JEAN CALVIN, PASTEUR À STRASBOURG

Durant son séjour à Strasbourg, Calvin ne reste pas attaché à une église particulière mais dirige successivement l'église Saint-Nicolas, l'église Sainte-Madeleine et l'ancienne église dominicaine renommée Temple Neuf (ces églises existent toujours, mais toutes ont été transformées). Calvin accueille généralement entre 400 et 500 personnes au culte. Il enseigne chaque jour, et prêche deux sermons le dimanche. La communion est célébrée chaque mois et le chant des psaumes est encouragé. Il travaille également à la seconde édition de ses Institutions, étant notamment mécontent de la structure en forme de catéchisme de la première version.

Pour la seconde édition, publiée en 1539, Calvin abandonne cette forme en faveur d'une présentation systématique des principales doctrines bibliques. Le livre passe ainsi de six à dix-sept chapitres. Il rédige parallèlement un autre livre, les Commentaires de l'épître aux Romains, qui est publié en mars 1540. L'ouvrage sert de modèle pour ses futurs commentaires : il y inclut sa propre traduction latine du grec, plutôt que de reprendre la Vulgate, une exégèse et une prédication expositoire. Dans son introduction, Calvin loue le travail de ses prédécesseurs Philippe Mélanchthon, Heinrich Bullinger et Martin Bucer mais s'en démarque et critique certaines de leurs positions.

Durant son séjour à Strasbourg, Calvin souscrit également à la Concorde de Wittemberg, en vigueur à Strasbourg depuis 1536, et est chargé de défendre la Confession d'Augsbourg lors du colloque de Ratisbonne en 1540.

Les amis de Calvin le pressant de se marier, ce dernier écrit à l'un de ses correspondants :

« Moi, qui ai l'air si hostile au célibat, je ne suis pas encore marié et j'ignore si jamais je le serai. Si je prends femme, ce sera pour que, mieux affranchi de nombreuses tracasseries, je puisse me consacrer au Seigneur. »

Plusieurs jeunes femmes lui sont cependant présentées, dont l'une issue d'une famille noble. Calvin accepterait à contre-cœur ce mariage, à condition que la fiancée apprenne le français. Toutefois, la cérémonie, prévue pour mars 1540, n'a jamais eu lieu. Il écrit plus tard qu'il n'a d'ailleurs jamais pensé à épouser cette jeune fille, « à moins que le Seigneur ne m'ait privé de ma présence d'esprit ». Finalement, il épouse en août 1540 Idelette de Bure, veuve d'un anabaptiste converti par lui, ayant deux enfants de son premier mariage. Le couple a un fils, Jacques, mort jeune.

Genève, à la longue, regrette l'expulsion de Calvin, car le climat politique a changé et l'on constate que la fréquentation des cultes diminue. L'alliance entre Berne et Genève vacille en raison de querelles territoriales. Lorsque le cardinal Jacopo Sadoleto écrit au Conseil municipal, invitant Genève à rentrer dans le giron catholique, le Conseil cherche une autorité ecclésiastique pour lui répondre. Pierre Viret est consulté, mais refuse ; le Conseil s'adresse alors à Calvin. Sa Responsio ad Sadoletum (Réponse à Sadoleto) défend fermement la réforme protestante à Genève. Le 21 septembre, le Conseil charge l'un de ses membres, Ami Perrin, de solliciter le retour de Calvin. Un émissaire rencontre le réformateur à Worms, lors d'une conférence destinée à résoudre des disputes religieuses. Sa première réaction est négative, puisqu'il écrit « je préférerais mourir cent fois que de retourner à cette croix sur laquelle je périssais mille fois chaque jour ».

Après réflexion, cependant, Calvin se déclare néanmoins prêt à suivre l'appel du Seigneur. Il est prévu que Viret prendra temporairement en charge Genève, tandis que Bucer et Calvin visiteront la ville pour organiser les étapes suivantes. Le Conseil municipal insiste toutefois sur la nomination immédiate de Calvin. À l'été 1541, Strasbourg délègue donc Calvin pour six mois à la ville de Genève ; ce dernier et sa famille prennent la route le 13 septembre en direction du Léman, accompagnés d'une escorte officielle.

Cine: Kaboom (2010)

Ésta es una de esas películas en las que lo real y lo alucinatorio se confunden de tal manera que resulta prácticamente imposible para el espectador saber cuál es cuál. Todo el relato, pergeñado por Greg Arakki ("Mysterious Skin"), deambula entre la comedia, el erotismo, el misterio y e incluso el terror. Su protagonista, Smith (Thomas Dekker), acostumbra tener sueños que involucran a su madre (Kelly Lynch), a su mejor amiga Stella (Haley Bennett) y a tres extrañas chicas, a las que no había conocido antes. Éstas aparecen más tarde: una como pareja de Stella (Lorelei, interpretada por Roxane Mesquida), otra acaba vomitándole en una fiesta (London, en la piel de Juno Temple) y la última como una tal Madeleine (Nicole LaLiberte), de quien sabe poco o nada a pesar de que se le aparece constantemente. Justamente, Madeleine es la protagonista de otro sueño en la que es asesinada por hombres con máscaras de animales.

