"While I appreciate that you did that for me, I don't appreciate the fact that you nearly died because of it."
Using this prompt list.
Chelle woke with a groan. Her head felt heavy, the world swimming even before she dared open her eyes. But the brief glimpse of the world she’d got assured her she was back in the safety of the ship. A stream of sunlight had cut through a crack in the curtains. An assurance that she was in Smokes’s cabin; that it was no longer the middle of the night as she thought it should have been.
‘You’re awake.’ Smokes’s voice was barely more than a hoarse whisper, but even with that she could hear the relief behind his words.
‘How long have I been out for?’ she asked, the words scratchy in her own throat. She tentatively peeled an eyelid open, and found the world didn’t give her an immediately stark headache.
Cautiously, she opened the other.
Smokes was silent as he moved from his vast desk chair and towards her. Where some people seemed to rock with the boat as they moved, he always seemed to be at one with it. If anything, he wobbled more on dry land than when walking his ship. But there was an uneasy look behind his eyes. Dark circles clung to his tanned skin like bruises.
‘Smokes?’
He shook his head ever so slightly and perched on the edge of the bed. His bed, she realised. ‘While I appreciate that you did that for me,’ he told her, voice still low, slightly strained as if he were leashing his emotions lest they tumble out of him in a crashing wave that might drown them both, ‘I don’t appreciate the fact that you nearly died because of it.’
‘How long?’
A tick of annoyance seemed to jump in his jaw, but Smokes had shuttered the look from his eyes before she could try reading into it further.
‘Two days,’ he told her, not quite meeting her eyes. ‘It would have been worse, if not for...’ She watched his throat bob as he swallowed. ‘You could have just given me the antidote rather than downing it and then my drink.’
‘It might not have worked on you.’
‘It might not have worked on you!’ His eyes blazed as he stood, looming over her for once. It was the first time she’d ever really appreciated how terrifying he could have been to his enemies. Even in the early days of knowing him, there had been something that didn’t scream violence to her. Sure there was danger there, but he hid it behind charm and promises in silky voices that wrapped threats like gifts.
‘There was no chance of it failing for me,’ she told him evenly. If there was one thing her father had been good at, it was protecting his children from any real outward injury. He couldn’t protect their hearts, but protecting them from possible murder attempts was something he did without blinking.
Smokes loosed a shaky breath before dropping back onto the bed beside her. ‘Never try to save me like that again.’
‘No promises,’ she told him.
There was a flicker of mild irritation behind his eyes, but she could have sworn there was something like affection underpinning it as well.
‘Well then, it looks like I owe you a debt.’
‘Already paid,’ she told him, offering a small smile. Smokes might not have realised it, but he’d saved her by letting her onto the ship that first day. Even if he hated her then, even if he’d threatened to ransom her off, he’d saved her from a drawn out death she wasn’t sure she could handle.
He offered her the briefest of smiles before placing a very quick kiss against the top of her head.
‘Rest,’ he ordered. ‘Otherwise I’m a pair of hands down on deck for even longer, and who knows what trouble that could cause.’
‘Aye, Captain,’ she chirped as he stood, hoping she would be back on deck sooner rather than later.

I realised that all of Shaw's ancestors have a biblical origin to their name, so what two biblical names would you choose for him? One for its meaning, and one for the way it sounds and suits him. I found out that Esau means hairy, it's a shame his uncle took that one.
