Historic Ware County Georgia Church Collapses

Ezekiel Congregational Methodist Church has captured the eye of many photographers over the years. For all who passed it, people would wonder how it was still hanging on. An online friend mentioned it had fallen. Oddly, there was no mention in the newspapers, and according to this image by Paul Peel on Google Maps, it’s been down for at least two months. women artists that you should know about!!

-Judith Leyster (Dutch, 1609-1660)

During her life her works were highly recognized, but she got forgotten after her death and rediscovered in the 19th century. In her paintings could be identified the acronym "JL", asually followed by a star, she was the first woman to be inserted in the Guild of St. Luke, the guild Haarlem's artists.

-Artemisia Gentileschi (Italian, 1593-1656)

"... Si è talmente appraticata che posso osar de dire che hoggi non ci sia pare a lei, havendo fatto opere che forse i principali maestri di questa professione non arrivano al suo sapere". This is how the father Orazio talked about his nineteen year old daughter to the Medici's court in Florence.

In 1611, Artemisia got raped, and she had to Undergo a humiliating trial, just to marry so that she could "Restore one's reputation" , according to the morality of the time. Only after a few years Artemisia managed to regain her value, in Florence, in Rome, in Naples and even in England, her oldest surviving work is "Susanna and the elders".

-Elisabeth Louise Vigèe Le Brun (French, 1755-1842)

She was a potrait artists who created herself a name during the Ancien Règime, serving as the potrait painting of the Queen of France Marie Antoinette, she painted 600 portraits and 200 landscapes in the course of her life.

-Augusta Savage (Afro-American, 1892-1962)

Augusta started making figures when she was a child, which most of them were small animals made out of red clay of her hometown, she kept model claying, and during 1919, at the Palm Beach County Fair, she won $25 prize and ribbon for most original exhibit. After completing her studies, Savage worked in Manhattan steam laundries to support her family along with herself. After a violent stalking made by Joe Gould that lasted for two decades, the stalker died in 1957 after getting lobotomized. In 2004, a public high school, Augusta Fells Savage Institute of Visual Arts, in Baltimore, opened.

-Marie Ellenrieder (German,1791-1863)

She was known for her portraits and religious paintings. During a two years long stay in Rome, she met some Nazarenes (group of early 19th century German romantic painters who wanted to revive spirituality in art),after becoming a student of Friedrich Overbeck and after being heavily influenced by a friend, she began painting religious image, getting heavily inspired by the Italian renaissance, more specifically by the artist Raphael. In 1829, she became a court painter to Grand Duchess Sophie of Baden.

-Berthe Marie Pauline Morisot (French,1841-1893)

Morisot studied at the Louvre, where she met Edouard Manet, which became her friend and professor. During 1874 she participated at her first Impressionist exhibition, and in 1892 sets up her own solo exhibition.

-Edmonia Lewis or also called "wildfire" (mixed African-American and Native American 1844-1907)

Edmonia was born in Upstate New York but she worked for most of her career in Rome, Italy. She was the first ever African American and Native American sculptor to achieve national and international fame, she began to gain prominence in the USA during the Civil Ware. She was the first black woman artist who has participated and has been recognized to any extent by the American artistic mainstream. She Also in on Molefi Kete Asante's list of 100 Greatest African Americans.

-Marie Gulliemine Benoist (French, 1768-1826)

Daughter of a civil servant, Marie was A pupil of Jaques-Louis David, whose she shared the revolutionary ideas with, painting innovative works that have caused whose revolutionary ideals he shared, painting innovative works that caused discussion. She opened a school for young girl artists, but the marriage with the banker Benoist and the political career Of the husband had slowly had effect on her artistic career, forcing her to stop painting. Her most famous work is Potrait of Madeline, which six years before slavery was abolished, so that painting became a simbol for women's emancipation and black people's rights.

-Lavinia Fontana (Italian, 1552-1614)

She is remembered for being the first woman artist to paint an altarpiece and for painting the first female nude by a woman (Minerva in the act of dressing), commissioned by Scipione Borghese.

