7. Catch Me As I Fall by @this-world-of-beautiful-monsters [Bellatrix/Lily, T, 5.8k] 🌼💔 This fic is a wonderful AU of Lily befriending Bellatrix at Hogwarts. How she slowly changes, how she still is roped into the war. Just spectacular!

8. (give me) the first taste by @iamsiriuslyriddikulus [Narcissa/Lily, M, 4.4k] 💔🌿 Narcissa and Lily as hot moms smoking weed!!! Yes!! This Muggle AU is so well thought-out. The characters are so memorable. (Also I'm a sucker for flangst).

9. Love in a Hopeless Place by @dragonsandotters-dh [Remus/Narcissa, T, 4.6k] 💔🐺 So much hurt but also so much comfort. Draco gets bitten by Greyback. A heart-wrenching and hopeful look into the aftermath.

10. Male Bonding by musigneus [Remus/Severus, E, 9.8k] 🔥👀 This is angsty fuck-or-die to the max. Trapped in a cellar before the full moon. But it's SO GOOD and a somewhat hopeful ending.

11. Open a Vault For Me by Sevanna_OHera [Charity/Severus, M, 3.4k] 💔🧪 I found this pairing recently, and the angst level is off the charts. So much hope and longing in this fic and also a canon-compliant ending.

12. Table for One by @littlesixxwrites [Dean/Blaise, T, 3.2k] 🌼🎄 I LOVE THIS SHIP. Bean is the cutest. This fic has instantly smitten Blaise and equally enamored Dean. Lovely fluffy fic that made me squeal with happiness.

13. Maybe This Time (alternatively: once more, with feeling!) by @wanderingdonut [Regulus, G, 4.6k] 🤣👻 THIS FIC!! I died laughing from this fic, then I came back to life cackling and died all over again. Ghost Regulus is perfect. Snarky and entitled and wallowing in death lol.

14. toxicology by @batmansymbol [Hermione, G, 2.9k] 💔💌 A fascinating dive into the possible implication of Harry being a horcrux for so many years. I love how we view everything through Hermione's unreliable narration.

15. just a few sweaters by Prettything_uglylie [Molly, G, 2.4k] 🌼🧶 This story is a cup of hot cocoa in front of the fire. Warm and sweet and content. I adore it with my whole heart.

oi, so, im not a fiction writer, lemme get that out here now. BUT I've been playing around writing fanfic for a while now and I've finished two stories:

I've got soul (but i'm not a soldier) (a ghosty regulus guiding draco and sirius, wolfstar, drarry & jeggy hints)

and

If there was anyone to ever get through this life with their heart still intact (they didn't do it right) (panville, muggle au, pansy centred grief drugs and other fun stuff)

but what i didn't expect was to like, miss them??? i put so much of myself into these silly little words and had such a good (and often emotional) time doing it that I'm like... oh. guess this is goodbye then??? I'm writing a few other bits now (wolfstar obv) and i keep glancing back to those 2 fics and being like oh i wonder what they're up to :(

i remember you mentioning a panville Far From the Madding Crowd au a while back (i think years ago by now lol) and ever since i've been obsessed with that idea. it's so perfect for them!! the 2015 adaptation has the most neville-like gabriel oak ever, and carey mulligan's bathsheba is so similar to pansy: wildly independent, a little reckless, deeply determined to do what's best for herself. what did you have in mind for that kind of story, if you don't mind me asking? i'm fascinated by how pansy and neville would translate into that kind of situation - what would change, what would remain, and also who out of all the hp characters is both charming and evil enough to be troy 👀

I haven't ever done like a direct translation (The Secretary follows the film Secretary but isn't a simple one to one adaptation). I think someone should do this if they haven't already because it aligns so well. But oh, man. Troy! Maybe Cormac? But not really? I would honestly probably have an OC in a similar role. I have thought a lot about Pansy coded women in historical romance, and the Situations to be had with various Nevilles (and Percys). With Neville it's mostly a lot of Sexual Awakenings and sort of NC-17 Secret Garden vibes with gardens coming back to life, etc. With Percy it's the uptight mid-Victorian piano teacher who is a virtuoso from an impoverished background brought in to distract wild child aristocrat Pansy who is rebelling against an upcoming marriage, very Portrait of a Lady on Fire but het. If I didn't think they would get chucked straight into the naughty bin in traditional publishing I would probably write them lol

2023 FFRC - April 🌷

It's finally hammock weather in Western Canada, folks! And we've been enjoying watching the hockey playoffs from the patio entertainment area we set up once the snow melted - well, I don't know if the word "enjoying" should be used when the team we hate most in the world is moving on to the 2nd round - but it's been exciting anyway.