Omg you’re right! I was going to say that Cornelius isn’t but I looked it up and it is! Guess Sebastian is the c-c-combo breaker! Ummm, I went through a lot of possibilities, but if we’re just talking two...Samson or Solomon? They’re Biblical, they’re something I could see a guy being named in the modern era (as opposed to, say, Nebuchadnezzar), they start with S, and they have a strong “sound” as well as being after strong figures---Samson is LITERALLY super-strong, he’s “hairy” in a different way, and, like Shaw, he was something of a “Puzzle Boss” who couldn’t be physically bested by ordinary means and his enemies had to figure out the trick to his super-strength. It might be a LITTLE too on the nose for a guy named Samson to end up being super-strong, but Marvel did it with Doc Leonard Samson.  As for Solomon, he was a powerful ruler, incredibly wealthy, and holy shit HE FUCKED. Like. A lot. Goddamn.  For a third, non-S option, there’s also Elijah or Elias, who was a total badass that took shit from NOBODY and ascended to Heaven alive in a chariot of fire. He was also described as a hairy man with a leather belt, so there you go. My concern with Elijah and Solomon is that from what I understand, they are important figures in Judaism, and common names in the Jewish community, so associating them with a super-greedy money-grubbing rich guy who is part of a secret organization trying to control the world is...probably NOT the most advisable of ideas, so I might ultimately go with Samson. Also I REALLY LOVE THE REGINA SPEKTOR SONG like it’s just HAUNTING.  Others I considered, but did not make the cut: - Job : Went through a ton of adversity and still came out on top. Seems very Shaw. I feel like readers might read it as pronounced like “job” though. Also “Job Shaw” doesn’t sound right. - Silas, Thaddeus, Abram: No reason, I just thought they had “strong” sounds, even vaguely threatening/villainous. Like some names just sound a little more suited to bad guys than others.  - Tobias: Tobias really does not sound strong or scary on its own, I actually think it’s sweet, but Tobias Shaw sounds a bit tougher somehow? But then you could shorten it to Toby which is definitely NOT a tough name, lol. Toby is a beagle name to me. It just is. That’s what you call a beagle. It just is. I couldn’t take him seriously with a cute name like that. - Jethro: Strong sound, means  "abundance" so I felt like that related well to the empire he’s built and his decadent lifestyle. I knew a nice horse once named Jethro. - Eli:  Means "ascension" which I thought fit how he started from impoverished origins and built his way up. I wasn’t sure it had a strong enough sound though. Shaw’s name NEEDS a strong sound.  - Enoch: Means  "dedicated" which fits his work ethic. It’s a little...esoteric though? Like I can see meeting a guy named Samson, I’d be a bit more surprised to meet a guy named Enoch. I feel like his name should sound...honestly, kinda like what you might expect an Amish guy to be named? I know that’s a weird way to put it, but---Cornelius, Esau, Jacob, Hiram, Obadiah, those are the names of his ancestors, you know? And I guess Enoch fits in well enough with them but hmmm just didn’t seem RIGHT somehow, idk.  - Achim:  Means "he will establish" and was an ancestor of Jesus. As with Eli, I thought it fit how Shaw built a fortune despite coming from nothing, but as with Enoch it doesn’t sound right. Like I think most people, if you asked them, would think it sounds Middle Eastern (which....technically all Biblical names are, but...) and I think the Shaw type of Biblical name should sound very “white” in a very specific way? Like not “McKayla and Aiden and Brayden” white but like...well like I said, a name you might expect from a Pennsylvania Protestant (which he is, or at least grew up around most likely) or maybe a hillbilly (which he is NOT but they stereotypically draw from the same name pool---Jebidiah, etc. ) And like Achim Shaw just...didn’t seem right, especially on him.  Of these runners-up, I’d go with Silas. Actually, shit, I might replace the Solomon option with Silas! It also sounds extra-villainous to me because of the Gothic novel UNCLE SILAS

Book List 2018
I’m a couple weeks behind on this, but here’s the list of books I read in 2018. I’ve broken it down by category, though this is pretty loose since, you know, genres bleed into one another and such. You can also find reviews of some of these books here, and I always take requests for reviews as well. Follow me on Goodreads to see what I’m reading and rating.
Let me know what you think if you’ve read any of these books or have recommendations, and, as always, please feel free to send me malicious personal attacks if I say something you disagree with.

Worst of 2018
Every single book I read this past year had redemptive value. Even if it was total garbage, it still taught me some stuff (like how not to write a book). Even a bad book can be a good book if you let it be.