Smith no termina de admitirse como gay: tiene sus encuentros con chicas, pero le apetece bastante Thor (Chris Zylka), su compañero de cuarto con buen cuerpo y pocas luces, el amigo de éste, Rex (Andy Fischer-Price). Folla con Hunter (Jason Olive), a quien conoce en una playa nudista y hasta se conecta con un tal Oliver (Brennan Mejia). Vida sexualmente productiva para un universitario de dieciocho años. Lamentablemente, la angustia lo llevará por constantes caminos de tensión y desquicio hacia un destino aún más inesperado.

Lettre à Madeleine

Ma chère Madeleine, 

Quel dommage que tu aies ce vilain rhume qui t'empêche de m'accompagner à l'Exposition Coloniale... J'espère que tu auras une autre occasion d'y venir, peut-être avec André.

Ici, c'est fabuleux, fabuleux ! Je te fais grâce de l'esprit propagandiste du lieu, je me contente d'en prendre plein les yeux sans aucune autre pensée. L'affiche indiquait "Le tour du monde en un jour", c'est vraiment l'impression que j'en ai! Ici, le Maroc et ses bassins , là l'Indochine et... oui, tu lis bien, la reconstitutions de temples d'Angkor (c'est le clou de cette expo !!! beaucoup de monde s'y presse, impressionné), là c'est la mosquée de Djenné au Mali, et puis me voici devant un temple de Java; je suis tour à tour en Afrique, en Océanie, en Asie... et soudain devant la maison de George Washington au Mount Vernon ! Je côtoie les éléphants, les dromadaires, les hippopotames peints sur les fresques du Palais de la Porte Dorée, le tout dans une végétation luxuriante. 

Ah je suis fatiguée à force de marcher, je m'assois à l'ombre d'un palmier face à des bâtiments blancs (sans doute en béton armé, ce nouveau matériau) aux architectures ultramodernes, aux lignes épurées et je continue ma lettre. Je ne peux attendre mon retour à l'hôtel pour t'écrire, j'ai trop de choses à te raconter. Le Palais de la Porte Dorée est une merveille d'architecture de l'Art Déco ! Les plus grands noms du fleuron français y ont fait exploser leur art, qu'ils soient architectes, peintres, décorateurs : Laprade, Janniot, Ruhlmann, Sudes, Printz, Bouquet, Duclos de la Haille ; ils ont utilisé les bois les plus précieux  : palmier, ébène de macassar, bois de citronnier, bois de Patawa, sycomore, palissandre. Ce serait bien dommage qu'une si belle œuvre qui a pris cinq ans de travaux disparaisse une fois  l'exposition terminée, car c'est véritablement une œuvre d'art !

J'ai entendu dire que les surréalistes ont organisé une contre-exposition pour s'élever contre la colonisation. Je te l'ai dit, je ne m'intéresse pas à l'esprit propagandiste mais pour moi c'est une ouverture sur le monde qui est offerte à tous ceux qui ne peuvent voyager au-delà des frontières françaises. C'est une véritable leçon de géographie et si cette exposition n'éveille pas des vocations de colons, elle peut déclencher des vocations de géographes ! 

Voilà, ma chère Madeleine, mes impressions. Quel dommage que tu ne sois pas là !

Paris Art History May Term: Final Exam Reflection

Temple of Sibyl (19e)

As our first stop on our scavenger hunt final, this beautiful park and monument was a great way to start! At first glance, we were all stunned by the beauty of the temple sitting atop its rocky outlook. Upon further inspection, we discussed questions such as whether or not the rock formations were natural, and when the monument was made. After doing some research I was able to find out that the rock formations it sits on are actually man-made, and that the temple itself was designed and completed by the architect Gabriel Davioud in the late 19th century. Witnessing it today we were able to observe Parisians engaging in a multitude of Saturday leisure activities from walking their adorable dogs to exercising along the water’s edge. Even though the two walking bridges to access the island were closed, this was an amazing stop to relax and take in the nature-filled space that seemingly transports you away from the hustle and bustle of the city. 

Passerelle Richerand pedestrian bridge (10e)

When walking up to this cast iron walking bridge, we noted the beauty of the view of the canal from the top. Now decorated with an assortment of what could be argued as graffiti or street art, this bridge stands as a reminder of the canal itself. Build in the early 19th century by Napoleon I, this canal was one of the first planned waterways to bring drinking water to the city of Paris. Now still connected to the seine river through ports, this calm river is a popular spot for a shady river walk or view of the neighborhood. 

The foundation of the Bastille in the Bastille Metro Station (11e)

Upon stopping at the Bastille Metro Station, we found ourselves face-to-face with a moment of preserved history! History is not something I have found myself expecting to find when scanning my Navi-go and entering the Paris metro station, but this example of a memorable historic site changed my expectations entirely. Discovered during the expansion of line 5 on December 17th, 1906. As we saw in the Bastille station on line 5, it has since been marked off and preserved within the new Metro addition. Marked not only by its historic stone appearance and protective glass covering, the city of Paris has added plaques and information signs to help inform anyone from the daily passerby or visiting tourists of its history and importance. Having learned about the extensive, and at some points, destructive history of the Bastille, we all found it amazing to witness the original foundation and wonder about its distance below modern-day ground.

