Overview: This story is an exaggerated utopian appearing dystopia made by exploring my own and other strangers' online perspectives of what it means to be radically Left, in an over dramatized and conspiracy like way. My intention with this is to allow each reader to conclude if this is right or wrong and challenge their own biases socio-politically. (But, tbh I think a place like Tolerance wouldn’t be too bad.)

Logline: Through the Integration program, a bigot lives with her case worker in Tolerance as she carries her baby to full term.

Summary: Kindra Helzer is a case worker in Tolerance, a intercontinental society that is composed of tolerant communities despite cultural or religious differences. She represents outside of Tolerance individuals from the "other" communities- districts labeled by their lack of acceptance of others and their personal prejudices. Her newest, Mazie Steward, a pregnant woman from 'Westboro' the district of hatred of the LGBT community. Kindra attempts to extend an olive branch to Mazie, a woman who personally threatens her very existence, in hope of giving the baby a life in Tolerance through the Integration Program.

*NOTE: This is very sensitive territory, as it deals with a transwoman interacting with a transphobe throughout the entirety of the novel. I am cis, and I want to represent many sexual orientations and gender identities in all of my works. Most of my stories I had in my head since I was in middle school. Of course some of these concepts can be very problematic in its original inception, as I was literally 11-15 at the time of creating these stories in my head. Knowing what I know now I want to shed light to various experiences different from mine as respectfully and tastefully as possible. I do not believe any marginalized group needs to coddle or beg for their abusers or oppressors to accept or validate them. I want to have trans beta readers read this part of this duology and tell me what I am doing wrong regarding this character other characters and the interactions themselves. I do NOT want to do a disservice.*

"Will you come with me?" It sounds childish even to me but desperation drowns out my shame.

Yuri's shoulders loosen, weighed under the words he wishes to say and those he must. "I can't. You know that your uncle - that the General - doesn't like me to leave him for very long."

He is right. Ivan would never permit Yuri to be away for more than a few hours and only that at his express command. Yuri would not go against Ivan.

Locations in The Lost Prince - Kuzgrad

When we pass the tall iron gates of Kuzgrad, I am filled with that once familiar feeling of foreboding. It is the old chill that had always awaited me at the Imperial Palace, a reminder of the ghosts that once inhabited this place. I stifle a shiver as I step from the car, looking up at the old, craggy grey face of the ancient building, unable to throw off the sense of being surveyed from the empty windows. But this place is not the Imperial Palace, a sprawl of Vasily might, no this place is darker and far more ancient, the very stones embedded with their blood, their dead, their essence. This place is older than all of the places I have ever or could ever known put together.

But there is no name for the little palace at sits in his shadow. It has had a hundred in the last thousand years but none of them have last the course. Veins of crumbling cobbled walls betray its ancient roots against the smooth skin of modern, smoothed facades. Turrets rise straight as lances, onion-capped and bearded with ivy. Blind gargoyles and fanciful beasts preside overhead, spotted with lichen and webbed with frost. The windows are still in their frames, the diamond panes yellowed with age.

Less a palace and more a house. Grandpapa always gently corrected me when I called this place a palace. Father would gruffly remind me that palaces were our vast homes in Bevulsk, Corzberg, Kosken, Derm, the Imperial Palace and Tamolasyn. Kuzgrad was merely a large manor estate compared to them.

A pair of stone wolves flank the door, watchful and blind. The door is ajar, cracked open a span of mere inches.

The shriek of the hinges sends a judder up my arm. Light brushes across the dust-coated floor, falling on the indents of fresh footprints made hours ago. The windows have been clumsily boarded up, the light fixtures and frames on the wall draped with ragged sheets. Nothing has been removed, only hidden from prying eyes.

‘You do have friends, don’t you?’

‘Of course, I do.’

‘Do you?’

I scoff , shaking my head at her while I rack my brain for a friend, searching for a name. It comes after a moment. ‘Polastry. Private Polastry.’

