Summer Nights With Toby

Toby is a man of simple pleasures

He hates being cooped up inside

Toby's car is definitely a hybrid, a 96/97/98/2000 Toyota Corolla, in primer gray

His plans become apparent when you see the gleaming and twinkling lights of the boardwalk that's in a nearby town on a huge lake

His eyes light up as you two hit the boards, taking in all the booths, rides and lights

He wins you a few prizes, his superior aim and throwing skills coming in handy with the rigged carnival games

The booth vendors are pissed and Toby knows it, smiling widely as they begrudgingly hand over whatever prize you've picked out

As the two of you are walking along, Toby's attention is grabbed by a small one story shack

There aren't any signs or lights, nothing to denote what's in there

But he pulls you straight to it

Pushing through the door, Toby lets out an excited "I knew it!"

Inside the small building is a little casino, smelling of corn dogs, cigarettes, and oil

Not much, just a roulette table, a few slot machines, and some tables with some grumpy looking old men hunched over cards

But immediately Toby is regaling you with stories of how Millie (Lyra) used to take him to this shop when he would walk to meet her after school

The shop was very much like this one:

Penny bet roulette where you have to get the attendant to come spin and drop the ball

"Millie would say it was important for me to l-learn to let go. To puh-place my bet and see the outcome through, n-no matter what the result was."

Toby guides you over to a slot machine and puts a penny into the coin slot, pulling the arm almost simultaneously

After a few more pulls, the machine produces a token for $20

Toby cashes the token in, pocketing $15 and taking $5 over to the poker tables

The men silently make room for him at the table, shoving over until there was enough room for the chair one of the men pulled over from against the wall

Toby joins them after a new games starts, intently studying his cards as they're dealt to him.

In short order, Toby wipes the table with the other men and has a sizeable pile of tokens, which he cashes in after folding three games later

It seems Toby has a head for numbers and has been counting the cards, toying with the other men to get them to raise their bets

After cashing in those tokens, Toby asks if you're ready to explore some more, maybe grab a bite to eat

For someone who started this date near broke, Toby won enough money for a good, greasy meal for two, a few rides, and gas for his car

Thankfully the night is mild, the water has cooled the air off from the days heat

So you and Toby are unrushed as you stroll past the food trucks, deciding on a meal

You get an order for two of your favorite. Toby is like a garbage disposal, not picky at all.

But he talks with you and keeps you smiling as you eat your food, listening to stories from your work week, and sharing the shenanigans that have been happening at camp with his co workers.

Next are the rides

There aren't any crazy ones, this is only a lakeside carnival

But you two go on the tilt-a-whirl, the fun house, and the tunnel of love

Toby really turns on the romance when in the tunnel of love

Holding you close and whispering sweet nothings in your ear

It's very nice and sweet, a break from the extremes of Toby's personality

Toby follows this up by ushering you directly to the Ferris wheel, secretively chatting with the operator before your gondola comes around

Taking your seats, Toby makes sure you're once again safely buckled in

And then with a scooping motion, you and Toby start slowly rising into the air

The lights from the carnival twinkle all around you as Toby once again pulls you close, snugging you in against his chest and under his arm

As your gondola reaches the top, the Ferris wheel stops, rocking gently with slow momentum for a few moments after.

You're distracted by Toby instead though. He looks so nice in the moonlight, a content half grin curling his scarred lips as he toys with your hair while looking out expectantly into the night

With a POP!CRACKLE a violet explosion in the sky

Toby looks pleased and you can tell he's pulled some strings somewhere

"Darry from work" he replies to your questioning look