La Madeleine (8e)

Travelling to the 8th Arrondissement, we stopped at the Église de la Madeleine, or, La Madeleine. With construction beginning under King Louis XV, La Madeleine bears the traditional features of a Greek temple, like a frieze and a columned entrance, distinguishing itself from the surrounding Haussmann buildings. With 52 Corinthian-style columns lining the building and the frieze depicting the Last Judgement, overlooking the city, the Madeleine is best known for its sheer size and unique, neoclassical style. Today, the Madeleine still serves as a Catholic parish church, as was orignially intended, and is the focal point of Rue Royal; however, due to construction, we were unable to get a full view of the front of the building. Currently, scaffolding covers large swaths of the columns, and the stairs are largely blocked off to pedestrians. Because of this construction, we unfortunately could not take in the full splendor of the Madeleine, but we were still able to enjoy the frieze and the columned side view of the building, and note how the art and architecture periods we have studied parallel each other.

Century-old rats in the window of Julien Aurouze and Co. (1er)

Julien Aurouze and Co. showcases a surprising collection in its storefront windows… From a distance, the shop appears charming with its painted green exterior. Yet, upon closer inspection, our group discovered the macabre sight of rat carcasses hanging inside. Although we found it disturbing, we were captivated by the remarkable preservation of these bodies spanning a hundred years. Upon research into the history of Julien Aurouze and Co., we found that it has served as a pest control shop since the 19th century (Mishmash, 2016) Fun fact: it has even been included in the Pixar movie ratatouille! While it wouldn’t be #1 on our list of places to visit in Paris, it was quite an interesting site to see.

Street sign on rue Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1er)

In the first arrondissement is the rather unassuming street “Jean-Jacques Rousseau.” The street was named after the philosopher, writer, and musician Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712-1778). Rousseau lived on this street during the height of the enlightenment who believed that human beings are inherently good and only become bad when corrupted by society. Therefore, he believed that society should function based on the general will of the people and thus led to Rousseau being one of the first to argue for the sovereignty of the people. Rousseau’s philosophy was instrumental in the development of ideas that would culminate in the 1789 revolution and continue to influence French politics to the present day. The apartment where Rousseau lived with his wife still stands on Rue Jean-Jaques Rousseau and serves as a reminder to the ideas that freed the French from the monarchy and allowed them to develop a government that supports its people above all else.

Grave of Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvior in Montparnasse Cemetery (6e)

In the Montparnasse Cemetery lies the grave of Simone de Beauvoir and her life partner Jean-Paul Sarte. Simone de Beauvoir was a French existentialist philosopher and writer who was instrumental in the early feminist movement in France. Her partner Jean-Paul Sartre was also a philosopher and the pair both read and influenced each other's works. Beauvoir and Sartre never married or had children but remained life-partners until his death in 1950. Sarte’s existentialist philosophy helped shape both academic and public thought during the 1900’s and 50,000 people visited his grave after his death. Simone de Beauvoir’s work was fundamental in the progression of feminist thought. Both Beauvoir and Sartre influenced philosophical thought both throughout France and in the rest of the world.

The ruins of the Roman baths at the Musée de Cluny (5e)

In the 5th Arrondissement of Paris, large Roman ruins seem out of place, yet, the Haussmann buildings and tall trees surround the expansive remains of a Roman bathouse. Now a part of the Musee de Cluny, these first or second century ruins span 6000 square meters and are what is left of an ancient frigidarium, the cold room of a bathouse. With tall ceilings visible from the street, but the “ground level” now being underground, these ruins are a unique Parisian landmark. As some of us had all already visited the Musee de Cluny earlier this week, we appreciated the opportunity to view the ruins from the exterior, something we did not do upon our first visit. We noted how, from the street, the ruins do not look as expansive as they are from the inside, and remarked how different and unassuming the exterior looks. On the street surrounding the Cluny, a market was bustling. Booths lined the sidewalks, selling normal market goods in a spread out setting; we wanted to stop at a macaron booth that we stopped at on our first visit to the Cluny, but had to rush to our next location.

The exterior facade of St-Étienne-duMont church (5e)

As we approached St-Étienne-du-Mont church, our group was greeted with a delightful surprise – the captivating beauty of the cathedral. Positioned in the heart of Place Sainte-Geneviève, it exudes an imposing grandeur that dominates the surrounding area. Numerous individuals were scattered about, amidst the presence of rectangular stones placed around the vicinity. The architectural design seamlessly blends gothic and renaissance influences, featuring a stunning gothic rose window and flying buttresses. Although we regretted not having the opportunity to explore its interior, the sheer loveliness of the exterior was a sight to behold.

Aujourd’hui, j’ai plutôt tourné mes pas vers l’ouest de Paris (8e arrondissement) et vers l’église de la Madeleine. C’est une église complètement à part dans le paysage architectural de Paris, puisqu’elle investit un temple grec conçu par Napoléon à la gloire de ses armées; elle ne devient une église qu’en 1845. En ce moment, la façade est en travaux (et donc j’ai utilisé une photo libre de droits trouvée sur Internet pour montrer l’aspect général). La relative sobriété des colonnes cannelées blanches à l’extérieur contraste complètement avec le luxe des marbres, des dorures, des boiseries et des sculptures de l’intérieur. A titre personnel, je suis assez sensible à ses trois coupoles sur pendentifs, percées d’oculus, qui éclairent la nef. Le maître-autel, représentant le ravissement de Marie-Madeleine, m’a également beaucoup impressionnée malgré son académisme, et je suis contente que l’autel Vatican II installé a posteriori soit suffisamment discret pour en laisser apprécier la monumentalité.

