Round 2, Match 4
Bardas and Gorgas Loredan (The Fencer Trilogy) vs Vinsmoke Ichiji, Niji and Yonji (One Piece)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Propaganda under break
Bardas and Gorgas Loredan
Bardas killed Gorgas's kid as revenge. Then turned his body into a bow and gave it to Gorgas to hunt with without telling him what it was made of.
Vinsmoke Ichiji, Niji, and Yonji
Three quadruplets born with superhuman abilities thanks to their dad being an egotistical jerk. They’ve all had their emotions and sense of morality stripped away, leaving only cocky asshats that regularly beat up others for their own enjoyment. The third quadruplet was born without these abilities, so they constantly attacked and mocked him, bringing him to tears on a near constant basis. When he compliments the cooking of one of their staff while protecting her from having a dish thrown at her face, they later find her and attack her for revenge. They’re never given their comeuppance, save for being tied to some chairs and nearly killed. This does not change their personalities. Most of the blame is put on their father (which makes sense, he sucks), but it cannot be denied that the three of them suck too. Just to a lesser degree.

Last song: Not sure, I was listening to a 4 hour podcast on the Cuba Embargo (Well There's Your Problem). The last song stuck in my head was 'Mo nanimo kowakunai, kowaku wa nai' by Chiaki Ishikawa from the Gundam 00 film.
Last movie/TV show: I'm currently dipping into the Dungeon Meshi anime when I'm committing myself to watching something. (I listen to stuff while I sew)
Sweet/spicy/savory: Hard to say. Every flavour has its time and place. Why isn't bitter on here?
Relationship status: Single
Last thing I googled: Unclogging sink drains. My father just keeps pouring bleach down the things and there has to be a better way. They're not even clogged, he just feels the need to buy a bottle of bleach every time there is a mild inconvenience.
Current obsession: It's probably still 'Tanz der Vampire' and (other) German language musicals. You know von Krolock is on my cosplay list now.
Last book: Finished 'Mad Ship' out of the Liveship Traders trilogy by Robin Hobb. Now onto the third, 'Ship of Destiny'. The podcast 'Buckkeep Radio' is a nice spoiler free bookclub to listen to after every 5 chapters and it motivates me.
Looking forward to: my garden fence being repaired. The last storm knocked it over and my neighbour is complaining. But of course fencers are busy after this kind of weather. I also just started another version of Melkor (the Silmarillion) to cosplay...
Hmm tagging @koryusai279 @massivespacewren @innerchorus @tired-reader-writer @darthlenaplant
No pressure, just as and when you feel like it.

'The Blade Itself' --A Review
Tumblr media
Joe Abercrombie is another fantasy author that's been on my radar for quite some time and I'm only just now getting around to breaking into The First Law Trilogy with its first volume, The Blade Itself.
The book opens with Logen Ninefingers running from enemies known as The Shanka somewhere in the mountains of the far north. His companions are dead. He's alone. He's fighting for his life and he goes over a cliff and into a river and then we're off and running. Ninefingers has quite a reputation as the most feared man in the North and after double-checking to make sure his companions are dead. (Turns out, they're not, but they seem to be from Logen's point of view.) He decides to head south to consult with the spirits and see what to do next. They tell him to seek out Bayaz, First of the Magi.
Across the sea in the Agriont, we meet Jezal Luthar, Major West, and Sand Din Glokta, an Inquisitor, and get our introduction to the government of the Union. Luthar is gearing up for the annual Contest to prove how good of a fencer he is. West is assisting him and dealing with the arrival of his free-spirited and rebellious sister, Ardee. Glokta- who was tortured and crippled by the Emperor of the Gurkish as an Inquisitor doing the bidding of his masters, unearthing corruption and trying to navigate competing political agendas and discovering what they all mean.
Logen eventually finds Bayaz and the First of the Magi reveals his plan: they are to travel across the sea to the Agriont, the warn them not only of the impending invasion of Angland from the North, thanks to the self-proclaimed Northern King Bethod (who has had some run-ins with Logen before). Bayaz has his own plans, which are slowly revealed throughout the rest of the book.
Everyone gradually comes together in the Agriont, where the plans of Bayaz are at last revealed, where war is threatening the Union on two fronts (in the north where Bethod is invading Angland) and in the South where the Gurkish Empire is preparing to move against the Union in Dagoshka. Many people believe Bayaz to be a fraud, but he gathers a company- including Jezal Dan Luthar, Logen, Maljinn, his assistant Quai, and the Navigator Longfoot and a mission to go and confront an ancient evil behind the power of The Eaters.
Overall: So, the word on my particular street before I read this book was that Abercrombie was great with fight and action scenes, and great with dialogue, but people could take or leave his prose overall. I can understand where people are coming from with the fight and action scenes- really great, tight, taut writing that moves at the right speed and keeps the pages turning. His dialogue is also really, really great I love how the characters interact with one another and more importantly, how distinct their voices/personalities are and how they develop throughout the book. His prose...
I don't see the criticism of his prose. It didn't bother me at all-- if anything, you could argue that he's got a very visual writing style that would make translating this book to a graphic novel really easy. (Actually, I might check and see if that's been done yet because it seems like low-hanging fruit just sitting there for the taking, as it were and for sure if Netflix or Amazon or a movie studio comes calling this would be a no-brainer to adapt.)
Halfway through this book, I was worried were getting into Rothfuss territory-- it was interesting and felt like it was going somewhere, but I was starting to worry that the payoff wasn't going to be worth the trouble, despite the excellent characters/dialogue/fight scenes. Happily, it comes together very nicely- and in a nice touch, you get to see the characters react to meeting one other in a very genuine way. So Logen, from Jezal's point of view is just this big, hulking Northerner he gets stuck with at first. Similarly, when Maljinn arrives from the South- she is sneering at 'the pinks', because she doesn't yet know them. It's a small, subtle thing, I know, but I noticed it and I really liked it. It was a nice touch seeing how they meet each other from opposing POVs.
I don't know if it brings anything particularly new to the table, genre-wise, but then again, it doesn't have to! The world-building is simple and not complicated. Abercrombie drops you right into the story with a bang and keeps things rolling throughout. It wasn't a chore to read by any stretch of the imagination and I was *this* close to jumping right into the next volume just to keep on going.
My Grade: **** out of **** Fast, funny, compelling characters, wicked bloody fun this was a great read. Will absolutely check out the next two volumes.