We've also been sick at our house for most of the month but we're finally starting to come out of it. My Bethy still sounds like Miley Cyrus when she talks - but other than some low-key coughs, she's no longer down with a fever, so we're happy about that.

Continuing along - it's rugby season - so that means a lot of driving to away games to cheer on the Spartans (which means a LOT of reading). I've read more this month than I have ever read. I was also really focused on finishing up the 'extreme' tasks at the @fanfic-reading-challenge - and I finished a few days ago. I'll keep going until I've completed all the tasks in the challenge but I can do that over the course of the rest of the year. 🎉

So as you can see, this month I read 2.3 million words, cracking over 7 mill total - and read 922 chapters (of various lengths), and 107 full (and sometimes long) stories. I was working on some fandom challenges and let me tell you - it was harder than it looked!

Why you should read: THE BEAR FANFICTION! I'm not a Carmy/Sydney fangirl and that is what this fandom is saturated with, so I was HAPPY to find that someone wrote a story where Carmy meets a girl at an meeting and they just GET each other. And neither one is a perfect human - she doesn't SAVE him from himself or anything. They just bear each other's burdens and are THERE for eachother. This is just gorgeous.

Hello, Sunshine by Wonderlandleighleigh (Lenny/Midge - M 20/20)

Summary: It's June of 1962, and to celebrate being a year clean, Lenny rents a little house in Malibu, inviting Midge to join him.

Why you should read: I got back on my nonsense with the season premiere of TMMM and since I got 3 minutes of Lenny and now have to wait like 8 episodes to see him again, I thought I'd reread old favourites. This one is set post S4 sometime in the future - when Lenny has been in rehab and wants to make things right with Midge. It's SO good and captures their characters perfectly and makes me want to sit on the beach with good friends (and a handsome Jewish comic).

Love in the Time of Quarantine by @melanoradrood (Neville/Pansy - E 5/5)

Summary: a case study on what happens when a bratty sub spends eighteen months in quarantine and gets so desperate she will have sex with the shy boy from boarding school that promises her orgasms. aka muggle panville tinder au during the great panini

Why you should read: FIRSTLY - Neville is one of my most favourite characters in all of Potterdom and I wanted him to be happy almost from the very first moment we met him. Secondly - it's funny. Hot and funny and sweet. I mean, Neville wants to save her dying(dead) plants that happened to be in the back of her tinder pictures. He's a delight. And this fic is also a delight. You should read it!

The Raven - For the Rare and Radiant Maiden Series by @drollicpixiefanfic (Wenvier - E 3 fics)

Summary: Xavier Thorpe didn’t exactly expect Wednesday to use the cell phone he purchased for her. It was a ridiculous idea, a whim, a fancy. But something had compelled him to try. So, it was with some shock, two weeks into their break from Nevermore, that Xavier’s phone buzzed on his nightstand.

Why you should read: I'm certain I rec'd this before - but now there is a third story that came out this month (and IT IS AMAZING) - so I could just rec that third story, or I could link you to the whole thing and make you reread it (just like I did). Post season 1 - kinky hot but super tender as well. Funny. Just lovely. and I'm never going to complain about a Xavier PoV. He's my fave. Read this one - if you're not into Wenvier yet, make this your first foray. Come ship with me!

This exercise showed me that I tend to use my first line to very clearly set up my stories—I struggle with reining in the exposition when I write, and I think my very explain-y first lines reflect that. 😂 I’d love to do more dialogue beginnings, or descriptive-emotion beginnings, or throwing-you-into-the-action beginnings!

I've recently been watching Succession and the dark humor element reminded me of your work and you've said before you're a big succession fan. As any completely stable dramione consumer would, I couldn't help but try to fit these two idiots into a succession au but me being me I resigned myself to ask a more talented person about how they would go about making setting up this au? Would Lucius be Logan? Would you give Draco siblings and how would he deal with that? How would Hermione come into this and how would she and Draco scheme for corporate takeover?

anon...what have you done to me? this ask has consumed me. swallowed me whole and spit me back out ass backwards. but listen, i tried. i tried to keep it dramione. the issue is that it wouldn't make the best dramione story, imo, but it would make a decent panville.

this is gonna be a whole thing, so buckle up. i'm walking you through my thought process.