L’église de la Madeleine est par ailleurs célèbre pour les concerts qu’elle abrite très régulièrement, et pour les obsèques de musiciens et chanteurs qui s’y sont déroulées.

Seven people for seven comfort movies

Merci @antonomase. Comme toi, je n’ai pas vraiment de “comfort movie”. Les films tristes ont un effet plus cathartique sur moi.

 J’ai vu beaucoup de films, mais ceux qui ont le plus d’impact sur moi sont toujours les films d’animation. Ne vous étonnez pas de la liste :

Astérix et la surprise de césar

Mon Astérix préféré étant petite. J’adorais la scène dans laquelle l’eau monte dans les canaux et qu’Obélix cherche Astérix.

Tintin et le temple du soleil

Mon Tintin préféré : je n’aimais pas autant la série. Je trouvais que ce film avait une intensité particulière et j’adorais les chansons.

Souvenirs de Marnie

Je pleure comme une madeleine à chaque fois. Ce film me touche très personnellement. 

Lou et l’île aux sirènes

Une réécriture moderne de la petite sirène par un grand réalisateur méconnu de l’animation japonaise : c’est très mignon et graphiquement magnifique.

Ponyo sur la falaise

Autre réécriture de la petite sirène, par Miyazaki cette fois. J’adore l’eau. J’adore l’animation de l’eau. Je regarde ce film avec des étoiles plein les yeux. 

Blanche Neige, les souliers rouges et les sept nains 

Je l’ai vu en anglais hier. Un gros coup de coeur. Le message est bien traité, surtout quand on connait la société coréenne et l’importance qu’on accorde aux apparences là-bas. Et puis, Blanche Neige est très attachante.

Miss Potter

Un biopic sur Béatrix Potter, autrice de mon enfance. J’adore les films sur les femmes artistes de manière générale.

PASTEL DE ZANAHORIA/ CARROT CAKE

Si el otro día nos despedíamos del calor con un picnic veraniego con nuestras Madeleines con cobertura de chocolate negro y pistachos, hoy le damos la bienvenida al otoño con la primera de las recetas de la temporada otoñal. Os traemos una sencilla, deliciosa y permitidnos decirlo, bastante pintona, pastel de zanahoria. Esta está decorada con nueces y zanahorias de gel, pero os aconsejamos que vosotros os dejéis llevar por vuestra creatividad de reposteros. ¡El resultado sorprende hasta a uno mismo!

Bizcocho

1 ¼ tazas harina normal

1 ¼ taza azúcar moreno

3/4 taza aceite vegetal

2  ½ tazas zanahoria rallada

3 huevos L

2 Cdtas levadura

1 1/2 Cdtas canela

1/4 Cdta nuez moscada

½ Cdta sal

1 taza pasas

1 taza de nueces y pistachos triturados

Icing

100 g de mantequilla sin sal

150 g de queso crema (fría)

175 g de azúcar glass

½ cdta esencia de vainilla

Decoración

1 taza de nueces y pistachos triturados

Gel de color naranja y verde

Preparación:

Precalienta el horno a 350F/175C. Unta y enharina el molde.

En un bol mediano mezcla la harina, el bicarbonato de sodio, la canela, la nuez moscada y la sal. Reserva.

En un bol grande, mezcla el azúcar y el aceite. Agrega los huevos de uno en uno y bate hasta que los huevos se aclaren y la mezcla esté bien mezclada.

Añade los ingredientes secos poco a poco hasta que todo esté bien integrado en la mezcla.

Incorpora las zanahorias, nueces y pasas y mezcla bien.

Vierte la masa en el molde y hornea durante 35-40 minutos o hasta que al insertar un palillo en el centro del pastel salga limpio.

Deja que el pastel se temple y luego llévalo a una rejilla para que termine de enfriarse antes de cortarlo.

Para el glaseado, bate la mantequilla con una batidora de mano eléctrica primero a velocidad baja y luego a alta hasta que la mantequilla duplique su tamaño. Agrega el azúcar glass y la esencia de vainilla y repite el mismo proceso. Después haz lo mismo con el queso crema.

Monta las capas de bizcocho con el relleno. Cuando esté listo, cubre todo con el frosting y agrega las nueces picadas a los lados. Refrigera durante 30 minutos.

Con una manga pastelera, decora la parte superior del bizcocho y haz unas zanahorias con los geles de colores.

Ingredients:

Cake

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1 ¼ cups brown sugar

1 ¼ cups vegetable oil

2  ½ cups shredded carrots

3 eggs

2 tsps baking soda

1 ½ tsp ground cinnamon

1/4 tsp ground nutmeg

½ tsp salt

1 cup raisins

1 cup chopped walnuts and pistachios

Icing

100 g unsalted butter

150 g cream cheese (refrigerated)

175 g icing sugar

½ tsp vanilla extract

Decoration

1 cup chopped walnuts and pistachios

Orange and green color gels

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350F/175C. Butter and flour the baking pan.

