The Problem of Intent

I thought I'd move a few things over here from my Typepad blog which is slowly going away, things that deserve another audience, or at least that I think deserve another audience. Here's the first of them. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I woke up this morning thinking about the word "intent," as I have been off and on for some time, for reasons relating to the circumstances mentioned above (more on that in a later, catch-up post). My ruminations finally solidified yesterday after watching an episode of Red Table Talk on Facebook (another reason I haven't been back here in a while—Facebook, not Red Table Talk). It's a good episode with Chelsea Handler talking with Jada Pinkett Smith and Adrienne Banfield-Jones about white privilege and parts of it are really painful to watch, mostly the bits from Handler's documentary, in which she interviews white women, mostly poor and conservative, about whether they think white privilege exists (they don't). Handler's own previous dumbassery on the subject is also pretty painful, but she's getting it right now, and that's what matters most.

But there's a point in the video where she tells a story on herself, illustrating her former dumbassery and the person who calls her out said, "It's not about the intention, it's about the reception." A little further on, Handler acknowledges that white people don't want to learn because it's uncomfortable to learn not to be an asshole or a bigot to other people, "you gotta go head first into deep things and get in trouble and say stupid things to learn how to say smarter things." All of which is true. Not just say smarter things, but know smarter things, I would add. The process of learning to be a good ally to people who don't have your privilege is hard and embarrassing and upsetting. It's heartbreaking and guilt-making to realize you've been walking through the world hurting people (if you're not a Rethuglican who enjoys that kind of thing; but I digress.) 

And then Jada Pinkett Smith says that key thing that I've been thinking about for ages now: "I think we gotta make some room for people to say stupid stuff sometimes," because racism has been going on for so long that most of it is unconscious now. People don't realize they're being racist unless it's pointed out to them (and that's where other white people need to get off their asses; it's not Black people's job to do that). She continues, "Not every—you know, not every action is racist." So while it may feel racist to the object of the action, it may not to the actor and it may not have that intent behind it. 

This is why intent matters—also. Not by itself, but in addition to reception. Because if we are doing our damnedest to be a good friend and generous person, to do the right thing, to not be racist, sexist, bigoted, insensitive, ableist, oblivious to the experiences of others, and we fuck up along the way, a little compassion helps fuel the struggle for everyone. There's a mental health element to this too, and Handler prefaces her part of the discussion with what seems like her irrelevant experiences in therapy to make this point. She spends a long time talking about her own struggles with pain and anger and how realizing how angry she was was because she was in pain was the thing that broke her open, finally, and got some real work done. When we're operating primarily on a foundation of pain (and here I walked away to go make my bed, because, yanno, pain), then the world becomes our enemy. Everyone becomes our enemy. Everyone is out to hurt us, to insult us, to fuck with us, plotting against us to make us miserable, being mean to us. Everything everyone says or does to us that hurts us (and when we're already in pain, this doesn't generally take a lot) is intentional. Because people are bad and mean and hurtful and fuck all ya'll anyway. I hate people.

And that's clearly bullshit. It feels right when we're hurting, and damn if there aren't days when I get up in the morning and look at the news and think What the ever loving fuck is wrong with you people? about nearly everyone in the world after seeing all the hurt we do each other. But to think the whole world is your enemy, that every person you meet, every friend you make, will ultimately betray and hurt you creates a huge number of problems and solves nothing. First, believing we are somehow important enough for individuals in our lives (never mind the rest of the world) to spend their time machinating about how to hurt us is one of the best examples of narcissism I can think of, and utterly delusional. That's like gaslighting yourself. It's also an example of flawed perceptions and expectations. It's our expectations of others, ultimately, that wounds us: expecting perfection, expecting an intimate and automatic understanding of our POV, expecting unearned unconditional love, expecting all the attention. Love people as you find them, and if they, in their own pain and rage, hurt you, love them from a distance.

