Why's Jeverus and Prongsfoot so rare as James centric enemies to lovers and friends to lovers ships? I never thought about it till now.
Community, timing, style of shipping.
Prongsfoot got a lot of its framework in book 5, two and a half years after book 4, where Wolfstar was already locked in (after being so strongly established in book 3). James was dead and had a wife already, while Wolfstar was alive, single, and living together. Even upon reading in full in current day, Wolfstar is going to be the first thing for one to react to as the first pair of adult men the same age we're meant to root for.
Jeverus didn't lock in until book 7, at the very end, where we learn the bullying was sexual jealousy and there was a mutual obsession at play here. Snape's involvement in Lily gave him guaranteed proximity to James, who is fixated on him because he's standing next to Lily and is ugly about it...You know. Also, most fans start out strongly disliking Snape, and it's a crapshoot on whether the procession of the story is enough to change their minds. For people who do like Snape, their affection often begins because they find the bullying so horrible, so they're not going to give him to James. The 3rd faction is Alan Rickman fans, who prefer to use a character who functions as reader insert to romance him as their own personal Heathcliff.
So the fandom is rapidly approaching 30 years old. Often, you'll find a fandom has common ships where everyone just ships it out of a compulsive need to participate with others. Even after the tendency dies down and other ships gain prominence, you'll still see vestigial trends. Wolfstar gained fucking immortality. Why would you break up Wolfstar and Jily, the Best Ships? They're all paired up!
Do you remember ship wars? Because I remember ship wars. Your cast being neatly paired up used to be best case scenario. Nowadays people don't even use "OTP".
Not to mention they're teenagers and Harry is born a mere 3 years post-grad, so a lot of the most popular enemies to lovers tropes have almost no room to breathe. Sooooo much Drarry is post-war, I remember being on FFnet before the books finished coming out and it was still so much post-war. In the MIDDLE of a war? When James is married weirdly young? Doth our angel CHEAT? IN A WAR?
It's important, then, that Jegulus was a bunch of brand new fans taking the piss. There became a community of taking the piss. Good fics happened. They chatted about their joke fic getting good fics. Everyone wants to be in on the joke. Community is formed. When asked "what's a good gay ship for my boy James", their instinctive reaction will be "well I'm in on this little joke..." I like to lurk on Marauders fandom like an anthropologist and they're doing this exact process to Gilderat right now.
Not to mention Regulus characterization is reconstructed to fit the circumstances; he's a quiet black cat softboy who's beautifully tortured, and he's often presented as a brief relationship James has before Lily, as Lily doesn't date him until like, 6th/7th year, so we got a cross-section of "best friend's brother" trope, black cat/golden retriever, tortured Slytherin boy, sports rivals (seeker/chaser), forbidden love, breakup angst, Regulus isn't related to Lily at all so their wires don't get crossed, and Regulus isn't publicly a friend of James so it's actually possible to cleanly break them up so Jily can function.
Most importantly, people actually like Regulus, and Regulus is 1000x more susceptible to Draco in Leather Pants characterization than Snape, who's glazing trends towards the gothic and byronic, not the dark academia sensitive flower having a moral crisis. It's a very lovingly set playground, and steals attributes from other ships to make a more generically appealing whole vs the other two James dynamics going on here. People accuse Regulus of stealing Snape's personality, but in reality he is stealing a truly galling amount of Sirius' tropes (everything BUT his personality), and honestly I think people underestimate the dramatic potential of Regulus being the one malding over James dating the brother who he hadn't been able to connect with, because the malding is utterly hopeless, and the tragedy hurts worse, and the Wolfstar hits like a home run when Lupin is the dick grayson or whatever the hell that guy from ATYD's name was in this relationship picking up the pieces.
Can I say bad taste? I'll also say bad taste.

