Sorry to bother you. I wanted to ask if you were willing to give advice on how to avoid the 'Friends Who Never Hang' tropes? Because I'm hesitant to make more main characters because I'm not sure if I can make their bond close between all of them and you seem to have a grip on the Heartless gang's relationship. Thanks.

At least for me and my storytelling preferences, I think my stance would be that there's actually no need to worry about making a close bond between *all* of your main characters at all!

It's a bit hard to articulate, and I'm definitely thinking from more of a manga mindset so bear with me lol -- but trying to make sure that everyone on your main cast all get along with everyone else on the main cast, and feeling the need to give a 'proper' spotlight to every possible combination of characters to convince your audience that 'they really are all friends with a close bond, see how they all hang out!?' Can run the risk of looking like this:

and leave your story feeling bland/stagnant as you kinda slog through unnecessary scenes between characters just for the sake of proving that they do all interact an adequate amount.

Whereas - (again, at least in my experience) - building a group primarily around their ties to your Main-main character(s) like this:

is a method that leaves much more room for you as a writer to both focus on the character that's specifically meant to be at the forefront, while also making it easier to explore which other combos could then actually be fun to give more screen time to in order to *build up* those close bonds, rather than worrying about the end result and just trying to make everybody get along right from the get-go!

(Also! Don't feel like if you start out with a bunch of varied colorful connections that they all have to be turned into bright green friendly bonds by story's end! Making some characters a bit closer over time but still not besties is a-ok! They can unite for a common goal but still get on each others nerves forever! There are no rules! Be cringe, be free!)

Okay I made a list of who I think are contenders for deputy, and I'll mention why as well. Please let me know if I've mischaracterized any of these guys.

1. Canarywish. Firstly, Canarywish was mentored by Ravenstar himself, being his brother Littleleaf's first kit. At just 9 moons old she had to witness the death of a loner that could have possibly been saved, if not for Ravenstar. This shaped her a lot, as she went from the "loving" trait to simply "charismatic" when she graduated a moon later at only 10. Canarywish suffered a lot at the hands of her uncle, Ravenstar, and would be a perfect successor to Wolfstar because of this. Secondly, tieing into the poetic connection with Ravenstar, Canarywish mentored Jaystripe, the only one of his kits who acknowledges who their father is and actually SPEAKS to him in the Dark Forest. Finally, Canarywish was one of the cats who was lost most recently, and in that time she lost her entire family. I believe that Flamefall will see not just her competence and need to prove herself but understand how much she's lost and what the deputy position could mean for her.

2. Ashblink. Firstly, Ashblink was Sleepydawn's mate. I feel like people tend to overlook him because of Sleepydawn's popularity, but he was very brave and controlled during the whole exile and break-up. Also, the same moon that they become mates, Ashblink teases his sister Sootstep for having a crush on Flamefall, which I thought was worth pointing out, although Sootstep ends up with Toadbelly. Secondly, Ashblink and Flamefall were mentors at the same time--to siblings!! Ashblink mentored Tallfoot, and Flamefall mentored Bluestorm. I imagine they had to have trained together, especially because the siblings would want to compete. Thirdly, Ashblink is incredibly loyal to the Clan. He has been scarred three times; by saving Brambletuft from a fox, the second time by an eagle, and the third time by rats. And yet he has persisted!! Fourthly, although he's getting older, I think he still has some kick in him and has the "valuable insight" trait to boot. The only reason he isn't first on my list is because of his age. Finally, as someone who grew up right after Flamefall and at the same time as Wolfstar, Ashblink is not just a respected senior warrior, but a friend of these two.

3. Bluestorm. Firstly, Bluestorm is the kit of Sandsnap, who was murdered by Ravenstar for being from Cricketclan. So, once again, Bluestorm definitely has a connection to our most prominent plot point thus far (and the reason Wolfstar is the leader). Secondly, he was mentored by Flamefall, which makes him a likely choice of successor. Also, he is eligible because he mentored Webwhisper. Finally, Bluestorm is still quite young and would be able to serve the Clan for many many moons, provided he doesn't have an accident or illness of some kind.