Worse than this, though, is that anticipating injury from other people assures that this is all we'll ever get from them. Ever. Because everything they do will be an injury to us if we fail to see their intent and their focus. One of the last times my mom came to visit me here in New York, we were walking along the street and she said, in what was clearly a revelatory moment for her, "wow, people are really so focused on themselves that they don't really pay attention to anyone else." This was coming from a woman who agonized over what other people might think of her if she went out without looking perfectly dressed, perfectly coiffed, perfectly dignified, who was painfully self-conscious about how her disability made her look. I wish she had had more time to enjoy the liberation of that revelation. Because she was right about that. People are all dealing with their own pain, their own stuff, their own troubles, and hurting or judging you is not a high priority on their to-do list.

Unless they are so wrapped up in their own pain that they are going to lash out first, and there are some people who are that hurt, that broken. It's good to remember that it's still really not about you in those circumstance; if they are hurting and judging you, what they see  in you that they hate is almost always what they hate or feel insecure about themselves. Those folks have a lot of work to do that you can't do for them; all you can do is wish them well and get out of range. Because in their pain, they create more of it. This is what intentional, unexamined and institutional racism and sexism does to people. It creates a cycle of pain that needs work to be broken.

Again, this is why intent matters. If I'm hurting you out of maliciousness that's one thing; I need a slap upside the head and a boot in the rear. If I'm hurting you out of my own pain, that's more understandable but still not excusable; I've got some work to do on myself, then, and owe you an apology and an effort to do better. But if I'm hurting you by accident, because I'm learning to do better and still making mistakes, cut me a break please. Work with me. Call me out, by all means. I can't learn if I don't know I've screwed up. If it's really egregious, don't spare your anger. I can't rightly ask you to do that and I probably deserve it. But don't use my mistake to make judgments about what kind of person I am at the core, because then you're doing the same thing that bigots do. If you think I'm the kind of person who would intentionally hurt others, then we already have a problem of perception and reception on your end. And that's bad intent.

New Paracosm, WHO DIS?

Thinkin' about posting here more, I got a new paracosm that's tf2 based, the curent arch is that BLU scout has joined the RED team because he got real sick and tired of being sick and tired on the BLU team. Scout's daughter, Emi (whose a fankid oc I made up) found him in the woods near the Red base after he got injured running away from the BLU base (BLU Heavy likes to place random bear traps around the BLU base just for his own sick enjoyment of others pain). To summarize the arch using trope terms, this arc is based around the trope I like to call "Don't Feed The Monster" which is the trope where a dangerous being is found in a state where they're not at their full power level (usually due to an injury), and they start a friendship with a younger, innocence being that either doesn't know of their dangerous past or believes that the dangerous being can change through small acts of kindness, one of those acts usually being the younger being giving the older dangerous being a slice of cake. This trope's name comes from the painting by Dead Sound "Don't Feed The Monster" the painting that inspired his animated short film called, "No Monsters"

Some personal history

I joined MLKSHK by invitation on January 6, 2011 as a regular user. I found MLKSHK to be a breath of fresh air compared to your typical social media site (which still holds true today). After the shutdown announcement in 2014, I tried to offer help and reached out again around July 2014 after the announcement that the site would not be closing. I had met Andre once before, but mostly knew of him through colleagues at Six Apart. Andre took me up on the volunteer help… remember, by this time he wasn’t running MLKSHK as a business, so the ~3 years that follow are maintaining the site as a hobby, particularly since it was still losing money.

Initially, I helped with site performance issues, including some query optimizations. As time passed, it became clear that the site was still in danger of closing due to the cost of services it was incurring, which was not offset enough by subscriptions. So Andre and I went through a cost assessment process and we identified a number of things that could be done. Switching away from Fastly to a cheaper CDN (KeyCDN at the time) shaved CDN operational costs by 66% (Fastly charges 12 cents per gigabyte of transfer and KeyCDN charges 4 cents) so we started there, since it was the easiest change to make and had the most impact.