-Elisabetta Sirani. (Italian, 1698-1665)

Her admirable artistic skills, that would vary from painting, drawing and engraving, permitted her, in 1660, to enter in the National Academy of S. Luca, making her work as s professor. After two years she replaced her father in his work of his Artistic workshop, turning it into an art schools for girls, becoming the first woman in Europe to have a girls' school of painting, like Artemisia Gentileschi, she represent female characters as strong and proud, mainly drawn from Greek and Roman stories. (ex. Timoclea Kills The Captain of Alexander the Great, 1659).

𝐏𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐬 '𝐧 𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐦 𝐑𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐡 𝐌𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭

The Christmas market was always an insanely populated and busy event. And, it was loud — all you could hear for miles were people cheering, yelling, and laughing. 

People from all over the county and towns over yonder made their way to the largest fair within the state, peddling their wares or stocking up on the items that were fiercely popular just once a year. 

You were one of those people, much to your own annoyance. And Bucky’s. 

“C’mon, Peach,” Bucky groaned quietly, his eyes darting over the heads of the crowd. “This is ridiculous—please tell me you brought your list with you?”

“Settle petal,” you said back, and you brandished a considerable piece of paper with handwritten notes all over it. “It’s a good thing we brought the truck instead of Colton, or Bee.”

“Fuckin’ tellin’ me,” he mumbled. “Look at all you gotta get–” You slapped him on the shoulder. “Ow!”

“You big, whiny baby.”

Bucky stuck his tongue out at you in retaliation.

The two of you strode down the lanes of stalls and traders, taking in the sights and smells of all the freshly baked goods and newly picked produce; cinnamon and earth mixed with sugar and spice. 

A stall of oranges was your first stop, and you filled a box with the best of the best, and when you gestured for Bucky to lift it up and carry it, he looked at you, a curious tilt to his head. 

“I want to start making orange jam, or mix it with my peach,” you explained. “Just something new to try, that’s all.”

“Huh. Alright then, angel,” Bucky replied with a shrug. “I’m excited to see what my beautiful wife comes up with.”

Heat crawled up your neck and you ducked your head, muttering, “That’s enough now, c’mon, let’s go.”

Bucky bent and picked up the box, and he carried it while you led him through the stalls full to the brim with vegetables and fruits. Each time something was added, he playfully groaned with exertion and pretended to drop the box. It amused the vendors to no end.

Finally, after what felt like hours on your feet, you finally arrived at the very last few stalls. They were not food or produce vendors, instead, they were piled high to the rafters with knitted crafts — all kinds of dolls, hats, teddies, and toys hung off of rope or were neatly arranged on shelves, proudly showing off the mastery of their creators. 

That was when you spotted it; the perfect creation to end the day’s hunt. “Bucky!”

“What–?” He looked around, staring at you wide-eyed, and you pointed towards the furthest stall.

The rows and rows of Santa hats, knitted and created with what looked to be the softest, fluffiest wool, were beckoning you over; a siren’s call. Heedless to resist, and before you could be held back by Bucky’s call to wait, you jogged over — straight towards the Santa hat that was the colour of peaches. 

“Peach! Don’t run off on me like that–” Bucky gasped, his arms straining to hold the box. “Goddammit, what’ve you found?”

“Look!” you rushed, holding up the hat. 

He stared at it, then at you, and he raised a brow. “No.”

“No?” 

“Nope,” he repeated. “Nope, no. No.”

“I think that translates to yes,” you said, shrugging. And before he could protest, you approached the vendor and paid for the hat. The smile could not be wiped from your face when you turned around to walk back to Bucky, and he sighed in defeat. “There we go,” you sang, “now today is almost perfect.”

“Almost?” Bucky asked incredulously. “You’ve been draggin’ me along like a damned mule all day and that’s not enough–? Don’t you dare put that–” Your laughter cut him off, and you reached up towards his head and swiftly tugged the hat over his dark hair. “Agh!”

“There we go,” you said, stepping back and pulling out your phone for a photo. “Now it’s perfect.”

Bucky turned his back to you, nose in the air, and called over his shoulder while he walked away, “I am done with you, Peach—I’m filing for divorce!” 

“No you are not!” you yelled back, laughing at the way the pom-pom of his hat swayed with his dramatic walk. “I know you’re peachy keen to wear that all the way home!”

You swore you could feel his eyes roll back into his head in mock annoyance; his smile, too. “No I fuckin’ am not!”

