B) This one was a horror fic, I think. One of them brings the other back and it's happy for a little while and then the one who was resurrected gradually realizes that everyone around them is dead - basically the still-living partner had gone mad and was talking to corpses and hallucinating their responses. I remember it being not super long, well written, and disturbing, with a pretty sad ending.

Dude sounds unhinged enough, the flute playing is a thing they have in common (even if MXY's shitty aunt pulled him out of his flute classes a while ago due to "financial issues") and apparently people rumor he was gay for some Lightbringer guy.

Perfect.

So Mo Xuanyu prepares the ritual and... nothing happens. He's so angry and disillusioned he's about to take his own life in frustration because not even this worked, nothing does, he'll be bullied and abused forever - but then, out of black smoke, finally emerges nome other than the scary Yiling Patriarch, only he's a bit... disheveled? And has a white ribbon around one of his hands??

"What is it, kid?"

"...y-y-you're the Yiling Patriarch...?!"

"In the flesh... err, kind of. Anyway, what do you want with me?"

"In a moment, but, um, why did it take you so long to show up??"

Next day, Mo Xuanyu's bullies wait for him in front of the school gates ready to taunt him and beat him up again.

Except he rolls up in a black Lambo with two super buff looking guys that he calls "uncle Wei Ying" and "uncle Lan Zhan" that see him off to class - before uncle Wei Ying puts a very friendly hand on one of the bullies' shoulders and only slightly lowers his sunglasses so his red eyes shine.

"I'm a really nice guy so I'll warn you. Once. Mess with Mo Xuanyu again and I'll make sure it's the last thing you do." And he smiles a fanged smile. "Or I'll let my husband turn you into a memory. He's very good with his sword and I mean that literally."

He had seen his mother go through the worst heats without his father, screaming in vain for a man who didn’t give a shit about her, her cries so loud that they could be heard even through the soundproofed heat rooms. In an odd way, however, his father’s absence had been a good thing. For one, his mother had never been forced to mate with him more than a handful of time—she might call for him during her heats, but he was well aware she felt nothing but disdain for him outside of them—and more importantly, it was one of the reasons she was so close with her husband’s affair children. Was talking The Untamed the other day with @cerusee​ (what else) and got on the topic of... like... how frustratingly vague the timeline of events in the missing 13 years are

We do have a few timeline markers, like how Nie Huaisang says that he became Sect Leader (and thus Nie Mingjue must have died sometime recently) ten years before present, three years after WWX’s death. So there’s a pin in that.

But a lot of the other deaths are a lot more vague as to when they happened or even, strictly, in which order  they happened -- Nie Mingjue had to have died before Jin Guangshan, but when did Jin Guangshan die exactly? Was it before or after Jin Rusong died? Was it before or after Jin Rusong was born? When did JGY and Qin Su marry? (If they met when he saved her during the Sunshot Campaign and she fell in love with him then, did she just sort of sit on that for ten years?) When did Madam Jin die -- was it before or after her husband? When did MXY get brought to Jinlintai? The latter had to have been before JGS’ death, obviously, but did Jin Guangyao have an heir or not at the time that happened?

It doesn’t necessarily change the facts of what happened (murder, lots of) but it does change the nuances. Was JGY and Qin Su’s marriage straight up off the table until JGS died?  Did Madam Jin die when the last of her guardians was removed, or did JGS not even bother to shield her once she was no longer the mother of his heir?  Did Jin Guangyao finally decide that his father had to die because he sought to protect the future that, in the moment, he still believed Jin Rusong could have? Or did he finally snap when his father responded to the death of his only son by bringing in a replacement?

Fic ideas that keep me in a fog at inappropriate times throughout the day, Part 2B:

-Genderswap Jiang Yanli & Jiang Cheng:

-Jin Zixuan still dies at Qiongqi Path because WWX loses control of WN.  JC is suddenly an orphaned widow.  The call to gather at Nightless City-Madame Jin well enough aware of JC’s habits and terrified of what might happen actively shutting down Koi Tower and preventing JC from running away in the night as has become her habit.  JC ranting, raving, trying to find a way out, trying to care for her wailing infant, trying not to fall apart in grieving her husband-her husband who was stupid and arrogant and awkward but whom she has been married to for over three years now and she wasn’t in love with him but she did LOVE him and how could WWX kill her husband?

-and then, JGS returns from Nightless City, rumours of a massacre, and the YMJ bear another dead body back to JC for burial.  She gets second hand stories, all of which come to the same conclusion:  Jiang Yan died trying to save WWX and WWX killed him.

