon back but oh no he is being WOOED!
Tumblr media
2022 Red Boy: Newborn Calf红孩儿之初生牛犊 - super fun animation! Really want to see the back story in this one!
Tumblr media
2022 Monkey King and JJ大圣和江流儿 - I NEED THIS I NEED THIS LIKE WATER I NEED HERO IS BACK WUKONG TO BE A FATHER PLEASE
Tumblr media
2023 The Legends of Monkey King 凌云志 - This was based on like a web novel and it sound more insane that it should be. can't say it is "good" but it def sounds interesting at LEAST.
Tumblr media
2025Monkey King: The Havoc in Heaven西游记之大圣闹天宫 - I have heard that THIS is going to be a prequel to the 2015 Hero is Back Movie SO !!!!!!!!!!!! WOULD LOVE TO SEE MORE HERO IS BACK WUKONG HE IS LIKE MY SECOND FAVORITE!!!
Tumblr media
2030Monkey King: Flame Mountain孙悟空之火焰山 - the animation here just looks so interesting and Wukong looks so uncaney valley I'm really interested about this one.
Tumblr media
NullThe Monkey Prince - this one is kinda a cheat but it is a WUKONG-inspired character and honestly, this looks like a lot of fun!!
Tumblr media
NullJourney to the West - I can only PRAY that the art style of the poster for this movie is the same as the animation. I have NEVER seen a Xiyouji movie done by the French but if they make it this whimsical and colorful attitude I'm HERE FOR IT.
Needless to say, I'm excited about a lot of things.

So I just finished watching most of the Giallo/horror films Carroll Baker made during her time in Italy from 1967- 1975, and I loved all of them! They all have their own lurid, stylish, and gruesome retro charm.
The first four posters are her film collabs with director Umberto Lenzi, the fifth pic is her on the set of So Sweet, So Perverse with Lenzi and Trintignant, and the last three films were directed by Romolo Guerrieri, Corrado Farina, and Luigi Scattini, who were some of the finest B-movie directors in Europe.
So how did a famous Old Hollywood actress like Carroll Baker ended up filming sleazy Giallos in Italy? As seen in Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time in Hollywood, many American actors would bitch about having to go to Europe for work (aka DiCaprio’s character).
She was blacklisted by creepy producer, Joseph E. Levine, after he tried to control her career with an iron fist, cheat her out of money, and possibly tried to sleep with her for roles. After a divorce and the snub from Hollywood, Carroll made the right move by going to Europe, becoming fluent in Italian, and networking with local directors.
Carroll’s Italian films were panned in the USA, as stuffy Americans film critics saw her venture as a downgrade from working with the likes of Elia Kazan, George Stevens and John Ford. In reality, many Old Hollywood movies seem dated and sterile, whereas Euro cinema of the 60s/70s retains a fresh, artistic, innovative vibe even today and a dedicated cult following.
She said of that period of her career:
"I think I made more films [there] than I made in Hollywood, but the mentality is different. What they think is wonderful is not what we might ... it was marvelous for me because it really brought me back to life, and it gave me a whole new outlook. It's wonderful to know about a different world."

I actually think the Andrew Scott bafta snub is so much worse than the Oscar snub. The Oscar snub is like we didn’t notice this movie at all it wasn’t played widely enough. The bafta snub is like “beautiful film to have made unless you’re the gay lead who carried the whole thing” deeply unserious country once again

“I feel sorry for King Charles, rest of BRF and rest of United Kingdom. They welcomed them with open arms, did more than they should to accomody them and this is level of gratitude shown?! Unbelievable.” - Submitted by Anonymous
“I'm not a fan of King Charles, but do people seriously think he's racist? The man who walked his biracial daughter in law down the aisle with no objection when her entire family snubbed her? As far as I know he doesn't have a problem with his grandchildren being 1/4 black either.” - Submitted by Anonymous
“A friend of Meghan reportedly said that she (Meghan) viewed Charles as a "second father". Actually feel sorry for the man (especially since he gave her away), not knowing he would receive the Thomas Markle treatment.” - Submitted by Anonymous
“If the RF really bullied Meghan off/were racists towards Meghan, then why was Harry allowed to marry her? It's that simple. The RF had the biggest chance to bully her off in H&M's dating stages, and had she not married in then yeah, I would actually believe the RF was indeed racist, but the opposite happened. They were the ones who bullied themselves off LOL, especially once they found out they would never be given the same kind of importance as W&C (They would still be/could've been FAR more important dynastically-wise than Andrew, Edward/Sophie, and Anne/Tim and their families + Margaret's descendants + Elizabeth and Margaret's cousins and their families which is why I don't buy their victimhood) and also because they realized they couldn't just demand stuff they wanted on their terms (like A&L's titles for example. Ultimately, those were given to them due to the letters patent issued by King George V in 1917 that H&M refused to respect.) You want me to feel sorry for crybabies who also happen to be millionaires? Check your privilege and f*ck off. I know people support H&M because they want the drama/want a genuine reason to hate the BRF/genuinely want there to be another victim like Diana was (why TF would you want that LMAO go check yourselves). But it's just that. Just a middle-aged woman and a near-middle-aged man acting like 5- year-olds just because they thought they could get away with sh*t but had a rude awakening.” - Submitted by Anonymous
“I think royal family was very supportive and welcoming towards Meghan. They let her attended official royal event as a fiancee while Kate and other married-ins had to wait. They were also very supportive of their career as a actress and let her do films after marriage while meghan herself didn't want to. They even let her wear a white dress and tiara even tho she was previously married, HER FIL WALKED HER DOWN THE AISLE, how sweet is that. Her in-laws paid for the whole thing and even the dress” - Submitted by Anonymous

