Hi I was wondering if you have any references for Tibetan jewelry or an archive on where to find them?
Like with Native American accessories, I would advise to be especially cautious when researching Tibetan jewelry, as many "new age"-types love slapping the "Tibetan" descriptor on their merch for a quick buck. With that said, these sites have decent archives:
Met Museum - The most reliable of the resources I've found. The Met is a well-respected museum that curates culturally significant items from around the world.
Culture-Cross - Perusing through the site, it seems that the people running it work very closely with local artisans for the benefit of the artisans' communities. They also cite location and materials used for each item as well.
Woven Souls - It cites location and materials used for each item, so it seems trustworthy enough. They also do a good job of distinguishing between the different cultures shown throughout the website.
Mahakala Fine Arts & Tribal Muse - Not going to lie, both websites give off strong new age vibes but the jewelry they're selling looks pretty similar to what the above sources showcase. Nonetheless, use discretion with these last two.

The Epic of Manas is a traditional epic poem dating to the 18th century but claimed by Kyrgyz tradition to be much older. Manas is said to be based on Bars Bek who was the first khagan of the Kyrgyz Khaganate. The plot of Manas revolves around a series of events that coincide with the history of the region in the 9th century, primarily the interaction of the Kyrgyz people with other Turkic and Chinese people.
The government of Kyrgyzstan celebrated the 1,000th anniversary of Manas in 1995. The eponymous hero of Manas and his Oirat enemy Joloy were first found written in a Persian manuscript dated to 1792–93.[1] In one of its dozens of iterations, the epic poem consists of approximately 500,000 lines.
The epic poem's age is unknowable, as it was transmitted orally without being recorded. However, historians have doubted the age claimed for it since the turn of the 20th century. The primary reason is that the events portrayed occurred in the 16th and 17th centuries. Central Asian historian Vasily Bartold claimed that Manas was an "absurd gallimaufry of pseudo-history,"[1] and Hatto remarks that Manas was
"compiled to glorify the Sufi sheikhs of Shirkent and Kasan ... [and] circumstances make it highly probable that... [Manas] is a late eighteenth-century interpolation."[2]
Changes were made in the delivery and textual representation[3] particularly the replacement of the tribal background of Manas. In the 19th century versions, Manas is the leader of the Nogay people, while in versions dating after 1920, Manas is a Kyrgyz and a leader of the Kyrgyz.[4] Use of the Manas for nation-building purposes, and the availability of printed historical variants, has similarly had an impact on the performance, content, and appreciation on the epic.[5]
Attempts have been made to connect modern Kyrgyz with the Yenisei Kirghiz, today claimed by Kyrgyzstan to be the ancestors of modern Kyrgyz. Kazakh ethnographer and historian Shokan Shinghisuly Walikhanuli was unable to find evidence of folk-memory during his extended research in 19th-century Kyrgyzstan (then part of the expanding Russian empire) nor has any been found since.[6]
While Kyrgyz historians consider it to be the longest epic poem in history,[7] the Sanskrit epic Mahabharata and the Tibetan Epic of King Gesar are both longer.[8] The distinction is in number of verses. Manas has more verses, though they are much shorter.
Manas is said to have been buried in the Ala-Too mountains in Talas Province, in northwestern Kyrgyzstan. A mausoleum some 40 km east of the town of Talas is believed to house his remains and is a popular destination for Kyrgyz travellers. Traditional Kyrgyz horsemanship games are held there every summer since 1995. An inscription on the mausoleum states, however, that it is dedicated to "...the most famous of women, Kenizek-Khatun, the daughter of the emir Abuka". Legend has it that Kanikey, Manas' widow, ordered this inscription in an effort to confuse her husband's enemies and prevent a defiling of his grave. The name of the building is "Manastin Khumbuzu" or "The Dome of Manas", and the date of its erection is unknown.

