Tres meses! Han sido tres meses desde que te vi llegar, desde que te pudimos tener en nuestros brazos. Durante los cuales hemos visto la fidelidad de Dios. Durante el embarazo, recibimos malas noticias, pero también esperanza y palabras que afirmaron nuestra fe y esperanza. “Alva va a estar bien”, fue una de las promesas que marcaron nuestro camino y a darle hasta el final, con temor pero con esperanza. Hoy, después de tantas citas médicas, exámenes, análisis (y los que faltan), Alva está bien, me atrevo a decir, mejor que el “bien” que esperábamos. Alva tiene un cromosoma extra, ¡así que es mejor que bien! ¡Alva no está enferma! Su condición es distinta al promedio (por así decirlo). Y eso me ha recordado constantemente, que el amor del Padre es para TODOS, y así como Él dejó su condición Divina para hacerse a la condición humana, y de esa forma darnos la oportunidad de reconectarnos y cambiar nuestro mundo, nosotros podemos (y deberíamos) cambiar nuestro mundo para que una condición diferente a la que pensamos es normal, pueda desarrollarse de una forma libre y natural, sin cargar una etiqueta que le hacer ser apartado, excluido y tratado de una forma “especial”. No te preocupes, no todos tendremos el tiempo de paternidad/maternidad (o la vida en general) perfectos, sin fallas y todo cool. Permítete llorar, quéjate, dudar, equivocarte. Pero también pausa un momento, reflexiona y ve, lo que has avanzado, las pequeñas victorias, todos esos pequeños pasos, que parecieran insignificantes, pero valen tanto. Tu historia no tiene que ser la historia de tus amigas, tus triunfos no debes comprarlos con los demás. Disfruta los buenos momentos y los no tan buenos. El tiempo sigue adelante, hazlo también. Some days are harder than others. We went to church and she made a mess of blessed bread all over the church. Also gave herself a haircut (still can’t find the scissors) and painted her face pink with marker. But she colored one of the pictures from Sunday school and had to put it up to Venerate it. It’s Down Syndrome Awareness month! Wear your blue and yellow and your mismatched socks!

Down syndrome isn’t scary! And the extra chromosome isn’t going to stop someone from doing great things!

We are more alike than different. A person with Down syndrome is exactly that: a person! They will face adversity, fall in love, have a career, achieve their goals!

My girl started school this year (at 3 years old!) and she is doing fantastic! She didn’t even cry that first day, and was confused as to why she didn’t get to go on the weekend. She is my world and I’m so proud of her!

March 21st : World Down Syndrome Day

Today is World Down Syndrome Day and I find it really sad that there that much buzz about it on Tumblr.

We talk about mental health awarness, autism awareness, adhd awareness, chronic illness awareness, etc. but I've really seen very little content on Down Syndrome. Every type of disability/difference should have the chance to be seen, to be heard. Every disability/difference deserves to be recognized for what it is and have the change to discredit all the stigma and misinformation that is passed around.

I recently starting working with a 2 year old with Down Syndrome and she is just wonderful. She can be a handful at times yes but so are all kids at some point. I've gotten to the privilege of having my preconceptions put to the test and to have them completely obliterated. Did I mention that she is afro-american? Because Down Syndrome isn't just present in white people but in people of colour as well.

I wouldn't be doing my part if I didn't mention World Down Syndrome Day and it would be wonderful if you could all help me spread the awareness. You can also wear mismatched socks today which is the sign used to show solidarity and awareness and to start conversations (unless you always have mismatched socks but then hey today you are doing it for a great cause!)
