Louis, Liam, Harry, and Niall will remain lifelong friends.
The Circumstances Leading to Zayn’s Departure
On March 25, it was announced that Zayn Malik would be leaving One Direction (hereafter referred to as 1D) because he wanted to live as a "normal 22-year-old."
After successfully completing their Japan tour from late February to early March, the five members returned to the UK for a short break to refresh themselves. Then, on March 11, they kicked off their Southeast Asia tour in Singapore. However, an incident occurred in Phuket, Thailand.
While on vacation in Phuket, Zayn was photographed holding hands and appearing close with a blonde woman who was clearly not his fiancée, Perrie Edwards (of Little Mix). Just prior to this, Perrie had posted a selfie on Instagram without her engagement ring, leading fans to speculate whether the two had broken up and whether Zayn had been unfaithful. The controversy spread rapidly among fans.
Zayn responded on Twitter, apologizing for the misunderstanding and stating that he loved Perrie: "I’m 22 years old... I love a girl named Perrie Edwards. There are a lot of jealous people in the world. I’m sorry if it looked like something else."
(Incidentally, the woman with Zayn was Lauren Richardson, a regular person from Essex, UK, who happened to be on vacation in Thailand. She met Zayn there, took a two-shot photo with him, and posted it on Instagram. However, after 1D fans found her account, she quickly set it to private.)
Shortly after the scandal, on March 19, Zayn suddenly left the Southeast Asia tour midway and returned to the UK alone. A spokesperson stated: "Zayn is leaving the tour due to stress and is returning to the UK to rest."
The remaining four members continued the planned performances in Manila and Jakarta as scheduled. However, on March 25, while fans and likely even the 1D members were still processing the situation, Zayn’s departure was officially announced.
Below are the official statements from Zayn, the remaining four members, and their mentor, Simon Cowell.
Official Statements
One Direction: "Zayn will always be one of us."
"After five incredible years as One Direction, Zayn Malik has decided to leave the group. Niall, Harry, Liam, and Louis will continue as a four-piece and are looking forward to recording their fifth album, set for release later this year, and continuing their world tour."
Zayn’s Statement: *"My time with One Direction has been more than I could have ever imagined. But after five years, I feel it is the right time for me to leave the group. I’m sorry if I’ve disappointed fans, but I need to do what feels right for me. I want to be a normal 22-year-old who can relax and have some private time out of the spotlight.
Louis, Liam, Harry, and Niall will always be my lifelong friends. I know they will continue to be the best band in the world."*
One Direction’s Statement: *"We are deeply saddened by Zayn’s departure, but we fully respect his decision and send him all our love for the future. The past five years have been truly amazing—we’ve been through so much together, and we will always remain close friends.
We will continue as a four-member group and are excited about recording our new album and meeting our fans on the next stage of the world tour."*
Simon Cowell’s Statement: *"I’d like to thank Zayn for everything he has done as part of One Direction. Since I first met him in 2010, I have grown to love and admire him, and I am so proud of how much he has grown in confidence.
Although I am truly sad to see him go, I want to assure fans that One Direction’s future is still incredibly exciting, as Niall, Liam, Harry, and Louis are committed to moving forward."*
The next page contains Zayn’s exclusive interview with The Sun following his departure from the group.

One Direction Japan Tour
February 24 – March 2 ON THE ROAD AGAIN TOUR 2015
Directioners’ Passionate Thoughts
Tokyo (Manami): I went to the first day of One Direction’s (1D) On the Road Again Tour 2015 (OTRA Tour) in Tokyo!! I had been waiting for this for nine months, and it was absolutely worth it. Seeing 1D live for the first time was an emotional rollercoaster! Harry Styles speaking Japanese ("Minna Kawaii♡"), Louis Tomlinson’s smile, Niall Horan’s guitar, Liam Payne’s energetic talk, and Zayn Malik’s stunning high notes!!!! Even though my seat was far away, I was just so happy to be in the same place as the boys, breathing the same air, and singing the same songs together.♡ I’m so glad I love 1D. Thank you for coming to Japan. I LOVE ONE DIRECTION!
Shiga Prefecture (Misaki): I went to the OTRA Tour in Kyocera Dome Osaka! It was absolutely amazing! Harry’s "Toilet de Codesca?" was so funny! I will never forget this concert. The surprise was a success, too!
Chiba Prefecture (Yurika): I went to the OTRA Tour! Just hearing their voices on CD makes me cry, but hearing them live almost made me feel like I was going to die (lol)! I was so happy to hear Harry speaking so much Japanese!
Gifu Prefecture (Ayami): The opening song was “Clouds,” my favorite track from FOUR! The excitement of knowing the concert was about to begin and the happiness of finally meeting the boys filled my heart. I’ll be living off this happiness for months.