In a medium bowl whisk together the shifted flour, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Set aside

In a big bowl, whisk together the sugar and oil. Add eggs, one at a time, fully incorporating each before adding the next. Whisk until the eggs lighten in color and the mixture is thoroughly blended.

Add the dry ingredients little by little until everything is well combined into the mixture.

Add the carrots, nuts, and raisins and mix well.

Pour the batter into the prepared pan. Bake for 35-40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center of the cake comes out clean.

Let the cake cool and then transfer to a cooling rack before leveling it.

For the frosting beat the butter with an electric hand mixer at low speed first and then at high until the butter has doubled in size. Add the icing sugar and vanilla extract and repeat the same process, and then the same with the cream cheese.  

Assemble the cake layers with the filling. When all the layers are ready, cover everything with the frosting and add the chopped nuts on the sides. Refrigerate for 30 minutes.

With a piping bag, decorate the top of the cake and make some carrots with the color gels.

The secret restaurant that I’m told a lot of the French don’t even know about. 

Hidden under Napoleon’s Temple, is Le Foyer de la Madeleine, a very reasonably-priced ritzy 18th century restaurant. You enter on the side of the church. 

The servers are volunteers, b/c it’s a non-profit, and the proceeds go to help the less-fortunate. 

They’re only open for lunch, and a complete meal, including appetizer & dessert, costs 15 euros for non-members (10, if you’re a member).

Day 5, (Paris: Downtown; Montmartre, Opera, Galeries Lafayette, L'église de la Madeleine, Bir Hakeim ), 29-9-2019

My day started with raindrops on the roof window right above me, waking me up after a nice day I spent earlier. Looked down the street to realize it’s gonna be a very rainy day. Pointing out the irony, that was the day I planned to do my laundry. There was a laundry place near Islem’s, so I prepared my stuff. Islem shared his washing machine detergent to allow me to save money, Went down and it was slightly raining, the spiral staircase at Islem’s had a window view on the train tracks.

Started doing laundry, which cost me around 6 Euros, including both washing and drying. I gotta say having a close self-service laundry place near home is something we really miss in Egypt. The whole experience isn’t that bad, I’ve literally left my clothes to be washed and went out to have breakfast and then I came back to find it almost done. Spent some time for it to be dry then took it all home.

Started my day from Gare du Nord, that’s where I made an amazing discovery! You can get your photos printed in printing machines inside the station, which I later discovered it’s all over Paris, and the picture literally costed me 0.25 euro only!

Took the metro to Anvers to visit Montmartre, started my visit by Sacré-Cœur, which is a beautiful basilica on the top of a hill looking over Paris. This beautiful place was featured in one of my favorite French movies to date; Amélie.

As climbing up there tends to be quite a tiring experience, the view later can always be as calming as it looks. I always do nothing except sitting on the stair up there, and just stare at this to catch my breath.

One of the things that I’ve always wanted to capture is the sinking building of Montmartre. As I shared earlier, the basilica is on a higher land. And accordingly if you tilted your phone to the right or left aligning with the up-going hill, the building will pretty much look like this:

Here’s something quite obvious about the basilica; It gets bigger and more beautifully detailed the more you’re getting closer. I always tend to spend some time getting a lot of photos of the executive exterior.

And as much as it had a beautiful exterior, entering the building feels different. The Interior ceiling is high with some beautiful natural light, allowing you to feel calm and enjoy the scene.

I didn’t stay there for long to avoid the crowds arriving, and instead, treated myself with some Montmartre street-walking. It is absolutely one of my favorite neighborhoods in Paris that truly captures a never-forgotten old city spirit.

Passing by some remarkable Montmartre landmarks like Le Consulat restaurant, which is an Iconic building that shapes most of the Montmartre pictures and paintings.

The neighborhood also contains a beautiful semi-spiral street showing the basilica in the background, leading the way to Buste de Dalida.

As an Egyptian, I’ve always been fascinated by Dalida. Her appreciation and devotion for the Egyptian culture, given the fact that she lived there for a while, didn’t make her any less French. She used to be a resident of Montmartre, and she’s memorized by a statue for her in the end of the above street.

And not very far from this place, her beautiful house is located.

The neighborhood also contains another location for another important residents; The Apartment of Theo Van Gogh, Vincent Van Gogh’s brother who always supported Vincent financially. This is also the place where Vincet Van Gogh stayed at in Paris. The two brothers shared an apartment on the third floor of this building from 1886 – 1888.

Last but not least, Moulin Rouge. One of the world's most famous Cabaret and show business venue, which has been running for more than a century.

I started moving from this neighborhood towards Galeries Lafayette via Metro. Galeries Lafayette is a very luxurious shopping mall right in front of the Paris Opera house, Palais Garnier. It contains most of the well known clothing brands with the latest fashion trends, all under one roof.

The mall features a free roof access to look at Pairs from a higher position, displaying a back view of the opera, Parisian buildings and Eiffel Tower in the horizon.

I proceeded to the opera entrance to get a shot of the Iconic golden figures featured at the building front, It’s obviously one of Paris’s fanciest neighborhoods.

I was originally heading to Le-Champs-Elysees, and on my way I was stopped by a very beautiful church, which I also wanted to visit the year before. L'église de la Madeleine is a church which was designed in its present form as a temple to the glory of Napoleon's army.