Virgil Lamar Ware (December 6, 1949 – September 15, 1963) was an African American eighth-grader shot to death after the Birmingham church bombing. On September 15, 1963, Larry Joe Sims and Michael Lee Farley, age 16, had planned to attend a white supremacist rally and motorcade from the suburb of Midfield to the downtown of Birmingham. The event was canceled after the bombing at the urging of Jefferson County sheriff's deputies. They rode on Farley's motor scooter to the headquarters of the neo-fascist National States' Rights Party where they purchased a Confederate battle flag, which they attached to the scooter before riding toward a Black neighborhood. Upon seeing Virgil and his brother James, who were unaware of the bombing and riding together on a single bicycle, Farley handed Sims a .22 caliber pistol they had bought three days earlier and told Sims to shoot at them to scare them. It ended in Virgil being shot in the cheek and chest. An all-white jury convicted them of second-degree manslaughter, sentenced to seven months of jail, and had their cases suspended by the judge and changed to two years’ probation. Ware was buried in an unmarked grave on the side of the road until May 6, 2004, when he was moved to a burial place with a bronze marker thanks to the donations of the community. Sad story.. 😞😞😔

Jeddito Black-on-yellow Bowl, 1365–1400 C.E., Homol'ovi, Hopi Mesas.

Jeddito Yellow is an Ancestral Hopi pottery, made on and around the Hopi Mesas in north-central Arizona. There are three mesas, called the Hopi Mesas, where most Hopi villages are congregated; they have been continuously occupied for more than a thousand years. However, the Hopi clans there also have a long and intertwining history of of migration, of congregation of clans, of ethnogenesis and becoming. During the great drought of 1275-1292, some of the people who evacuated southern Utah and northeastern Arizona moved to the Hopi Mesas and joined the ancestral Hopi there. Salado polychrome never took a significant hold here; instead, Jeddito Yellow Wares proliferated.

Jeddito Yellow is a ware with many decorative types within it, from black- and brown-on-yellow, to stipple decorated, to the striking and famed Sikyatki Polychrome. It is built of thin coils, high-fired via coal-burning (unique for the Southwest), porcelain-like in their hardness and brittleness, and uses a very fine, almost microscopic temper. It's been speculated, admittedly a bit fancifully (Hargrave, 1935) that this rich and highly polished yellow pottery may have been the golden plates and cups that the Spanish conquistadores heard about when they were searching for the mythical Cibola. They're beautiful enough to be.

Hohokam Red-on-Buff

Some of the earliest painted pottery in the Southwest, Hohokam red-on-buff exists in multiple striking types - Snaketown, Santa Cruz, and Sacaton Red-on-buff being some of the most widespread and distinctive. They are typically unslipped, with bold or hatched repeating designs in red paint. They were made in central and southern Arizona.

Unlike Ancestral Pueblo and Mogollon pottery, which was made with the coil-and-scrape technique, Hohokam pottery was made with a technique called "paddle-and-anvil." It was still coil-built, but the coils used to build the pot were typically bigger than the thin coils of northern and eastern types. To merge the coils and thin the pot, potters used a wooden paddle to strike the outside, and a stone anvil held against the inside to brace against. In this way the coiled walls were thinned, shaped, compressed, and drawn up.

The book in the video for Free as a Bird

The video for "Free As a Bird" is chockablock with references to Beatles songs. We believe every one of their songs is in there somewhere, maybe even including songs that they didn’t release, and we’re working on putting together a comprehensive list.

However, true to form, we got waylaid by a tangent. (Stick with us to the end, we promise it's worth it).

In the scene representing "Paperback Writer" a book is seen on the table closest to the camera:

Tragically this is the clearest shot of the book (you can watch the video here, the book appears at the 3 minute mark). It seems as though it has been intentionally blurred. We’re not ones to back down from a research challenge though!

We tried all the obvious things: it’s clearly not Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, for example, but we weren’t having much luck finding a book with a two-word title (first word slightly shorter), whose author had a longer first name and shorter surname. (Did you know there are 1.5 million books in the Penguin archive collection?)

So we contacted archive@penguinrandomhouse.co.uk (because of course we did). They got back to us quickly, and were very helpful. 