‘Oh, alright.’ Erika holds her peace for a stretch. ‘What’s his first name?’

‘He–’ I don’t know. I never asked. We are friendly but I have only ever addressed him as Polastry. Learning first names was too close to fraternising.

I had formed this link with Nikolai purely out of my desire to do right by Vastia. But now, it's more than that. I count Nikolai as a friend. He’s perhaps my first friend, barring the boys in Novavinsk or Polastry. He’s my friend.

‘It’s a shame you’re cooped up here. I rather missed you.’ Olezka frowns at my stunned expression. ‘What, Alekks? Of course, I missed you. You’re my friend.’

‘Friend?’

Olezka’s eyes fall on my face, his grin softening a little. ‘Alekks, you brainwashed poster-boy. Of course, you’re my friend.’

I can’t quite meet his gaze, not because of embarrassment – I don’t want him to see my smile.

The Vereselo are the secret police in Vastia. Formed after the Revolution from veteran soldiers, they replaced the police force. Only a handful of former police were inducted into the ranks, however it was noted that many of these men had histories of violence, brutality and disobedience in their jackets. The Vereselo are the terror of the Vastian people. Their power is absolute, their reach unknown and their methods unspeakable. Their sudden arrivals and perchance for mass arrests cause widespread mistrust among families, friends and neighbours.

Character Introduction | The Lost Prince | Princess Zinaida, Grand Duchess of Kozem

"That's my mother."

My lungs constrict. It takes everything not to look at him, not to flinch at the implication.

"She died. During the Revolution."

Died. A chill runs through me. It is too simple a word to suffice what they did to her - her, her husband and six of her seven sons.

The seventh clasps the catch on the locket containing her image, stowing her back under his shirt next to his heart.

Zinaida was Olezka's mother, Crown Prince Mikhail's only aunt. Infamous for her imperious nature, she often came across as cold and distant but was in fact an incredibly selfless, charitable and warm person. She married one of the wealthiest Grand Dukes in Vastia and was loving mother to nine sons and two daughters. She lost her daughters and third son in infancy. She was murdered during the Revolution, survived by her youngest son, Olezka who now lives in exile.

There, outside a low stone cottage bearded with ivy and honeysuckle, is my mother. She stands at the gate, shaking the hand of a man with tears in his eyes. She laughs at something he says, calling a blessing through the door before turning around.

The smile slides off her face. For a long moment, we just stare at one another. We have not seen one another in six years, not after I walked out the door to go to Ivan.  She has not changed. Her dark hair is pinned up under her cap. Her face is still smooth. She is dressed for work, her proud uniform under her coat. Her eyes sweep over me, taking in every inch of me.  I’ve changed. I’m not the boy who left here. Suddenly, I am grateful that I didn’t put on my uniform. Mama sets down her bags and crosses the distance between us. She wraps her arms around me, clasping me tightly to her. She even smells the same, of lemon soap and linen. When I had left, we had been of height, now I can rest my chin on top of her head. ‘Alekky.’ Then all of a sudden, it is as if none of it has every happened. Absurdly, I want nothing more than to spill everything out to her, all of it. I want to tell her everything, absolutely everything.

The dangerous thought wakes me up like a slap. I can't trust her. Not any more.

‘I had to keep an eye on Alekks.’

‘Because he’s suddenly developed a tape worm?’ I gesture to the rather large amount of food on the table by the sofa.

‘No, because of the concussion–’ Olezka stammers to a choke, eyes lifting over my shoulder where the others have grown very still. ‘Um, because… That is to say... He didn't do anything.'

Alekks throws him a look, something torn between amusement, admiration and pain.

That's the odd thing about him. With his good-humoured wry commentary on the world and his endless quest to be kind toward me, I can sometimes forget who he is. Not just a Prince of the Realm - but the victim of that terrible incident that befell his entire family, leaving him the sole witness and survivor.

Olezka catches me studying him but he doesn't remark on it. I suppose he's seen worse sights than the pity in my eyes.