#1305: Bob Anderson is a famous darts player championing the world in the 80s, but he was also a javelin thrower in his teens - he was selected for Britain in the 1968 Olympics at the age of 20, but broke his arm before he could compete. there's also a Bob Anderson who competes with something larger than a dart but smaller than a javelin - he was a fencer (peaking in the 50s). this Bob Anderson is also the secret third person who played Darth Vader in the Original Trilogy, alongside David Prowse and James Earl Jones. after his fencing career, he was a fencing choreographer who worked on all sorts of big hit films, including A New Hope, but they wanted him to stunt double for the other two for insurance reasons.
also i think the duelling in ep5/6 is genuinely better than that in ep4. now i know why lol

some video games i grew up with and love:
Rage Racer (PS1) - simple racing game, best OST
Azure Dreams (PS1) - pokemon dungeon crawler with dating and town building side quests. collect monsters, climb to the top of the tower to find out what happened to your father.
Alundra (PS1) - adventure fantasy rpg puzzle game. you Will need the guide book. beautiful art. interesting story. you enter people's dreams to save them from certain death while also trying to fight evil in the real world.
Brave Fencer Musashi (PS1) - silly action adventure fantasy, save the world from evil with two swords as legendary hero Musashi
SaGa Frontier (PS1) - Turn based JRPG, a bit clunky but fun. You choose one of 7 origin heroes, play their personal stories, and meet many other companions to defeat evil together. Only SaGa series game I've played.
Secrets of Evermore (SNES) - your dog runs into a laboratory, now you have to travel across time to get home and face monsters. The dog changes breeds and has special powers each level.
DISNEY. Lion King, Timon & Pumbsa, Toy Story (SNES) Aladdin, The Little Mermaid (SegaGEN) All disgustingly hard for Capitalism(tm) reasons but still very fun.
Heroes Chronicles series (PC) - fantasy strategy game series. Chess with monsters? Interesting but super simple story. One of my favorite games to zone out with.
Might and Magic VI: The Mandate of Heaven (PC) - Fantasy party dungeon crawling RPG, one of my favorites.
Myst (PC) - Puzzle game of the ages.
Syberia I & II (PC) - A good puzzle narrative game, well acclaimed.
Return to Mysterious Island (PC) - Another first person puzzle game. If u cant tell I really loved these. Good game, good anrrative, very short and not as difficult as previous.
Darkfall: The Journal (PC) - scared me as a kid. First person puzzle game with ghosts. Think of a gentler Myst or Riven.
Micro Machines (SegaGen) - Silly racing games. Multiplayer
California Games (SegaGen) - More silly sports games
Ballz (SegaGen) - A super silly fighting game. Everyone is made of little balls. Think of. Round minecraft.
Detective Barbie (PC) - Solving various easy mysteries
Barbie: Race & Ride (PS1) - Barbie & horses <3
Barbie: Super Sports (PS1) - Barbie skating, snowboarding, etc <3
Digimon World 3 (PS1) - Turn based adventure fantasy, love the card minigame
Digimon Rumble Arena (PS1) - Simple fighting game
Star Ocean: Till the End of Time (PS2) - Scifi/fantasy JRPG, interesting fighting system and lore. I otherwise have never played the other Star Ocean games.
Red Ninja (PS2) - Fun stealth game. Pro And Con: Main Character big titty ninja girl you can easily panty shot.
Yu-Gi-Oh: Duelist of the Roses (PS2) - I wish this version of YuGiOh existed IRL, I fucking love this system. I want to print out all the cards and a mat to play.
The Last Remnant (XBox 360) - A square JRPG. I'll be honest there are so many better games both play and lore, but the unique battle system stole my heart.
Additional games I love but I think are more well known:
Zoo Tycoon
Age of Empires / Age of Mythology
Kirby 64
Sonic, Sonic 2
Starcraft
Warcraft 3 (favorite warcraft game, 10/10 recommend)
Diablo 2
Jak & Daxter (Jak II, Jak III)
Spyro Trilogy
Kingdom Hearts (the first one mostly)
Mortal Kombat 3
Mortal Kombat: Armageddon
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Castlevania: Lament of Innocence
Dragon Age series
I have every Final Fantasy up to XIII, but my favorites are V, VIII, IX, and X-2 in that order.
I also have every Silent Hill up to Downpour. My favorites are 1, 2, and 4.
Lore: I played Silent Hill when I was 6 or 7 years old and liked it even though I was bad at it. I played Tomb Raider when I was the same age and was too scared of the bear to ever get past the first 10 minutes.

