Cartoon Network Friday Spotlight- Help! It’s the Hair Bear Bunch- “Keep Your Keeper”
Tumblr media
Would it shock you if I said that the 70′s were not a great period for Hanna-Barbera?
Creatively, at least. They did still rake in plenty of money as they were responsible for a solid percentage of animation on TV, but most of these shows weren’t very good. Help! It’s the Hair Bear Bunch is no exception, largely recycling their Yogi Bear cartoons and only shaking things up by adding a third bear into the process (although I guess Cindy was there too, but only occasionally) and giving them hippie-inspired outfits and lingo, just swap the park for a zoo. This, and the stories are stretched to a half hour when they can barely handle a third of that length.
Still, this seems to be one of the better remembered HB shows from the early 70′s if only by process of elimination. The characters would occasionally show up in fur suits with other, more iconic HB stars like Yogi and Fred Flintstone, and it would show up somewhat regularly for Boomerang on Cartoon Network’s 70′s blocks. I guess being a Yogi clone instead of a Scooby clone has it stand out a little.
This is the first episode but it’s already shaking things up, as Hair and his boys trick zoo keeper Mr. Peevly into leaving the zoo for his mental health, instead swapping him out for the no-nonsense Mr. Grunch. I think most humans know that when you replace a hardass boss, you’re far more likely to get a tougher supervisor than a looser one, and that’s the case here. So now the bears, in their invisible motorcycle and all, have to convince Peevly to come back. You can tell how this goes, and it has a couple of funny bits and strong voice work, but I don’t see this being an essential show or anything.

Postcards from Snagglepuss
Another autumn, another round of mayhem with Crazy Claws
BY THE SHORES OF ARTIFICIAL LAKE DELTON, WI: After a couple days or so at the Mall of America, including quite the mix of shopping and Huntington Bank Rotunda appearances, it was getting to be time for that annual autumnal sonata by the shores of the legendary Artificial Lake Delton outside Wisconsin Dells, hardly the sort of spot where Peter Potamus could be imagined doing a day's diving considering the murkiness of its waters--or so Crazy Claws, the legendary comedic observator of Wisconsin Dells, would phrase it.
"So murky, in fact," the witty wildcat noted over luncheon of chicken chili and flatbread ham and cheese sandwiches, "that I suggested to Peter's crew his trying Devils Lake by Baraboo. And just hope the swimmer's itch doesn't get anybody."
"So how did they manage?" Huckleberry Hound asked.
"At least," Crazy Claws rejoindered, "they came out as one."
Yet what really made Crazy Claws rather surprised was the ursine contingent represented by the Hair Bear Bunch as much as Emmy Lou and Jenny Lee ("Quite a setup, imagining some fun-hungry bears just off the summer mating run and a pair of lovesick Southern-type ursines most irresistable!"--Crazy Claws, observed over some lunch during the Wo-Zha-Wa celebration in Wisconsin Dells not long after our arrival).
"Though I've imagined," Emmy Lou remarked, "the notion of Peter Potamus maybe inviting us over the winter to join their diving crew for some diving escapades down by San Diego there--"
"I believe you mean La Jolla," added I, referring to the training camp and diving base of Peter Potamus' band of divers, and quite an interesting band they could get to be; Crazy Claws remarked that he had several of Peter's privately-circulated tomes of his diving exploits and otherwise general experiences in Polynesia Uncharted, and read them on occasion. "I think you might want to read them as well," Crazy Claws remarked to Emmy Lou and Jenny Lee.
"Glad to take up your invitation," Emmy Lou respondeth.
Mind you, the fall by Artificial Lake Delton's waters couldn't be a more fascinating sort of time ahead ...

Title: Help! It's the Hair Bear Bunch
Seasons: 1
Episodes: 16
Run Time: 30 Mins
Original Air Date: September 11, 1971 - January 8, 1972
Synopsis:
The series follows the Hair Bear Bunch, a group of three bear cousins who live at the Wonderland Zoo run by zoo director Mr. Peevly and zookeeper Lionel Botch. The three bears would occasionally escape their luxurious cage however, they always return to the cage before Mr. Peevly or Lionel Botch caught them. The bears had several motives for pranking and fooling Mr. Peevly and Mr. Botch, including trying to "improve their living conditions" and wanting to "embark on get-rich-quick schemes".
My Rating: 10/10
My Reasoning:
So I know this show kind of mimics other shows by Hanna Barbera such as Yogi Bear. However, I feel like it's more on the obscure side of their cartoons. I don't see many people talk about it or remember it.
I really like the characters, they're zany and lovable. I also like the voice actors too idk if that really matters to people though haha.
I think I've also made it pretty clear that I just enjoy the Hanna Barbera style of cartoons. I know a lot of them are similar but when it works, it works. So while this show is similar to a lot of their other ones it still retains a bit of uniqueness and remains enjoyable. Plus if you like the similar shows than I don't see why you wouldn't like this one too.