Its interesting to see how prevalent "no true scottsman" ideas are among the progressive left. Like, feminism has long since had major issues with racism and transphobia. When grappling with this people overwhelmingly react by trying to cast out individuals from their communities, pay lip service to the groups in question, and make grand sweeping statements about how these ideas dont belong in feminism. While to some extent I do agree, these ideas shouldn't have a place among feminism, we cannot simply declare it so. They do have a place in feminism, and pretty much always have. We have to actively contend with racism and transphobia within feminist movements and ideology. We have to watch ourselves not to reify gender or enforce racialized ideas of beauty. We cannot simply declare something not a part of our communities, we must investigate what causes it to arise in the first place. We have to struggle against these parts of the community, and to do that we have to recognize them as such. Another area I see this is among "leftists" speaking out against ableism. "Leftism" is not really a coherent political framework and due to this it has no consistent line regarding ableism, it is largely incapable of truly addressing it. As such, many leftists are deeply ableist. Instead of looking to address this, to struggle against ableism, to systemitize a response to ableism, leftists will post memes about "leftism peoples bodies when they talk to a person with [disability]", and I must say I am sympathetic to these memes, they speak to a real experience of bigotry, but unfortunately the problem is not leftism leaving anyones body, the problem is a category so vague as "leftism" allows for ableism to exist within it largely unchallenged. If people wish to stick with leftism as a political ideology (though lets be real it is more of a political identity) they must struggle against these trends and devise a response, a strategy to tackle intra-leftist bigotry. Its one of those things that you start to see everywhere once you look for it. I'd highly encourage others to look towards ways to struggle against these reactionary trends rather than simply denouncing them verbally.

Homeland by Richard Beck – how 9/11 changed the US for ever
Journalist Beck argues that the war on terror made America vastly more authoritarian, paving the way for Trump
Almost a quarter of a century on, is the US still being shaped by 9/11? Richard Beck thinks so, despite all the other shocking and pivotal events there since the 2001 attacks, from the financial crisis to the twin election victories of Donald Trump. In this long, ambitious book, which aims to be an “alternative national history”, encompassing politics, popular culture, consumerism, policing, the use of public spaces and even trends in parenting, Beck argues that 9/11 turned the US into a more aggressive, angry and anxious place, with Trump’s ascendancy only one of the consequences.
Beck depicts the “war on terror” that his country launched in response to al-Qaida’s surprise assault as a continuing, almost limitless military operation, which in its first two decades alone caused “900,000 deaths”, including those of “nearly 400,000 civilians”. His account of interventions and atrocities in countries such as Iraq, Yemen and Afghanistan is clear and powerful, switching smoothly between strategic objectives and individual victims, yet much of it will be familiar to anyone who even casually follows US foreign policy.
The book is more original when it lays out the war’s less obviously lethal but profoundly malign effect on America itself. A presidency with massively expanded powers; increased surveillance of US citizens; innocent people arrested and detained on vague “national security” grounds; a greater readiness to use torture; and the thickening of the Mexican border into a militarised zone a hundred miles deep – in these and many other ways, the American state has become more authoritarian and intolerant since 9/11. Meanwhile, US society, Beck says, has followed a similar path, making it increasingly difficult for Muslims and other minorities considered suspicious to lead full political lives, or even appear safely in public during the frequent periods of mass panic about terrorism or triumphalism about its supposed vanquishing.
From all this bleak, carefully collated evidence, Beck draws a striking and timely conclusion: “If September 11 had not occurred, Donald Trump could never have become president.” Nor, the book suggests, could he rule in such a draconian and crudely nationalistic manner while retaining so much public support. The desire for revenge after the horror and humiliation of 9/11, conscious or unconscious, remains so huge that it will take many more years to sate. Superpowers that considered themselves wronged do not forget.
George W Bush, a reckless rightwing Republican by the standards of his day, if not now, was president when 9/11 happened, and reacted with characteristic illiberalism and overconfidence, establishing much of the secretive bureaucracy and elastic legal framework of the “war on terror”, and disastrously invading Afghanistan and Iraq. Then, the much more revered Barack Obama – who turns out to be one of Beck’s main targets – stealthily continued the war, at times appearing to be winding it down with troop withdrawals and conciliatory speeches, while in reality replacing Bush’s macho “shock and awe” displays of force with drone strikes and other assassinations. On the war’s home front, Beck points out, Obama also “tripled the budget” of the Department of Homeland Security’s infamously tough immigration and customs enforcement agency, “deported some three million people”, and further blurred the line between immigrants and terrorists in the public mind.
Why did a supposedly liberal president, who had opposed the Iraq war as a state senator, end up continuing the “war on terror”? For Beck, there is a grand, systemic explanation for the militarism of every US government since 9/11. “With the United States unable to muster the economic strength to maintain [its] hegemony around the world,” he writes, “militarism is the next best option for managing discontents abroad and at home.” In other words, the “war on terror” has never really been about terrorism, but about maintaining America’s global supremacy and internal status quo, threatened not just by radical Islamism but the rise of other superpowers, and growing domestic and foreign discontent with the US economic model.
