A true case study of the American Healthcare System:

I had an appointment with my OBGYN for my yearly well women's exam last week. Which includes a pap smear and a breast exam. During the breast exam, my doc found a lump. She gave me a number to call and ordered up an ultrasound.

I call the number and this happens:

"hi yes I would like to schedule an ultrasound for a lump found in my breast."

"Have you had a mammogram before?"

"No, I'm only 29, but my doctor said I would just need the ultrasound."

"well you can't get an ultrasound without a diagnostic mammogram first."

And she was kind of mean about it. Like girl I just found out I have a lump in my breast and there's a history of breast cancer in my family (my mom literally just had it and her mom had years ago)! Why you gotta be so mean?

I call back my doctor's office and explain that this receptionist told me I need a mammogram first. And the nurse takes ten minutes to go ask and make sure she's ordering the right thing for me before agreeing that I need the mammogram first. She orders it.

I call back the ultrasound/mammogram place. I tell the (thankfully different) receptionist that I need to schedule a diagnostic mammogram and then an ultrasound. She takes my details down.

"Wait. You're only 29?"

"Yes."

"You're too young for a mammogram!"

"That's what I thought but I was told to get one."

"Hang on let me put you on hold."

Thus goes the next 20 minutes of this receptionist trying to make sure I get the right scan. Finally, she comes back.

"Okay, so you do need a mammogram."

"Great, can I schedule one?"

"So because you're not 30 yet and this is a first time for you, you're going to get the ultrasound first and THEN the mammogram."

"Wait but I thought the mammogram, being diagnostic, had to be first."

"Normally yes, but you're not 30 yet and this is your first time, so the ultrasound will be first."

"... okay... can I schedule that, then?"

"Yes, and they can be the same day! You'll have the ultrasound and then the mammogram about 30 minutes later!"

"Cool, when can this be?"

"Our next available appointment isn't until June!"

It is currently April. My doctor is pretty sure it's a cyst that comes and goes with hormones, so it very well might be gone by then! Which is what I'm hoping for, but you'd think finding a lump in someone's breast, especially someone who has a history of breast cancer from her mom and grandma, would get quicker appointments. I also dont understand the whole ultrasound before a mammogram thing when the mammogram was to be used to make sure something was even there before using the ultrasound??? Also that first receptionist was mean and I really hope she isn't like that with patients who have diagnosed cancer and are just trying to get treatment. This entire experience so far has just been weird.
