So I tossed this in the tags the first time I rebloged this, but I found the quotes I was talking about so I'ma actually reblog it proper this time.
One of my favorite series, Webmage, depicts this wonderfully. Specifically the whole thing about being an Aspect or a Concept.
Putting the quotes under a readme to keep post from getting to large
In the second book, Cybermancy, the main character is going through this problem. But at one point he has a conversation with Eris, and two quotes from her really hit home about this personification.
"What more could Discord ask for in the way of strife then painful truth offered fruitlessly to a friend?" "How can you think that way?" I whispered in horror. I liked Eris. I know I shouldn't, but I did. And I'd thought she liked me. "How can you think that way?" I repeated. "I'm Discord," she said very quietly. "How could I not?" And for just an instant I saw a pain in her face to rival Persephone's. It was gone so quickly I'd never be able to swear I'd really seen it, and yet I knew it would haunt me for a long time to come.
Not much later in the scene the question comes up again, in a rather round about way.
I dropped my hands and glared at Eris. "Can't you ever give it a rest?" "No," she said, and I caught just an echo of her earlier pain, "I can't. Not for one single second."
Just the fact that Eris, as the aspect of Discord and Strife, literally cannot stop 'stirring up shit' is just... perfect
And a very good foreshadowing of the main characters eventual problems with his own ascension into aspect-ness. Because he might not understand it then, but by the end of the book he absolutely does.
more stuff about becoming a god being inherently dehumanizing pls

The struggle is real, but so is the love. You think this is a game!?
Senshi Struggle | Sep. 04, 2014 | The Aile Reve team of Young Queens (cont’d)
In the game of life, the more checkpoints you accumulate, the harder the hurdles become. The harder the hurdles, the bigger the bosses. Sometimes you can’t defeat the boss right away, and you lose a life. Some don’t make it out of the game, and are forced to restart, or resort to quitting entirely. But resourceful, experienced, persistent gamers know that the game has its secrets. Not necessarily cheat codes, because what’s the point of getting the points or special items if you haven’t fully earned it? That’s a question of what you want out of your game, a question for another day…The game is built with secret tunnels, 1UPs around every corner if you look closely enough, and of course, allies. In the game of life, some of us would rather play alone without a back seat player to tell us which is the right and wrong way, but some of us know that we have our allies to turn to in our darkest moments. Whether we only have one life left, whether we’re cornered by a boss and sent back to the beginning, whether we are just completely lost and stuck on a level, know that your team will get you to that checkpoint, and one after the other, you will see it’s no longer about the “GAME OVER”, but the “achievement unlocked”.

Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris (aka the first True Blood book) at age 12/13ish. Mom bought the book for me because she thought I might like it, she also started reading it before giving it to me to see if it was appropriate for my age level. She stopped reading it about two pages before the first sex scene because she thought it was boring and gave it to me. 😂🤷‍♀️
Mom is also responsible for giving me other not quite age appropriate books because she thought I would like them, like: Webmage, The Mercy Thompson series, the Otherworld series (really, really should not have read them at the age I did 😂), and the Anita Blake series (one of mom’s favorites). She might also have tried to get me to read some of her horror books, but I was too much of a chicken 😂
Ok, what book did you read at a young age that you probably shouldn’t have read by your parents’ standards?
I read Delta of Venus by Anais Nin when I was like 16 or 17 without my parents knowing WHAT I was reading.

🌻 Sunny Reading Tag 🌻
Thank you so much for the tag @booktheraepy!
🥞 favourite book:
All time: so hard to pick, but it’s gotta go to Lady Knight by Tamora Pierce
Current: again, really hard to pick, but The Hourglass Throne by KD Edwards absolutely wrecked me and is still sitting in my top spot for the year
🌾 tropes that make you go “asfgrthgj”:
Found family, idiots in love (mutual pining), and I can’t think of any others right now 😅
🌻 comfort book:
WebMage by Kelly McCullough, I’ve read this book so many times that the spine is barely holding the book together anymore.
🌙 death in a book you would take back:
Spoiler alert for Firebreak by Nicole Kornher-Stace, I would take back the death of 22. I was sobbing through the whole end of the book because of what happened.
💡 book you wish you could read again for the first time:
On A Sunbeam by Tillie Walden
Therapy Game by Meguru Hinohara
The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune
And so many more books that I wish I could reread for the first time.
I’m gonna tag: @appleinducedsleep @bookishfreedom @themelodyofspring @sleepyreads @therefugeofbooks @ninja-muse and anyone who would like to do this tag! 😊

I’ve got a couple of books that I’ve reread multiple times, the Protector of the Small series and WebMage (though I haven’t reread this one in a long, long time). The nostalgia that comes flooding back with each read is really nice. But! Now that I’m older I feel like each reread brings something new with it that just wasn’t there before or my younger self just didn’t understand at the time. It’s also kind of nice to see where my love for some of my favorite tropes originated!

