Do you remember the first time you wanted someone and they didn’t want you back?
You were in your first month of college and ready to meet new people and be a part of new spaces after you left that small town. You were ready for a fresh start. You and your roommate bumped into him while he was helping his friends move into the dorm building, Campbell Hall. We call him T. He invited you to a small party at his place, and since you haven’t really met anyone else outside of your Cobb Hall floor, you say yes.
That night you came over and was promptly caught by an RA for underage drinking after some guy playing “Edward 40 Hands” by himself opens the door. Yet all you could think about was T and how cool you thought he was. With his long black hair, deep eyes, and smooth voice, you thought you could let yourself get swept away all over again. His charm was addictive. You wanted it. You wanted to feel those feelings and get carried away into your fantasy dream world with mystery prince charming all over again. You wanted to fight for it, even if it meant fighting with yourself.
You spent months in a routine that went absolutely nowhere and existed in dreamland for far longer than a standard stay. You get a message from him every afternoon asking you to come over. Most days of the week you had a break between classes with enough time to see him, so you did. Knock on the door and he will appear before you, shirtless and horny. He greets you with a warm kiss and the butterflies just pull you directly to his bedroom. On the off days you weren’t having sex, he’d curl up next to you and hold your body so close to his and he’d kiss your neck until he dozed off for the mid afternoon naptime. Sometimes you’d lay your head on his chest and twirl his dark chest hair around your fingers until it was your turn to fall asleep.
You two never left that bedroom. He never took you out on a date and you were never seen in public with him. After that night you went out with your friends and saw T with another woman, it clicked that you were trapped in a spell of good sex and you were never going to be the girlfriend.
It was hard to let go of your addiction. You actually relapsed two more times before you were off of T for good. It hurt knowing that after everything you did to try and hold on to him, it was for nothing. He was never yours to begin with, and it’s one of many lessons you learned in love. How can someone lay their heart out on the table like that and deny any sort of romantic advancements? It’s frustrating when someone leaves the door wide open and then slams it in your face as soon as he can detect you coming in. It’s not like you were breaking in, on the contrary, he freshened up the welcome mat and dusted the doorbell. But YOU… You were not the one that was welcome. You learned from your mistakes and now you can see the signage before you even take a step on anyone’s front porch. It never feels good when you’re trespassing, especially when the person makes you think that you are not intruding. We know the truth now.