I also helped with the site’s participation in the “Good Web Bundle” promotion which brought in a few subscribers and returning members. The following year (2015), we had to rebuild subscriptions from scratch since both Tugboat and Amazon payments had to be retired, and we replaced those with Stripe. Alas, the site was still just not able to sustain itself as it was, and a decision was made to close for good in 2017.

Before that happened, the MLKSHK community began a conversation with Andre to transition the site to a community-run operation. I wasn’t involved in discussions, so don’t have insight into the choice behind creating a new domain and brand instead of adopting MLKSHK outright (I suspect Andre just preferred a clean break). Andre agreed to share all data and source code to the transition team. I helped with transitioning the source code for MLKSHK; cleaning it up for the basis of the MLTSHP repository to become an open source project.

It was decided that it would be best to make MLTSHP more closed in nature… so much of MLKSHK was open to free users, even some allowance for post creation. The plan was to relaunch with a membership requirement, but also with two price plans - the regular $24/year membership (plus an option to specify any amount over $24/year if the member wants to), and a new $3/year membership which effectively was the same level of service that was provided for free registered users before. While posting was being restricted to members, we wanted to keep certain things open for all: our “Popular” page, and individual post links which can be shared anywhere.

There would be some downtime between MLKSHK’s closure and the launch of MLTSHP. We aimed to keep that downtime low, but it gave us some time to make some larger changes that would make for a more sustainable and cost-efficient service.

Switching off of Amazon AWS for web server and database service was a big one. I had wanted to do this for MLKSHK as early as 2014, but we never did. I took a snapshot of AWS expenses from January 2017 and costs for that month were $400 (just RDS + S3 + EC2 and outbound data transfer to our CDN). We switched these to use Linode. For CDN service, KeyCDN was more cost effective than Fastly was, but we decided to switch to using Cloudflare for CDN since it wouldn’t cost anything (ironically, MLTSHP has since switched back to Fastly after receiving an offer to operate at no cost). The only remaining AWS feature MLTSHP is using is S3 for block storage. There are some cheaper S3-compatible services available, but the potential savings have never justified the task of a migration. Operational costs today are less than half of what we were spending for AWS alone, and we pay nothing for CDN service.

We also set up a real deployment process, utilizing Buildkite (they offer a free account for us to use), making it easier to test and deploy community-led changes. This also included utilizing Docker which also makes it easier for contributors to run their own copy of the site locally for development.

Ahead of MLTSHP’s launch, a service was built that would transcode GIF images (a popular, but heavy file format) to video formats that those would serve instead of the original GIF file. This was a cost-saving measure, since popular GIFs lead to a lot of traffic, so the smaller the better.

Another must-have for relaunch was a process that would migrate a user’s MLKSHK data when they signed into MLTSHP. This required us to load all the MLKSHK data into the MLTSHP database (in a separate set of tables) and we also had permission from Andre to make a wholesale copy of the MLKSHK S3 bucket to MLTSHP’s S3 bucket so all images were preserved.

And we also had a full rebranding to do. Replacing all site design and assets so that it was different, but retaining the spirit of the original site.

There have been a lot of changes to the site since that time. We’ve added site-wide search, responsive design so the site works well for mobile devices, support for light and dark mode, an alt text field so images can be described, and many other things. Big feature releases are few and far between, but the site is stable which is a great feature.

Our Github repo has had 412 commits from 26 different contributors. There’s still a lot of stuff to do (patches welcome)! But the most important feature we’ve developed is a self-sustainable community. We don’t have to worry about closing.

an odd attempt…

at creating a 2011 style blog. not in a “ohhh 2011 was so much cooler” way, but in an… it was so much cooler way.

i’ll sit for hours reading people’s old typepad and blogspot blogs, just like i did back then. and i’m still filled with the same nostalgic whimsy i felt then.

yes, a nostalgic whimsy for the moment i was in.

listen, i was 14 in 2011. it was really a horrible horrible age to be (my condolences to all 14 year olds). i found a magical escapism in blogs, bands like eisley and singers like feist. i was at the age where i wanted so dearly to hold onto my childhood while so badly wanting to be an independent person of my own.

blogs were simple. they didn’t always say much, they didn’t always have much to say. and that was totally okay in them. aesthetics mattered but not in the same way they do today. they just wanted to share the little pretties in their lives.

i want to capture this essence and put it in the bottle that is this tumblr. i hope you’ll join me here though this?

