Also speedran a Bigshadow artfight reference. I think she’s probably my favorite of my alternate DoD, but maybe because I just haven’t worked on the others as much.

-I struggled to come up with wing/underbelling patterns. I used to go with spiral-y patterns like her father but I don’t know if that really suits her. I ended up doing some word association and was like “what makes big shadows in the sky? Clouds”, so its supposed to look like their are clouds blocking out some of her stars.

-I’ve HC’d for a while that Moonwatcher (and by extension Bigshadow in this AU) have a slight hint of Icewing ancestry in them through Secretkeeper. Not that much, but maybe just a little to explain their pale coloration and longer horns and spines. 

-To extend off the Sandwing idea, the Nightwing “breath weapon” is more of a superheated flash bang that goes off in their mouth used to blind foes, even from a decent distance. Their mouth stays really hot after and gives their bite a bit of extra spice, but they can’t really use it as the “damage weapon” on its own. They have really thick eyelids they close when they use it to not blind themselves.

LORE DUMP‼️‼️ Buckle up losers, I’ve got a new WoF AU and OCs to boot. Welcome to my shitty dragon crime drama.

It currently doesn’t have a title or anything, it just exists. Here’s the deets:

1. This story takes place several decades after Arc 3. A lot of canon characters still exist, meaning I’ll be referencing them and what they’ve become. Eventually I might develop this into a whole future AU, and write all the alliances and everything, but for now I’ll just mention some key players.

2. These characters live in a city called Unity. In A Guide to the Dragon World, Anemone mentioned wanting to build an intertribal city for MudWings, SeaWings and RainWings. Well, guess what! She did, and that’s Unity. Unfortunately, it’s hard to make dragons to get along, especially when generational wounds linger from the War of SandWing Succession. To make matters more complicated, many Pantalan dragons have settled in Unity, bringing with them unfamiliar ideas and abilities.

3. To outsiders, Unity is a gleaming beacon of hope for intertribal cooperation. Most visitors don’t stay long enough to witness anything more. Residents live in an entirely different world. Unity is ruled by multiple factions, known colloquially as Hordes. Hordes control anything and everything they can get their claws on. Some Hordes, inspired by the Outclaws of the Scorpion Den, try to maintain justice within Unity. Most exist to amass wealth and power.

4. Hordes may be intertribal or tribe-specific. Even those exclusive to one tribe may call upon agents from another for their unique abilities. Alliances are constantly shifting, and if you gain a reputation with the Hordes, it’s best that you make yourself forgettable—or risk getting swept up in their plans.

AND NOW FOR OUR CAST:

Iridescence is a sly RainWing-SilkWing hybrid living in the city of Unity. Her striking colors make her stand out in any crowd, but more striking is her reputation. She is notoriously clever, conniving, and coy, using her delicate appearance to lull others into a false sense of security. She primarily trades Pantalan imports, but under cover of night, she deals in more…sinister goods. Poisons are her specialty. With the help of Kudzu, her leafspeaking assistant, she cultivates dozens of toxic plants to use in her concoctions.

Kudzu is a reserved, cynical LeafWing. He hails from a small group of LeafWings who, resenting Queen Sequoia’s push for peace, left Pantala in pursuit of isolation. To avoid his parents’ preaching about Pantalan politics, he spent most of time studying the flora and fauna of Pyrrhia. He would later move to Unity, where he studied under a SeaWing doctor and eventually opened his own practice. Soon after, he began working with Iridescence, helping her make poisons in exchange for funding his studies. His true passion is medicine.

Salamander is a timid, quiet MudWing. MudWing troops are a common sight in Unity, but nobody knows which she hails from. Salamander prefers to keep it that way. Her Bigwings, Caiman, is one of Unity’s deadliest Horde bosses. Salamander is rarely involved with her sibs’ crimes—they consider her much too anxious to bring along—except when they need her fireproof scales. As of late, Salamander has been spending more time in Caiman’s neighborhood, raising suspicions about her loyalties. Fortunately, she has an alibi. Rumor has it that Caiman has developed smokesickness, a rare and potentially fatal disease. As one of Unity’s mail carriers, it’s simply Salamander’s job to deliver her medicine.

Here’s my beloved child, the Frankensteined SeaWing/SilkWing Stood base. I put it together about… 2 years ago now? This was originally supposed to be a fun little editing project and ended up being like. 4 months of on-and-off work on it because. Stood bases are detaaailed.

I- Why do I not have the transparent version saved to my phone? I digress.

A good amount of it I ended up drawing myself to fill in the gaps/make it a smoother transition. I drew so many scales. I don’t know how stood did it, I was going to go insane. (Especially the arms. I basically redrew the whole arms.) Also, if you’re not familiar with the Stood bases, it’s these:

Very beautiful, very powerful. I love these bases, some of my favorite WOF FTUs.

I also have an Ice/Hive Frankenstein I made, as well as some slight pose change edits on seawing, icewing, and skywing, I think. Let me know if you guys want to see those. I’m fairly proud of those as well.

I colored in another Carnivorous Ruse base, mainly posting this because editing out the webbed talons was a pain. I wanted him to look more hybrid, but dang that was hard to edit. It looks really good though

So I have Thoughts about canon Seawing design. Making a comparison with Biohazardia's wonderful base (because it keeps to canon while giving these dragons BEAUTIFUL anatomy)!

The top is the OG Biohazardia Seawing base with canon scales and markings. The bottom is my edit, with custom unique markings.