I entered and I was so lucky to find an ongoing choir for Mozart’s Requiem, performed by Nancy Ducale choir and orchestra. The echo caused by the choir singing is one of the indescribable feelings in the world, specially inside such a beautiful place like this one.

I remember I stayed there for like 20 minutes listening to this ongoing act, before I started moving to downtown. I passed by the Élysée Palace, the official residence of the President of France. Passing through Le Champs-Élysées, I started to get hungry and headed for my first economy option, McDonald’s. Fun Fact: In France, McDonald’s serves not only French Fries, but also wedges. The Meal roughly costs 8 euros, and it was a way to treat myself on after an exhausting walking tour in Paris.

I was later joined by Mohamed near Arc de Triumph and started heading towards Bir Hakeim. I told him there’s a surprising scene that I really wanted him to experience. Part of Metro line 6 crosses over the Seine, revealing a very beautiful panoramic view of Eiffel tower.

Leaving the station to capture Seine view near the bridge, couldn’t help but enjoy the symmetrical view of the bridge. It was wildly popular as it was featured in “Inception”

Pont Bir Hakeim is centered by La France Renaissante, a beautiful statue pointing towards the Seine, but when captured right, It can create a beautiful scene with Eiffel tower.

and since we were already on Île aux Cygnes, we took a walk literally in the middle of the river to reach one of the three versions of statue of liberty around Paris. 

It was going really well until it started to rain heavily. I’ve never witnessed such heavy rains before my entire life. And Since no metro or bus stations were nearby due to the fact we’re isolated in the middle of the Seine, we had to walk under rain to the nearest bus station. And to make it worse, buses weren’t arriving on time so we stood there till a bus finally rescued us and luckily was heading towards Montmartre.

The rain stopped when we were on board, and we finally made it to Montmartre. I took some beautiful night shots for the Basilica and Moulin Rouge, then headed home.

I later jumped on the Metro and headed home to rest after that heavy rain and exhausting day around the city, Islem luckily offered to order Pizza for both of us, which I remember was really delicious! I ate it and Immediately felt the need to rest.

Day 103rd of quarantine: Containing your sanity with an ongoing repetitive patterns can easily make you go mad. Now I understand how scientists, authors and writers might perform really well when they’re isolated, but accordingly lose some of their sanity or the way they deal with life in general. I’m none of the above of course, I’m just a normal human being who’s disappointed of how I’m taking this. The worst thing about the COVID-19 isolation is leaving me to my thoughts and who I truly am. Everything I’m feeling when I’m alone is a reflection to thoughts I’ve always chose not to see, to hanging problems or issues I’ve always delayed for 29 years of my life.

Every past midnight thought is another reason for me to doubt, fix and learn. I’ve been doing these reflections for quite a while, tried fixing and confronting but that wasn’t easy. It took me some courage to understand the worst about myself, and the value I’m not recognizing at the same time.

I’m writing this on June 27th, 2020. I’m in the worst state of mind in months, and I’m trying to survive my own thoughts. The repetitive patterns are killing me.

I want to feel alive again.