-JC numb from the pain, anger out of control, Zidian offered to her.  JC interrupts the planning of the Siege of the Burial Mounds and demands to lead the YMJ at the front.  A lot of men trying to ignore/deny her; Madam Jin, resigned but understanding what the alternative is, gives her support.  JC leads the siege with Zidian and Sandu and her brother’s guan in her hair.  WWX sees her coming up to fight him, sword drawn and face contorted with rage-whispers an apology that she shouldn’t be able to hear but still does before destroying the Yin Tiger Tally.  JC watches her last living brother torn apart by his own Fierce Corpses.

-The issue of YMJ after the death of its sect leader.  JC making a deal with JGS to take over the position of SL Jiang and raise her son (and the Jin heir) in Lotus Pier.  In exchange, she will agree to remarry his choice of groom to produce another heir for Lotus Pier.  JGS agrees and then promptly arranges a marriage between her and JGY because if he has two grandsons as sect heirs, that effectively means he has two sects under his control (he does not, but JC is fine with letting him think so as long as he supports her bid for SL)

-Madame Jin furious about the marriage, but supportive again of JC because of all her loved ones, her best friend’s daughter and mother of her grandson is one of two left to her.  JGY not sure what to do or say, so he just nods and bears it because it is his father’s will (there is an implication that at some point, JGY might be ordered to murder his new wife so JGS can enjoy owning YMJ through his son).  JC pushing back the marriage for two years but eventually consenting.  JGY and her bang once on the wedding night, and it’s enough for her to get pregnant again (Jiang Rusong, because I said so)

-JGS calls Mo Xuanyu to Koi Tower earlier and Madame Jin and Nie Mingjue still die in strange ways, merely months apart.  (Not JGY, because he’s busy trying to wrangle YMJ back into shape because his father wants it to be profitable when they take it from JC-Xue Yang invents some cursed object thingy that induces a qi deviation in NMJ a la his father and Wen Ruohan.  JGY delivers the object into NMJ’s hands, but I haven’t decided if he’s complicit in it or not).  MXY is left to XY and JGS’s tender mercies and spirals downwards even sooner than before.  He’s barely thirteen when he leaves Koi Tower and does the Soul-Sacrifice Spell (WWX brought back into the body of a-only-legally-considered-teenager who is just so tiny, frail, and messed up-there are five slashes on that arm for the Mo family, JGS, and XY)

-JL is eight, JRS is five, JC is Sandu Shengshou, JGY is Lianfang Zun, they have a daughter together as well-Little Jiang Yanli, LWJ is only five years out of seclusion, and NHS is still pulling the strings behind this whole plot.  WWX freaks out and runs away from Mo Village, running into Xiao Xingchen and A-Qing and slowly tries to figure out what happened while with them-NHS loses track of him for nearly one year (what is the time limit on those curse marks?) and in that much time, XY unhinges all the way and murders JGS, slaughters almost all of the Jin clan, and absconds with WN in the process.

-JGY has to go back to Lanling and takes JL with him-he will be regent while JL is still the heir.  Hijinks ensue as XXC, AQ, and WWX end up in Lotus Pier, begging for an audience with Jiang zongzhu.  WWX pretends to be MXY, but doesn’t realize that JC knew the boy fairly well as her brother-in-law.  She figures out it’s him, there’s a big fight that is interrupted by legions of fierce corpses attacking the town surrounding LP.  It’s XY, and he’s also got WN doing his bidding-but he doesn’t know that it’s WWX not MXY.  JC hands over Chenqing and WWX gets control back over WN, removes the nails, and destroys XY’s little fierce corpse army.

Mo Xuanyu’s grandfather was a rich man locally, but he was not blessed with a big family. As much as he wanted to, he never had a son, only two daughters. It was taboo to speak of the younger daughter, but anyhow, the elder daughter was the child of his wife, and her husband subsequently married into the family. The second daughter was known to be a beauty, but because she was the daughter of one of the family’s servants, the Mo family initially planned to casually marry her off. As fate would decree, she met the head of a renowned cultivation family when she was sixteen. He fell in love with her at first sight, and they met on the sly in the Mo Estate. A year later, she gave birth to a son, and this was Mo Xuanyu.

Initially, this matter was met with great derision by the Mo Family. However, this was a time where spiritual cultivation was highly regarded, and the cultivation clans, mysterious yet noble, were deemed to be anointed by the heavens. Coupled with the occasional assistance from the head of that cultivation family, the tides turned. Not only was the Mo Family proud of this, others were equally envious of them.

Unfortunately, the good fortune did not last for long, and that man soon lost interest in her. His visits to the Mo Estate decreased, and he never returned after Mo Xuanyu turned four.

