Splatoon 3 thread, 2/18/2021
(Some context, this was posted on, as noted, 2/18/2021, right after Splatoon 3 was revealed. It is hilariously wrong. I am posting it here purely for preservational reasons, as my Twitter is at imminent risk for deletion)
Okay so can I just say holy shit Splatoon 3
Because
Holy shit Splatoon 3
And can I also say I totally called the post-apocalyptic Mad Max vibe, the presence of Salmonids…
But what I didn't call was HOW they would integrate this into the world.
Splatsville isn't post-apocalyptic. The Splatlands are NOT the result of an apocalypse. Nintendo's tweets indicate that Inklings and Octolings WENT there BY CHOICE after the Final Fest, to follow the TREND of Chaos (VERY in-character for Inklings, see the Splat 1 art book).
Splatsville is very deliberately themed after Kowloon Walled City. I must assume that the people already living there were the poor and unfortunate. Seeing their home set on by trend-setting youth, such that its development 'accelerated rapidly since the Final Splatfest'.
My guess is that it was originally a small settlement, but the sudden influx of youth led to the buildings-on-buildings-in-buildings architecture of Kowloon Walled City taking form. Creating true chaos from the 'chaos' of...simply not following trends or living in suburbia.
Please god let them execute on the themes that this implies. I want to see a plot about how chasing trends for their own sake no matter what that means for the people around you is destructive. Please. God. PLEASE.
Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

i would like to talk abt how yuzuru tachikawa went OFF in storyboarding/directing the separation arc w/ the use of natural and artificial light on reigen.
we only see his face w natural light before opening s&s
Tumblr media
and then after his fallout with mob, it’s only behind him.
Tumblr media
his face becomes illuminated by only his laptop in his apartment
Tumblr media
also after mob leaves him, the blinds in the office are closed compared to when he first started. this is the window that originally showed him the light. he is subconsciously shutting out that dream of “being somebody”
Tumblr media
more under cut!!
the only exception to this rule is his convo w/ ekubo, who is the character he can be the most honest to.
Tumblr media
when we get to the bar scene, it’s nighttime, so there’s ONLY artificial light. it’s framed similar to him looking out the s&s window, which was the last time he was able to live w/o the fake “psychic” title. except now, it’s lit blue instead of warmly.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
he wants the same thing, but the second time is leading him to a path of self destruction: like a moth to a flame.
Tumblr media
when we get to the Cancellation, he’s under studio lights and, later, camera flashes. the lights are brighter but his shadows are harsher. he’s being seen but in the worst way possible.
Tumblr media
lastly, you’d expect sunlight to be on his face when mob tells him he’s a good person, but it stays in the shadows because reigen doesnt Say it. he hasnt Told mob hes a fraud. you can see the shadows creep into his face when he lifts his face. the good part of him is acknowledged

