Day 11: Simple Phrases

I have decided to read the lesson aloud so you can hear how the words are said as I do not know IPA and trying to spell the words out phonetically was not working. If you would prefer I used to format of "[Irish], [English], [Irish but slower]" for the words/phrases, just say so.

A short prologue: First of all, I am not a fluent speaker. Although I am not that bad at gaeilge, I am in no way, shape, or form a gaeilgeoir. This is all fairly basic information, but I am not completely immune from making mistakes. 

Second of all: Irish has three main dialects, Ulster, Munster, and Connacht. I was taught through the school system by people from all over the country, and my dialect is somewhat like patchwork. If you, or anyone else, pronounce words slightly differently than I do, it's probably because we’re speaking different dialects, and that's fine. 

Third of all: while Irish uses the latin alphabet, it is unfair to assume it obeys by the same phonics as English. The most glaring examples of this are fadá, or these things áéíóú. Fadá [lit. long] lengthen vowel sounds turning ah (a) to aw (á) and so on so forth. Also, if a consonant is followed by a h, then one exhales a little harder when saying the consonant, therefore softening it. The most obvious appearance of this is “bh” which makes a “v” sound. Or a “w” sound because most consonants make two different sounds depending on the vowels around it, which we shall not get into today. 

The first thing you need to know in any language is how to say hello. In Irish, the most common greeting is “Dia duit”, which is literally “God be with you”. However, if someone greets you with dia duit, the way you respond is “Dia is Muire duit” [lit. God and Mary be with you], and as the third person greeting you reply with “Dia is Muire is Padraig duit” or you can replace Padraig with any saint of your choosing. However if you are talking to a group larger than that you can use “Dia diaobh”. 

Some more informal greetings include “Haigh” which means hi, or “Aon sceal?” which means “any stories” and is basically what's up. You can also skip straight to asking how someone is.

“Conas atá tú?” is “how are you”, to which you can answer “Táim go maith,” or “Táim ceart go leor” which are “I’m well” and "I'm alright” respectively. You can reflect any question asked of you with a good “And you?” which is “Agus tusa?”

If you are asked your name with “Cad is ainm duit?” you can respond with “____ is ainm dom” for “my name is____”. If you are taking the initiative to introduce yourself without being asked, you can also use “Is mise ____” which is “I am ____”. 

The basis of saying goodbye is the word “Slán”, which is derived from sláinte (health), so it is wishing someone good health. However, most people either say “Slán leat” or “slán go fóil” which are “heath be with you,” and “goodbye for now”. Which variation you use is completely up to you. 

You probably already know that Éire is Ireland and gaeilge is the Irish language. So a Gaeilgeoir is someone who is fluent in Irish, a gaeltach is an area where people speak Irish in day to day life, and a gaelscoil is a school where everything is taught through Irish. It is also handy to know the word for English: bearla. So “As gaeilge” and “As bearla” are “in Irish'' and “in English” respectively. 

You will always need a few bits and bobs words when you’re starting out. “Agus” is “and”, “nó” is “or”, and “ach” is “but”. You can do a lot in this world with three good conjunctions. Please is “le do thoil”, and thank you is “go raibh maith agat”. You will see “Fáilte” in a lot of tourist destinations, as it means "welcome”. And “Slainte!” is “cheers,” which we saw above also means health. 

Finally, while you may be happy to tell people “Tá cupla focal agam” meaning “I have a few words (of Irish)”, there is no shame in saying “Ní thuigim” or “I don’t understand”, or asking them to repeat “as bearla, le do thoil”. Learning new skills is admirable and most people understand that. 

I want to also do a seanfhocail a day, for fancy points. Seanfhocail are idiomatic phrases, and literally means “old words”. Today’s seanfhocail is the classic: “Níl aon tinteán mar do thinteán féin” which is “There’s not hearth like your own hearth” or “There's no place like home.”

Keeping it a secret for so long has been torturous, but now that the game reveals are happening I can finally say that for the past few years I’ve been part of the player council for the upcoming DRAGON AGE: THE VEILGUARD!

At this time all I can tell you is that my role was to provide feedback to the development team to help improve the game, something which has been very special to be able to do. Now that things are in motion, I’m excited to see what gets revealed with each official announcement…

I'm thinking about how I've always been told, "Reptiles are incapable of love. They only use you for your body heat." But then I see my girls do this with each other- and they're both cold blooded.