So, here’re a few books that didn’t quite hit the spot for me:
Ready Player One by Ernest Cline
Ishmael: An Adventure of the Mind and Spirit by Daniel Quinn
Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee
Spook: Science Tackles the Afterlife by Mary Roach
The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
Ink Spots by Brian McDonald
The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair That Changed America by Erik Larson
Best of 2018
It was genuinely difficult to choose my top books of 2018. What a literary year it has been for me. 2018 marks the most books I’ve read in a year, and I was lucky enough to come across some real game-changers. I finally read the Harry Potter series and, boy howdy, did it ever live up to the hype. What took me so long?? But this was, more than anything, the year of James Baldwin. He has made an indelible mark on me as a reader, a writer, and a human. What a year this has been! I hope to read a fraction as much beautiful, lovely, challenging, profound prose in 2019.
In no particular order, here are the books of 2018 that most moved me, shook me, rattled me, rolled me:
Behave: The Biology of Humans at Our Best and Worst by Robert Sapolsky
Teaching to Transgress: Education as the Practice of Freedom by bell hooks
The Pragmatic Turn by Richard J. Bernstein
Pragmatism and Feminism: Reweaving the Social Fabric by Charlene Haddock Seigfried
The Ethics of Ambiguity by Simone de Beauvoir
What Is Real?: The Unfinished Quest for the Meaning of Quantum Physics by Adam Becker

Well, there you have it, folks. Here’s to many more good books in the years to come!
The unread story is not a story; it is little black marks on wood pulp. The reader, reading it, makes it live: a live thing, a story. —Ursula K. Le Guin

FLIX: SHAZAM
Tumblr media
By Alyn Darnay
Tumblr media
Directed by: David Sandberg Screenplay by: Harry Gayden Cast: Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Jack Dylan Grazer, Mark Strong, Dijmon Hounsou, Grace Fulton, Faithe Herman, Ian Chen, Cooper Andrews, Marta Milans
“Shazam,” I shouted aloud and… poof? No poof! Nothing happened; I guess I’m not a superhero. Too bad, might have been lots of fun fighting injustice on an earth-saving level rather than writing about the fantasy ones that do!
I remember a series on TV years ago (The Greatest American Hero) about a teacher named Ralph Hinkley who is given a super suit by aliens, promptly loses the instruction booklet and has to learn how to use it one disaster after another. It’s kinda the same thing here, with the twist that now it’s the student, not the teacher that gets the powers he doesn’t know how to control.
Filled with the joyous wonder of childhood and overflowing with endearing performances by a diverse cast of talented teenagers, Shazam turns out to be an entertaining mix of humor and heart that pays homage more to the early films of Spielberg (ET) and Abrams (Super 8), than those of the typical DC universe heroes.
Here’s the storyline…
It all starts in the “Rock of Eternity” lair with the dying wizard Shazam (Hounsou) who is searching for a person “pure of soul” to take over his position as hero/overseer of the incarnate 7 deadly sins. After rejecting centuries of potential subjects, he finally settles on streetwise 14-year-old foster kid Billy Batson (Angel).
The wizard endows Billy with his powers before he fades to dust, by making him shout out one-word: “Shazam!”, which instantly turns him into the adult superhero, the new Shazam (Levi). The problem is that he’s still a kid inside of this big, muscular, utopian body. A kid who has no idea of what he can and can’t do with his powers.
So he does what any teenager would do with superpowers, he has fun with them! Testing the limits of his abilities with reckless abandon, trying to fly, see through objects, shoot lightning bolts out of his hands, run faster than a speeding bullet. You get the idea. The trouble is he has an archrival that wants his powers. Can he master his abilities before the evil Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Strong) can defeat him?
The film is actually all about family, what it means, how it’s changed, and how it fits into in our new reality. Not that it’s preachy, it isn’t, it just forms the basis for everything that happens. Director Sandberg has crafted a silly, yet quite dark at times, fantasy for teens. His biggest misstep is that he made the adult version of Billy stupid, while the younger version is quite smart. It’s often hard to believe, even in a fantasy, that an insular streetwise kid would all of a sudden start taking selfies on a street corner to amuse people. Oh well, I guess you’re supposed to just go with the flow.