Ishikawa Prefecture (Chiharu): This was my first concert ever!!! I was so moved! I love 1D♡ LOVE♡ LOVE♡ LOVE♡
Gifu Prefecture (Haruka): I attended the concert on February 24th. It was my first-ever live show, and since it was for my favorite band, I completely lost myself in the moment! Niall wore the Japanese national soccer team uniform during the encore, which was so awesome♪
Osaka Prefecture (Ayuka): I went to the OTRA Tour on the 24th and 25th!! It was truly, truly, truly the best. I couldn’t believe I got to hear "Ōkini" live! 1D, I love you, Ōkini!!!!
Kanagawa Prefecture (Misora): I had VIP seats, so I was super close to the boys♡ They were so cool that I cried the whole time (lol). Their singing was amazing!! I felt like I wanted to go to every single performance… but even that wouldn’t be enough (lol). I was thrilled to hear Harry’s Japanese tweets and the Japanese he spoke during the concert. Someday, I want to see them from the front row! The boys have fulfilled their dreams and come this far, so I will work hard to achieve mine too! (^^)
Shiga Prefecture (Shinka): Last time they came to Japan, I couldn’t get a ticket, so this time felt like a dream (and 5SOS was the opening act, too!!). The moment I saw 1D, I burst into tears… Just the thought of being in the same space as them made me so happy, and I kept crying over and over again…!! This concert reaffirmed my dedication to supporting them forever. I LOVE 1D ♥
Aichi Prefecture (Yuka): Zayn, who hadn’t been feeling well in Australia, recovered in Japan and gave his best performance. It was truly the best time of my life!! Thank you!!
Chiba Prefecture (Mamenbo): I attended a 1D concert! Ever since it was announced that 5 Seconds of Summer (5SOS) would be the opening act, I had been so excited! Having two globally popular bands perform together made me incredibly happy!
Kumamoto Prefecture (Miariko): I attended the OTRA Tour on March 1st. Seeing the boys with my own eyes, after only ever seeing them on TV or in books, made me cry uncontrollably. The concert was so much fun, and at the end, I cried again thinking about when I’d be able to see them next… Now, my new goal is to attend a concert in England!!!
Shizuoka Prefecture (Akiko): I love all five of them so much. The final show on March 2nd was absolutely incredible.♡ Thank you for coming to Japan!!! I hope you all continue to be the cool and adorable group that you are.♡
Gifu Prefecture (Yukari): I attended the concert for three days. I was thrilled when they performed "Happily" in Osaka on the first day♡ It’s the song that makes me happiest. On March 1st, I got to see the members’ faces up close next to the sub-stage without looking through a screen! I was beyond happy to see my favorite boys♡ When they waved at me and blew kisses, I screamed like crazy. Thank you, Harry, Niall, Liam, Louis, and Zayn, for these wonderful memories!♡
Osaka Prefecture (Haruka): The OTRA Tour, my first-ever live concert, has ended… I still can’t believe they’re no longer in Japan… But their performance was beyond incredible!! I’m looking forward to their next show in Japan, especially in Osaka! Thank you, boys!
Yamagata Prefecture (Mayoru): The OTRA Tour was the best. It was my first live concert and my first VIP experience.♡ Thank you for coming to Japan for 10 days, for speaking so much Japanese, tweeting, and making every moment of the six-day tour unforgettable…♡ I’ve been waiting since you said, "Let’s meet again." I’m already looking forward to it.♡
Gunma Prefecture (Yukino): Seeing them in real life, after only ever watching them on screens, made me love them even more.♡ I can’t wait for them to come to Japan again!!!
This is an excerpt from the survey postcards submitted as a gift to readers of INROCK issues 375 and 376. Thank you for your participation.

Favorite comics covers : 1990's Incredible Hulk Vol.1 #377 cover by artist Dale Keown and inker Bob McLeod.
The issue that used Bruce Banner/the Hulk's traumatic past (what happened in his childhood with his parents) and comics continuity (particularly issue #312 by Mantlo & Mignola), to begin a new cycle with a brand new persona (the Merged Hulk/Professor Hulk, closely associated with the Pantheon era that would start after this issue).
Rest in peace Peter David (September 23, 1956 – May 24, 2025).

When was the early medieval period in Ireland?
A big topic that you might not be aware of in history is "periodisation". This is the debate over when certain periods begin and end. Transitions from one time into another is a gradual process. The lines between ages get blurry and a lot of typing gets dedicated to finding where we can pinpoint places of change.
When ages begin and end can change from place to place too. Society in England was completley transformed during the Victorian era, while life for a Russian serfs remained the same.
For the early medieval period in Ireland, there have been many proposed time lines and I feel that a good introductory post to this blog is defining when exactly it is.
The most commonly accepted dates for the beginning of the early medieval period in Ireland are the fall of the Roman Empire in 476AD or the arrival of saint Patrick in 432AD. Now, I'm not touching whether or not Rome actually fell in 476 with a ten foot pole. Thats what most people agree so we'll just go with that.