Cela fait longtemps que Je ne t'ai pas parlé, mais Mon Fils bien-aimé, Yeshouah et Son Sacré-Cœur, était avec toi et te soutenait régulièrement. Je n'avais donc pas besoin de te répéter les mêmes Paroles que t'a précisées Mon Fils bien-aimé, parce que Lui et Moi, nous ne faisons qu'UN dans la Trinité Sainte, et les Paroles qu'Il prononce sont Mes Paroles. Mais si Je viens te parler aujourd'hui, c'est pour t'exprimer Ma grande colère et même Ma fureur que J'éprouve à l'encontre de ce monde malade, ainsi que de l'Église de Mon Fils bien-aimé. Tu vas répéter très exactement, sans omettre un seul mot, en répandant, par tous les moyens de ta convenance, TOUT ce que Je vais te dire, afin que le monde et l'Église connaissent Ma fureur, et que chacun soit averti des conséquences qui vont suivre. Dit au monde ceci : Moi, le Créateur de toutes vies, Dieu le Père Tout-Puissant, par Ma fureur innommable, je vais broyer cette Terre en la pressant dans Ma Main, comme une balle de caoutchouc ! Vous, peuple de la Terre, vous ne M'avez pas écouté ; vous n'avez pas obéi à Mes Lois. Vous avez préféré les lois de ce monde, l'argent de ce monde, les choses de ce monde, au lieu de suivre Mes Commandements et les Paroles des Évangiles de Mon Fils Bien-Aimé ! Puisque vous voulez faire tout ce qui est contraire à Ma Volonté, en Me défiant sans cesse ; puisque vous n'écoutez pas Mes Envoyés, dont la Main ultime tendue par Mon Fils que vous venez de rejeter, dans cette grande Évangélisation qu'Il voulait, pour sauver des millions d'âmes avant la fin des Temps, vous aurez droit à Ma fureur innommable, tant elle est indescriptible ! Il essaie de te réconforter par Son Cœur si abîmé par les péchés odieux des hommes, mais en même temps, Il te fait ressentir un peu de Sa propre souffrance qui est infinie. Surtout, Mon enfant bien-aimé, répète tout ce que Je viens de te dire, au monde entier et à l'Église de Mon Fils. Personne, ou si peu te croiront, mais au moins tu auras fait ton devoir d'Avertisseur. Quant à ceux qui se permettent de te juger aujourd'hui, dis leur que bientôt les rôles seront inversés ! Que chacun sache que ceux qui osent s'en prendre à un Envoyé de Dieu, s'en prend à Dieu Lui-même !  Mes Chers Frères et Sœurs en Christ, ce Message que je viens de recevoir, en ce samedi 6 septembre 2008, dès 12 h 50, m'a bouleversé, parce que je ne m'y attendais pas, d'une part et, d'autre part, la teneur des Propos de Notre Père et Créateur était particulièrement violente ! Non, pas une violence agressive, mais une violence de souffrance profonde et une lassitude que j'ai intensément ressenties dans mon âme. Certes, ce n'est pas un langage nouveau, puisque je connaissais déjà les prophéties, qui m'avaient été communiquées par l'Esprit de Dieu, depuis plus de 30 ans ! Toutefois, j'avoue avoir été très ébranlé intérieurement par les Paroles du Père céleste, et ma souffrance s'est accrue un peu plus, parce que je sais que ce Message fera encore la risée de beaucoup. Ma souffrance sincère est surtout dans la crainte pour votre vie : la présente et la future. Je ne crains pas du tout pour ma vie, mais pour la vôtre. Aussi, mon humble devoir est de transmettre ce Message, comme a été le devoir de tous les Prophètes des temps anciens et, notamment, d'Ezéchiel, où je vous invite à relire le chapitre 33, versets de 7 à 9. En effet, ce sont deux versets qui sont propres à tous les Avertisseurs, et notre devoir est d'avertir ceux qui commettent des iniquités, au Très Saint Nom du Seigneur, afin que nous n'ayons pas péché pour manquement à notre pénible devoir. Oui, aussi pénible soit-il, notre devoir est d'obéir à Dieu et de faire toute Sa Volonté. Moi, je ne suis qu'un pauvre pécheur, qu'une poussière et une cendre, mais qui a un poids très lourd à porter sur mes frêles épaules. Alors je vous transmets ce Message, avec tout l'Amour que je ressens dans mon cœur, pour vous tous et toutes, et même toutes les personnes qui m'ont fait beaucoup de mal. Mon rôle est de pardonner, et c'est ce que je fais de grand cœur. Cependant et malgré tout, il y a aussi le Jugement de Dieu, et si dans votre âme vous ne vous repentez pas du mal que vous avez fait, vous vous placez vous-mêmes des "charbons ardents" sur votre tête. N'oubliez pas que : "tout ce qui est lié sur la terre est lié dans le ciel" et, au Jugement dernier, les fautes terrestres ressortiront. Je vous implore donc de reconnaître vos erreurs maintenant avant qu'il ne soit trop tard. Veuillez garder aussi en mémoire que la Loi de Dieu c'est : L'AMOUR ! Aimez Dieu avant tout, adorez-Le, mais aimez-vous aussi les uns les autres, car Dieu est dans le Cœur des âmes de tous les hommes de la Terre !...

Mythology Mondays - Beelzebub

Beelzebub is known as one of the princes of the seven princes of hell in demonology. He is also known as “Lord of the Flyers”, or “Lord of the Flies”. He has therefore been represented as both an anthropomorphic demon (pictured above) and a fly(pictured below).

Beelzebub (or Beelzebul) is a name derived from a Philistine god, formerly worshipped in Ekron, and later adopted by some Abrahamic religions as a ‘major demon’. The name Beelzebub is also associated with the Canaanite god Baal (whom we will cover in another post). Beelzebub is also used in some Christian mythology as another name for the Devil, similar to Satan. Due to his association with flies and demons with wings, he is regularly described as a flying being.

In Testament of Solomon, it is written that Beelzebul claims to cause destruction through tyrants, force men to worship demons, introduce lust to priests, wreak havoc in cities, inciting murders, and to bring on war. The Testament of Solomon is an Old Testament pseudepigraphical work, purportedly written by King Solomon, in which Solomon mostly describes particular demons whom he enslaved to help build the temple, with substantial Christian interpolations.

Occultist Johan Weyer from the 16th-century described Beelzebub as a high placing demon in Hell’s Hierarchy. He also wrote that Beelzebub led a successful revolt against the Devil. Similarly, 17th-century exorcist Sebastien Michaelis stated Beelzebub is among the three most prominent fallen angels (the other two being Lucifer and Leviathan).

John Milton wrote Beelzebub seemingly as the second-ranking of the many fallen angels in his epic poem Paradise Lost. Milton wrote of Beelzebub, "than whom, Satan except, none higher sat." Beelzebub is also a character in John Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress.

Sebastien Michaelis associated Beelzebub with the deadly sin of pride. However, according to Peter Binsfeld, Beelzebub was the demon of gluttony, one of the other seven deadly sins, whereas Francis Barrett asserted that Beelzebub was the prince of false gods.

Within religious circles, the accusation of demon possession has been used as both an insult and an attempt to categorize unexplained behavior. Not only had the Pharisees disparagingly accused Jesus of using Beelzebub's demonic powers to heal people (Luke 11:14–26), but others have been labeled possessed for acts of an extreme nature.

