sisters | By Nevi Ayu E.
I pray that the kids in Palestine can also celebrate eid while playing sparklers in a safe and free environment, just like the kids in my neighbourhood. Like, the only explosion people hear in their lifetime should only be the ones coming from petasan! Or that puff rice machine thing!

Nossa Irmã Mais Nova (2015), dir. Hirokazu Kore-eda.

Review originalmente postada: 14/Fev/2023 no Letterboxd.

Movies watched in 2024
Our Little Sister (2015, Japan)
Director & Writer: Hirokazu Kore-eda (based on the manga by Akimi Yoshida)
Mini-review:
Hirokazu Kore-eda is the master of slice-of-life cinema (something I already knew, of course). He's just the best at seamlessly putting together everyday vignettes and situations, like in this case. Not much happens in the movie, but all the characters are so complex and fascinating, even the ones that only show up a few times. The movie really draws you in and makes you feel part of these characters' lives. The star-studded cast does a fantastic job, showcasing the naturalistic acting style and the homely chemistry that characterize Kore-eda's films. And the cinematography is lovely as well, obviously. So yeah, Our Little Sister is classic Kore-eda and a must-watch for his fans.

I know that the reason I put Umimachi Diary very low on my priority manga buying list is because the series is barely popular (I dunno why Panini MX was betting on it, as Yoshida Akimi's Banana Fish is HER MOST popular work, but I GUESS, Umimachi is slightly more generally accessible than other of her contemporary works, and it might have been part of the BF license package). But, I love myself a slice of life/coming of age nice little story that connects a lot of characters (although the only other one I can think of i probably Shimura Takako's Koiiji or Musume no Iede... and MAN, these two kinda get messy on the connections and character cast and their stories).
It's a small town that somehow everyone has a family member or friend or coworker that is related to another character and so and so. So, I can totally buy that because of the size of the town (says the one that has also watched PLENTY of k-dramas that take place in many coastal towns and tend to have big casts that intertwine with each other, too).
I dunno, it's the whole "chill" factor what attracts me of this series. Same in a sense of Insomnia After School, I guess? There's not too much conflict (besides the necessary for drama), and sometimes I need to chill from others that I might be buying and reading (I say that, but turns out a great majority of the series I buy right now are pretty chill, lmao).
*Okay, I guess one reason I could give Panini for licensing this is that the Koreeda Hirokazu's live action adaptation movie ALSO exists, and I see it's more well-known than the manga itself overseas (i just went through the tag, and it is dominated by the movie's screencaps/gifs), however I'm drawing a blank because, there's a slight chance the movie was projected in one of those Japanese Cinema festivals that certain other distributor may have done during the past few years... ALL I know it's that I only went to the one(s) in 2016 -17 and I BARELY remember this was one of them.