oikage on the train fluff | 485 words | originally posted here
-
Tobio doesn’t normally take the train, but he’d gone shopping with Yachi to buy some supplies and now it’s late and he’s a little farther from home than he’s used to. He takes a seat. The car isn’t too crowded and as he holds his bag and closes his eyes, he hopes he can sneak a quick nap in before his stop.
No such luck. Someone all but shoves him at the next stop and he cracks an eye open to glare. He’s greeted by the sight of a smirking Oikawa. “Move over, Tobio-chan. You wouldn’t make me stand, would you?”
“You can have my seat,” Tobio mutters, starting to get up, but Oikawa shakes his head.
“So you look down on me?” he snorts. “No way. Scoot. The train’s about to start up again.” He motions with his hand and Tobio reluctantly moves so Oikawa can take a seat next to him. It’s a tight fit. Tobio doesn’t think he’s ever been this close to Oikawa.
They sit in relative silence, but there’s no way Tobio can fall asleep now.
This is apparently not the case for Oikawa, though, as the third year’s posture starts to droop. He catches himself mid-fall with a surprised sniff and raises his head, blinking.
“Oikawa-san,” Tobio whispers, trying not to disturb the other passengers, “are you okay?”
Oikawa sleepily mumbles something about pulling an all-nighter for a project and then having practice after school. Tobio grimaces and then has to lunge to grab hold of Oikawa’s jersey as he pitches forward.
At this rate, Tobio thinks Oikawa might just pass out on the floor of the car. “Oikawa-san,” he says again, “if you need to sleep, you can, uh...” He awkwardly gestures. “My shoulder. You can...use that.”
He winces, sure that Oikawa is going to mock him. However, lack of sleep and pure exhaustion seem to have diminished Oikawa’s ability to make sharp jabs significantly, as the other just stares for a second before leaning in. Warm breath tickling Tobio’s ear, Oikawa whispers, “If you tell anyone about this, you’re dead,” before his head ungracefully plops onto Tobio’s shoulder.
Tobio is so surprised that he can hardly register what’s just happened. He sits stiffly, trying not to move Oikawa, but his eyes stray more often than he cares to admit. They’re even closer now, close enough that Tobio can see how long Oikawa’s eyelashes are and how a little tendril of hair rises with every quiet exhale.
His hair looks really soft.
Once he’s certain Oikawa is asleep, Tobio tilts his head, letting his cheek rest gently atop the fluffy brown hair and yes, it is as soft as he thought. He’ll make sure to move before Oikawa wakes up, but until then, the two of them will sit here, squished a little too close for comfort, sharing warmth.
Maybe he should take the train more often.

okay here's how you design a fantasy weapon pls like and subscribe follow me for more tips-
Tumblr media
Kidding- but this was sent to me by Dyl just a while ago and I just had to.
I do actually love seeing these wild designs, there's more imagination in them than you can beat out of a roomful of AI "artists".
Art by Peter Andrew Jones if I'm not mistaken.
Tumblr media
I do wish there were more of them around, just over-the-top bullshit that doesn't take itself too seriously.
This one's from The Sword and the Sorcerer (1982). It's a sword with THREE blades. Two of them shoot out of the hilt as projectiles- I love it. I would never use it.
Tumblr media
I set out posting my art online initially to design "practical fantasy weapons", and while I haven't abandoned the "practical" part myself, going nuts on weapon designs is still just really fun to do.
Saradomin Godsword from OldSchool Runescape and the newfangled RS3 version.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Doesn't have to be "practical". Depending on the context, the looks can be more important than the functionality.
Sanderson depicts shardblades in The Stormlight Archive as being ultralight to justify their size. Fun middleground, but not always necessary.
Art by Alex Allen.
Tumblr media
There are weapons that will forever be iconic BECAUSE they went nuts with 'em.
Of course they also went nuts with the people using them, so there's internal consistency, but the point stands.
Guts' Dragonslayer, Berserk (1989-2021) by Kentaro Miura.
Tumblr media
Cloud Strife's Buster Sword, Final Fantasy 7 (1997) by Square Enix, image from the 2020 Remake
Tumblr media
Moonlight Greatsword, in one of its many iterations, this time as Ludwig's Holy Blade from Bloodborne (2015) in The Old Hunters DLC by From Software
Tumblr media
Kratos' Blades of Chaos, God of War (2005), image from their iteration in God of War (2018) by Sony's Santa Monica Studio.
Tumblr media
Just- don't pretend you could ever use them in the real world, yourself.
Actual martial artists can already hurt themselves using tried-and-tested weapons from history (i.e. there is someone to learn how they use them from), let alone the average untrained gamer with something out of fantasy.
Doesn't stop people from trying. Baltimore Knife and Sword are among the many blacksmiths who routinely produce real world versions of fictional weaponry (look up Man at Arms: Reforged on YouTube) and recently Digitally Twisted Outlaws (also on YouTube) started training with one such giant replica Dragonslayer, and dubbed their weapon-style the "Colossus Sword Form".
Bottom line, just have fun with it. Don't get too bogged down by what's consistent with real world usage, especially when the context is fictional.

