It's very clear that even X-Men are tired of playing "the good guys" when the only thing mutants ever get in exchange for their hard work to make the world better place for all humans and mutants, is pain and death over and over and over again. In this scene Hank is positioned as one in the right and the reported as one in the wrong. Because what mutants need right now is not playing the game of house and trying their best to convince the world that they deserve to live too, but a revolution that will overthrow the status quo and pave a new path.
This is why Hank quoted MLK. Because they're unheard no matter how much they scream. The only thing they want is to live in peace and even asking that is too much for the world. Trying to go around humans on eggshells all the time, trying to not scare them more is what seems a sensible thing to do, but in reality it's what hurst the mutant cause the most. When the system is designed to never take you on seriously, no matter how much effort you put, then the only thing you can do is to destroy that system and build a better one.
For King had never meant nonviolent protest to mean “wait and see.” In fact, he made very clear that rebellions have their place in America. Just a few weeks before he died, in a packed high school gym just outside Detroit, constantly interrupted by a rowdy right-wing crowd picketing his appearance, King had these radical words to say: “…it is not enough for me to stand before you tonight and condemn riots. It would be morally irresponsible for me to do that without, at the same time, condemning the contingent, intolerable conditions that exist in our society. These conditions are the things that cause individuals to feel that they have no other alternative than to engage in violent rebellions to get attention. And I must say tonight that a riot is the language of the unheard. And what is it America has failed to hear?…It has failed to hear that the promises of freedom and justice have not been met. And it has failed to hear that large segments of white society are more concerned about tranquility and the status quo than about justice and humanity.” (“The Other America,” 1968). ~ Source: For Martin Luther King Jr., Nonviolent Protests Never Meant 'Wait and See'
If mutants keep being scared to push harder for the change, because they are aware of the human fear, then that change will never happen. Sometimes you need to topple the tower to build something stable.

Even though the X-Men were able to save the children, and if they weren't here there would have been no survivors... Kelly still spins it in an anti-mutant light because "won't somebody think of the children!?"

Trish: Scott, I cam here today to give the X-Men a chance to show the world that mutants are just like us, people. Normal. And you lie. Why lie? Scott: Because isn't that what normal people do? Trish: ...Touché.

Fictober 2023_Prompt 1: “It’s not too late. Let’s go.”
Author’s note: This is not the story these two deserve, but it’s what they’re getting right now. We’ll see what happens later. :)
Summary: Fellow mutant and friend, Sabrina Snow overhears Trish Tilby breaking up with Hank McCoy via his answering machine prior to an important black tie event. A reimagining of comic cannon events in the X-Men 2006 movie universe.
.....
Sabrina hadn’t meant to hear the voicemail Trish Tilby left Hank. Worse, she hadn’t meant for him to catch her hearing it, but the roses in her arms and her signature scent gave her away before his eyes ever met hers.
“They used the word bestiality three times...”
The words came out of the answering machine like a slap in the face, and Sabrina couldn’t help the gasp that escaped her. A gloved hand moved to cover her mouth, but Hank had heard. He always heard. He dropped his gaze from hers, reaching to turn the machine off before Trish could say any more.
“It was nice while it lasted,” he said in his rich, deep baritone. “But all good things…,” he trailed off, and his shoulders slumped. “You can take the flowers, Sabrina. I won’t be needing them after all.”
Sabrina was rooted to the floor. She had loved Hank McCoy since she came to Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters. Everyone knew she carried a torch for him in her teenage years, but now they were adults. Most assumed now she held a deep affection for an old friend, but the truth was she loved him still. The emotions raging inside her petite form were massive: elation Hank was single again; fury he’d been hurt so terribly; fear for how he’d react to her because she’d witnessed his humiliation; sorrow because Trish made Hank happy, and now he was heartbroken.
“Sabrina,” Hank’s voice was soft as he called to her. She’d yet to move, and even though he hadn’t turned around he knew she was still present.
“Your limo is here,” she rasped, unable to think of anything else to say.
Hank rubbed a hand over his face. “I won’t be needing it.”