I will absolutely be making a post on Patrick and Armagh another time but for now, pretending we have absolutely no idea who Patrick is, what makes this one guy a big deal? Well, he is the very first written source from Ireland. Saint Patrick's Confessio and his letter to the warlord Coroticus take Ireland out of prehistory which is monumental. Although we now know that his role in Ireland's conversion is super overblown, he is one of the seminal figures in Irish Catholicism, and the introduction of Christianity is probably the biggest change the island experiences.
Tumblr media
While the fall of Rome is important, the trading ties that the Empire that led to fortunes of certain dynasties growing also meant that when those ties fell through so did their influence. The decline of Romano-Britain also meant opportunities for raiding and slaving, very popular hobbies for the early Irish.
On the other end of the spectrum, what ends the earky medieval period. Actually, somethings similiar have been proposed for it too. Major changes in religion on the island, and the influence of a foreign power, being Anglo-Norman England, both in the twelvth century.
This time, the change was not going from one religion to another but some major reforms. Encouraged by some reformers like Saint Malachy and the home church in Rome, Ireland was pulled into more mainstream practices. The monastic system that defined Irish Christianity was brought under heel by the introduction of continental European orders such as the cistereans. Marriage practices were reformed and the diocese system asserted bishops over abbots. The changes are too wide to cover here but aside from small pockets, the Irish church was transformed.
The second big cause for the end of the early medieval period was the arrival of the Anglo-Normans. Again, this is such a dense topic that its impossible to go over every aspect of it, especially in a post about periodisation. The Normans brought castles, much more intense urbanisation, a law system completely foreign to the Irish one, new language, new systems of land division, a new system of goverment. Areas under Anglo-Norman control were changed.
In summary, the early medieval period in Ireland is from the 5th to 12th centuries. Several different events play a role in how we define this range. In my personal opinion Patrick's writings are a very good point to start and the arrival of the Anglo-Normans has a very solid sense of finality.
Thank you for reading :3

A very rare gilt-bronze 'dragon head' handle, Eastern Han Dynasty.
FROM THE MOUTH OF THE DRAGON: A RARE MASTERPIECE FROM THE AGE OF BRONZE
Peering out with grandeur and might, this intricately cast dragon’s head is a rare and spectacular example of Han dynasty metal work of unparalleled provenance. With each scale, whisker, tooth and horn delicately rendered with life-like precision and accentuated with liberal gilding, the present head is as much a piece of art as it is a symbol – a lasting homage to the mastery of an unknown ancient craftsman and the power of his mighty patron.
Since the earliest recorded sources, dragons have played a crucial role in Chinese cosmology. Seen as harbingers of good tidings, life-giving rains and benevolent rulers, the piercing eyes, cloudlike mane and fierce jaws of the dragon have long been associated with power and majesty. Though the present head is rightly considered a work of art in its own right, the piece was likely once produced as a handle to a larger organic vessel, long since degraded in antiquity. Fitting snugly in the hand, this elegant fitting is remarkably ergonomic and invites the viewer to hold it; capturing one’s senses with its regal appearance and tactile exterior.
Fewer than ten dragon handles of this rare type and period appear to be known, produced in a variety of related designs and preserved in important collections across the world: one excavated from a Han dynasty tomb no. 2 at Ganquan in Hanjiang, Jiangsu province, illustrated in Wenwu, 1981, no. 11, p. 6, fig. 15 and pl. 2:5; a second from the Eastern Han tomb of Xianyu Huang (dated to 165 CE) in Wuqing county, Hebei province, illustrated in Kaogu Xuebao, 1982, no. 3, pl. 19:2; a third, excavated from a brick factory in Xipang village, Koutian township, Yanshi, preserved in the Luoyang Museum, illustrated on the Museum’s website; a fourth from the collection of Charlotte C. and John C. Weber, preserved in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (accession no. 1992.165.25) (Fig. 1); a fifth from the collection of Sir Joseph Hotung, now in the British Museum, London (accession no. 2022,3034.27); a sixth, in the Sakamoto Collection at the Nara National Museum (accession. no. 1317-377); a seventh, included in Ancient Chinese and Ordos Bronzes, Hong Kong Museum of Art, Hong Kong, 1990, cat. no. 117, and later sold at Christie’s New York, 16th September 2010, lot 917; an eighth from the H. K. Burnet Collection, sold in our London rooms, 4th April 1941, lot 382 and more recently at Woolley & Wallis, 24th May 2023, lot 418; and a ninth from the Worch Collection, illustrated alongside the present, in Umehara Sueji, Shina kodo Seikwa / Selected Relics of Ancient Chinese Bronzes from Collections in Europe and America, Osaka, 1933, pt. III, vol. I, pl. 64a.