The Star Trek 'Ultimate Broadcast Order' watchlist, or, what I spent the last week doing when I should have been studying.
tl;dr: I created a full Star Trek Alpha Canon watchlist for watching everything in per-episode/per-film broadcast/release order.
Link first, in case you don't want to read my explanation for why I did this.
So, some pretext. I'm a lifelong Trek fan, having grown up on an assortment of TNG and VOY reruns as a kid in the 90s, but other than that and the first two Kelvin Timeline movies, I've never actually sat down and watched all of Star Trek in order.
So, wanting to watch Lower Decks but wanting to understand all of its references to past Trek, I decided to change that, and am planning to watch all of Alpha Canon (so, all the shows, and all the films).
The question, then, is, what order should I watch things in?
I could watch in production order, but production order isn't always intended viewing order (TNG producing some Part IIs before Part Is, for instance). I could watch in stardate order, in order to 'fix' the episode order for Voyager, but from what I've read this introduces small continuity errors due to the shows flubbing a few of the stardates. I could try to manually resolve every continuity error in either of these approaches, but that'd mean having to thoroughly spoil myself on the episodes before watching them.
Instead, I landed on something truly, absolutely insane: the 'Ultimate Broadcast Order'. Basically, to watch everything in broadcast order, not per-season, but PER EPISODE. Meaning, during the periods where two shows overlap, you interleave the episodes by individual airdate.
You see, I'm a stickler for the idea that, as a series goes on the creators have a reasonable expectation that a fan will have seen everything that came before, meaning in a broad sense release order is just, kind of sacrosanct in preserving the intended or 'normal' experience of a franchise. But, following from that is the understanding that, when TOS or VOY were coming out, the fans didn't have the luxury of being able to 'fix' the episode order, and when DS9 was coming out, the fans didn't have the luxury of being able to watch, say, all of a season of DS9 and then all of a season of TNG/VOY. If you were a Trek fan in the 90s, VOY kept having episodes shifted around, and TNG/DS9/VOY were alternating episodes, and that just kind of was just how it was.
So, ultimately, the purpose of this list is, contrary to most watchlists that subjectively try to preserve the canon order of events, to create an objective order of episodes based on the experience of a lifelong Trek fan, watching episodes and movies as they came out since 1966.
Also, yes, I put The Cage between TNG S1 and S2. I'm assuming that the average lifelong Trek fan wouldn't have went out of their way to watch the partial restoration that was released to home video in 1986, but was enough of a fan to catch the full color restoration when it was aired on TV in 1988. This is the 'ultimate broadcast order', not the 'ultimate sensical order'. /lh

ok that poll got me Thinking again and i wanted to archive this in some way, so. repost of a comment i left on youtube brainrotting over sora Not being the master of masters
Sora being the Master of Masters just does not make any logical, emotional, or thematic sense. If anything, the MoM and Sora have been—and are continuing to be—set up as thematical opposites to one another, the MoM a jaded person who has lost so much to the forces of darkness, to the point where he will manipulate anyone around him in order to reach his end goal of living in a world without it, and Sora a positive optimist who, despite also enduring multiple hardships and losses due to darkness, also goes through many trials that prove that balance between the two forces is important, and that darkness is not an all-encompassing terror meant to be destroyed.
Sora's whole Thing™ is about relying on connections and friendship despite physical distance, the idea that no matter where you are or what happens to you, those connections mattered and will always matter. He believes in individuality, the idea that characters like Roxas, Xion, Namine and even Vanitas are their own people, despite what other people may try and proclaim. Meanwhile, the MoM lives to avenge people who are long gone, forgetting the value of those relationships as they were simply because the people he cared for are no longer physically here. He strips his pupils of their individuality, giving them masks and names at his own discretion, and directing them like pawns on a chess board.
These two are textbook foils to one another. The idea that the Master of Masters is somehow a grown up version of Sora who lost his friends to darkness and became a cynical, jaded mastermind trying to escape the concept of it altogether not only contradicts the existing lore about things like time travel (and specifically how the MoM does it), but is just a complete slap in the face to both of these characters as individuals.