Sabrina frowned. “You’re not going to go?” She couldn’t help the confused tone. Hank’s position as Secretary of Mutant Affairs was a huge win for the mutant cause, and this dinner was more than a fancy date out. Hank was to provide a speech on the current mutant/human climate prior to introducing the President. It wasn’t just a dinner – it was an opportunity, and Trish Tilby chose this night – this important night for Hank to shine – to break up with him. Sabrina seethed internally. Trish’s timing was either intentionally cruel or incredibly stupid.
Sabrina chose to believe the latter.
Hank didn’t reply, and Sabrina nodded, turning to leave. She was halfway to the door when a wild, daring, terrifying idea came to her. She was torn between voicing her idea or simply acting on it, and decided once more to choose the latter. She walked quickly to the door, bolting into a full sprint once she was out of his lab. She’d have to be quick for this to work.
……
Hank slumped into his office chair, burying his face in his hands. He should’ve seen this coming. Shouldn’t have let his guard down. Should’ve prepared for the inevitable. Love ‘em and leave ‘em before they can leave – that was his style. He did it with panache and a gentlemanly flair that left his lovers singing his praises as they moved onto a more traditional relationship. He was dangerous and exotic to them, but safe and prestigious enough no one could really fault them for giving it a go. Trish though...he’d begun to think maybe he and Trish could go the distance.
He leaned back in his chair, staring at the clock on his computer. The speech. It was a damn good one, too. Could he really sacrifice this opportunity for a broken heart?
He exhaled heavily, pushing himself up and out of the worn leather chair. “The show must go on, I suppose.” He was a good actor; he could pull this off. He shrugged out of his tux jacket, swinging it over his shoulder, loosened his bow tie, and willed himself to walk out of his lab.
He heard the voices sending him encouragement as he walked the halls of Xavier’s mansion, but he didn’t register faces. He was too caught up in his pain and obligation. He didn’t even notice Logan until the shorter man stepped into his path.
“Logan?” Hank pulled back, frowning at the hostile-looking mutant. He was blocking the front door, his muscled arms crossed over his broad chest.
“Ya gotta wait,” he grunted, thrusting his head towards the staircase. “Someone’s coming.”
Hank couldn’t contain the growl that rumbled in his throat. He was in no mood for Logan’s nonsense or Charles’ last minute pep talk. “Logan,” he began, the threat clear in his tone.
But Logan wasn’t listening. His eyes were on the stairs, his eyebrows suddenly reaching for his hairline as he let out a long, slow whistle. Hank frowned, turning to see what could possibly illicit that response from the Wolverine.
It took everything in him not to growl again, this time for very different reasons.
At the top of the stairs was Sabrina Snow, fellow mutant, childhood friend, confidant, and radiant beauty. Her blonde hair was piled high on her head with a few tendrils brushing her ivory shoulders. The dress was green velvet with a halter neckline that emphasized her ample bosom, and a thigh-high slit. She was leaning over to slip on a pair of black heels, exposing a long length of stocking-clad leg. Elbow length satin black gloves and sparkly earrings completed the look against slightly darker makeup than what she’d worn earlier.
She was a vision, and he knew it was all for him.
Sabrina straightened, seeing the two men looking up at her, and she flashed a pretty smile their way. “Oh, good! Logan caught you!” She began to descend the stairs, and Logan leaned forward, clapping a strong hand on Hank’s shoulder.
“I don’t know what happened, and I don’t wanna know. Just don’t screw this up, bub.”
Hank couldn’t think of anything to say. His eyes were locked on Sabrina. She always dressed well favoring vintage styles – full skirts, cardigans, pretty and feminine – and he’d always thought of her as lovely, beautiful even, but never… never sexy, tempting, forbidden, sensuous.
She reached the end of the staircase, flashing him another smile before her eyes caught sight of his undone bow tie. Her brow furrowed, reaching for it with one hand. “We can fix that in the car.”
Hank could count on one hand the number of times he’d felt stupid in his life. This moment was going to join the others; he couldn’t think of anything to say other than, “The car?”
She lowered her hand, grinning as if she were pleased with herself. “Mmmhmmm. C’mon. It’s not too late. Let’s go!” She reached for one of his hands, and began to lead him to the front door and the waiting limo just beyond it. “You have a speech to make, and a President to dazzle, Dr. McCoy.”