Something that really bothers me about current lefty discourse vis a vis “indigeneity” (which can really go into incredibly nebulous territory anyways) is that I’ve realised that a lot of people have an incredibly westernised culturally christian/noble savage mindset towards how they classify “who is indigenous”…ie that being indigenous means being poor, brown/black, not very technologically advanced, always having to be mainly farmers/hunter-gatherers, and (this last bit really grinds my gears) always, if not mostly, suffering some type of perpetual oppression at the hands of (white) outside actors who present a threat to their gentle land-based ways because their oppressors are invariably presented as modernised evil nature-hating racist-capitalist invaders.
How on earth do people (and by people I mean mostly westerners but this applies to basically anyone ig) think this works when discussing countries like india? China? Regions like the Middle East? Do you think many will understand or even agree with Middle Eastern ethnoreligious minorities saying that arabisation was and still is detrimental to their communities when I still remember a post here where an Arab (or at least heavily arabised) girl mocked an amazigh girl as an illiterate sheep herder whose education was apparently owed to arabs teaching her people out of their lowly ways? When tankies (ofc they had to be involved) say, without batting an eye, that han chinese absolutely had to invade and annex Tibet because the Tibetans were all mindless violent savages who needed to be educated out of their evil backwardness into a higher standard of living and thinking? When land back is absolutely considered an american concept and, if ever (which is rarely) learned about in Latin America, summarily dismissed out of hand? When the balkans and baltics have historically been the subjects of constant wars and land grabs, and their skin colour has actually not protected them from their far more powerful imperial neighbours? Indonesia in the 60s…?
Idk whether to call this type of mindset Pocahontas syndrome or whatever, but i think it fits as to explaining how a lot of people cannot seem to shake this incredibly wrong idea of indigeneity being defined by a simplistic matrix of oppressor/oppressed—villain/defenceless victim; indigenous people are always acted upon/have to react to circumstances outside their control instead of actually being seen as possessing their own standards and autonomy. I think this also ties into how even people who consider themselves reasonably well educated and definitely not racist immediately reaching for the damn callipers and wanting to discuss “definitions” that veer well into the phrenological when confronted with people outside that definition such as Caucasians (Chechens, Ingush, Dagestani…). Never mind that native Americans in the US have had to clarify that blood quantum is racist and the method they have set up as the valid determinator is recognised tribal enrolment…
Am i an expert on this topic? Lmao no. But I do think that I’m at least well enough aware to be appalled when a lot of “discussions” today can be boiled down to ignorant people saying “which one of them is the evil john smith vs the innocent Pocahontas in this situation?”

Radical Ideas
I always laugh when people say that someone is their "brother" or "sister" due to their ethnicity and for lack of a better term "race". It's so dumb because one, just because you share a language and a history does not make you somehow kindred and have inviolable bonds. I have more in common with people from the Midwest and the South than I do from my ancestral lands, the majority being Germany, Ireland and the British Isles in general.
The people who are of Slavic descent in These United States might share a common tongue with their distant relatives but not much else, maybe some religious and cultural practices but besides that. Even Hispanics and Latinos in the US who have family in their mother country, maybe one or two generations removed are different than how they would have been twenty, thirty years ago.
It's just weird that people become so insecure and fall into tribalism when it does not really benefit them or others to be like this. It really does not to try to be in one way in the home and one way in public, accept that you're going to both loose and gain traits from cultural exchange, it's a part of human culture that has been happening since ever. As long as humans have existed, cultural exchange and really change has existed. Trying to conserve something that simply doesn't exist or to propagate it, is extremely dumb.
For example, it's weird to have all African Americans embrace each other as one big "family" not only because they often and conveniently exclude groups like the North Africans like Egyptians and the Copts since they're "just Arabs" but, the collective history of all of these various cultures is so vast and complex that someone from Chad, another from Nigeria and finally someone from Ethiopia don't really have a baseline except, they're all from the African Continent. Their: culture, religion, languages and so much more are so distinct, that they're cousins in a general sense not siblings. Sure, geographic regions like how Europe has geographic regions (the Nords, Francs, Anglos, Slavs of all sorts) but, not this weird cope of a unified identity (I mean if the Island of England has England, Scotland, Wales and the Cornish, plus the fact that no one in England can really decide where the North starts and the South ends there's no way you have larger populations of larger land masses agreeing on a singular unified identity).
I believe this to be both a consequence of diaspora of various minorities and also a certain insecurity when attempting to affirm their own unique cultural identity. For example, I have a friend who's a Filipino and when he was living in Westminster, California (which is where a bunch of Asians of all stripes have settled initially as refugees) now have amalgamated into this weird monoidentity buuut, it's unique only to Westminster, it does not exist in the larger US or even the international community. When I lived in the Twin Cities, I worked at the postal service and again the Twin Cities are a big place for the relocation of refugees and asylum seekers. But, the Hmong stuck with the Hmong, the Ethiopians with the Ethiopians, Tibetans with Tibetans, ect. This was with the first and second generation and probably with the third generation things start to break down and they will integrate with the general population of the area, it's simple ethnographic trends. The only way you prevent this is with groups like the Amish where they simply refuse to integrate or they're just stuck in a relatively isolated area. In a rapidly connecting world people are going to adapt and you can't just set up these arbitrary barriers to make yourself feel special, then you'd be no better than those weird people wanting an ethnostate.

The kingdom of women: the society where men are never the boss
Tumblr media
It’s a place where women rule, marriage doesn’t exist and everything follows the maternal bloodline. But is it as good for women as it sounds – and how long can it last?
This progressive, feminist world – or anachronistic matriarchy, as skewed as any patriarchal society, depending on your viewpoint – exists in a lush valley in Yunnan, south-west China, in the far eastern foothills of the Himalayas. An ancient tribal community of Tibetan Buddhists called the Mosuo, they live in a surprisingly modern way: women are treated as equal, if not superior, to men; both have as many, or as few, sexual partners as they like, free from judgment; and extended families bring up the children and care for the elderly. But is it as utopian as it seems? And how much longer can it survive?

