Wild Cards V: Down and Dirty
Editor: George R. R. Martin
Authors: John J. Miller, Roger Zelazny, Leanne C. Harper, Arthur Byron Cover, Melinda M. Snodgrass, Edward Bryant, Stephen Leigh, Pat Cadigan, and Walter Jon Williams
Cover: Michael Komarck
As a gang war breaks out across the Jokertown ghetto, a new mutated version of the wild card virus strikes New York causing more deaths and transformations. Now the local Aces and Jokers find themselves fighting on two fronts just to stay alive. After the globe-trotting escapades of the previous volume, Martin and friends return us to New York and some fan favorite characters. It's great to see the Sleeper, Turtle, Bagabond, and others take the stage again. Like that earlier installment, this is a series of inter-related short stories, this time detailing the events around the gang war. We actually pick up with some characters during the events of the last book before everything moves forward in the timeline. Continuity is becoming a big part of this series now and each story builds on the previous like a literary house of cards. There are a number of stories that are serialized throughout this book, meaning they're kind of broken up in chapters between other stories. We've seen a little of that previously in the series, but this time Martin intertwines three different stories throughout the book. Disappointingly, the gang war story is really more of a background to this overall mosaic. Only a few stories really spotlight that storyline. The good news is the wild card virus outbreak and the escalating political intrigue more than make up for any lack in the gang war story. I found myself more interested in those plotlines as the book went on. There are also some very personal journeys for the Turtle and Dr. Tachyon in this book that really had me looking for the next chapter relating their stories. Most of the stories were very engaging and kept me actively turning pages. I felt Edward Bryant's "The Second Coming of Buddy Holley" was a bit of a weak point for me. Not only did the story not really fit into any of the storylines, but Cordelia Chaisson doesn't seem to make for a great protagonist. This is two books in a row where I hit a bump on stories focusing on her. I didn't think I was going to enjoy "Jesus was an Ace" by Arthur Byron Cover, but it really did give me a great insight into Reverend Leo Barnett. I'm sure there are bigger things in store for that character in future books. Overall, this was a better and more interesting read than the last one. While there was a bit of jumping around between stories, it still kept me interested and wanting to read more. My head was spinning at possibilities and I can't wait to see what the gang has in store for the future!

WHY WASN'T, AND STILL HASN'T BEEN, BILL BRYANT ARRESTED AND CHARGED?
He was 100% complicit in the imprisonment and attack on me, as well as the years of abuse that preceded. Both Bill Bryant and Jeanette Hazen Bryant have committed violent acts against me (and others!) but have managed to work the system to get themselves out of more trouble, leaning heavily into the privilege and bias they're given, and trying to use the justice system to force me into silence.
Jeanette was arrested, charged with a felony and jailed; but was released on "pretrail release" instead of normal bail, and now she's retained a criminal defense lawyer- these people are now literally using my own money to defend themselves for abusing and hurting me. Seriously?!?
William "Bill" Byron Bryant slipped out of being finally caught and made a felon on a technicality: he wasn't physically present when the police showed up. But he should and MUST be charged in kind. They worked together on this like they do with everything. I have 2 doors to my rooms, they each slept in front of one to hold me in hostage.
But Bill and Jeanette have buddied up to certain officers and judges, holding a suspicious amount of sway in some instances. Then again they'd always told us, specifically, that they will "get away with everything" because of their ties and status in the community, and even sheerly on first appearances- they own a house, business, drive a Tesla, are old white republicans... they drove us hard into poverty... so who looks better, who do police and judges automatically favor? And yeah, they planned it that way.
Clearly none of this is right, none of this is just. I'm fighting with the truth on my side, hoping for justice. But I still need a lot of help. And I'm honestly worried that the whole system has been corrupted and misused so badly that there is no justice...

Escrita por Gonzalez y dirigida por Alfonso Gómez-Rejón (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, American Horror Story).
Producen Beaty, Whitehead y Laurence Fishburne (Black-ish).

Damencio’s Best of 2020

Note
i saw your poetry post and i was just wondering, what poets (new and old if that matters) do you like?
william blake is a HUGE favorite, so is percy bysse shelley. robert frost, robert burns, william cullen bryant, lord byron, longfellow, sir walter scott, samuel rogers, and greenleaf whittier
but the poetry era, i really really like the late 18th going into the 19th century. it’s very romantic, descriptive, and is my definition of excellent poetry. i don’t mind modern poetry if it’s more than what milk and honey tries to be: effective emotionally