Words would eventually come to him that evening, not too soon after she leaned in to fix his bow tie, the scent of roses still gracing her skin. He wouldn’t remember what they were, but he knew with certainty none of them were about Trish Tilby.

New Verse
Verse '97:
Before '97 - first episode:
Maggie was born in the future and ended up in the past through her time travel powers, shortly after Charles' supposed death. Since her timeline was no longer save, she fled into the past, where she was found by the X-Men and taken to the X-Mansion. Initially, she suffered from memory loss due to a head injury she sustained during the time jump and could not remember anything.
With the help of the X-Men, she gradually managed to get her memories back and they found out that Hank was her father. They decided to keep Maggie with them and helped her learn how to control her abilities. Most of her time she spend at the school until one day a boy named Roberto was brought to school. When he disappeared, Maggie helped the others to find him until it got late and was sent back home again.
Second-third episode
When Magneto showed up and announced that he would lead the school and the X-Men from now on, Maggie was surprised and irritated because she only knew him as an enemy and criminal. Later she saw on the news how Magneto saved some people and heard how he also had saved the Morlocks before he sent them to Genosha. This made her even more suprised, but still suspicious. At night, she was woken up by the helicopter and watched from a window as Magneto was led away to face trial for his crimes.
On the day of his trial, Maggie was also at the school and watched the trial on television. When Jean went into labor, Maggie stayed behind while Logan rushed her to the hospital. Later she found out about all the events, the fight and the loss of Storm's abilities as well as the incident in the hospital. After Storm left due to the loss of her abilities, Maggie was very sad and disappointed. All of this triggered her to rethink and she began to understand Magneto more, and to a certain extent agreed with him. However, there wasn't much time to think about this, as the real Jean showed up shortly afterwards.
During Sinister and Madelyne Pryor's attack, Maggie was back in her room, when illusions from HADES manifested in her room and attacked her. Maggie managed to escape and met Morph and her father. Together with them, she joined the others and fought with them against the illusions. Exhausted from the fight, Maggie once again stayed behind while the other X-Men went to rescue Nathan.
Fourth-Fifth Episodes On Jubilee's 18th birthday, Maggie was at the table eating muffins with the others when Jubilee came and told she wanted to go to the arcade. Maggie herself was also enthusiastic about the idea, but Magneto ruined the moment. In Jubilee's room, Maggie and Roberto were listening to her complaining about Magneto when they discovered an unknown console in Jubilee's room. While Roberto and Jubilee were discussing about gaming, Maggie was called, so she left the room before she too could be sucked into the game.
Some time later, reporter Trish Tilby announced that she wanted to do an interview with the X-Men. However, Maggie wasn't particularly keen on it and prefered to go to Genosha with the others. She had heard a lot about it and wanted to see it for herself. After some discussions, she managed to convince both Magneto and her father to let her go. When they finally arrived, Maggie was more than just fascinated and excited by Genosha, until suddenly the attack occurred, which she barely survived.

Dead x men spoilers: Hank x Cecilia crumbs I feel so alive
"Cecilia . . . I should - I should call her. I haven't talked to her in, oh, years."
Tumblr media
"Where does all the time go, my friend? It feels as though it was just last year we were . . . and I was . . . ah."
Tumblr media
". . . Ah, that's right. How silly of me. I almost forgot. That's where all the time went. I broke it all."
Tumblr media
" - But enough being maudlin. I really should call Cecilia, see how she's doing. Perhaps she'll want to go out for dinner, see a show. That'd be nice. Really, quite nice . . ."
Tumblr media
So, Dead X-Men #3 - and you weren't kidding, these are crumbs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But. I can't lie, I love seeing what seems to be cat Hank again - I feel like such a hipster sometimes, saying that's my favourite version of him, but it's how I feel - and it's nice to see Foxe remember that Hank is a protective and gentle soul at heart.
Granted, I forget the specifics of Moira's first life, so god knows what happened in that timeline and how it might've affected Hank here, but he looks like a soft boy.