It’s a compelling thesis. Yet Beck doesn’t connect its many elements closely enough to make it absolutely convincing. His book seems to want to be both a rigorous geopolitical analysis in the style of New Left Review and a work of novelistic nonfiction, informed by the doomy American panoramas of Don DeLillo. In places, he pulls off this tricky fusion, and the pages hum with unsettling facts and conclusions. But elsewhere the book is too broad-brush.
For all its epic sweep, sometimes plunging far back into America’s violent history, the account also omits at least one important precursor to the “war on terror” era. Ronald Reagan’s 1980s presidency, shortly after the US defeat in Vietnam, was also driven by vengeance and intense nationalism, and featured an ever-expanding and authoritarian government campaign against a supposedly vast global threat, the “war on drugs”.
Reagan is now widely remembered as a charming old conservative, rather than a ruthless enforcer of American privilege. This bold and outspoken book, despite its flaws, could help ensure that the domineering ways of the post-9/11 presidents are better understood.

Do you think Tommy and Lizzie storyline in the show intended for a slow burn?
As in, was the S5 and S6 relationship intended from S1 or S2? No, I didn’t think so.
But do I think who they are together in S5 and S6 is consistent and a feasible outcome based on all seasons worth of characterisation? Yep, with some minor reservations about Lizzie - I felt she had some giant leaps in characterisation between seasons that are difficult to swallow without assuming she had big experiences off screen. But her focus on Tommy was always there so the hmmm moment is more about Lizzie herself than about Lizzie x Tommy being conceivable or not.
Each season of PB is so different in terms of focus and plot style and theming, and each character is shown with a different slice/take on who they are, I imagined a writing approach roughly like ‘what lens or frame or plot type do we want to show/explore this season? What if Tommy’s married this season? What if he’s drug addicted this season? Let’s throw these developed characters in together into X type of situation and see how they react this time around.’ But with a very strong focus on what the characters experienced prior so the consistency/development is evident with hindsight, rather than as something planned moving forward. The time gaps between seasons and how all the characters have moved on so far from where they were also lends itself to this.
There’s always been something that feels a bit fanficcy about PB to me, and I think what that is, is they built very good characters and a strong setting, but then tested so many different story types, plot types, trope types etc across the seasons it was a little like the way fanfiction tests defined characters in different frameworks.
Hope that makes sense?? I feel clumsy about explaining that sensibility, but hope it comes across. it’s one of the things I like most about the show, these gaps and possibilities between what we actually see on screen. Sometimes I think this desire to have everything explicit and unambiguous is making for some very boring media, and PB really subverts that trend from S3 onwards.

The unit testing conversation: is there an equivalent for object oriented languages? I'm the closest thing my company has ever had to a developer and I have zero formal training. I made them a reasonably complicated power app that is now a load bearing component of our booking system (matching nurse skill sets to patient needs across multiple clinics). My boss will never hold me to any standards because he knows less than I do and I'd really like to have good practice. When I test my code I mostly just ... Pretend to be a user and make sure when I try and get a specific clinician I know can do something, she shows up. Repeat 1000 times until I think I've tried everything. Is unit testing relevant to me? Should I be doing something different but equivalent? My company is a charity, even though I'm working somewhat outside my job description I'm really helping people with my work and I'd like to do a good job.
The sticking point here is not so much OO languages per se— OO does just fine with unit testing if you use objects as your interface boundaries, which is harder not to do with most contemporary OO languages— but GUIs. Unit testing is particularly unpleasant in GUIs, and OO happens to be a good paradigm for doing GUIs, which is why it was the dominant one for so long. To be honest, I do very little GUI programming of any kind (both at work at at play I'm kind of a backend person who only makes UIs if I absolutely have to) so I don't have a ton of advice here, and all I can offer are general guidelines:
Gary Bernhardt's "functional core, imperative shell" mindset is a good guideline to keep in mind when you're working in situations that must, by necessity, have a lot of state which makes unit testing tough, including GUIs. Try to design your applications around with that mindset as much as you can, and then do the unit tests on the functional core.
OO was the dominant paradigm for GUIs for decades, but recently it is starting to get superseded by things like functional reactive programming. Because I'm not a UX/webdev person I'm not fully in the know here, but webdev seems to be moving strongly in the functional reactive direction, and the latest desktop GUI frameworks like React Native and SwiftUI are as well. Obviously it's not always possible in your job to throw out the whole codebase and start over in a whole new language/paradigm, but it's precisely because unit testing with GUIs is kind of a hassle that the industry is trending in this direction. Start brushing up on that if it's relevant.
