Learning The Ropes - Casey Matthews/Rosalita Sanchez, Kate Riley/Rhonda LeBeck

A/N: Day 22 of @yeehawgust and we're getting some more @thetremorssaga up in here.

Kate Riley and Rhonda LeBeck had been working with Casey Matthews ever since she moved to Perfection, so when Casey asked if they minded her bringing in a friend to ‘learn the ropes’ with them, they had agreed easily. Now, with Rosalita listening and learning every day, Kate found herself smirking as she joined Rhonda at the tent edge with a fresh can of cola from the cooler they had brought with them. “She seems happy…” “Young love.” Rhonda murmurs, leaning closer. “She’s a quick learner too…. Look at her.” Rosalita is coated in a fairly thick coat of dust and grime, mostly sand, smiling as she helps Casey settle the last of their set up of wires and sensors. They’d worked around El Blanco, selecting a safe area of land just outside Burt’s land, a place they all knew El Blanco ignored. Learning the ropes had lead to Rosalita lending them a hand and, much as neither Kate or Rhonda would ask, charming Casey into loving her all the more.

Burt Gummer is a gun enthusiast and survivalist. He moved to Perfection, Nevada due to its isolation. It turned against him during the first Graboid resurgence. He survived and became an expert in the species--hunting and exterminating all but the sterile El Blanco wherever they appeared (and as long as they covered his ammunition and armaments fees). He hit a particularly rough spot when Graboids returned to Perfection--leading to the (unnecessary) destruction of his first underground bunker. He largely makes ends meet by giving survival training to tourists and hunting strange beasts when asked to by the government.

An Ex-Nascar driver and Owner of Desert Jacks Tours, Tyler is one of the newest arivals to Perfection, setting himself up as a tourguide. He often finds himself assisting Burt in disposing of the strange beasts that rise up in the valley (thanks to an old Eugenics Wars-era lab being hidden there).

Daughter of the late Walter Chang (who coined the name "Graboid"), she has inherited his store and has taken to it like a fish to water. She truly enjoys entrepreneurial endeavors and runs her business quite well. Unfortunately, being the owner of the general store of Perfection, it's often ground zero for the critters that pop out, which is always bad for business. She got to name the third stage in the live cycle: Ass-Blasters.

To keep an eye on the 'endangered species' of Perfection (El Blanco), the government sent Twitchle. He's and the locals (even the stubborn Burt) have devloped a mutual-tolerance of each other.

The Native American ranch hand at Rosilita's. He is another recent immigrant to Perfection, and like the others, has grown to love the wide-open desert valley.

Possibly the only surviving scientist from the eugenic-wars lab, he now wanders the desert, living off the land and only occasionally dropping by the general store. He once had a companion from his lab-days: Project 4-12. Unfortunately, it had to be destroyed when the strange beast went wild and attacked both him and the locals of Perfection.

The locals have a lot to say about Melvin, none of it is good, or even repeatable in decent conversion. Melvin want to turn Perfection into a pre-fab condo area, but can't develop as long as an endangered species (El Blanco) remains there. He's tried several times to circumvent this problem, but so far he's failed in his plans, but has yet to meet his end at El Blanco's jaws.

Larry Norvel is a paranormal enthusiast who found his way to perfection in the wake of the lab-escapees and chemical spills that occurred, unleashing a torrent of mutant and altered beasts. He seeks to put together a website detailing the weirdness of Perfection, Nevada.

When Weird US was published, he was one of the consultants for the Nevada section.

Okay, the more I think about it, I think the main reason why I wasn’t that impressed with “Alien Romulus” was how safe it felt. It didn’t hurt the franchise, but I felt like I could live without it. It doesn’t really add anything to the Alien series, apart from Xeno-Baby. Also, it felt like Fede Alvarez just redid the first movie but with better special effects. That’s technically not a bad thing, but I was definitely thinking to myself in the theater that the movie felt lacking in substance.

And sure, the scares may be well done, but it’s also nothing new. I’m pretty sure I’ve seen the, “We have to stay quiet or else the monsters will hear us” shtick in like 10 other horror movies. Also, lowering the temperature so that the monsters can’t see you is straight up Tremors 2. Once again, just because it’s cliched doesn’t mean it’s bad. But it does make you feel like you’ve seen this shit already.

If I had to make a comparison to a similar series, it’s the “Predators” (2010) of the Alien franchise. Not bad, not great, doesn’t really add much to the series…it’s just very safe and passable.

(EDIT: I take back what I said about Xeno-Baby. Even that’s not new since that’s just the Newborn from Alien Resurrection)

Rediscovered my love for tremors today after stumbling apon the forgotten TV show that took place after the third movie, I love tremors and I was saddened to learn about two years ago they had plans for a new TV series but it was cancelled by the SYFI channel the day before airing. And after the shrieker island movie burt gummer the character died in the movie because the actor was getting too old to play burt so he had his character go out like a badass.

Dust Devil Drama - Rosalita Sanchez/Casey Matthews

“What the f….” “Dust Devil, get inside.” Rosalita’s still not sure what makes her like Casey so much but she can’t help feeling a little protective of the other woman, tugging her inside the barn and shutting the door firmly before locking it and blocking it completely up. “This is going to suck…” Casey sighs and follows Rosalita to the nearest hay bales, happy enough to sit by Rosalita’s side even as the dust devil blows past, rattling the doors sharply enough that Casey can’t help sinking a little closer to Rosalita, nervous instantly. The door nearest them, thankfully, holds. The other door shudders and, when the dust devil leaves, falls completely. “That was… close.”

My only complaint about the Tremors movies (we're pretending the 6th one doesn't exist because it's racist misogynistic shittily written garbage) is that they never deescalated from the subspecies(?) that evolved to leap. That made sense for that specific one in that environment. It doesn't make sense for all the other ones in different environments to do that. It wasn't a learned behavior, it was an evolved behavior designed to suit that environment.