I've always thought the neck scales on Seawings were cool, but was always confused as to why they're not repeated anywhere else. They're big, have a unique shape and look fantastic... but so out of place. Why not repeat them all along the body, or at least down the tail? Does it have a reason, like lion's manes? Is that stated anywhere? I just don't understand LOL

And then the markings is more of a personal preference than design nitpick - I think unique characters should have unique markings, but I understand how that may have been lost in translation between writing and art. Glowing markings can have so many different shapes and appearances, and I love to play with those!

So in my edit, I did away with all premade markings, and altered the shoulders, thighs, flanks and tail to have a more cohesive scale/plate pattern. And, of course, the ability to do whatever needs be done with marking patterns. What do you think? Too far from canon? Let me know!

Figured I might as well get yall’s input for what you want to see from me once I can do digital art again

Keep in mind that I’ve already finished a few of the dragons for each set and as such some groups will take longer to finish than others if they are chosen first, I will eventually get round to doing all the groups I just wanna know what you guys would want to see first.

Also I have no idea when I’ll get my laptop back so I have no idea when I’ll be able to get started on the winning group so also be aware of that

Was originally going to shade this but I added the eye sparkle and just did not want to continue.

Anyways I’m resurrecting the “alternate DoD au” for the umpteenth time. Also just kind of wanted to make an artfight reference for Arroyo as I like their design the most.

Anyways some notes about my sandwing design

-The little “cobra hoods” as well as sails and wing doo-dads are used for letting off heat and keeping cool. Not every single sandwing has them, but it’s not a rare trait.

-The square scales along their back and legs are thick and rubbery; meant to protect from potential stings. I also HC that sandwings are partially immune to their own venom. Fatality is rare, but bad stings can still make them pretty sick.

-I’m still jungling the HC that the Sandwings breathe lightning/a mix of fire and lightning instead of just fire. It’s just kind of strange that (so far) their is no tribe in WOF that breathes lightning/has lightning powers (I feel like WOF follows follows some of the bigger fantasy world building tropes, so it’s just kind of odd not to see that one). Also allusion to D&D blue dragon or whatever.

Like they all talk about how evil and terrifying it was and how it was some great monster, but they all go in different directions when it comes to how it was defeated. Like nobody could even figure out how to beat something like that.

Hi, I love you’re redesigns so much, and I am wondering if my favorite character (Waspy) is on the character waitlist or if you have already redesigned her?

I actually tried to do her a few times before, but it was kind of a struggle since I want her to be super devious but never knew how - until today. @kingfisher298 and @nickyblurrymind33 also wanted to see, so I am proud to finally announce my redesign of Queen Wasp! I apologize in advance.

Edit: (putting this up here so nobody misses it, but I was informed this morning that the person who’s request I replied to is actually an extremely problematic individual. I didn’t know this at the time and would’ve blocked/used someone else’s request if I did, and I deeply apologize for this mistake.)

Getting the obvious out of the way, yes, she is creepy. Very creepy. When making this redesign, illustrating Queen Wasp in the scariest way possible was the main thing on my mind. I wanted to create a design which would accurately reflect (and justify) every thought Blue has ever had in regards to Wasp, as well as truly vilifying her even down to the first impression. She is described as incredibly tall and lanky: and as much as I tried to make this visible through her build, I did end up shortening her neck + making her head bigger to give her a more passively intimidating vibe. I think it would be way creepier if she was so large that she could still tower over other dragons even with the posture I drew her with. I imagine the bottom of her mouth is about how tall an average dragon is.

I took a lot of inspiration from the ichneumonid wasp, a parasitic insect which A) looks disturbing, and B) lays its eggs in caterpillars. Not only is that horrifying in itself - I also thought it fit Wasp very well, given that she injects hivewing eggs with the breath of evil to gain control over them. Her ribcage and bones are well-defined through her patterns, since I had her plant-only diet in mind when creating this and imagined she would be rather malnourished. Outside of the oodles of spikes I added to her limbs and spine, I also decided on giving her three stingers instead of one - because one isn't enough for someone as evil as her. (I also thought that the single stinger looked really stupid while I drew this.) You may have noticed the breath of evil along her stinger! Whilst I did originally plan on making this a consistent feature in her design, I waited until the end to add it and by that time it just clashed really hard with the other details in place.

I'm a fan of how Queen Wasp was presented as a villain, and I really wish she stayed the main antagonist through the entirety of arc 3. I was really hoping to get more story on social justice for silkwings + a chrysalis-focused rebellion type thing, but I'm not entirely unhappy with the ending since at least we got to meet Freedom. Either way, this redesign is definitely one of the more abstract, but I'm personally pretty happy with how it turned out!

Here's some new info shared today by Tui at the Enoch Pratt Library event!

Tui said that there's a Wings of Fire "Bible" her editor made to help keep track of the history and world in WoF

Tui says there will be a prophecy for Arc 4 but it hasn't been written yet

Tui says that when she received art for the Darkstalker Graphic Novel, she started "getting traumatized by what she wrote" so she says the art will be getting dialed down a tiny bit

Tui mentioned the Wings of Fire Wiki and says she uses it a lot, saying she had to use it to study for a WoF trivia competition

Tui says she hasn't figured out POVs for Books 17-20 yet and says she needs to figure out a love interest for the POV of Book 16

Tui says she will read a bit of Book 16 at the upcoming FanWing Fest

Book 16 will be released in 2026 and says it'll be releasing shortly after the Talons of Power Graphic Novel

This may have already been shared by Tui in the past, but Tui says that the Dragonets of Destiny's cave was based off a glowworm cave in New Zealand

Despite previous claims by Tui, Tui now says there likely won't be new covers for upcoming special editions of books 2-5

There will be a MudWing main character in Arc 4

Progress on the Wings of Fire TV Show has been delayed due to the fires in LA. Tui says she'll be auctioning off books to help with charity