Over the next few years, the Mo Family reverted to their scornful attitudes, added with a trace of disdainful pity. The second daughter was not resigned to her fate, and had held onto her belief that the man would not abandon his biological son. True enough, when Mo Xuanyu was fourteen, that man sent an entourage to the Mo Estate to officially welcome this young man into the family.

The second daughter was proud of this. Even though she could not accompany her son, she was no longer ashamed, and even boasted that her son would definitely become the head of the cultivation families, bringing honour to his ancestors. Hence, for the third time, the Mo Estate had a change of heart.

Yet, even before Mo Xuanyu had any achievements to speak of, he was sent back to the Mo Estate.

Ever since he returned to the Mo Estate, Mo Xuanyu faced a storm of ridicule. This time, there seemed to be no room for salvation. Unable to take the blow, the second daughter died, full of resentment.

There's a few things that always stand out to me when I read this. One is just how completely and thoroughly this fails to have any negative consequences for JGS whatsoever. He completely fucks up this sixteen-year-old girl's life, and what does it cost him? Absolutely nothing. He dallies when he feels like it, he leaves when he feels like it, and later on hey, you know what, bonus son to threaten JGY with! It's literally all upside for him. Truly the man never had to actually deal with the consequences of his actions in his entire fucking life, before JGY.

Another thing that stands out is just how thoroughly Second Lady Mo's position depends on other people's actions. She rises and falls in the esteem of her community purely based on how she and MXY are treated—by JGS, and then later, indeed, by JGY, when he expels MY. (I tend to think that MXY did indeed harass him, incidentally, for a few different reasons.) It is not in any way dependent on her; she has essentially no power. Even MXY has more than she does, and he has little enough.

Another thing is the initial plan for her, before she met JGS—"because she was the daughter of one of the family’s servants, the Mo family initially planned to casually marry her off." Of course she was sixteen, and it's very possible that even if they'd been planning a marriage she thought of as good she'd have been taken in by JGS anyway, and I do not mean to suggest she is in any way at fault, because she very much is not. But you can also see how this careless disposition of her future might have inclined her more to JGS, both in himself and as a possibility for her future.

I feel like all of this says a great deal about MS, JGY, and their own opportunities, especially about how few they actually had and how thoroughly they were fucked over by society. It's worth remembering that though Second Lady Mo's position is very bad, MS' was far far worse.

...also, since MXY was fourteen when they took him to Carp Tower, and that was in the year after Zixuan died, one fun fact is that as far as I can put together JGS meeting and dallying with Second Lady Mo would have happened when MS was still alive, and JGY was a kid, and they were waiting and hoping for JGS to come for them.

Due to MXYs summoning ritual not being 100% accurate Wei Wuxian is irreversibly immortal and unaging in his new body.

LWJ is not, so time passes, the inevitable happens.

WWX life is regarded as a tragic love story, a immortal who seeks out his beloved LWJs reincarnation each and every time via soul tracking and memory restoration talismans.

Cue modern day where openly immortal WWX is so damn tired of being told to go to therapy by almost every friend he makes.

He makes many promises to his husband in the last years on his life. He promised he would find him again, that he would love him again, that he would wait for him. He promised that in their next life Lan Wangji would become an immortal and that he would find a way to return his memories of their first life together. He promised that he would take care of himself until he found Lan Wangji again.

Wei Wuxian can remember how they would curl up together in their bed inside the house they built on the little farm they had grown together. He can recall how he would hold Lan Wangji close and whisper promises and vows into his white hair. Sometimes Lan Wangji was awake to hear them and sometimes he was asleep, but it never stopped Wei Wuxian from making his promises.

Then came the morning when Wei Wuxian woke up and Lan Wangji did not.

After that Wei Wuxian had no one to hold but it did not stop him from making his promises. He would kneel at his husbands grave all night making promises that he would find him again. He only slept in his bed when one of his children or grandchildren would come and remind him that Lan Wangji made him promise to take care of himself.

It got better after a while. He began to travel the world again and go on night hunts. No one said it to his face, but everyone knew he was searching for his husband.

LQr discusses with LXC Jiggis odd behavior/suspicion he’s posessed but doesn’t tell LXC his guess WRH asking MS if he has a written own schedule etc. but nope cz Jiggy memorizes everything so WRH has no idea what he has to do/what meetings etc are up (there were some in the notes he discarded) MS knows about surprise incest but LXC doesn’t so he doesn’t tell LXC thinking Jiggy would’ve preferred LXC doesn’t know, doesn’t tell him he’s been Jiggys lover.