i loved the Barbie movie just as much as everyone else did but i honestly think it’s embarrassing seeing so many (mostly white) women having complete meltdowns over “snubs” that don’t exist.
margot and greta are both being nominated as executive producers and margot spent the whole press tour talking about how excited she was to put the movie together by picking a director, having greta write the script, making casting decisions, etc. etc.
being nominated for best picture as a producer is a huge accomplishment that shouldn’t be overlooked! and also so many women who worked on the film are being recognized for their acting, costumes, production design, etc. and that should be celebrated!
the same people mad about these “snubs” are overlooking america ferrera’s nomination. or insisting that lily gladstone “didn’t do that much!?” like do you hear yourselves? embarrassing stuff.
like if hillary clinton of all people is coming out to make a statement and be in your side on this, you should know you’re on the losing team here.
this debate has nothing to do with actual feminism. it’s shallow white feminism which actually does defeat the whole purpose of the Barbie movie.

Opinion:
Best Picture should go to Killers of the Flower Moon, I am so weirded out by how snubbed this movie was by all awards
Best direction should go to Yorghos Lanthimos (I know all Nolan fans were waiting for ages but let’s be real Oppenheimer is not his best directing work and his directing was super tame and conventional compared to Lanthimos’)
Best cinematography should go to Poor Things, why did Oppenheimer take this for a few men discussing in a room, that’s the whole movie!
Best score should go either to Poor Things or Killers of the Flower Moon, seriously, I did not even notice Oppenheimer had music lol
Best Leading Actress was deserved by both Emma Stone and Lily Gladstone, for different reasons. It would be so much better if Lily competed in the supporting actress category.
Best leading actor was fairly given to Cillian Murphy
Best song (don’t shoot me) should go to I am just Ken, I know you will argue that the man song shouldn’t win in the Barbie movie but.. whose fault is it that they made it the most memorable song of the film? Not mine
Best editing was fairly given to Oppenheimer
Costume and production design were fairly given to Poor Things, although I would be equally happy if they had gone to Barbie.
Make up was fairly given to Poor Things for the fantastic work on Willem Dafoe among various other things, while Oppenheimer was uneven, they did RDJ great but everyone else looks like fake shit when “older”
Best Supporting Actor was Robert Downey Junior’s moment through and through, I honestly pulled through the entirety of Oppenheimer solely for how impressive, convincing and unrecognisable he was. Also, people saying Mark Ruffalo should win, um, no. He’s lovely but come on. No. I am even weirded out people praise his performance so much… the man from Poor Things who deserved a nomination here was Willem Dafoe.

