Laser-patterned thin films that swell into kirigami-like structures offer new opportunities in hydrogel technology

New options for making finely structured soft, flexible and expandable materials called hydrogels have been developed by researchers at Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology (TUAT). Their work extends the emerging field of "kirigami hydrogels," in which patterns are cut into a thin film allowing it to later swell into complex hydrogel structures. The research is published in the journal Science and Technology of Advanced Materials. Hydrogels have a network of water-attracting (hydrophilic) molecules, allowing their structure to swell substantially when exposed to water that becomes incorporated within the molecular network. Researchers Daisuke Nakagawa and Itsuo Hanasaki worked with an initially dry film composed of nanofibers of cellulose, the natural material that forms much of the structure of plant cell walls.

genuinely fuck chris chibnall for choosing not to do a christmas or even new years special for his first ep. 12 could’ve regenerated with that speech in the doctor falls which is already an incredible fucking episode but that would’ve really tipped the scales to legendary status territory. tuat is good but you can tell 12 was supposed to regenerate at the end of tdf

(@transmasc-rose) my biggest issue with s11 (haven't seen 13's other seasons so I don't know if it changes) is how she doesn't actually... FIX any of the problems she involves herself in.

Like, s11e02, that competition? It doesn't end, it doesn't get better, the two contestants just win and 13 gets her tardis back.

s11e04? The hotels still exist. We don't know if that guy is going to change his practices. The spiders are locked up in a box.

s11e07? Kerblam! isn't dealt with. The planet's workforce being robotic and that making its citizens poor isn't dealt with. The Kerblam! worker's barely ever seeing their families isn't dealt with.

Like the Doctor likes to leave a wreck for others to build back up, but they at least usually Get Rid Of The Problem in some way.

and like i don’t need her to Fix everything. i don’t even really need her to break things. but the thing is. i think the energy they’re going for here is supposed to be: passive, informed by how painful it was to try to change things as twelve, how much that hurt went into her regeneration. and that’s an interesting turn to me! or it could be! because instead of that, what’s on the screen isn’t passivity. it’s complacency. and that is not like the doctor at all.

she should be trying to convince herself that this is the right thing to do. in her bones is the urge to fuck shit up. she should really, i feel, be struggling more with her decisions to Not Do That. should be justifying her actions to herself, to her companions, as “If we break it, what if that makes things worse?” Hell, if that was what the season was leaning towards, it’d redeem some of the odd choices of Rosa, because it would be clear that the Doctor, in her stride to Preserve what’s there in fear of making a future worse, is literally standing by while someone with everything to risk puts it on the line to make the world a better place.

but like. i don’t think the show is aware of any of that. i really don’t. and it’s disappointing because i’d love to explore that side of the doctor.

i’m enjoying more of this season than i’m disliking, i think, especially thirteen herself because whittaker’s carrying it. but. well. we’ll see.

Panini have published a new anthology collecting all the Fourth Doctor comic strips from DWM, no doubt because the The Star Beast has been adapted.

Even though this is an obvious 60th cash in, I do hope we get more anthologies like this as many of the previous collections are now out of print. Not sure how they'll do the Fifth Doctor though since there aren't really enough stories to fill an anthology. Might be best to bundle them with the Sixth Doctor stories and release one bumper volume.
