You know Steve, you're not very hard to figure, only at times. Sometimes I know exactly what you're going to say. Most of the time. The other times... the other times, you're just a stinker.

Lauren Bacall, To Have and Have Not, 1944
"Look at that face of hers. There you’ve got the map of Middle Europe slung across those high cheekbones and wide green eyes…She’s a honey blonde…She’s got a model’s figure, square shoulders, and a kid’s waist. "
-Humphrey Bogart, 1953

From The Complete Works of Piers Q MacBean, volume 8, Despatches From a Dark Cupboard (or Closet)
The memories that fill this dark cupboard (or closet) are sometimes tantalisingly incomplete. For instance, I cannot recall on what pretext I visited Humphrey Bogart at his home in Beverly Hills. I remember vividly, though, being met at the door by the slim figure of his latest wife, who was even more striking in person than on the screen. She led me to a back room, in which I found the actor sitting by a small table, on which were a bottle of Scotch whisky and a half-full glass. The air was thick with cigarette smoke.
"I'll leave you two men alone," said my hostess. "If you need me, just whistle. You do know how to whistle, don't you?"
I hastily assured her that I knew how to whistle, and she left, closing the door behind her.
I approached her husband with a little trepidation. He barely looked up as I reached his side, but waved me off-handedly to a nearby chair, picked up his glass and drained it. We sat in silence a moment longer, then came that unmistakable voice, with its slight speech impediment. "Listen to this," he said, and rose from his seat.
Placing a hand on his middle, he bowed stiffly from the waist, then announced: "The yellow-rumped warbler." Pursing his lips, he produced a series of musical warbles. Pausing for breath, he next introduced "The spotted towhee," and immediately began to make a rich buzzing sound. Next came the robin, which he mimicked with such detailed skill that I could distinguish it as the American robin, not the European species.
"Here's a tricky one," he said with that well-known grin of his. "The mockingbird. Some people just impersonate some other birds, but I do the proper mockingbird's version." He became indignant. "And then there's some punks put their head in a bucket for the resonance. Not me, not Bogie! It comes from here." He clapped himself on the chest, which caused a paroxysm of coughs. Recovering swiftly, he embarked on a new series of bird calls, starting with the black-capped chickadee: chicka-dee-dee-dee. From then on, the succession of chatterings, trills and melodic songs flowed out of him in an unbroken stream that seemed to go on for hours, until my head began to swim.
Then, just as he had begun the loud laughing song of the Northern Flicker, he broke off and began to cough again. Falling back into his chair, he reached for a cigarette and lit it, while waving me towards the door. "Call again," he gasped between coughs. "Next time, we'll do the barnyard animals."
I made my way out. As I crossed the hall, I passed Mrs Bogart. "Bird calls?" she asked sympathetically. I nodded weakly. "Next time, whistle."