My take… I went with the flow and enjoyed watching the film, though I thought it was a bit too long. It’s good goofy fun for a teenage audience hungry for effects ridden superhero films.
Shazam Rating: 3 1/2 stars (out of 5) Rated: PG-13 (for intense sequences of action, language, and suggestive material) Running Time: 130 minutes

Name Changes
Abram and Sarai were renamed, by God, to Abraham and Sarah (Genesis 17:1 - 16).
Baalzebub (2Kings 1), whose name means "dung god" or "lord of the flies," was a pagan deity of Ekron. The New Testament word Beelzebub, a variation of Baalzebub, was used by Jesus and others as another reference to Satan the devil (Matthew 10:25, 12:24 - 27, etc.). See our article on the devil's many names and titles for more information.
Daniel, Mishael, Hananiah and Azariah, Jews taken into captivity by King Nebuchadnezzar, were given the Babylonian names of Belteshazzar, Meshach, Shadrach and Abed-Nego (Daniel 1:6 - 7).
Dorcas is also called Tabitha in the New Testament (Acts 9:36 - 42). She is the only recorded person resurrected from the dead by the Apostle Peter.
Jacob, Abraham's grandson, was renamed Israel by God after he wrestled all night long with a mysterious man who was likely Jesus Christ (Genesis 32:24 - 28).
Egypt's Pharaoh renamed Joseph (Jacob's son), after he raised him to the second most powerful position in the country, to Zaphnathpaaneah (Genesis 41:45). Joseph was thirty years old when he received this responsibility.
Joseph, who was also called Barsabas or Justus (Acts 1:23), was one of the two people who could have taken Judas' place as one of the New Testament's twelve apostles.
Judas (not Iscariot), one of Christ's twelve apostles, was also called Lebbeus (Matthew 10:3) or Thaddeus (Mark 3:18, Matthew 10:3).
Matthew, the gospel writer, was also called Levi (Mark 2:14, Luke 5:27 - 29).
Molech (Leviticus 18:21, 20:2 - 5, etc.), the name of a pagan deity, is also called Milcom (1Kings 11:5, 33, 23:13) and Moloch (Amos 5:26, Acts 7:43).
Nathanael (John 1:45), another of Jesus' original disciples, was also called Bartholomew (Matthew 10:3, Mark 3:18). It was Nathanael who, after first hearing about Jesus, openly questioned whether "any good thing" could come out of Nazareth (John 1:47)!
Saul, in the New Testament, is also referred to as Paul (the apostle) starting in Acts 13:9.
Simon (John 1:41) was called by four other names in the KJV New Testament. He was called Cephas by Jesus (John 1:40 - 42) and by the Apostle Paul (1Corinthians 1:12, etc.). Luke referred to him Simeon in Acts 15:14. His most well known references, however, are as Simon Peter (Matthew 16:16) or simply Peter (Matthew 4:18, etc.).
Simon the Canaanite (Matthew 10:4), one of the twelve original apostles, was also known as "Simon called Zelotes" (Luke 6:15) or Simon Zelotes (Simon the Zealot, see Acts 1:13).
Thomas, one of Christ's Jesus' original disciples, was also called Didymus (John 11:16), a name which means a twin or two-fold. Thomas' initial refusal to believe Jesus rose from the dead gave rise to the phrase "doubting Thomas."
Zacharias, found in Matthew 23:35, is referring to an Old Testament person named Zechariah (see 2Chronicles 24:20 - 22).
The name Zechariah is spelled Zachariah in four KJV Bible places (2Kings 14:29, 15:8, 11, 18:2).
The city of Bethel was originally called Luz. The location was renamed by the patriarch Jacob (Genesis 12:8, Genesis 28:10 - 19).
