Post-canon-ish (post Jun Pyo/Jan Di's wedding), I originally wrote this for a randomly rolled prompt word (image) in . . . April 2015. And then rewrote it (including cutting a second scene that was 1.8k) in September 2023.

I may have half forgotten about it in Whumptober 2023, and then just went well there's no specific timeframe and let it slide sitting around. >.> Oops.

This one was a nice gem to find this year. I love fics focused on the F4 friendship and the Woobin and Jihoo one has been on my mind lately (mostly because I keep writing them interacting in my own fic), so I was very happy when I saw someone post a fic focused on them. It's great and a nice character exploration of them (and even Jihoo's grandfather)!

I've recommended this one before and I'll recommend it again because I can. I don't know why I keep reading AUs where things start out wrong for this ship, I think I just like suffering 😂. My favorite thing in this fic is how the writer got in Jandi's head and her job.

Daomings Play for Keeps by Anna_Dromeda

Set during episode eight, Shancai never goes down to the beach and kisses Lei, but instead wakes up Ah Si in her usual violent manner and tells him to get his lazy butt down to the beach to comfort his friend during his time of crisis. This goes about as well as you would expect. Shancai, realizing she has feelings for both boys, gets it into her head that she is just a game to Daoming Si, and vows to play to win. Her proposal? A one-month trial period of no fighting or possessive idiocy. His solution? A relationship agreement. What could possibly go wrong here?

This fic is so funny i can't even begin to describe it. Love the interactions between the F4 and how over the top everything is (very in character). Seriously recommend.

Gu Jun Pyo is represented by red roses which usually symbolize passion, desire and romance but can also relay beauty and prosperity.

Yoon Ji Hoo represents peonies which symbolize bashfulness, wealth, honour, fortune and compassion.

So Yi Jeong is represented by orchids, people have associated the plant with virility, fertility, sex, determination and other aspects of reproduction.

Song Woo Bin is holding yellow tulips which symbolize joyous bonds shared between dear friends and family.

Growing up is realizing the 2nd leads were both too good for the main ones and deserve each other instead:

Hot take and I know it's a rare pair, but Ji Hoo x Jae Kyung would have been amazing. I don't really ship them in other adaptations (I'm a Lita x MJ shipper in the Thai version even if I could only respect Jae Kyung x Woo Bin lol). However, Ji Hoo and Jae Kyung have something special I don't know how to describe. Perhaps it's because they're the most fleshed out versions among all adaptations, and their last scene together just shows how much they understand one another, and how Jae Kyung supports Ji Hoo's happiness. Anyway, I'm only saying this because I just remember this amazing and heartfelt fic and want to ramble why I ship this J x J the most in this version lol (it was never pair the spares for me). This fic also made me realize the "Once in a lifetime" parallel to Ji Hoo, and his and Jae Kyung's development is sooo amazing and touching y'all.

BOYS OVER FLOWERS (2009, KOREA ADAPTATION)

Ji Hoo has stepped aside. And with the help of F4, Gu Jun-Pyo (LEE MIN-HO) fakes a hospitalization bringing a mournful Guem Jan Di to his side. Until she realizes it's all in jest.

Gu Jun-Pyo begins spending time with Jan Di and her parents and her little brother. Soaking in the way a poor family lives, survives and such. He loving ever minute of it that when his fellow F4 members So Yi Jung (KIM BUM) and Song Woo Bin (KIM JOON) inquire, a smiling Jun-Pyo can only "pity" there misunderstanding of life. So cute.

Yet Jun-Pyo and Jan Di next problem is around the corner as they join Jan Di's friend Chu Ga Eul on a double date with a guy that is scum and invokes Jun-Pyo's ire. And his unwillingness to explain or apologize leads....

Boys Over Flowers - 6/10

Last weekend I was bored and searching for something to watch on Netflix and Netflix was like "HEY THIS SHOW IS LEAVING NETFLIX ON MAY 1ST" and since Boys Over Flowers is a classic K-drama, I figured I should watch it before I'd have to put in more effort to find it. And to be honest, in spite of the lukewarm score I gave it, I don't regret it. Sure it's not like an objectively great show (though def watchable!) but it became a phenomenon for a reason. It's a story that has a lot of fun tropes. A poor girl gets a scholarship to a ritzy school where she comes into conflict with the F4, a group of powerful and rich seniors consisting of Jun-pyo (the bully and ringleader of the group - heir to a conglomerate), Ji-hoo (musical genius grandson of a former president), Yi-jeong (a pottery prodigy) and Woo-bin (lol the forgotten member that doesn't add much to the show but he's the son of a mob boss). Shenanigans and love triangles ensue.

