So now that we have all the pieces of Project Voltage art, which one is your favorite? They're all really good, but I'm partial to the Flygon one personally!

honestly if anything, tumblr needs to let in the addition of an oekaki feature to its heart already...it's an art focused website for the most part and it'd be so cute to have a little set up art canvas ready to go to draw with others and easily post from to make the place seem lively and enticing for artists again

Hi, just wanted to stop in and say your neocities site is SO FREAKIN CUTE OMIGOSH.
It's so cute and happy and welcoming and fun and!!! Takes me right back to the best of geocities. I can tell you've put a ton of work into it! I hope my page can be as great as yours eventually! I've got a lot to learn before that, but I'm excited!
Thank you for sharing neocities and your page!
GOD, what a sweet message!! Thank you so much…
Best of luck! There’s an effort to wrest back the fun and personality of the pre-social media internet and neocities.org is part of it! Its geocities-like charm is part of that. ^^ Here’s a search engine that only searches small sites, too! Marginalia Search.
And I just found an ACTUAL, FUNCTIONING OEKAKI IN THIS DAY AND AGE!!! With PaintBBS and Shi-Painter! And you don't need to sign up!!!

I just remembered how much fun I had on oekaki boards in the 2000's. Does anyone remember?
Here, take this angel Crowley done in PaintBBS. (I gave him his demon eyes, because they're pretty)

@andouilles worked very hard to set up an OEKAKI BOARD!!! heres the only piece I've been able to finish there without complications thus far. It's been fun taking myself down memory lane and making art in this thing for the first time in easily around 15 years.

Crafting my Clanceterpiece, pt. 2
We've upgraded from windows 95 to XP for several reasons, none of which I remember. Trillions of other variables also means I'm merely using these programs to build rough photoshop-bound foundations and not the entire pic - RSIs are something I will only risk for Naruto fanart.
With that out of the way, let's lose ourselves to Art Shop by Stepway...
Tumblr media
I love this. I would say 'more companies should set the tone for your software experience by saying shit like 'DO NOT FEAR!'' but I don't want that at all. They wouldn't be able to pull it off
Tumblr media
THIS IS NUTS... art software with 'shop' in the name make me trepidatious as all get out* but this rules, like it's incredibly hard to use but it RULES!!
*such as photoshop. you knew where this was headed
Tumblr media
There's only 5~ fonts but the first one is called Cowpoke so it doesn't matter. They could've just left it at Cowpoke and I'd be fine
Tumblr media
There's a notepad, and also a calculator, and I didn't click that clock button but it leads me to believe that there's also a function involving time in some way. idk if anyone was demanding calculators in art software back in the day but I like that it's there
Tumblr media
The whole thing has a genuinely lovely interface - especially the loading message that says 'this may take a while.' I couldn't get a screenshot because it loaded too fast. I love that it says HELP! everywhere
Lastly, it has animated screensavers. They can be set to appear instantaneously, very courteous of them to do that in anticipation of my quest when they made this software thirty billion years ago.

The fruits of whatever:

Honestly I could've stopped here but I decided on a traditional 2005~ approach some circles might describe as 'Sloppy Oekaki' (a circle can be one person.) Basically you take a 1px brush and scribble until the cacophonous horrors are drowned out, or at least dampened.
I had a good time, I hope you did too, here's a souvenir:

Joanna ‘jojo’
Jojo was originally created when all my friends were making Harry Potter fan OCs on the oekaki board I went to every day(circa 2003…?). I just wanted to draw our OCs together. I ended up not drawing her very much because I don’t know anything about Harry Potter.
I had a new story come to me in the past few years and I have decided to repurpose Jojo as the main protagonist of this story. The story centers around Jojo discovering a witch at a market selling spices. The witch senses natural magic within Jojo and decides to take her on as an apprentice of otherworldly spells and local folk magic. The witch shows Jojo ancient places where magic still lives deep in the Appalachian mountains. The witch shows Jojo how her market booth is multi-dimensional and after the day market is done in jojo’s world, they open shop for the magic night market. She meets monsters, spirits, and people from other dimensions.
Jojo’s current form is aged 10-13. Previously I have drawn her as an older teen, but in the spice witch story she is definitely a young child.
There is a real life person I know who I call the spice witch. I don’t know if she’s cool with that, but she sells spices and it inspired this story.