The city of Dan was first called Leshem (Joshua 19:47) or Laish (Judges 18:7). It received its new designation after the tribe of Dan slaughtered its inhabitants, repopulated the area with its own people, and renamed it after the tribe's founder (Joshua 19:47).
Debir (Joshua 15:15) was originally referred to as Kirjath-sepher (Joshua 15:15) or Kirjath-sannah (Joshua 15:49).
Engedi, near the Dead Sea, was originally referred to as the city of Hazazon-tamar (Genesis 14:7, 2Chronicles 20:2).
Biblical commentaries speculate the city of Ephraim (John 11:54) may have been originally known as Ophrah (Joshua 18:23) or possibly Ephron (2Chronicles 13:19).
The city of Hebron was first called Kirjatharba (Genesis 23:2, Joshua 14:15) or Arbah (Genesis 35:27). It included an area of oak trees, considered part of the city, named Mamre where Abraham, Isaac and Jacob resided for part of their lives.
The city of Hormah, first called Zephath, received its new name after the tribes of Judah and Simeon conquered it (Judges 1:17).
The capital city of Jerusalem was originally called Jebusi or Jubus (Joshua 18:16, 28, 1Chronicles 11:4). Its name was changed after King David conquered it and made it the new capital of a united Israel (1Chronicles 11).
Zoar's original name was Bela (Genesis 14:2, 8).
Accho (Judges 1:31) changed to Ptolemais (Acts 21:7).
Ashdod (Joshua 11:22) changed to Azotus (Acts 8:40).
The city Aphek (Joshua 12:18) had its name changed to Antipatris (Acts 23:31).
The sea of Chinnereth (Numbers 34:11, Joshua 13:27) received three different Biblical designations in the New Testament. They were the sea of Tiberias (John 6:1), Gennesaret (Luke 5:1) and the sea of Galilee (Matthew 4:18).
Chittim (Numbers 24:24) changed to Cyprus (Acts 4:36).
Japho (Joshua 19:46) changed to Joppa (Acts 9:36).
Lod (1Chronicles 8:12) changed to Lydda (Acts 9:32).
The city name Zarephath (1Kings 17:9) changed to Sarepta (Luke 4:26).
Areopagus and Mars Hill both refer to an elevated location in Athens (Acts 17:19, 22).
The city of Beersheba was also called Shebah (Genesis 26:33).
Bethlehem is also referenced as Bethlehem Ephratah (Ephrathah) in Micah 5:2, Ephrath (Genesis 35:19, 48:7) or Ephratah (Ruth 4:11) in the Bible.
Edom (Genesis 25:30), as well as Seir (Genesis 14:6) and Idumea (Isaiah 34:5 - 6, spelled Idumaea in Mark 3:8) all refer to the area lived in by Esau and his descendants.
Gadarenes (Mark 5:1, Luke 8:26 - 27) and Gergesenes (Matthew 8:28) are essentially referring to the same location near the city of Gardara.
Golgotha, the hill on which Jesus was crucified, is also called "place of the skull" (Matthew 27:31 - 33) and Calvary (Luke 23:32 - 33).
The city of Hebron included an area known as Mamre where Abraham, Isaac and Jacob resided for part of their lives. A cave in the area was used as a burial location for these patriarchs.
The cities of Kadesh-barnea (Deuteronomy 2:14), Kadesh (Genesis 14:7), Enmishpat (Genesis 14:7), Meribah-kadesh (Deuteronomy 32:51) and Meribah (Numbers 27:14) all refer to the same place.
Kedesh (Joshua 20:7), located within the tribe of Naphtali's territory, was also called Kedesh-naphtali (Judges 4:6).
Kirharaseth (2Kings 3:25) is also called Kirhareseth (Isaiah 16:7) and Kirheres (Isaiah 16:11, Jeremiah 48:31, 36).
Kirjath-jearim (Joshua 15:9), located near Jerusalem, is also called Baalah (Joshua 15:9), Kirjathbaal (Joshua 15:60), Baale of Judah (2Samuel 6:2), Kirjath (Joshua 18:28) and Kirjatharim (Ezra 2:25).