[05.06.2024] 2/50 days of booklr
I first read Interview with the Vampire when I was 14. At the time, I got obsessed with the melancholic main character which resonated a lot with my teen angst. Many of the themes interested me at the time, and I also dealt with my own catholic guilt. I read all the books of the series but never stopped loving my sad puppy-eyed Louis. I read one more time when I was alone and isolated at the beginning of the pandemic, and now this year. I have a funny relationship with this book as it's one of my favorites books, but I have to be in a very specific head space for it. I think the topics of being lost, wanting to belong, and looking for answers are easy to relate to, but they always hit too close to home for me. I'm happy that I read it this year and could reflect on some past experiences without being overwhelmed by sad feelings.
Do you guys have a loved book that you read multiple times? And did your reading experience change throughout the reads?

Any Science-Fantasy that you like? It’s a big hit or miss from me but I liked stuff like Homestuck, DBZ, and FF7. Anime/Manga/Japanese Video Games in general tends to be more creative and enjoyable than its western counterpart but I think that’s starting to change like with Homestuck.
You mean like stories that combine both sci-fi and fantasy? I might’ve made a generalization like that about a decade ago, but more and more I’ve found that under scrutiny they tend to fall apart. I’m a fan of Japanese media but it’s not the be all end all of entertaining options.
There’s a lot of science-fantasy I like! I’ll see what I can pull out off the top of my head. Homestuck is one, of course. On the same line of Trendy With The Kids stories, I’m really enjoying Steven Universe—which I say qualifies since it’s like, sci-fi that feels like fantasy, I guess? Like they do fantasy things but with sci-fi explanations for how it works? Although I’m several seasons behind on Steven Universe still lmao. Every day I am hunted and haunted by spoilers.
Another currently Trendy series I liked was the new She-Ra. It’s a good blend of sci-fi and fantasy. I especially appreciate series that don’t treat science and magic like they’re incompatible. That sort of thinking makes sense in the real world, where being pro-science correlates pretty highly with thinking that magic isn’t, like, real; but in a setting where magic is obviously real because people frequently use it to do wild massive reality-changing things, why… why would being pro-science mean not believing in or not trusting magic. That’s like saying being pro-science means not believing in or not trusting music. It doesn’t make sense. Good science is based on empirical evidence and in these settings there is bountiful, easily-collected empirical evidence that magic is, in fact, real, and right there, doing its thing. And I say all this to say: I love Entrapta because she is clearly a scientist, but she doesn’t turn her nose up at magic; she gets her science all over magic, the way a real scientist would do if they lived in a world with magic. And also because Entrapta is a treasure.
The recently-concluded IDW Transformers line actually played around with some science-fantasy elements too. For most of its run it was pure sci-fi, but toward the end it started doing some crossovers with other series that were more fantasy-based—particularly the crossovers with Rom and Visionaries—and it pretty explicitly brought up the question of “to these totally sciency machines, what IS magic, and how does it relate to them and how they interact with reality? (Spoilers: it turns out they’re allergic to magic, but it’s not because they’re science machines, it’s because they accidentally created magic and made it antithetical to them by being assholes several million years ago. It’s A Long Story.) By and large I think the late stage crossovers in IDW Transformers were poorly handled—you really can tell they were written to shoehorn in a bunch of other toy properties that Hasbro wanted to ride on the coattails of the Transformers lines’ success—but, that said, they brought up some interesting ideas, and I genuinely enjoyed the Rom crossover.
Also the WebMage series by Kelly McCullough is among my guilty pleasures. General premise is “the Greek gods work their magic/divine powers via hacking/programming.” The main character isn’t much of a selling point—a general snarky wisecracky hero guy who gets the hot chicks—but like, the sheer quantity of snark is actually kind of impressive, and if you’re not into him then the worldbuilding and cast of mythological characters is entertaining.
I’m sure there’s more but that’s what came off the top of my head.

So this is the survey regarding the magazine I was talking about.
To clarify, this would be, essentially, the LGBT version of J14, Quizfest, etc., in a way, because it would be more focused on LGBT history and current events, kind of still in a pop-culture way. Around the time that I started becoming an LGBT ally, I realized that I wasn’t happy with the fact that these magazines are target specifically to cishet girls. Around the time I realized I wasn’t straight, I became kind of annoyed with the fact that half of the articles and quizzes are about guys that girls should find attractive, or how to tell if your male crush is into you, etc.
Quizfest used to be my favorite magazine, so the fact that I’m finding all these issues with it now made me think about the one thing everyone says: If you don’t like it, change it. And since protesting it would get me nowhere, might as well make something of my own, right?
I guess I’d have to start with a web magazine and a website similar to buzzfeed or something, and work to get enough money to establish a print magazine, but the idea is that I want to find a name for it that would be safe for closeted readers, while also fitting the topic enough that the right people would be able to find it.
All positive responses are appreciated, thank you very much.