Our correspondent Esmé tried to find a contract for any Penguin book being used in the video, but came up empty. So the Beatles didn’t get permission to use this book. Very interesting, especially since it seems to have been obscured. 

She pointed out that the combination of:

Two line book title

One line author name

Dancing penguin figure (only used between 1940 and 1950)

Is quite rare, so that really narrows the search. 

She suggested that, since it doesn’t appear to have “genre markers” on the sides, it would be from 1947 or later. However when you watch the video there may be compression artifacts (smudges) remaining of genre markers that are on the book, but not clearly visible (more on that later).

She proposed Silas Marner after having done a bit of research on her own (have we mentioned what a star she was?):

Armed with all this information we trawled the website given to us by Esmé for more suitable candidates.

The shape of the author name seriously narrows it down, and where a book might match by name, it fails to match by title. In fact, we only found three real candidates, plus the book Esmé gave us: 

Holy Terrors by Arthur Manchen

Paper Houses by William Plomer

And

Peter Waring by Forrest Reid

Just on first glance, only one of these books really had the shortness of the surname seen in the video,

But just to be sure, since the book in the video is blurred and very under saturated, we tried to replicate it:

These are the settings we used if anyone wants to check our work:

And that blurred and compressed, the “fiction” marker really is more like a smudge, so we feel confident that we don't need to find a book with no genre marks.

Only one of these books has the right surname length. We actually measured with a ruler on screen, and the ratio of length between the Author names on our mystery book is 2.333. The ratio between Forrest and Reid (in the font on the Penguin edition): 2.3. Given the inaccuracies of measuring on a screen that’s remarkably close.

We found it. The book is Peter Waring by Forrest Reid. 

After watching the relevant section of the video through, with this book in mind, we’re now totally convinced this is the right book. (Please let us know if you can find another candidate!)

But why? Why that book? It’s not like they’d ever mentioned it, as far as we could find, at least. 

Here’s where it gets interesting.

Peter Waring (1937) is a full-scale revision of Reid's earlier Following Darkness (1912) in which Peter, a sensitive boy with literary inclinations, grows up unhappily in the household of his father, a cold village schoolmaster in Newcastle, County Down, and among his Belfast relatives whom he finds intolerable. 

'An acute and subtle story of adolescence. . . . A delicacy and a grave beauty which make their own quiet appeal.' Times 

'Reid has written one of the finest studies of the mental, sexual, spiritual life of the adolescent without ever mentioning the words.' Glasgow Herald

Sound like the family background of anyone we know? (hint: replace father with Aunt)

But, oh wait, it gets better. 

Forrest Reid was a gay man (very repressed by many accounts but seemingly just ace, or the equivalent at the time, by others) who wrote novels about the queer adolescent experience, more emotional than sexual, in the early 1900s. 

He was good friends with EM Forster, another queer writer of his time and other suspected but never confirmed queer writers as well such as Arthur Greaves. His works are not really well known still, and frankly weren’t even well known in the 50s and 60s, except in queer circles, according to our research. 

Perhaps the choice of this specific Reid book is related to one or more of the Peters in their circle? Shotton, Best, Brown, and Asher. That's a lot of Peters!

As we said at the start, in the music video the book appears in a scene depicting the song "Paperback Writer". And you know what fits better than “Lear” in the lyrics of that song? 

Dear Sir or Madam, will you read my book? It took me years to write, will you take a look? It's based on a novel by a man named Reid And I need a job So I wanna be a paperback writer Paperback writer

(note: Lear never wrote any novels).

Knowing how they liked plays on words (read, Reid), half rhymes (Reid, be), and internal rhymes (Reid, need) we think it’s very likely the novel in the first draft of the song was by a man named Reid.

Much to think about!

Does the Shire do like a.. well, I guess not an independence Day a la *from Britain*, but like a patriotic holiday? I guess there might be more incentive for one after the war of the ring and all, especially since I know that our little not-leaving trio shuffle things in the Shire politically a bit after the war and I'm sure they'd like to honor everyone's sacrifice/bravery/trauma. Then again, was there like already a Shire Day or something? and they'd make like a veterans and/or memorial day after the story? god, i hope they'd put a little more into either than a deep discount on mattresses. like a town shindig or something!