Boys Over Flowers was made in 2009 and it SHOWS. (lol did you like the Blingee i found for this post to really get us into the 2009 frame of mind?) Not just in the hair and fashion (ESPECIALLY THE HAIR OH MY GOD THE HAIR ON THE BOYS), but in the kind of stuff it was acceptable for male leads to get away with and still be seen as desirable and an aspirational romantic partner. But you know what, viewing it through a 2009 lens, I get it. I get why it was such a massive hit. I am pretty sure that "almost paaaaradise" is now permanently engraved on my soul because damn the theme song is catchy as fuck and I can see why it's a common joke and a cultural reference.

That said... We can all agree the Jun-pyo sucks, right? lol. Goddamn he's just so sullen and sulky and surly and spoiled and like why does Jan-di want to be with him? IDGI. I hate the idea that she has to be with him because she's the only one who can make him act like a decent person or whatever. Like he doesn't really bring anything to enhance her life. Jun-pyo has only ever added pain and drams to Jan-di's life. Ji-hoo, on the other hand, actually makes Jan-di laugh and smile, and she seems to genuinely enjoy spending time with him, even just doing mundane things? Like in ep 23 there are two separate flashback montage scenes. One with Jan-di and Ji-hoo and there are a lot of cute and fun memories. And then one with Jun-pyo and Jan-di and it's like... 3 scenes because that's all the footage there is of them being happy together, lmao. Whatever. I'm not going to get mad over ships from a 2009 K-drama that is based on a manga from the 90s and has been adapted a million times. I will just accept it and instead focus on the MUCH better ship...

Ga-eul and Yi-jeong!! Ga-eul is Jan-di's best friend since kindergarten and Yi-jeong is the member of F4 who is a pottery prodigy. Their relationship is a much slower burn and I think that's why I was more invested. Yi-jeong actually worked through his issues over time in a believable way so I was way more inclined to root for him to get his shit together and end up with the sweetie Ga-eul.

Ok, so a lot has happened in episodes 10 - 14 of Boys Over Flowers.

You know, I'm surprised it took me this long to come to the realization that this is another soap opera type kdrama. lol.

Under the cut, it's just me regurgitating the plot basically. Some of it is just so ridiculous, I don't know how else to process it other than typing it into the void.

Rich guy Gu Jun-pyo's mother tried to pay off Geum Jan-di's family so she'd stop dating her son. When they refuse she sets out to destroy their lives/dry cleaning business! When even that doesn't deter them, she pays a guy to kidnap Jan-di and convince her to give up. However, the guy also wants revenge on Jun-pyo for what he did to his brother in episode 1, so he lures in Jun-pyo and beats the crap out of him. He's about to hit him with a chair, but Jan-di jumps in the way and takes the hit. Then Jun-pyo's 3 friends, Yoon Ji-hoo, So Yi-jeong, Song Woo-bin (they call themselves the F4) show up to rescue them.

Two episodes later we learn that the chair that hit Jan-di injured her shoulder and she has to give up swimming! The only thing she feels she's good at.

Later, Jun-pyo's father dies and so now Jun-pyo has to take over as CEO of his huge family empire. Fast forward 6 months and Jun-pyo hasn't had time to contact his friends or girlfriend Jan-di. 6 months?! Jan-di saves up money and takes a plane to Jun-pyo in Macau.

She gets into trouble, but the F4, or at least 3/4 of them, pop up and rescue her. And they still can't get Jun-pyo to meet them.

Episode 14: Oh, Jun-pyo being owner of his company means he's responsible for keeping the company profitable, which also makes him responsible for the 700 thousand families employed by his company.

She finally talks to him and he dumps her! Now she's hanging out with Yoon Ji-hoo, who she liked at the beginning of the show, but he gave her up so Jun-pyo could be happy. But he's always liked her.