Cincinnati’s Unsung (But Prolific!) Poet, Horace Williamson
Apparently poets, if they are male, should be soft and soulful and wear their hair long. At least that is the way the Cincinnati Post on two occasions, a decade apart, described poets, if only to emphasize that Horace Williamson was not like that, at all, even though he was most definitely a poet.
Horace G. Williamson was perhaps the most prolific poet in Cincinnati history. You won’t find him in English class these days, nor in any anthologies. Horace Williamson, you see, wrote for money, not for art. According to the Post [15 October 1910]:
“Horace Williamson, social secretary of the Y.M.C.A., and rough and ready high-speed poet, writes to order and not by inspiration and gets his stuff printed quicker than any of the boys who consult the Muse before they begin work. He also gets paid better.”
Williamson found his models in the Belgian poet Maurice Maeterlink who was a boxer; in Edgar Allen Poe, an athlete during his days at West Point; in the strenuous daily exercise regimen of William Cullen Bryant and in Lord Byron’s swim across the Hellespont to prove that poets were not sissies.
Tumblr media
Williamson, it seems, built a profitable sideline writing poems for greeting card companies, sometimes ghost-writing love letters on spec. He had a lot of sidelines, it seems. While holding down the YMCA post, Williamson ran a talent agency and also performed as Cincinnatus in quite a few civic celebrations over the years. The Post was fascinated by the poetry, however, and showed up every few years to demonstrate that poets could be regular guys. Williamson told the Post:
“I sell poetry like a huckster sells eggs. The postcard printers mail me an order like this: ‘Send us ten Halloween poems’ or ‘Give us $50 worth of some Christmas stuff.’ Then I sit myself down in an ordinary wooden chair at an ordinary typewriter and grind ‘em out just like that.”
Williamson demonstrated his proficiency by dashing off the following quatrain, for which he was paid $5 – or about $140 in today’s dollars:
“With golden thread I weave your name Into a dream where all is bliss And lighting the way with love’s bright flame I set it a-wing on the dreams of a kiss”
Totally without qualms about diminishing his art, Williamson instead proclaimed that he was really helping poetry reach a broader audience in the modern age:
“The poetry about trees and the other beauties of nature is all right, but not with the large mass of the people. They demand something more virile and snappy. I am not so sure that it is a bad change, for the poetry that is now being written is read by many more people and thus serves its purpose better as an entertainer and teacher.”
Although his poetry sold well and he published several volumes of verse, Williamson seemed constantly on the quest for a better day job. He left the YMCA and joined the Baldwin Piano Company as director of advertising. In this role, he made one high-profile sale that gained him national publicity – he sold a Baldwin piano to President Warren G. Harding and his wife Florence King Harding, who had it installed at the White House. It appears that Williamson had met Mrs. Harding when he was a schoolboy. After reciting a humorous poem about an Irishman at a school function, the future First Lady invited him to her house to perform the verse for her friends.
Before and after Baldwin, Williamson served as District Examiner for Automobile Drivers. In that role, every prospective driver in the Cincinnati region had to satisfy Horace Williamson as to their abilities with an automobile. He told the Post [4 January 1917] what he believed contributed to traffic safety:
“No persons should be allowed to drive without first being examined by a doctor and questioned as to his knowledge of driving by an expert. Fines don’t hurt a careless automobile driver. Denial of the right to drive will hurt him. The worst of all dangers is the driver with a few highballs in him. The last but not least is the child who is permitted by his parents to drive the family car. No man should be permitted to smoke while driving a machine.”
Ironically, Horace Williamson died in an automobile accident in 1943. He was 62 years old when he lost control of his car and it skidded into a loading dock on East Fourth Street. He was dead before the ambulance arrived and, in a final indignity, it appears a passerby stole cash and a watch from his lifeless body.
The obituaries described his poetry as a hobby or avocation, but noted that he had performed an entertainment featuring humorous verse on the morning before his fatal accident. The Williamson Entertainment Bureau provided his major source of income throughout his life, but he confessed to passing on the Mills Brothers when they auditioned for him. The managerial fees for that act would have put him on easy street.
Horace Williamson left behind a widow, a daughter, two sons, seven grandchildren, and a pile of soppy postcards purchased by young swains hoping to get lucky with the girls of their dreams.

