Vietnam and Me: 3/3

I am horribly sorry. As much as I desired to make it short for everyone to enjoy, I just typed all minds-talk and for the common’s good, I should really split it again into the third part. 

Hope you still have the same curiosity or even more for digging to my relationship with Vietnam!

In the end, I did not make it to Hanoi that was supposed to take a place on December 2017 due to financial reason, one of a very common kind of my issues.

It did appear very promising originally before I received a piece of bigger and more shocking news in my mail-inbox, a few moments after Hanoi’s request. An invitation letter to join the biggest youth festival in the world and located in Russia with free accommodation was there calling my name!

Not that hard to decide even I still had a glimpse of disappointment not to visit Vietnam for the second time because Russia then seized that priority (still I needed to purchase my own ticket which was surely expensive, -you-know-how-far-Indonesia-and-Russia).

And hey, I have another version of my love-hate relationship with this country (doesn’t accurately refer to hate the country yet, just a feeling of displeased of being unable to make great use of a chance to go).

At the middle (or earlier) of 2018, Chi Tra (Cole’s sister, mentioned during my DNC visit) surprised me by a DM on Instagram. That's true, since the meeting we had in DNC in 2016, we made into a good friend 😊 Thanks to Cole! Hahaha

She planned her wedding in December 2018 and I was astonished as she wanted me to be her bridesmaid:’) who wouldn’t feel touched, huh? I was on cloud nine.

Well, it might seem too much to hitch my wagon to a star, but it was my dream to attend another country’s traditional wedding or my best friend wedding, but now I got two at the same time? I involved.  

The writing is on the wall, I got all passion and so keen on this scheme. Checking on the travel website has been part of my daily activities during office hours (sorry to my previous company;”)). I even had a vision of what I should wear and how I would modify an Islamic version of Ao Dai (Traditional Vietnamese dress I have been dying to wear). Afraid to fall into the same issues, I have arranged my financial strategy and quite less worried because hey not to mention, I work now! LOL Say bye to drive a hard bargain to my campus or parent for my travel this time:’)

But it was just a temporary fun. Allah has His own decision and it sure always is the best and absolute. He said “no” again this time. I sadly could not make it because my new company had asked me to stand-by in my current location now (Malaysia) to start my new job, in the same boat I plan to fly to Vietnam.

Having said that, as a human, I felt troublesome a little bit because it's so hard to see someone I loved got disappointed at me. Now, all things considered, I am renewing my promise and plan, although 2017 and 2018 were not about me meeting my Vietnam again, may Allah grant and reunite us on 2020 or on the best timing, Vietnam! No more missing the boat, In Sha Allah! I hold my feet to the fire!

Type Talk . Neville Brody

The last type talk of the year was one which I was really looking forward to. It featured probably one of the best graphic designers currently living, Neville Brody.

His talk was very influential, speaking about his career and the works he produced. Leading a very type based career it was interesting to see how his work moves on with the times and how he also took type from the past and reintroduced them back into the world.

It was amazing to be in the same room with a creative whose work I have loved and followed for many years. Inspiring.

Some notes I took during the talk- -Stuff that catches your eye in environment, gives more unique work as well as being more personal -Just because something is legible doesn't mean it guarantees communication -Don't get lazy and allow your computer to sort layout and text for you -Magazine -transwirld skateboarding                    Beach culture                    Bark Ocean -Get the layout for magazine articles from reading the article, what it's about and how they're feeling as well as the emotion it shows

-If it's a music article,listen to the music and see where it takes you. doing this will take every person a different way which is ok -As a designer you decided width of text boxes, spaces between, don't let the computer decide for you -Be open to the process as you work because sometimes you find better solutions than where you think you were getting -When you think you're done with something,go back and tweak it so it's more individual and the person next to you wouldn't have done -Type is directed by the type, design together not separate -Crop images to make them more interesting -If given a title, don't go for the obvious word to make big, take it somewhere else -Create numerous versions as it gives options to the clients, they may end up picking more than one

Bruno Maag Type Talk 

Unfortunately, the Bruno Maag talk was Bruno-less as he had been unable to attend. Nonetheless, we had two agency workers (Richard Bailey and Eleni Beveratou) from Dalton Maag come in to speak to us about the company and the principles they follow. 

The in-depth talk revealed projects that they had both been a part of. Clients who they work for can vary between the well-known or  private, independent cases, such as those who are in need of a specific type face for their own brands. Other examples include LUSH, NOKIA and the BBC. 

Each project demonstrated the development process for each typeface. Serifs, heights, width, spacing and length have all had to adapt to suit the preferences of the client. 

The image above revealing the word ‘MY’, is one example of how the typographic artists have developed the intricate sections of a Calligraphists art work. This had resulted in a cleaner version of the original piece.

The approach is used for each letter within every font, applied also in every language. 

From the image above, showing a range of texts, it highlights how Dalton Maag have developed a series of typefaces for NOKIA, as they had to produce instructions for the products in a range of languages. ‘It was probably our biggest project and it’s what made our company grown from 5 people to about 45′. Towards the end of the talk, we had some questions and answers, discussing information on internships and how to go about finding a career.