Young and arrogant, he carries himself as a man who knows he's going to win - no matter the cost. When the two are paired off against each other during the World Championships, Anakin is caught between wanting to prove himself and win the title, and not dethroning a man who has inspired him both on and off the piste. Hey, could you tell me a little about "Heart-shaped box" and "Overshot the target"? <3
Ofcc <33
So, "Overshot the target" is not about Strangers from Hell, but a trilogy called The Locked Tomb that's essentially just lesbian necromancers and sword women in space. So it's about Gideon and Harrowhark but a 1960s Summer Camp counselors AU in which they have the same enemies to lovers thing going on that they do in the novels but in a less fantastical setting.
Still not very fleshed out, but I want to make Gideon a muscular jock and Harrowhark a fencer (which is also them in canon but less fantastical xdd)
Probably won't be longer than a One-Shot (albeit a ~20k one xd)
"Heart-shaped box" however is a Strangers from Hell wip. It's a ghost-hunting au sort of?
In this AU Jongwoo moves to a countryside village to get away from his mom and girlfriend (who all live in Busan) bc said village is pretty close to a mysterious hotel that's sort of always been there and due to the surrounding landscape and its location being pretty isolated it's quite beloved by celebrities. But it's also supposedly haunted.
Now this is where another wip (the "herb doctor ghost" one) comes into play, bc I don't know how I want to connect the ideas. But essentially some centuries ago Moonjo was a really skilled doctor who worked a lot with herbs and could seemingly cure anything to the point that he had gotten a reputation. Namely that he was in kahoots with some demonic things, and that was he some sort of witch, which resulted in him being killed.
(I know that shamans or witches in historical Korea being killed was not that common, they were more likely just ostrasized or shunned according to brief research, but for the sake of this AU Moonjo was simply an outlier.)
So now, ~300 years later, Moonjo haunts the grounds on which he was killed, and the hotel that was built on top of them. And Jongwoo and new-found friends in the village decide to go on a little excursion to the hotel and see whether or not it's really haunted.
It might be too much for a one-shot, but maybe 2-3 long chapters like my Crimson Peak AU

Hey, Fencer, this is very random but: I saw that you mentioned Zatta recently and I was just thinking about her the other day! And that's because... is it me or there are a couple of things in the movie that are kiiinda similar to her harurinpics? Of course, I'm talking as someone who only have read the spoilers so I could be very wrong but, what do you think?
Haha the only reason I was thinking about her was because someone else already mentioned that similarity (which I hadn't noticed because it's been so long since I read her trilogy, even though it's sitting on my shelf).
Going by what others have said, there DOES seem to be quite a bit of similarity going on, so I hope wherever she is, she's feeling thrilled and vindicated XD