I know Quackity said "Don't stress if you can't watch every single POV and if you don't know all the lore" and all that, but it genuinely frustrates me so much that I cannot, realistically, know every single detail of the QSMP storyline. Even trying to just focus on the "main" story isn't possible since so many people are doing things tied to it, and so many unexpected things happen.
I don't really have a point to make with this post, I'm just venting my frustrations. I like knowing complete stories and knowing I can't do that with QSMP frustrates me so much.

All Eyes On Me - RuiKasa thread fic
Tumblr media
Looking around the sea of faces, Tsukasa soaks in that feeling.
He won. This is what they get. This is what those assholes deserve. He revels in the panic and anger etched into the faces of the crowd. They're not angry at him, no. They're angry at the man standing next to Tsukasa on the stage.
Aoyagi Harumichi is clutching the microphone silently, his face contorted into a grimace, a mix of anger, disbelief, and fear. Tsukasa turns around to face the man, shrugging nonchalantly.
"Well, Aoyagi-san? Are you still confident you can clean your name?" The blonde lets his lips settle into a lazy smirk. Aoyagi clenches his jaw, his free hand curling into a fist.
"You...!" The politician grits through his teeth. Tsukasa merely chuckles.
"Me?" he steps back, raising his hands in mock surrender
"I have nothing to do with this, Aoyagi-san! I simply presented the public with the knowledge they deserve to know, no?" The performer lets his hands fall to his sides, smiling nonchalantly. Aoyagi's face scrunches up in rage.
"You have no idea what you just did...!" Tsukasa laughs at that
"Oh, but I do! I do! But please, you have only yourself to blame. After all, all I did was compile the information~ Don't the people deserve to know what kind of father makes decisions for them?"
Tsukasa lets his gaze wander back to the crowd the feeling of victory, of malicious satisfaction, burns in his chest. Aoyagi Harumichi had it coming. Tsukasa really only did him a favor. After all, Tsukasa even gave the man a chance to defend himself! It doesn't matter if the blonde presented the information in such a way, which would make it impossible for the politician to ever better his image.
Yes, Aoyagi Harumichi is done for. There is no way the man can get out of this hole he dug for himself and Tsukasa uncovered. Something twists in the blonde's chest at the thought. A sick sort of satisfaction, mischief, or perhaps something worse. Something the star would forever refuse to acknowledge...
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tumblr media
A couple meters away, up upon one of the balconies that overlook the big theater, a tall figure watches the performance unfold, thoughtlessly playing with one of their earrings. A lazy, knowing smile adorns their face.
"Rui, you look really creepy right now." The figure's friend says, looking blankly at the two men on the stage.
"Fufu, Harumichi-kun really asked for this. Although I kinda wanted to have my fun with him too.." The figure sighs dramatically, before letting a chuckle escape their lips. "But... Tenma-kun did a good job too. I wouldn't mind working with him if he wasn't so reckless!"
Nene groans. Rui's been on his self-righteous mission of ruining all prominent politicians for a while now and it's always been difficult to try and keep him in check, but now there's another person doing the same thing? Who knows what trouble would arise if the two ever crossed paths!
For now, her goal is to make sure that Rui doesn't make any plans to involve them with Tenma.
Although it is kinda sweet, Nene thinks. The way Rui's eyes glisten as he gazes down at Tenma as the blonde elegantly walks across the stage below them, calmly listing all the gross things Aoyagi Harumichi has done. Nene can't remember the last time her friend's face looked like that. So bright, so mesmerized, so enchanted.
Perhaps keeping Tenma and Rui apart will be harder than she thought.