Tumblr media
Chris Paul

Stern

Besides myself, at least eight (8) other women now carry the #metoo brand because of Bill Bryant. He managed to silence to others, and I don't know exactly how or why they're still staying silent- I approached them once I was able to finally speak out on all the horrible abuse I've been subject to by Bill and his wife, Jeanette Hazen Bryant; and asked if they'd come forward with me now. They wanted to, but won't, because, and I quote: "frankly I feel like [Bill and Jeanette are] evil and [I'm/we're] fearful that [they are] very revengeful and I don't want [them] to hurt my family. "
William Byron Bryant and Jeanette Elise Hazen Bryant, who run Bryant & Associates Insurance on Officer's Row in Vancouver, Washington, are sadistic predators who have hurt and destroyed countless lives over the decades that they've leveraged themselves into privileged positions in the community. Bill leans heavily on his status as a Navy vet to get away with innumerable disgusting atrocities. They both use their demographic status as an older, white, Republican, property-and-business-owning couple to befriend corrupt people in positions of authority (police officers, sheriff, lawmakers, lawyers, even judges on the county superior court) and receive special treatment- especially, as I've now been both witness and victim to, when they do get caught committing their vile crimes- they quickly are able to have their crimes dismissed and have witnesses like me aggressively silenced. They somehow even were able to, after quite the display of terrible acting in the courtroom complete with fake tears and carefully teased hair to create the appearance of stress and "fear" (I was a professional makeup artist and stylist, trained in SFX- sorry, Jeanette, but I can spot a fake a mile away, and I know all the tricks for creating fake tears which I've seen you use many times over the years); but after this performance, where Clark County Superior Court Judge Carin Schienberg- who had had a suspicious meeting in her chambers beforehand, and who had firmly told every single other person on her docket that day that she would not allow any additions or changes to be made to the orders they were asking her to grant- Judge Schienberg asked the Bryants- and ONLY the Bryants- if they'd like to add anything to their order. Then, when the time came for my husband and his attorney to speak- an absolute and unquestionable right which he has, to speak in his defense and present to the court all the evidence we have that very clearly proves the Bryants as liars who were trying to use a restraining order to get around the eviction moratorium, the evidence we have where we can, line by line, prove without doubt that everything they wrote is perjury, incorrect and falsified, contradicts itself, includes partial quotes AND includes references and quotes from police officers where there exist official police reports contradicting the story that the Bryants so boldly wrote on an official legal document- when the time came for our turn to speak on the matter, Judge Schienberg REFUSED to even let one word be said.
This is an absolute violation of constitutional rights and a miscarriage of justice.
I can only wonder, if this happens so brazenly and so casually here in this suburban city where most people feel is safe, run smoothly and justly (until they come face to face with it like this)- how much worse... just how incredibly prevalent must stuff like this be throughout the country? And how much worse is it and has it always been for people of color and other severely discriminated groups? And what recourse is there? A judge has final say. They can decide whatever they please and that's it. If they're having a bad day and just don't want to deal with doing the due diligence of their job, they can just decide at will cases which can lead to people being violently hurt (see the case of Tiffany Hill) and nobody can stop them. There is really no authority over them to check that injustices aren't carried out daily. It's not right. It needs to change.
Bill Bryant has tried to force himself into my bedroom, tried to peek on me changing. Bill Bryant worked hand in hand with Jeanette Hazen Bryant in building the barricade in front of both my doors- imprisoning me inside and then torturing me all night while stealing the rest of my personal property that was out in the house still being packed to move- and Bill Bryant himself slept in front of my bedroom door to keep me in and to monitor me. He's done that for years and kept doing it even after Jeanette was arrested. He patrols the hallway outside my room, pacing back and forth, occasionally leaning against my door to listen to me. We've found holes drilled through the walls where they both likely visually observed me as well as listened to everything we ever did, all our most private moments. We lived in fear and under duress for all those years and now the Bryants have set themselves up to get away with it all.
Bill Bryant was 100% complicit in everything that Jeanette did the night after which she was caught, arrested, and charged with a class c felony. Bill had managed to get away before the police arrived, so was not arrested on the simple technically that they didn't catch him red handed. I am calling for his immediate arrest and to be charged the same as Jeanette. He was allowed to not only go free to cause damage all over town but the police he is friends with allowed him to move himself back into the house that I was still a tenant in. Clark County Sheriff's Office and Vancouver Police Department allowed this disgusting criminal, known abuser of me, into the house where I was now stuck alone, disabled and laid up, since they'd managed to force my husband out. And he continued to hurt me. I called 911. The operator hung up on me.
I am at a loss to not only defend myself, which, frankly, is too late for- the damage has been done- but to protect and warn others who they will go after. It is the Bryants' M.O. to find victims they can use and abuse this way, destroy lives, toss them away and bury it. Please help me stop this. If I can just prevent ONE other person from getting hurt by these people...
PLEASE CALL FOR THE ARREST AND CHARGE OF WILLIAM BYRON BRYANT IN VANCOUVER, WASHINGTON, FOR, IN AT LEAST, THE SAME CRIMINAL CHARGES HIS WIFE WAS GIVEN. HE DID EVERYTHING SHE DID. HE BARRICADED ME IN AND SLEPT OUTSIDE MY DOOR, AND EVEN AFTER SHE WAS TAKEN AWAY, HE CAME BACK AND HARASSED ME MORE.
Please SIGNAL BOOST and help stop these dangerous predators from hurting others!
