Using SAMR to Help Integrate Tech in your PBL Classroom
PBL and technology become interconnected through the implementation of SAMR. SAMR is a tool teachers can use to help design lessons that target higher order thinking. SAMR stands for Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, and Redefinition. In Substitution, the teacher simply replaces paper documents with digital copies that the students can access. As we begin to work our way up the framework, Augmentation calls for the use of technology that helps a student improve what they would be doing, but does not change the lesson in and of itself. This may just be the implementation of using Google Docs, with its spell and grammar check, instead of writing an essay or theme on paper. Modification takes it a step further as it calls for the use of technology to change the task at hand. Students may now be asked to share their docs with other students and provide feedback to each other. The final step of SAMR is Redefinition. In this step the lesson is redefined and tasks that were previously inconceivable are now possible. Perhaps instead of writing an essay on paper or in Google Docs, a teacher has students work in groups and utilize Adobe Spark to create a website with the information they gathered as well as pictures and other applicable media.
When implementing PBL in our classrooms we look not just to enhance learning, but to transform learning through higher order thinking. We begin asking students to not only learn something, but to analyze it and evaluate their own thoughts on the concept. Students collaborate and create a final product to show what they have learned. The culmination of this process is to communicate that learning not just to the teacher, but to their community as a whole. Technology enables us to do this in ways we never could before.
We can implement SAMR without technology, as we see in the article Essential connections of stem, PBL, and Tech Integration... what would Dewey think?. In this article Micheal Gorman discusses using cameras, compasses, and scientific recording equipment with his students studying outdoor environments in the 1970’s. Even books are a form of technology. Our 21st Century technology brings all those tools together, and offers even more possibilities. Student’s iPads not only allow access to the written word, but also include cameras, compasses, measurement tools, and connects them with experts and each other, all at the touch of a button.
Through PBL and the implementation of technology in the classroom teacher are more capable than ever of targeting higher order thinking with their students.

Ed Issues: AI Sneaking into the Classroom
Tom Merritt, tech journalist at DTS (and friends) discussed a Wall Street Journal article about AI tools being used by teachers to cutdown on time spent grading student papers and essays. Having retired from the classroom just as my colleagues were scrambling to deal with students employing chatbots to create their papers, my mind immediately bounced to a viral video that popped up some time ago…

From tumblrposting it may appear that I spend all my time thinking about fictional characters. However that takes up only about 10% of my time. I have wide and varied interests. Including birding. And figuring out how to lean FIRE.

Project Based Learning
It is what we do as art teachers, here's why it is so important!
There are so many hurdles for teachers and students in today's classroom. Excessive student absenteeism, low test scores, and student equity can all be improved through the implementation of Project Based Learning (PBL). When students count on EACH OTHER for advice and feedback, they show up. From 1997 to 2000 the percentage of fifth graders passing the VA Standards of Learning test increased in all areas due to the implementation of PBL. PBL has also helped narrow the gap in test scores between African American and white students. (Curtis, 2001).
Implementing PBL in a classroom can be challenging. The role of teacher changes from classroom leader and lector to classroom guide and facilitator. Students take ownership of their educational pursuits. As students take ownership they also begin to build 21st Century skills. Skills like personal and social responsibility, planning, critical thinking, reasoning, creativity, communication skills, understanding of others, and the ability to visualize and make decisions to foster their goals. (Person, 2007).
According to the Buck Institute for Education Gold Standard for Project Based Learning there are seven essential design elements teachers can consider. 1. What is the problem or question? What standards are you trying to teach the students? 2. PBL calls for your students to engage in a sustained period of inquiry that reaches beyond the classroom walls. Researching and compiling data in a variety of ways, over a period of time as they begin the journey toward concept attainment. Students may create collaborative documents online. Teachers may take students on field trips, to museums, or planetariums in addition to working in the classroom, as you will see in the PBL examples to follow. This is in opposition to the traditional memorization and regurgitation of facts. What the students are looking to achieve (the problem or question) should be meaningful to them, or have 3. authenticity. In one example below you will see students longing to understand their classmate, who struggles with Cystic Fibrosis. In another example we see a group of students interested in the WWE begin to take interest in the stock market once they found out it was a publicly traded company. Authenticity shows the students that this is something that is important to them both in and OUTSIDE of school. We will see many example of students meeting with professionals throughout the PBL process, seeing how what they are learning IS applicable in the real world. For successful PBL students must have a voice and choice in their pursuit of this problem or question. Having a voice is the first step to promoting 4. ownership. It is this ownership of ideas that drive student attendance. They feel needed and heard, and when they do, they show up. Just like as adults we show up for our job, in PBL students may choose to begin a business, and for that, they will show up. Setting aside time for 5. reflection throughout the project is critical. Just like educators, students must 6. critique and revise their plan as they learn and grow. This is a great time for students to have the opportunity to meet with experts. We will see students in the following exemplars meeting with architects and scientists. (Armstrong, 2002) This is what leads to true and thorough understanding. And finally, when designing PBL students should be creating a 7. public product. Sharing something that, again, shows the community the concept they mastered is not just something they need to learn for school, but something that can be applied to the real world to make it a better place for all. (2023) Whether students are organizing a Math Challenge or Walk-a-thon, starting their own business, or collaborating with students from around the globe, PBL reaches beyond our classrooms. (Curtis, 2001)
In the videos below you will see examples of PBL. While each project meets most of the seven essential project design elements of the "Gold Standard" (2023) as discussed previously, you will see that the most challenging design elements are things that require a lot of work from the teacher. Educators will need to adjust to planning in a way they are not accustomed to. Setting aside time to critique and revise the project can be challenging, but it is just as important as defining the question or challenge. It often means allotting more time to a project than originally planned. Be flexible. PBL is worth it.