Down through history, Beelzebub has been held responsible for many cases of demonic possession, such as that of Sister Madeleine de Demandolx de la Palud, Aix-en-Provence in 1611, whose relationship with Father Jean-Baptiste Gaufridi led not only to countless traumatic events at the hands of her inquisitors but also to the torture and execution of that "bewitcher of young nuns", Gaufridi himself.

Beelzebub was also imagined to be casting his influence in Salem, Massachusetts: his name came up repeatedly during the Salem witch trials, the last large-scale public expression of witch hysteria in North America or Europe, and afterward, Rev. Cotton Mather wrote a pamphlet, titled Of Beelzebub and his Plot.

In modern culture, the mythology of Beelzebub has also loosely been used in Japanese manga of the same name; Beelzebub. Where it follows the story of a baby found to be the son of a greater demon. 

Beelzebub’s use in mythology is used as an external excuse for primal feelings amongst humans such as jealousy, lust, and rebellion. Created simply so that people can pass on misdemeanors onto a creature who is unaccountable due to not existing on any real or physical level.

Whirlwind Paris: a scavenger hunt

I’ve just completed perhaps the most blissful final exam of my life so far: a scavenger hunt around Paris! My professors split our class into pairs and handed us a list of places to find. The main rule: absolutely no phones! We had six hours to complete our hunt. Here are a few little blurbs about some of the places we visited (already I want to go back to all of them!). If any of you happen to visit Paris in the near future, I highly recommend these destinations, as many are off the beaten path and are not super “touristy” (hallelujah!).

Place Edith Piaf, 20th arr. 

Situated in the 20th arrondissement, this place is named after the French singer Edith Giovanna Gassion, famously known as Edith Piaf, or “The Little Sparrow”. Fifteen years after Piaf’s death, the place was created as a site of remembrance and memory. In the middle of the place, a statue depicting Piaf singing with her arms outstretched overhead can be seen. Sculpted by Lisbeth Delisle, the statue was inaugurated in 2003 as a tribute to Piaf. Through the emotion and energy conveyed through the sculpture, one can almost hear Piaf singing her famous “Non je ne Regrette Rien”.

Jean Jacques Rousseau, a Genevan philosopher, writer, and political theorist, heavily inspired leaders of the French Revolution and the Romantic generation. During his lifetime, he is considered one of the most if not the most influential philosopher, as his thought drew the Age of Reason to a close. Importantly, Rousseau highlighted “liberty as an object of almost universal aspiration”. At the age of 30, Rousseau moved to Paris. From 1774-1778, Rousseau lived on rue Plâtrière, his last home in Paris. In 1886, rue Plâtrière was renamed to rue Jean Jacques Rousseau to commemorate this truly influential thinker and philosopher. Also worthy of mention on this street is a cookery shop named E. Dehillerin, where famous American cook Julia Child would go to buy all of her cookware when she lived in France.

Place des Vosges, 3rd & 4th arr. 

The Place des Vosges exists as Paris’ oldest square. Once the site of the Hotel des Tournelles and acquired by the Crown in 1407, Catherine de’ Medici pulled down the residence following the death of Henri II. Later, in 1605, Henri IV transformed Place des Vosges to what it now appears as today. Upon our entrance, we were surrounded by elegant, symmetrical buildings that bordered a beautiful park dappled in morning sunshine. In the middle of the green space, a statue of Louis XIII stands. Fountains trickle nearby. The buildings bordering the park, which were once houses, contain a variety of shops and cafes on the bottom level, easily accessible from inside the place.  Also of note are particular plaques of commemoration around the buildings that tell of former residents, like Victor Hugo at no. 6.

Gare St. Lazare, 8th arr. 

Located near rue Haussmann and the famous Printemps department store, Gare St. Lazare presents itself both as a large train-station and a modern shopping center. We were both surprised to find that the quintessentially Haussmannian-style facade of this building held such a sleek, modern interior, with a plethora of high-end shops to boot! The shopping center is a fairly new addition to the space, as major renovations have taken place over the past few years. With the addition of the shopping center, Gare St. Lazare pairs the old with the new and represents much of the character of Paris today-- both historical and increasingly modern. I especially enjoyed visiting this site because it was one of Monet’s favorite muses before he decided to focus solely on nature and the natural environment. He painted a variety of paintings inside Gare St. Lazare, focused on light, steam, and of course- the trains. I find it extremely interesting that during Monet’s life, Gare St. Lazare was a modern subject for him. In a new way, this place has taken on a new modernity, reiterating the idea that what is modern is always changing.

Buttes-Chaumont Park, 19th arr. 

By far my favorite destination on our list, this glorious park is known for its sprawling greenery, steep cliffs, and rolling hills. An island is located in the middle of the park, where the Temple of Sibyl rests. This Corinthian-style temple was created after a Roman temple bearing the same name in Tivoli, Italy. The Roman temple was built around the second century BC. Despite the intense climb, the view from the top of the Temple is absolutely wonderful. One can see over Paris, all the way across to Montmartre and over St. Denis. We couldn’t help but take the time to appreciate the view, even amidst our crazy time-crunched scavenger hunt across Paris!

We finished around four hours in, with enough time to snag lunch at the original Cosi. Yum! 

All in all, this was a final exam I’ll never forget... a place I’ll never forget... je t’aime, Paris!