shiv first, for once in her life: my initial thought was ginny (only girl in a family of boys, always fighting for her place, fiery attitude, etc.) but shiv's dynamic with tom is so essential and when it comes to that toxic sort of relationship, i think pansy parkinson fits better. she's cutthroat and not overly sentimental. which brings me to--

tom: who is easy to underestimate and would neeeeever be the dom in the relationship with shiv!pansy? neville longbottom. obviously he's a particularly shitty version of neville who's never quite fit in and takes his power trips where he can find them, but he is genuinely in love with his wife and she's never taken him seriously. you know who does take him seriously?

greg: gregory goyle. and not just because his name is greg already! his cleverness is constantly underestimated but he was sorted into slytherin for a reason. despite being known a bit of an oaf, he's always craved proximity to power and knows how to play the part of a cronie. also the homoerotic undercurrent between him and neville!tom are very important to me.

logan: severus snape. he could be many things in this au, whether it's a uni potions professor (like those exist, lmao) with only one fellowship to offer or it could be a company. he loves a power trip and doesn't care about traumatizing any of his "kids." 1000% doesn't think anybody can do it better than he can, and he might be right.

kendall: draco malfoy, obviously. he's always seen himself as the favorite and, having grown up in the lap of luxury, he's used to getting what he wants. wholeheartedly believes that he's the best option despite being crippled by insecurity and ever so occasionally, by empathy. he wants to trust people even though it keeps getting his ass kicked. would absolutely ask for logan!snape's help to cover up some legal trouble that he gets in and mistake logan!snape's willingness to help for love when it's really leverage.

stuey: blaise zabini. kendall!draco thinks they're allies but blaise is more cutthroat and skeevy than kendall!draco could have predicted. growing up with a mom who regularly marries for money and whose spouses mysteriously die shortly after their nuptials, stuey!blaise knows how to scheme. doesn't have a heart, definitely encourages kendall!draco's coke problem.

roman: theodore nott. hey, daddy issues! rarely taken seriously despite being weirdly earnest and caring deeply about the fellowship/company. will always sacrifice what needs to be sacrificed if it's in the "family's" best interest, including/not limited to some really shady shit. degradation kink.

gerri: narcissa malfoy. a regal woman with a deep understanding of how logan!snape works. she has a soft spot for roman!theo and tries to keep him out of trouble despite kendall!draco's disgust at their bond. knows she's a hot piece of ass with a clever brain to back it up.

connor: percy weasley. this guy is more ego than actual brain cells. street-stupid. dumb enough to still feel empathy for his "siblings" when that kind of weakness automatically disqualifies him from any of the prestige he craves.

willa: lavender brown. younger than connor!percy, lavender is used to being overlooked as a bit of a bimbo and has learned to use it to her advantage. as an artiste, money is her bottom line because her true love is her craft and staying with someone as insufferable as connor!percy is worth it for the funding. for now, at least.

comfry: astoria greengrass. chic, aloof, and eternally out of reach for poor greg!gregory (lmao), she puts up with kendall!draco's attempts to stay relevant because he pays pretty well.

like i said, it would be panville and it would be delightfully toxic. shiv!pansy and roman!theo would be so fucking caustic when they fight, the sexual tension between roman!theo and gerri!narcissa would be palpable, and watching kendall!draco get fucked over in every which way would be 🤌🤌🤌

What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

My “A thousand eyes and one” has the angstiest ending, and “The Last Touch of Winter” is the sadest.

Do you write crossovers? If so what’s the craziest one you’ve written?

I’ve started a GoT/Silmarillion crossover and it was funny in my head, but to be quite honest, I don’t think it really works.

Have you ever received hate on a fic?

No real hate fortunately. Someone did not agree with my Hermione, but that was all..

Do you write smut? If so what kind?

My only fic rated M is “The Perks of Casting a Patronus” a Panville fic and I included the sex because I thought it was necessary for the story. So, definitely not an expert on smut here. 🤣

Have you ever had a fic stolen?

I don’t think so.

Have you ever had a fic translated?

No, I’m thinking about translating “Phoenix Potion” into German but I’m not sure about that.

What’s your all time favorite ship?

Oh, oh, oh. I have so many..... Faramir and Eowyn was my first ship, then Tuor and Idril, then John Sheridan and Delenn from Babylon 5 and I have written for Jonsa, Dramione and Deckerstar.