Moving on, still dowsing

Here I am on Tumblr, too cheap to keep paying for my old blog on Typepad, now that I've decided that I don't want to monetize the things I enjoy enough to keep a "professional" blog. I still hope to go back to making books again, once I've had a chance to heal up from spinal surgery I had in April, and I'll probably never stop writing, but whether it's poetry or fiction or fanfiction or blogs or essays or political rants, I leave up to chance. I turned 63 in June, and while I hope to keep working for a while yet, because I've got a great job with a lot of flexibility, who knows how long that will last either.

I hope what you'll see here, eventually, is a bit of my creative output: artist's books, poems, links (maybe) to the various kinds of fiction I've been writing, and my thoughts on what the fuck is wrong with people. Oh yes. There will be swearing. Sometimes that's the only way to express what's inside, a good four-letter word. Take yourself elsewhere if that offends you. This is not the blog you're looking for. Move along.

So who am I?

Nobody special. I’ve been any number of things in my life—former wannabe marine biologist, servant of physicists, word wrangler, exploited vagabond scholar, New York City’s secret lover, union activist, accused lesbian, novelist, unapologetic science, tech, and Star Wars geek and Trekker, uncloseted fanfic writer, dilettante book artist, believer in the apocalypse—but through all of that, I’ve been a poet. No matter what else I do or think or believe or what labels I wear, I know that poems are the best single delivery system of emotional bombs, the kind that blow off the masks we all hide behind, if only for a moment, and only to ourselves.

I'm back in Brooklyn, where I started out when I first moved to New York in 1986. Now I'm near the bay, where I can see the ships go by and it's dark enough to see Orion overhead in the winter. I live alone, with my cat. Yeah, go ahead, stereotype that. I'm having a great life. The best part of it is I have ceased to give a fuck what other people who are not my friends and loved ones think of me. I have a fantastic family of choice, some of whom I've known since elementary school, and only a few for less than 10 years. The cat? Miss Bean is a stray some asshole left in her carrier on the street with the door open. She's got serious attitude and a scream like a panther. Some days I can see why they threw her out; but nobody deserves that. And she's learning, after almost five years, to love snuggling. Her cat tree does not have a sign on it that reads "Fort Asshole" for nothing though.

That could be hanging on my front door too, so that's fair enough.

Sup, The name's Ash, welcome to my daydreaming blog. The place where I like to go on and on and on about people and places that don't exist! Most of my daydreams consists of dorks hanging out and sometimes having a mental crisis, (lol).

Along with some melodrama, I like throwing in some romance too! Teases, stolen glances, some loving bickering here and there, confessions blurted out during a passion rant, nothing too spicy, tbh.

Other than posting about my own daydreams and paras, I reblog other post by fellow daydreamers. I might post a notion template or some artisty template or two to help with visualizing daydreams better, too.

Since the start of this blog I've grown more confident in sharing some of my writings so you'll prolly see of that on here too. On here and my writing blog I post my writing in snippets but my Typepad writing blog is I post full writings and archive writings in general.

As the old saying goes... You can follow me too, all over the ding dang internet.  And this isn't everything.  I'm trying to gather myself up and take inventory of what's still out there.  I was met with a surprise when "Amythyst Raine" brought up a lady offering readings on Facebook, not me, but I didn't report the page.  I also discovered a couple pirating websites where you could get "free" downloads of my books and a thousand more books, totally illegal.  I use to report these to my publisher, but there's just way too many out there, can't keep up.  I'll probably be adding to this list as I find more pages and platforms that I've totally forgotten about.  I should have done this a long time ago.