youtube
As you see in the video not all of the examples are reaching beyond the classroom in their production. It will be a challenge for educators, figuring what to create as a public project. Fortunately, we live in a time where 1:1 technology is readily available to almost all of our students. Technology is the bridge that offers us multiple ways to assess our students, as well as multiple avenues for sharing their ideas and creations with the public. Students working learning about the monarch migration were able to collaborate with over 6000 students across the globe to create a digital map of the butterflies journey. (Curtis, 2002)
Open student discussion will inevitably form the rest of the seven essential design elements. With frequent meetings and communication you will see that students are more than capable of being leaders in their own education.
Project Based Learning is the way of the future. It will entice our students to not only show up to school, but become active facilitators of their own learning. Learning will begin to reach beyond the classroom. And, while the role of teachers may be changing it becomes ever more important. We are their guide not only within our isolated classrooms, but their guide as they explore our world.

I met 5 out of the 6 students on my Kindergarten self contained autistic support class and I gotta say I think I legitimately have been blessed with the best, sweetest, and MOSE ENTHUSIASTIC class ever!
#unusual thing to say on tumblr ik but im actually so unbelievably excited#only behavior I witnessed is a kid taking my letter cards out of a pocket chart to say the sounds which is freaking ideal lol#I may be overly optimistic but I may be able to push all of them into their typical Kindergarten classrooms full time by January#and nobody is giving red flags for any aggression? OR property destruction?#I got beat up and had my room torn apart nearly every day last year this may actually be too good to be true#AND they all have nice responsive fun knowledgeable and supportive families?!?!?!#three of them have a behavior tech to support them through their parents health insurance?!?!#and I only have Kinder so I don’t have to work around multiple grade level schedules and multiple curriculums#I had to plan completely different lessons for my Kindergartners and first graders for both reading and math last year#so I literally only have to do half of the planning I did last year#and I have two brilliant paraprofessionals who I know and like and who also like me#this is actually a dream come true#we’re going to make so much progress while having more fun than anyone else in the entire school#the kids were already getting along so well at the open house#this is my 5th year teaching and the first time I actually feel ready and excited for the first day

#tbh its a really small assessment its food tech and not even for the hsc. however i feel passionate about data collection#and while the survey only requires 20+ respondents for an A if i were to only ask irls that would be a very small data sample#i went on a small tangent on the unreliability of the stanford prison experiment results due to sample bias however i was in food tech thus#not around people who appreciate that kind of thing 😔 love them but i was craving the history classroom in that moment#god ive been loving history class so much we've had really good discussions#the lessons (only five per fornight </3) are making me very excited for all the hsie subjects im doing next year#oscar.exe

Working as a school psychologist is interesting, and even more so when you are also an experienced childcare specialist.
But it is even more so when you work in a school specialized in educating the new generation of elementary and preschool teachers.
Most of the time, students come to me to ask about how to take care of "that child who just seems to not get it" on theyr intership, how to deal with parents, and how to accuse their teachers of school misconduct
Then there is the clasic one that is here because the parents are teachers too and do not want to work with childrens.
And the ones that realy needs my help on psycology isues.
So far my work had been this:
5% actualy psicology problems that i can work on/ students on a emotional crisis.
5% problems that need legal and more heavy healcare specialists (those oh how i cry at nights)
40% help idk what im doing in this scholl! this is not my choice carrier!
40% how do i deal with a kid with sepcial nesesitis and/or the parents. Is this adecuate for my intership? WHAT DO I DO WHEN IM SUPOST TO TEACH A KID ON THE INTERCHIP! THEY DO NOT CARE ABOUT ME! QWQ
5% romantig things that i am so ace to be dealing with but that they think i am the only reasonably and somehow a miracle worker.
5% how do i tell my teacher to go to hell?