Whats a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

I want to finish my drabble series “A thousand eyes and one” and I have happy ending in mind and a creepy ending. I also plan to finish Bittersweet. I really want to finish that. It’s all finished in my head. But I have been unable to write Jonsa after the show ended (apart from my Historical AU Judicatrix - which I finished after the show).

What are your writing strengths?

I think my strength is dialogue. And plotting and foreshadowing.

What are your writing weaknesses?

I am very self-conscious about my action scenes and I’m not a very poetic writer. 

What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

I’d love to do that, but I haven’t had an opportunity yet, only some Latin in Phoenix Potion.

What was the first fandom you wrote for?

GoT and Jonsa in 2016 I’ve been writing for five years now!

Phoenix Potion - this had been in my head for years and then I started and just wrote it down.

Hello friend! Awww thank you so much! This is so nice to hear, I’m so grateful! 🙈 Pansy as a cat just makes so much sense, and you can magnify the extremes of her personality more in this AU which I find so nice to illustrate.

I do love AUs a lot! Coming from Reylo where a major percentage of the 26K fics is made up of AUs (of anything you can think of from modern to the most crack, it exists).. I love canon but AUs help explore the characters more especially in different settings which is so fun 😁

My favourite AU.. Canon (anything where they’re graduated and are working) , Muggle AUs are also a favourite… I also came up with my own Panville Victorian AU on Twitter... bc I love them in Victorian Clothes and old-timey words and customs and greenhouse 🙈

Lol just kidding. No further stories/epilogues are planned. The story ends there with the intention that the timelines converge with The Right Thing To Do. The HEA is implied. We talked in more depth about where Draco was on the podcast, but essentially he was at an uncharted Malfoy estate with Kreacher.

Pac the way you write Panville is so unique and yet every fic is so distinctive, could you talk a bit about how you see their characterization and dynamic?

The setting for each story makes a difference! In A Dress with Pockets I was working within someone else's AU, so Pansy's characterization leans into what was established for that universe. Bright Objects is a Muggle AU set in the United States, and they both reflect that, as well as their age. Remember One Thing isn't a sequel to A Strong Cup of Tea in a Warm Glass House, but it could be. They're very much the same people, but the 8th Year romance between them in Remember One Thing was quite a bit more hard-won. I'm excited to show more of Neville's arc and inner life in Remember One Thing. RoT is my longest Panville piece by far, and I love being able to dig into him more thoroughly.

One of the major aspects of Pansy's characterization I tend to mix up is how comfortable she is with casual sex. Pureblood values would 100% push some version of purity culture, at least on girls. I see her as being anxious and reserved until she'd gained some experience, at which point the light switch would go off and she'd be unabashedly super into it, whether she expressed her love of sex with multiple partners or within a monogamous relationship (Neville's a lucky man and knows it).

One thing I really love about Pansy's characterization in Remember One Thing is that we're seeing her almost entirely in her safe place. Acerbic Pansy is still in evidence when she's around other people, but when she's only with Neville there's no guard at all. She never has a harsh word for him. She isn't even actually closed off. And I love that she doesn't fight that. She is 100% a cat at home with her person, showing her belly, whereas when I've written her in the past she's been in the process of opening up to him. This dynamic is what makes Neville's experience so damn sad—he's alone and in exile in his place of security, unable to turn to his main confidante and source of comfort. So far he's been a bit more of a closed book, but that will change. And as sad as they both are, hopefully it's clear that they had been incredibly close before her injury and had a strong friendship and intense sexual connection. All of that is still patiently waiting for them. Anyway it's been so lovely writing them both in the part that comes "after." 💜

Pac, do you ever think of writing a Panville in Neville's POV? Because Pansy is always surprise when she has any feelings, but she doesnt verbalize it well, I wonder what goes on inside Neville's head, when that happens

I have a half-finished Panville WIP called Squirrel Trouble that's in Neville POV. It directly addresses this dynamic. It's set in my Love and Other Historical Accidents AU but you don't need to have read any of that fic to read this one. I hope to revisit this and my other WIP soon.

A Dress with Pockets is interesting because they go on for so long without there being a declaration. My headcanon is that when they're physically together, it's a pink haze. They're wrapped up in one another and deeply present in it. Please feel free to imagine Neville often drawing his hand through her hair and whispering "I love you," when she's clearly asleep.

It's kind of subtle, but she's profoundly relaxed and at ease with him from very early on. She's playful and open and adoring in her way. I think he aches for the solidity of verbal confirmation, but he has her in almost every way that counts, which is why her panicked bluff in Costa Rica is so brutal.