4. Ryewhistle. Firstly, Ryewhistle was mentored by Honeysong. This automatically makes her a contender because of the prophecy gang, but she is also Bluestorm's sister and therefore must have trained with Bluestorm and Flamefall as I said with Ashblink and Tallfoot. Secondly, Ryewhistle, like Bluestorm, also has a connection to Ravenstar through Sandsnap. Thirdly, Ryewhistle has the traits "ambitious", "prophecy seeker", and "good hunter", which are all excellent traits for a deputy. She also graduated early at 11 moons, which further proves her competence. Fourthly, Ryewhistle is eligible to be deputy because she mentored Fawnlight, who is also one of Ravenstar's kits, furthering the connection. Finally, Ryewhistle has had a good amount of time on-screen and is at a great point in her life to become deputy. She's not too old, but old enough to be experienced and trusted, and is mates with Batspring and Frozenfog.

5. Pearbranch or Greenberry. These two are together because they're littermates, and because we're starting to get to the point where it becomes tricky to rank who's more likely to be picked. Greenberry mentored Beaverfoot while Pearbranch mentored Bonestalk, so they're both eligible. This litter was the first to receive their warrior names from Wolfstar as well. I don't have too much to say about these two aside from that Pearbranch was one of the cats who was lost and likely gained knowledge and experience from that (and is known to be one of Beetle's favourites...), and that they're both qualified with strong traits and are a perfect age to become deputy.

Honourable mentions go to Graycloud, who mentored Swanspeck, and Clayshade, who is currently mentoring Hickorypaw. I don't have much to say about either of these two, but Graycloud is in a similar position to Pearbranch and Greenberry in that she's a good age and has good traits for the position. Clayshade is my wildcard pick. She's the youngest cat on my list by a good margin, and is only really included because she's eligible, has good traits, and had a scene with Flamefall at one point.

Wow that's way more writing than I thought...anyway, this is all just speculation and could be wildly wrong. I'm excited to hear what you think about my reasonings for my picks!

as much as i love Canarywish and it would be really fun thematically, she would Not want to be deputy, and probably wouldn't be chosen even if she did--she's going through a Very difficult time right now, not only adjusting to her return to the clan, but also adjusting to the loss of all of her immediate family, so she's got a bit too much going on to consider taking on a responsibility like that. also! i will say that ravenstar was very good to her!!! he loved her a lot and she did love him, even if she was a bit intimidated by him at times

ASHBLINK.... man if it wasn't for his age he would 100% be my choice. he's such a fun and often overlooked character, not only to write but also to draw, and it would be so fun thematically considering he was previously mates with Sleepydawn. unfortunately he's not that much younger than flamefall is

bluestorm!!! i wont lie to you he was definitely on my list, but i think there's a few reasons he wouldn't be picked. for one, i think that it's not Bad but also not necessarily In Good Taste to choose someone related to the leader to be deputy (let's all ignore Maplestar. that was all me i wont lie), and also he's perhaps a bit too irresponsible for the position, but Man. i really like him and i do think he'd be such a fun deputy. i do find it funny that you call him young though, he's 73. time flies

ryewhistle!!! she was on my list too, definitely top 5, if it weren't for her relation to wolfstar there's a good chance i would have picked her--but also i think Flamefall is looking for someone a bit younger to take his position, and someone a little less rambunctious. not to say she wouldn't make a good deputy, because I really think she would, but I think her personality would give Flamefall some second thoughts.

both Pearbranch and Greenberry were also really high on my list!!!! Pearbranch in particular, he was probably my second choice. The only reason I didn't go with him was his age (sixty moons now! by no means old, but again I do think Flamefall is looking for a younger cat), but I think in terms of personality, Wise is one of the best traits for a leader to have. Greenberry was a little lower on my list because I think she's more likely to prioritize her own needs over others, not that it's a bad thing

Graycloud and Clayshade too!! both fantastic choices... Graycloud I think wouldn't want to be deputy on account of Her Anxieties All The Time, but Clayshade would probably do rlly well as a deputy!

Jack refuses to let Robby do anything for himself. Gets him water and meds and makes the biggest pot of the soup that Robby's grandmother always made for him when he was sick as a kid so that when Jack has to be on shift, Robby will still have something fortifying to eat that he only has to put into the microwave. And Robby tries to get Jack to stop, to go back to sleep like he would be if Robby weren't sick, to not hover- but Jack absolutely refuses bc his Robby is sick and he needs to take care of him.

And of course, then Jack catches it from Robby bc despite the fact that he is a doctor and should know better, he didn't mask up and he's been in Robby's space to help him with cool compresses and taking his temperature and soft, soothing kisses when Robby feels particularly terrible and needs the physical comfort (I imagine Robby as a clingy patient and Jack is weak for those doe eyes).

So they are back and forth trying to do things to take care of each other, which really only prolongs the ordeal bc neither of them are getting proper rest that they need to recover.
