The Prospect of Whitby pub, Wapping, London

I came to this awesome historic riverside pub in the afternoon for drink. I thought, as it was the last Saturday before Christmas, it would be quiet because everybody else would be travelling or shopping. Oh how wrong I was! Still a great place to spend the shortest afternoon of the year,

The Original Sun Hill Station (S1&2)

For fans of the old London/curious as to how the area round the old Sun Hill station in Wapping (Pennington street/Artichoke Hill) looked in 1985, Hostage (02x05) had this rather nice little view from Roy as he drove in.

These two below are the cobbles at the back of the old station on Pennington Street (both directions) that the 'walking feet' credits were filmed walking along. This is how they looked in 2008 (the furthest back that Google Maps go)

At the end of this series (series 2) the station then moved to Kensington.

It's round about now I start to wish I'd started a stand-alone TB Tumblr... 400 year old stone floor at The Prospect of Whitby , Wapping, England.

The Prospect of Whitby is a historic public house on the banks of the Thames at Wapping in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. It lays claim to being the site of the oldest riverside tavern, dating from around 1520.

According to John Stow it was "The usual place for hanging of pirates and sea-rovers, at the low-water mark, and there to remain till three tides had overflowed them". Execution Dock was actually by Wapping Old Stairs and generally used for pirates. The most famous death here was probably that of the infamous pirate, Captain Kidd, who was hanged at the dock in 1701. It is thought that Judge Jeffreys used to watch hangings from the comfort of the pub's balcony. Views from the pub were sketched by both Turner and Whistler.

The February Clean-Up

Well, I think that yesterday's clean up along the river Thames by Wapping was very successful; the twelve volunteers (not all featured in this photo) managed to gather up a 'whopping' 8 or even 9 bags of rubbish. We noticed that there were lots of shipping tags (very harmful to the environment as wildlife could easily get stuck) along with tires which must have fallen off the sides of boats. One of my most surprising finds was a rubber tile - the sort which you often find in nurseries on the floor. Among all of that rubbish, there was of course the normal: bottles, wrappers - things that people just throw on the ground which then gut sucked into the river.

Once again, thank you to the WaSh Wombles - a local litter-picking group - for supplying us with the extra equipment and spreading the word! I think everyone really enjoyed it and I hope that you would like to come again soon!*

otoya had a reputation, a notorious one. if there was a girl within a ten-mile radius, best believe he was out here dropping "you look familiar, have we met before?" like it was his personal slogan. you, his girlfriend, had tolerated it for far too long, but when you caught him giggling at some girl's instagram story reaction, you saw red. 

“you wanna act like you're single? bet. you are single," you texted before blocking him on everything. 

otoya? oh, he panicked. 

so, naturally, he did what any man in distress would do: grand gesture with maximum embarrassment. 

the next day, he pulled up to the most crowded place in town, the starbucks parking lot, strapped with his JBL Xtreme 3, bass boosted to the max. with his hoodie up like a heartbroken soundcloud rapper, he pressed play. 

♪ "i want you to be mine again, baby…" ♪ 

fetty wap’s voice BOOMED through the air like a personal attack on every innocent bystander just trying to enjoy their caramel macchiatos in peace. 

heads turned. people stared. a dog barked. 

but otoya didn’t care. he stood there, dramatically holding the speaker above his head like a tik tok romeo, scanning the crowd for you. 

and then, like his “source” had told him, there you were. 

you. sitting outside with your iced coffee, sunglasses on, ignoring him like he was nothing but a background character in your life. 

he took a deep breath and yelled out your name. “PLEASE! I’M A CHANGED MAN!” 

you took a slow sip of your drink. “oh, word?” 

otoya nodded aggressively. "I DELETED SNAPCHAT FOR YOU!" 

the crowd gasped. someone whispered, “that’s real.” 

you squinted at him. "and the 'close friends' list on instagram?" 

"... gone." 

a dramatic silence fell over the parking lot. even the barista inside stopped mid-order. 

you finally stood up, crossed your arms, and sighed. “fine. but if you even THINK about sending another ‘wyd’ text past 11 PM –” 

"I WON’T! I SWEAR!" 

you rolled your eyes and grabbed his speaker, pausing the music. “come on, romeo. let’s get out of here before someone records this.” 

otoya grinned, slinging an arm around you. the crowd erupted in cheers. someone threw a cake pop at him. 

and as they walked away, the speaker accidentally unpaused. 

♪ "i know my lifestyle is driving you crazy…" ♪ 

you smacked the pause button again. "don't push it, otoya." 

and thus, balance was (temporarily) restored.

London Overground illuminated roundel

The buildings opposite the old station on the corner of Artichoke Hill and Pennington Street in London haven't changed too much other than a grey extension on top of one. They could be the same windows! The streets behind it too are also very similar and don't appear to have changed that much

The old station itself has however completely changed(!!)

The building behind it seems to be pretty much the same though, still has the balcony on the top floor with the metal rail above the small brick wall (though downstairs is now a Domino Pizza)

I have no idea why looking into this stuff fascinates me so much, especially when I'm 14 mins 30 into a recap and I've spent the last half hour looking up the old station and it's surroundings on Google Maps (!)