JTTW Great Peng Religious Statue
Chapters 74 to 77 of Journey to the West (Xiyouji, 西遊記, 1592) feature a powerful bird demon called the “Peng of Ten Thousand Cloudy Miles” (Yuncheng wanli peng, 雲程萬里鵬). He is portrayed as an ancient, halberd-wielding monster and a spiritual uncle of the Buddha. He comes to rule his own country and later teams up with two escaped Buddhist animal spirits to cause havoc on earth. The Great Peng is so strong that his nephew, the Enlightened One, has to personally intervene to trap this matchless evil in a position above his throne (this references South Asian Hindo-Buddhist architectural elements that jumped to Tibetan Buddhist religious iconography). The monster submits but stubbornly refuses to stop eating meat, showing that even the Buddha cannot fully tame him. In the end, the Enlightened One placates the Great Peng by offering him willing human sacrifices from among his countless followers.
What's interesting is that a later book titled The Complete Telling of the Biography of Yue (Shuo Yue quanzhuan, 說岳全傳, 1684), an embellished chronicle of famed Song dynasty loyalist and general Yue Fei (岳飛; 1103-1142), portrays him as a reincarnation of this bird demon-turned-Buddhist guardian. This connection is likely based on Yue's historical "courtesy name", Pengju (鵬舉). In the novel, the “Great Peng, the Golden-Winged King of Illumination'' (Dapeng jinchi mingwang, 大鵬金翅明王) becomes enraged when a bat spirit farts during the Buddha's sermon, leading him to jump down from his perch and mercilessly kill the offender. The Enlightened One promptly exiles him to the world below to be reborn as Yue Fei. But this is actually a preordained countermeasure against a red dragon sent by the Jade Emperor to punish the Chinese Emperor in the form of a tribal leader who comes to invade northern China. This naturally plays on the known animosity between birds of prey and snakes (e.g. Garuda vs Nagas).
Yue Fei came to be worshiped in Chinese folk religion as a Daoist protector deity. He has temples (or at least a statue therein) dedicated to him throughout the Chinese diaspora, but they are most concentrated in China and Taiwan. This leads me to an interesting religious statue that I recently purchased. Labeled "Marshal Yue Fei, the Great Peng" (Dapeng Yue Fei yuanshuai, 大鵬岳飛元帥), it portrays the general astride his former incarnation. I've never seen a statue such as this, nor have any of my friends who are in the know. It appears to be quite rare.
Now I can say that I own a religious statue of the most powerful demons in Journey to the West!!! [INSERT EVIL LAUGHTER]

Mahayana, Theravada and Zen
There is a lot of confusion in the West about Buddhism. Many think it is is a ‘one big tent religion’ in where what is said in the Pali Suttas goes for Zen as well. Many westerners ignorantly bounce around the Pali Suttas and the Mahayana sutras without realizing that these are two distinct schools of Buddhism that have radically different philosophical views and religious direction.
Here is a list of the differences.
Mahayanism is a school of Buddhism that is said to develop around the 1st century and was considered at that time as the completion of the bhikkhu training for Full Enlightenment. I posted a while back a research article that during the Chinese pilgrimages to South Asia, the Theravada and Mahayana monks lived in the same temples, ate the same foods, slept in the same halls. Though when the pilgrimages stopped around the 6th century, Mahayanism became the dominate sectarian teaching in China, even creating its own version of the Vinaya over time to suit the region and geography.
Zen (Ch’an) is a subset branch of Mahayanism and in the past did have its own specially schools and temples. Today in China, Ch’an and Pureland Buddhism are fully integrated to form Chinese Mahayanism.
Tibetan religion is Mahayanism with the four distinct schools, namely Nyingma (c. 8th century), Kagyu (11th century), Sakya (1073), and Gelug (1409). Dzogchen, the Tibetan Zen school is part of the  Nyingma school, and this is the Padmasambhava Guru rinpoche teachings.
Zen absolutely considers itself a part of the Mahayana family. Does this mean you have to join a religion to study Zen? Absolutely not. Just as people can study the Christian Bible without having to be a Christian (believer), people study Zen without being religious – this however is not to imply that Zen or Christianity is non-religious.
Buddhism does not deny the existence of any gods, though does deny that they play any special role. Buddhism and Zen does engage in Filial Piety (honoring of the ancestors of the Dharma) yet rejects Religious piety in that one has to go to a church or attain certain rites or perform any particular ceremony. This is different than Western Religious views that create tribalism around a genealogy of a people, later around a dogmatic beliefs, and finally around favoritism of theologians (Calvinism for example).
To say that Zen is not Religious is a mistaken view, though to say that Zen is different than Western religious views is true. Zen certainly has its theologians, and those theologians do have a following that  forms reverent tribes around chosen favorite theologians (Lately Dogenism for example, or earlier Rinzai).