Also, you've just sent me down a rabbit hole, because I knew Hank and Cecilia were a thing, and I was very much in favour because Cecilia is fucking awesome, but I only really knew about the 90s stuff and the occasional hint afterwards!
I was not prepared to find out that Marjorie Liu is a massive Hank/Cecilia shipper and kept finding reasons to call back to it and push them together.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
NYX: No Way Home, issue #4, 2008. Bonus points for saying she fucking hates Trish Tilby, and I can only imagine why.
Tumblr media
X-23, vol. 3, #13. I have to say, this is one of the fucking single cutest pictures of Hank I've ever seen - Noto draws him with such a wonderful softness and cuddliness to his face, and I adore how happy Cecilia looks in the picture. You really get a sense of warmth from the picture.
Also . . . no less than two pictures in the home, huh, Cece?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Astonishing X-Men #53. Honestly, Liu writes a lovely Hank, and I adore how she handles the softness and warmth that clearly exists between these two?
Hank's historically always been something of a ladies man, but I've never gotten the impression that he ever left his exes on bad terms unless they put him in that position (hello, Trish), and the fact that he and Cecilia have that certain intimacy that speaks to love that could or couldn't slide back into romance is.
It's nice and mature and I like it a lot. And maturity isn't often something I associate with comics, or the X-Men, tbh.
Tumblr media
Astonishing X-Men #51.
Finishing each other's sentences? Fond little glances? Mhm-hmm. Uh-huh. Honestly, now I'm a little offended on Cecilia's behalf that she had those token appearances on X-Force and didn't have a stronger reaction to what she saw in that Beast, because the Cecilia I'm seeing here absolutely would not have stood for it, least of all from someone she clearly still holds a torch for.
And, of course, I'd be remiss not to talk about how Claremont saw the two.
Tumblr media
Honestly, if we have heroic Hank back now and with the X-Men, who knows, maybe there's a chance. Just need to get Marjorie Liu or another shipper back on deck. :P

superposition ch. 1, extended author’s notes
i’m going to be doing these for every chapter, just to give anyone who doesn’t read the comics a bit more context, and make some notes i’d like to share. this fic has been in the works for a very, VERY long time, and now i don’t have to shut up about it anymore!
first off, this fic was inspired by michael fassbender’s road to le mans show on youtube, which is incredible. all the pictures of him in his racing gear are real! his trainer being named “felipe” is a reference to felipe laser, michael’s coach, teammate and good friend — because sometimes you just gotta add a reference only you will understand.
the first song for this chapter is, predictably, superposition by young the giant. “when things fall into place, superposition…” i mean, these two meeting is kismet, right? the second one is the night we met by lord huron. ignore the sad part — this song is the tentative beginning of something. and, i mean… this is the night day they met.
the daily bugle is the publication where most mutant news comes out in the comics. trish tilby is a human reporter from the x-books — she actually works for a made up TV station, but that’s fine.
charles accidentally pulling erik’s coffee order out of his head is an homage to tough little baby telepath, where charles accidentally orders erik’s thai food without having asked what he wanted. in the same way, he doesn’t even realize he did it.
we get a light introduction to a couple of characters here:
emma frost (our dear white queen of both the comics and movies, of course — but i’ll be relying more on her comic characterization, where underneath she’s just in it for the people she loves, and terrifyingly brilliant), erik’s best friend & agent
a couple mentions of scott summers, a driver who races against erik & emma’s boyfriend (our beloved cyclops, of course.)
a one-off mention of miss lorna dane (the crown princess polaris). if you haven’t read the comics and don’t know lorna, you’ve probably seen her used as erik’s child in lots of fics. while she’s cannonically erik’s daughter, in this fic she’s not — just a badass who has erik’s same power set and incredible green hair. y’all are going to love her. :) (don’t worry, we may see dad erik yet.)
and yes, erik’s ex-team lead is brian braddock, the brilliant captain britain! i adore brian, but someone had to play that role. if you’re not a comic fan, i don’t think you need to worry much about this one.
p.s. if you’re confused about why erik’s life sucks so much right now, don’t worry, you’re supposed to be.
feel free to hit the replies or inbox if you have any questions. :-)
