Searchers fail to find Jeff Buckley
Date: June 2, 1997
From: The Australian (National, Australia)
Publisher: News Limited
Document Type: Brief article
MEMPHIS: Heavy rain hampered a search yesterday for singer Jeff Buckley, who vanished on Thursday while swimming in the Mississippi River.
Police boats searched for Buckley but it was too dangerous for divers.
Buckley, 30, disappeared on Thursday night after he and a friend went to Memphis harbour with a portable stereo player and a guitar, said Major Jim Tusant, of the Memphis police.
Major Tusant said Buckley had waded into the river fully clothed and began to sing and swim on his back.
Buckley was signed with Columbia Records and had been in Memphis since February working at a recording studio. Described as a folk singer, his music had gravitated more towards rock.
Critics had compared his sweeping voice to that of Van Morrison and his bombastic lyrics to those of Led Zeppelin.
His 1994 album, Grace, yielded the alternative hit, Last Goodbye, and he contributed to Patti Smith's 1996 album, Gone Again.
Buckley is the son of songwriter Tim Buckley, who died of a drug overdose in 1975, and was best known for his 1967 album, Goodbye and Hello.

There was a post, I can't find it, If anyone else can find it please link it.
About how the north American audience was missing nuanse in Gideon's charecter because we didn't understand the new zealand and Australian cultural imperative to "not make a fuss"
And that gideons jokes and flippant comments were her way of displaying a lot of anger.
It was a really good post. And I'm sad I can't find it....
Anyways.....
I figured that it was my ugly American duty to start consuming more Australian and new zealand media in order to understand this better.
And since I like true crime and have a relatively high tolerance for non eye related creep....I started with a podcast called "the teacher's pet"
And oh my god, this is an excellent true crime pod cast.
And I'm starting to get it....
In 1982, young mother goes missing and everyone is convinced her husband killed her....but no body brings thier suspicions to the police because they don't want to overstep the family right to report the crime
And now 40 years later this pod caster is going around and talking to them, and the pod caster, Hedly Thomas, is really good. But also, these people have all just been waiting to be asked....and now that they finally have a place to were they can speek, the flood gates are open.
Please note, I don't think I understand Australia and New Zealand from half a podcast and an excellent tumblr post. But I do think that I'm starting to investigate the uncanny valley between two cultures were we use the same words but mean different things. If anyone has any good Australian and new zeeland media suggestions to help me get better at picking up ques please let me know

So, there's a lot of USians around who are very clearly fucking fed up with their political choices this election cycle, and planning to sit it out.
And I get it! What's the point of voting if there's no one to vote for?
The thing is, I'm Australian. In Australia, voting is compulsory. We don't get to sit out our elections, and I'll be real honest with you - we don't exactly get better choices than you lot. So how do you vote if there's no one to vote for? You find someone to vote against. And there's always someone to vote against.
Now, we have the pleasure of preferential voting in Australia - We get to rank every candidate from 1 to X, and I'll tell you, there's something so cathartic about putting the biggest bastard of the lot at the very bottom of your preferences. I understand that USians don't get that option - you get to mark one person, and that's it.
That means that you get one shot, so aim it at the biggest bastard of the lot. The candidate you most utterly detest. Put your vote in the worst possible place for them. Don't even think about who that vote's going towards, that's not the point. Remember, every vote is a vote against someone. Make sure you fuck up that someone's election day!

I feel like any aliens that were prey at some point in evolution would have an odd fear of humans. Mostly cause they look like predators, act a bit like predators, and ARE predators. One perfect example is when we're focused on something like a mosquito that's been bugging us for a long time and we are just done.
Alien: "What. What..?"
Human: *HUNTING down a mosquito it saw*
Alien: ".... yeah I am really uncomfortable...."
Human: *quiet footsteps, pupils dialated, intense focus,*
Alien: *WAR FLASHBACKS*
Human: "Found you." *absolutely desimates the mosquito, squashing it into a million pieces as it's guts and various body parts liquidize into blood of the bloodthirsty, now stained on the palm of the human. A living being now reduced to a useless corpse as the human wipes the remains on their pants*
Alien: "I feel like I've just gained trauma."

I don't know why, but I like the idea of humans being to aliens, what cats are to humans...
Alien1: hey, when did you hire a human?
Alien 2: we didn't. They just wandered aboard one day, saying they wanted to "hitch a ride." Then they never left. I think they like it here.
Alien 1: the human distribution system has chosen.
***
Alien stares at the human, who has climbed up a very high shelving unit.
Alien: Human, get down before you hurt yourself.
The humans response is to climb higher.
***
Alien is secretly filming their human, who is spaced out and just staring at nothing.
Alien (whispering): I think the human is about to intercept the brain cell. (Laughter) don't worry human, if it tingles that means it's working.

When Alexander Young, the sacked manager of the Auction Company, attacked him in the press, Jones made a rare public rejoinder:
I have nothing to fear from Mr Young's personal abuse of me, but I may be permitted to remind him that I have now resided nearly thirty-two years in this colony, and if it should please God that few should reside here a like period, and then retire from the active concerns of business with the reputation I possess, I feel assured he will be thankful, as I am, for the state in which he shall be then placed.