'Last month, the BBC offered an apology of sorts after a red-carpet reporter at the Baftas asked Andrew Scott, star of the film All of Us Strangers, about fellow Irish actor Barry Keoghan’s appendage. This had been the subject of conversation thanks to Keoghan’s naked dancing in the film, Saltburn, in which Keoghan’s floppy bishop steals the final scene. To settle this nagging concern the BBC turned to a gay man. ‘There was a lot of talk about prosthetics. How well do you know him?’ the reporter asked an annoyed Scott who shook his head and walked away.
Had a female actress been asked to authenticate another woman’s breasts, the scandal that would have ensued goes without mentioning, but the BBC dusted it off. ‘Our question to Andrew Scott was meant to be a light-hearted reflection of the discussion around the scene and was not intended to cause offence,’ the organisation said.
The gynarchy has made clear that objectifying men is perfectly fine and, after all, what’s a little light-hearted homophobia when gay movies are having a renaissance? All of Us Strangers – nominated for six Baftas but ultimately snubbed, and Saltburn, nominated for five – joined a handful of other gay titles that studios have banked on attracting an audience beyond the 4 per cent of the population who might traditionally see those films.
Where the box office didn’t pay off, critical acclaim largely has. 2020’s Supernova, staring Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci as a 60-something gay couple, and last year’s drama Passages directed by Ira Sachs, have also inched into a market where such movies typically didn’t belong.
‘Why are gay movies always so sad,’ people used to ask in the 1990s. Thirty years later, nothing has changed. Gay flicks tend to have three themes – loneliness, death, and villainy – and this recent batch of movies is no exception. The miniseries Feud: Capote vs. The Swans, released last month and based on writer Truman Capote’s final years, nicely encompasses all three.
‘New film All of us Strangers centers on gay loneliness and trauma,’ a headline on NBC News read, as though that’s anything new. And while I don’t know what ‘trauma’ is, I do know that gay people have always fixated on it and, increasingly, so does everyone else. Gay films haven’t changed, but the audience has. Women are lonelier, more promiscuous, and more atomised than ever and now they’ve discovered a whole sub-genre of cinema speaking to that and aiming to nurture those anxieties. Just a hunch, but the ladies sobbing along at home to Supernova are probably childless and spend many hours a week on Zoom calls.
When a gay film meanders too deeply into gay insider baseball, like Billy Eichner’s 2022 romantic comedy Bros, it bombs. The most resonate gay movie of all time might continue to be 1970’s The Boys in the Band, but the 2020 remake flopped, probably because it’s a story devoid of hope and beauty, only messiness and casual destruction –something gay men understand but remains far too raw and excruciating for women to enjoy.
Then there’s the other side of it – the neutered gay fan fiction written by and for women, like Amazon Prime’s horrendously stupid 2023 film Red, White & Royal Blue, which offers women magical gay pets to carry around in their dreams. When I asked the feminist writer Louise Perry about these films, she said:
"These are usually gay relationships represented in a uniquely feminine way: intensely emotional, no casual sex, very unlike gay porn for men.
I suspect that young women find these gay fantasies attractive because they’re scared of the asymmetries inherent to straight relationships, in which women are always the more physically vulnerable party. So, they invent fictional gay men and give them a style of sexuality more typical of women.
She continued: ‘Will & Grace was obviously created for women because the gay male characters are weirdly asexual,’ reiterating something gay men have speculated for some time, noting that the bitchy and boozy, heterosexual Karen Walker was the only character they gravitated toward.
That’s not to say women can’t write great gay stories. Brokeback Mountain, the most critically acclaimed gay movie of all time, was based on a short story by Annie Proulx, who revealed in a 2009 interview her frustration with fan letters wishing the story had ended on a positive note. Those ‘idiots’ who want a happy ending, she said, overwhelmingly tended to be men.'

EVERYNODY GO WATCH THIS INTERVIEW RIGHT NOW
youtube
BUT LIKE IM HALFWSY THRU IT RIGHT NOW AND TWO THINGS HAVE STUCK OUT
Nicholas Galitzine said that about 2/3 of the movie is told from Alex’s POV while 1/3 is told from Henry’s POV which I am IMMENSELY excited for oh my god
AND ALSO
Taylor Zakhar Perez just said that apparently in the movie Alex and Henry met at a climate conference where Henry snubs Alex and Alex then wants nothing to do with him, finds him a kind of jerk. BUT (and I’m so happy we finally got confirmation on this because it’s a huge part of Henry’s character) Henry had just lost his dad so that’s why he was rude. Oh I’m gonna miss the whole Olympics thing but it seems all that changed was the setting of the meeting and that makes me so glad
I’m super excited to see what changes they’ve made to the film ngl?? Like I think I said this somewhere but honestly I don’t even care if this is a good adaptation anymore I just want it to be a good movie and I am positive it will be
That being said if they don’t have the “tell me to leave” love confession word for word and then Henry and his speech the next morning, I will be devastated because that’s my favorite part of the book❤️❤️❤️
HASKISSJSJSKAK IM SO EXCITED FOR THIS MOVIE IM GONNA POP

I've lowkey been annoyed at Paul M for awhile now and seeing him get a nomination and Andrew did not is adding that annoyance no matter how unfair that is for him. And he's about to start filming another gay movie with Josh O'connor and they'll probably get nominations for that when it comes out but actual out gay actors are constantly getting looked over. Jonny saying he did not expect to win because he's out but if he was straight he wouldn't even have to think about it, of course he'd win because he was the best.
see tbh i dont think this is paul’s fault bc he didnt have anything to do with the voting, so it’s all on the awards
but i am fr so pissed at the andrew snub, first at cca and now at baftas - and mind you, these are just the noms
it brings back that conversation though about straight actors playing gay roles and getting flowers for it while gay actors miss out on it - even if they play straight or queer roles
i am not gonna go into the whole discourse of acting and who should get what role etc but at the end of the day, queer actors deserve the same accolades their straight counterparts get irrespective of the character they play bc no matter how much some people try to deny it, they do NOT get that recognition and opportunities the same way straight actors do
thats why jonny’s win for fellow travelers meant so much to me and people from the community and to him as well, bc he (and everyone at that table) knew that this isn’t something that happens too often and they had to fight for it - both personally and professionally
also look at this number - this just broke my heart and i am so glad that colman is on his way to change that, i hope andrew gets that chance too