When I let them play together, they are almost always together either cuddling or following each other around. Sakura does most of the following and seeks out here sibling if she's scared, but has also been very brave when she thought her sister needed protecting. If this is not love, what is it? And yes, Scoria is very loving with me too- but I find it hard to believe she only wants my body heat when she cuddles her sibling who doesn't have any.

If not love, it at the very least is more than seeking out body heat since that variable is removed between her sister and myself and she seeks both of us for cuddles and comfort. Her little sister will race to her sister and hide under her when she's scared, and Scoria has gone out of her way to comfort her sister at no other benefit to herself. I'm hoping to get similar actions on video as they regularly do these things with each other but it's hard to predict to have my camera filming.

I think sometimes Sakura likes together time a little more than Scoria, hahaha.

So last time I was saying how their relationship got from bad to good to love to obsession, then after double life ended it all went down to 0. Or atleast how they though it did. The feelings stayed, tho much less intence and toxic, so they joked, denied, flirted and denied and longed for eachother and denied it again.

UNTIL! They met again on season 10 of Hermitcraft. Then they once again joked around about being obsessed, but this time they both saw sparcles in eachother eyes, gentle almost accidental touches and just both decided "How far I can push this, how long we will play this game of chicken until one of us backs out"

I like your comic, but I don't understand the symbolism of the mourning frame next to Shane, could you explain it to me?

Steph deciding after Startcourt life is way too short to continue living it for anyone else and immediately starts transitioning, everyone who matters in her life is of course accepting. and the rest of Hawkins is too wrapped up in the drama of the mall to notice that Steph and Steve are the same person, its just assumed Steve got out of dodge after the mall burned down.

the party starts going to hellfire and Stephs babysitter mode activates because these people don't know what monsters and references could set her kids off so she decides to tell Eddie what he is not allowed to use in his campaign or even mention around them. She goes in boymode because no one knows Steph but Steve still has a reputation.

Eddie is very very confused when Steve Harrington approaches him and immediately gets into what he is not under any circumstances to mention in front of the newest members of hellfire and its got to be the weirdest prank or something because the kids have never mentioned knowing Steve at all and all and the only connection Eddie knows about it that Steve is Nancy's ex which would not explain this behavior at all. so of course he has to test it, to disastrous results they do a good job at putting on a brave face but its clear they're terrified and as soon as the session is called they pull out a walkie and start calling for check ins. a voice that must be the mysterious badass and beautiful babysitter Steph that they're constantly going on about tells them to stay put and that she'll come in and get them. they protest that they aren't kids anymore but she isn't hearing it.

Eddies excited to get to see her for himself to see if she really is all they've built her up to be or is this is just a childhood crush clouding their judgment. he decided they haven't been doing her enough justice as she swings the door open and is doing head counts and visual wellness checks backlit from the fluorescents in the hall way like some kind of angel. once shes assured of the partys safety she rounds on him hands on hips looking so bitchy and disappointed "you used something off the list didn't you" it isn't a question. the party catches her attention before he can untie his tongue ruffling hair and giving half hugs, he'll have to thank them latter because the wave goodbye Henderson gives him is definitely conspiratorial like he was taking her attention on purpose.

It takes a day after the weirdness that was the last hellfire meeting for curiosity to get the best of him and he goes to get answers, he has no idea where Steph lives but he's sold at enough Harrington house parties to find his way. Imagine his surprise when its Steph that opens the door and starts talking to him like they've actually conversed before. Like she was the one that gave him the list of things not to mention, while simultaneously dressing him down for not listening.

for at least a brief moment Eddie assumes Steph is dating herself, it would explain how she knows about his conversation with Steve why Steve felt it was his place to tell him about the monsters, maybe she had been busy and he'd offered to go in her stead, and why she was answering his door.

She explains that she can't actually explain all that much about why he cant use demogorgons and mindflayers in his campaigns, because NDAs are a bitch. but does give him what she can leaving him even more curious because what the hell did a bunch of 14 year olds get into in Hawkins that require NDAs

before he leaves though he has to ask how she knows steve because that shouldn't be some huge secret.

Steph looks like a deer in headlights for a moment before doubling over with laughter, snorting hard to breathe crying laughter ( it really shouldn't be as cute as it was) once shes composed herself enough she just states "I am steve"
