The Legend of Nayuta: Boundless Trails
Though Japanese developer Nihon Falcom was long known by RPG fans for their work on Ys, Sorcerian and many popular RPGs, the Trails in the Sky series (known in Japanese as Sora no Kiseki) propelled them to great levels of popularity when they were released on the PSP. Refocusing their efforts from the PC to Sony’s portable platform, they began expanding the series even further, effectively creating their own Final Fantasy-style franchise. In branching out, the developers created The Legend of Nayuta: Boundless Trails, known as Nayuta no Kiseki in Japan, an action RPG that’s vastly different title from the other games in the series, even though it shares its namesake. It was originally released for the PSP in Japan only in 2012, but later received a worldwide English release for other platforms in 2023.

Here is an overview of the game, via NIS America:
About
Nayuta has always dreamed of exploring beyond the horizon of his island home. After a fateful encounter with a fairy by the name of Noi, he and his friends find themselves whisked away on an adventure through multiple worlds in order to stop an evil plot that has been set in motion.
Nayuta spends his days gazing up at the stars above his island home and wondering what lies beyond the horizon. Though people claim the sea they live on is flat and finite, Nayuta knows there must be more out there, just waiting to be discovered.
Occasionally, ruins and stars will fall from the sky over Nayuta’s home, offering what seem to be glimpses of other worlds. While exploring one such ruin, he and his friends save a small, fairy-like girl by the name of Noi. She tells Nayuta that something very important has been stolen from her and asks for his help in retrieving it.
It’s with this that Nayuta’s journey begins—one which will take him far beyond the confines of his island to experience new worlds and extraordinary discoveries!

2023 Game of the Year Countdown #8 The Legend of Nayuta: Boundless Trails Nintendo Switch, 2023 (PlayStation Portable, 2012)
Originally a Japan-only game from Falcom, NISA ported it when they also brought over the Crossbell games from the Trails series. While it does have the word “trails” in the title, this game is not canonically connected to the massive Trails universe, despite a few coy remarks from the CEO and president of Falcom.
That said, there are a few cool little crossovers that are fun for Trails fans to enjoy. Nayuta’s last name is the same as one of the main characters from the Cold Steel series, and the two also share an interest in astronomy. Creha, the silver haired girl from the Nayuta’s art, resembles the mysterious Grandmaster of Ouroboros of the Trails universe. It’s fun for fans and I liked it.
This is a fairly straightforward action RPG: you enter a level and whack everything that moves. There’s a decent amount of platforming as well, and the fact that it was originally a PSP game means that the controls are simple and easy to understand.
The music is perhaps a little bit underwhelming as far as Falcom releases go, but I did enjoy Remnant Island’s main theme, and the rest of the OST is decent background music.

As far as characters go, I love Noi. Maybe I’m a sucker for little helpful fairy characters (Razzly from Chrono Cross is an all time favorite of mine), but Noi has really cute little animations and voice lines that are really endearing. Plus, I love magic attacks and Noi is the one that actually fires all of them while Nayuta swings the sword.
I only found myself lost one or two times while traversing the levels, which is one of the issues I have with action RPGs. Sometimes, games make things too complex or hidden and that harms my enjoyment. Puzzles were sometimes long, but rarely difficult. I found the attack combos easy to figure out as well. It’s just a simple game to pick up and play in every aspect.
I’ve been waiting for this game for a few years, always expecting NISA to officially localize it at some point. If you see it on sale and like a more laid back RPG experience that still has some action combat, this could be a good one for you.

Gaming updates-
I have:
Played 7 hours of Chained Echoes & I'm enjoying it so far; love the pixel art, the turn based battle system & battle gauge, the fact that your HP & MP are fully restored after battle, and exploring the world map.
Beaten Ys Origin as Yunica; loved her character arc & enjoyed the combat and music
Bought Legend of Nayuta on sale, which I said I would get if I finished a playthrough of Ys Origin
Gonna do a third playthrough of Stray Gods before starting Nayuta. I want to try & help Medusa & maybe the Orpheus DLC again to take a little break from JRPGs
Also, I refuse to buy anymore video games until at least October. I did too much impulse buying this month due to stress.

The Legend of Nayuta: Boundless Trails (Nayuta no Kiseki) is the game that I wish Ys Seven was. And by extension Memories of Celceta, Lacriomosa of Dana, and Monstrum Nox, and probably also Nordics. Like, you could swap out the titular Nayuta for Adol Christin and the story would honestly probably make more sense, although the ramifications of this story on Ys's worldbuilding would be way bigger than any other game to date.
Which is to say: this is a rock-solid action RPG that hits all the same chemical receptors The Ark of Napishtim, The Oath in Felghana, and Ys Origin do, so if you're a fan of that brand of ARPG, check it out!

Playing Legend of Nayuta and its really fun and colorful, love the graphics and how sharp and clear everything is. Turns out Falcom makes good games other than the Ys series, who knew!

Review: The Legend of Nayuta: Boundless Trails
The Legend of Nayuta: Boundless Trails might show its age, but can still be a good time. The simplistic story might not be what Trails fans were hoping for, but works well enough for this title. The fast-paced gameplay is the main selling point as it’s reminiscent of other good action RPGs from this publisher, but the game mechanics are not without their own issues.
Check it out!

Games I am currently playing:
Chained Echoes- indie jrpg with retro and modern aesthetics (gorgrous pixel art)
Legend of Nayuta Boundless Trails- action JRPG with fun combat mechanics, lovely stage design inspired by the four seasons, and the cutest fairy partner (she can shoot magic as you fight)
Yugioh Rush Duel Dawn of The Battle Royale- a decent way to play Rush Duel in English by yourself. Grindy but fun so far.