Memphis (Hosea 9:6) is another named for the ancient Egyptian capital of Noph (see Isaiah 19:13, Jeremiah 2:16, etc.).
Mount Hermon was called Sirion by the Sidonians (Phoenicians) and Shenir or Senir by the Amorites (Deuteronomy 3:9, Song of Solomon 4:8, Ezekiel 27:5) according to the Bible.
No (Jeremiah 46:25 - 26) is the Hebrew reference to the city of Thebes, the capital of ancient Egypt's Upper Kingdom for most of its history.
Many Biblical commentaries believe that references to Mount Sinai and Mount Horeb are referring to the same general location (see Exodus 3:1, 17:6, 33:6).
The King James translators sometimes varied their spelling of cities and other destinations. Below is a list of such synonymous Biblical references.
The city of Ajalon (Joshua 10:12) is also spelled Aijalon (Joshua 21:24). At Joshua's command, the moon miraculously stood still over the valley of Ajalon so that the Israelites could defeat the Amorites (Joshua 10:12 - 14).
Ashkelon, one of the Philistine's five major cities, is also spelled Askelon in Judges 1:18, 1Samuel 6:17 and 2Samuel 1:20.
Ashtaroth is also spelled Ashtoreth (1Kings 11:5, etc.) and additionally is referenced as Ashteroth Karnaim (Genesis 14:5). It was one of the first cities conquered in the Bible's first recorded war.
Bethshan (1Samuel 31:10, etc.) and Bethshean (Joshua 17:16, etc.) refer to the same city.
Chinnereth (Numbers 34:11, Joshua 13:27) is also spelled Chinneroth (Joshua 11:2, 12:3) or Cinneroth (1Kings 15:20). The city of Chinnereth (Joshua 19:35) may be where the sea it sat near got its name.
Kishon (Joshua 21:28) is spelled Kishion in Joshua 19:20.
An area known as Padanaram is also spelled Padan in Genesis 48:7. Abraham lived in Haran, which is in an area called Padanaram, after he left his hometown of Ur.
Penuel, a city located in Gilead east of the Jordan River, is also spelled Peniel (Genesis 32:30 - 31).
Rameses (Genesis 47:11, etc.), the Egyptian city, is also spelled Raamses (Exodus 1:11).
Shechem (Genesis 37:13, etc.) is also spelled Sichem (Genesis 12:6).
The city of Sidon (Genesis 10:19) is also spelled Zidon in most of the KJV Old Testament (Joshua 11:18, 19:28 - 29, etc.).
Sihor (Joshua 13:3) is also called Shihor in 1Chronicles 13:5.
Sinai is spelled Sina in two New Testament verses (Acts 7:30, 38).
The city of Socoh (Joshua 15:35) can also be spelled Sochoh (1Kings 4:10), Shochoh (1Samuel 17:1), Socho (1Chronicles 4:18), Shoco (2Chronicles 11:7) or Shocho (2Chronicles 28:18).
Zaretan is called Zarthan in 1Kings 7:46 and Zaretan in 1Kings 4:12.
Zeboim (Genesis 10:19), a city that existed close to Sodom and Gomorrah, is also spelled Zeboiim (Genesis 14:2, 8).

Note
I’ve used Elliot before. I had a list of boy names that were associated with the bible and I’ll list them just so others can find them. Such as: Simon, Adriel, Cristiano, Claudio, Jacques, Jean, Jean-Paul, Adonias, Arian/Ariana, Noah, Liam, Daniel, Thaddeus/Thad, and Francis. Now, my name is Leonardo, which I don’t think routes to the Bible in any way ironically but this one really fits me and I’ve kept it for almost 3 years now so that says something. Anyways, I hope this lists helps someone. ✨
These are all so good! I’d like to add, Abraham/Abe/Abram, Joseph/Joey, Jude, Thomas, John/Jack, Gideon (my personal fave), Israel, Gabriel and Seth. Those are just some of my faves!
-mod Jude