Hi, How did you learn to draw/ paint? Have you been doing it for long? What sort of resources did you use? Apologies if this is too personal - Thank you for all of your work.
hey skaermf!
well: i:m turning 33 this year, so although i:m not super old i have a decent amount of "just ambiently trying to make art" experience from trying to do it off/on at various points in my life -- and i think that:s how most people are: from a young age (impersonal) you:re doodling and drawing; i don:t think i ever really made a conscious effort to improve or study till highschool, though, cause i really wanted to be better than my class,
--for that, i was in the /ic/ grindset for awhile and tried out their loomis stuff but couldn:t really make sense of measurements, or proportion, or "the idea of an object in space," (& i still struggle with all of this) so i gave up immediately and instead just took movie-stills and color-picked them in mspaint to recreate them as exactly as possible. miserable exercise, but it actually gave me a good crash-course in how to "see color" cause it taught me that skin often would be green or blue or purple or muddy whereas previous i:d just see it as "peachy tan skin color"; then i:d move on-to sketching out movie stills in oekaki bbs (over on /i/) and taking several hours (usually around 8) to recreate the scene as exact as i could manage by eye <- lots of really lifeless photorealistic color studies, basically; then i:d try to do charcoal studies of about the same stuff, copying old nudes and studies of other better artists;
and that was about it! i stopped really trying after highschool and worked on comix-esque projects imitating edgy pre-90s comix stuff usually from american and japanese artists (like copying nekojiru! monster man bureiko was a favorite though, mutant hanako too); but for the most part i stopped caring about improving or studying art, and really that attitude hasn:t much left me and why my art is (at best, i think) a very honed amateurish effort -- makes me think of the overgrown sperm;
but yeah, then just doing; early in twitter career i had my little oc (my avatar here) that i made daily drawings of; before that, i would try to draw the characters of all my DND friends back when i played; i did some youtube thumbnail commission work for a league player; and now: i mostly just try to do fanart of things i like and lots of drawings of my hands using my vertebrae method.
basically: i:m a horrible person to learn art from! i don:t put in the work to improve in the ways i:d like and really, art is like fighting-games in-that the best results come from doing a lot of rote practice-mode work that isn:t fun and often goes against your desire to do the more modes.
one thing, though, is i also think studying art history and classical painters and various movements is super useful for learning art, cause art is a language like any other, and it does you well to expand the breadth of your language, and to be able to quote poetry when needed.
take care, and remember: i still need advice on buying 40k kill team.

Oekakidog newsletter? :D
Hi! This is mod Cy here, this blog has gotten immensely popular in ways I could have never imagined! It's really cool to see so many people who are interested in this lesser known era of sparkledog art and we're all glad to share this with you. With this in mind, we wanted to communicate a few things to our followers:
This blog does not endorse the people we feature here, nor do we excuse their behavior. We are well aware of VanillaKitsune/Vani's history of scamming and manipulative behavior and we do not want to seem like we are endorsing them and their continued behavior.
In fact, we would like to bring awareness to Vani, who now goes by London/luxebytes, that they are still the same scammer as they've always been and to beware. However, their art is important for understanding the beginning and evolution of oekakidog art, so we will continue to feature their work here. Again, this is not an endorsement, and we ask of you to look at our various links about their scamming behavior and avoid supporting them.
It's a little late to announce this, but both of us are on Art Fight as CytricAcid and Willobark! We also want to draw attention to the tag "oekakidog" to be used on both toyhouse and art fight to identify sparkledogs who are inspired by the oekaki era of sparkledogs.
In the future, we hope to develop a "guide" of sorts of the types of traits popular in oekaki dogs, as well as accepting "neooekakidog art" inspired by them.
Lastly, please do not bother artists we post here to buy their OCs. It's rude to ask people to buy their OCs unprompted and we've been starting to see trends of people bothering old sparkledog artists for their old characters. While some of us do not connect with our old characters as much as we did 10-20 years ago, many of us still hold our childhood OCs with nostalgic regard. Please respect the artists we post and do not harass them about their old characters.
And once more, we do take submissions if you have art from this era! If they are on an extant art site, please just submit your page on that website; otherwise, we ask you send us an ask first before submitting your own artwork in our currently existing format and linking to your preferred social. Thank you, and have fun!

On 19th of December I finished therapy. It took me and my therapist six years to sort through my borderline ass, but we finally came to an end, altough not an end to my self-improvement as a whole, obviously. If I include previous therapists, I started over ten years ago when I landed in a psych ward, so it's been a long road, but every bit as worth it as it could be. I gave my therapist, which I thank greatly, a copy of Oekaki Zine, which contained an old portrait of Marout and Mara from 2014 along with this little drawing, which (as she said) in comparison shows my maturation and peace within. I still have to take meds, but I'm beginning a new chapter of my life. I will forever be grateful for the Care, Love and Attention that I received during these past six years. Thank you.
Drawn on 18-19.12.23.
The old artwork from back when I used to draw with a mouse to hide my low self esteem (lol):

Kasumi? Archaic? I'm just curious who's running this blog. ;; I miss Bulbakaki and oekaki in general. Those were good times. I hope whoever is running this blog is doing well!
Hello! Kasumi here! Lisia runs this blog nowadays, but they're taking a little break so I'm taking over for a few days. I miss the Bulbakaki days too! Unfortunately, the oekaki software had some security issues and it was impossible to host it safely.
I'll poke Archaic and the tech about it so they can look into it again, hoping we can bring it back. No promises that it will happen, but I can at least try!
Thank you so much for keeping in touch and I hope you're doing great too!

What is the sandwich meme. Oh god is there something in the sandwich? Wonderbread?
Oh, gawd, no. It's nothing crude or bad like that. It's just an Oekaki board scenery painting from 2007 by Cbee, with Krystal doodled in the corner eating a sandwich, because Kemonoart and other Oekaki boards of the type have an unspoken 'must contain furry' rule... Just a little humour there. It started as a joke like that, ha.
But it was just such a funny drawing, that it became a 'thing', and people were making parodies of it all over FurAffinity, and other sites like WikiFur. If I remember correctly, and do take this with a grain of salt - FA started taking them down, both as it was using another users' art (with permission), and also counted as spam.
Thanks, Cbee. And thank you for giving me permission to slap this in here;

Glorious.