Great question!

Before the War of the Ring, I doubt the hobbits were "patriotic" as we understand the term. They loved their land, surely, but they expressed that love through the tilling of the earth, and by enjoying its boons. They did not need a special day to honor who they were and where they came from.

If there were holidays that celebrated the "Shire-ness" of the Shire, those were probably Midsummer and the Harvest Festival.

Midsummer took place around the time of the summer solstice, and was a time of bonfires, dancing, singing, maypoles, drinking ales, and of course feasting. The days were long, and the flowers plentiful, so it was also a popular time for weddings. Because of the profusion of flowers, there was also a big flower market at around that time, where awards were given for the finest specimens, and enthusiasts could purchase bulbs and cuttings.

The Harvest Festival was similar to the "county fair" experience in our time. It took place in late September, and by that point, the crops would come in, and the farmers would gather to showcase their finest crops, their finest animals, and their finest wares (from canned goods, to pies, to woodwork), again with prizes being awarded. It was also a time to see family from the far corners of the Shire, hold sports and other competitions, and of course eat. I am sure that there was even a prize for the largest mushroom found in the woods.

After the War of the Ring, things changed, and a new holiday was introduced: Remembrance Day. A natural time for this was November 3rd, the anniversary of the Battle of Bywater. This was a time to honor those fallen in that battle, but also the sacrifice of those who lived through the Scouring. It was a time to tell family stories that centered around those events, as well as the story of the four hobbits who expelled the Ruffians and Sharkey from the Shire.

Remembrance Day was a more solemn occasion. There was feasting as well, but also trips to the cemetery to honor the dead, and pictures, candles, and flowers displayed in homes commemorating both the living and the dead. Food and drink would be left out at special altars throughout the night, or simply at a vacant seat at the table, to remember those who died of hunger and other privations, and those who were starved and ill-used in the Lockholes.

Bonus: When hobbits visit their loved ones at the cemetery, they always bring the favorite food and drink of the deceased to leave at the grave. For this and other reasons, hobbits maintain detailed registers of their loved ones' favorite meals.

July 8th 1930 saw first run of the Bennie Railplane

It was once described as the future of travel.

The streamlined carriages would have zoomed along, dangling from high-level gantries, at up to 120 mph when standard trains hit just 80mph.

In theory, you could have use a railplane to travel from Glasgow to Edinburgh in just 20 minutes. In 1930 a prototype monorail, intended to be rolled out across the city, was installed at Milngavie.

George Bennie, who funded and headed up the project, called it a railplane and the design drew a lot on aeroplane design. There was excitement at the 1930 launch when the first passengers tried it out. The railplane was electrically powered and propeller driven.

Bennie even paid for a Pathe documentary all about his new invention, a clip of which you can view on the link below.

The building of the monorail was a huge operation with parts being put together by William Beardmore & Co Ltd in Dalmuir. It also had a luxurious interior fitted out by Waring and Gillow of London.

However, despite initial excitement, Bennie was unable to get financial backing to develop his idea further.

To me it was well ahead of its time, and came at the wrong time, the world was recovering from the great depression, and in the years that followed war loomed. In 1936 Bennie was ousted from the board of the Railplane company, Inter-Counties Ltd. He was then declared bankrupt in 1937.

Bennie attempted to take forward his monorail idea in other parts of the world and established two new companies. His proposals included lines between city centres and airports, and a monorail line between the River Nile and the Dead Sea which would both transport passengers and provide desert irrigation. However, none of his ideas came to fruition.

Glasgow’s railplane fell into disrepair and sat rusting in Milngavie before being sold for scrap in 1956. The dream had died and within 12 months the bankrupt Bennie, who later ran a herbalist shop, passed away a year later in 1957.

Pottery with collared rims, where the rim has been thickened to look as if a collar runs around it, is uncommon at Late Woodland sites in the La Crosse area. These three grit-tempered sherds from the Sand Lake Archaeological District near Onalaska have thickened rims that do not quite appear to be full collars, so the excavators called them “pseudo collared.” The pseudo collaring suggested that people in the area may have been experimenting with collaring techniques more common among groups in southeastern Wisconsin, north-central Illinois, and to a limited extent elsewhere in southwest Wisconsin.
