For two decades, no one has touched the files of an abandoned project, once a spark of hope, now a shameful page of history. But after a violent conflict between two rivaling corporations, they have both decided to restart the project as their joint flagship project, either to show the world that they can, too, work together, or to show the other corporations they can't be beat.

While everything looks fine from the public's point of view, not everything is as well as it seems. Tensions between the two rivaling corporations, pressure in the project itself, and as a cherry on the top, concerns about the person who was picked for one of the top roles - and who had caused the previous project to end in a rather chaotic way. And who is not afraid to voice its opinions loudly again.

Cynosure follows a scientist, returning to the project it had hoped to forget, desperately trying to do things well this time, and not let others ruin it all. It also follows a corporate agent, placed into the project to watch over the work atmosphere and make sure nothing bad happens. And of course, as we all can guess, something bad happens.

I'M SO EXCITED TO BE SHARING THIS, eden's story has undergone so many revisions and rough drafts and rewrites since 2021. it originally began as a victorian gothic setting with vampires, but after never being satisfied with it and constantly trying to make it into something that i actually liked, i've finally found what i want to do with his character after three years of work and completely rehauling everything. it means a lot to me and i'm genuinely so excited to finish this and share it with you all !!

Quantum Immortality WIP Intro

Being trapped in a time loop with no way out is already bad. When a strange girl ambushes Cade, inserts a metal chip into the back of his neck while he’s passed out, and then shows up as the last-minute addition to his spaceship crew the next day… that doesn’t help. After being rescued from an abandoned, alien-infested spaceship and then waking up with no memory on a Mars base six months ago, nineteen-year-old Cade’s been doing his best to help out the crew that found him. His “first” flight with them will be delivering supplies to Earth, where the more privileged members of humanity live, sheltered from the parasitic aliens infecting the solar system by shields enveloping the planet. Every time Cade sets off on this journey, he dies, waking up a few days before departure with a stabbing pain just below his ribcage and no memory of the trip, let alone what or who killed him. The girl is a new addition, though - and if Cade can survive being stuck in a metal box in space with her, maybe he can finally find a way out of the loop.

QUANTUM IMMORTALITY is a science fiction novel currently being drafted by Phoenix R. (that's me!). It is planned to be approximately 80,000 words in length. Currently, the first draft is in progress, so the blurb above and character bios below may change!

An amnesiac stuck in a time loop. Short (5'2" or approximately 157.5 cm). Chin-length, curly dark brown hair. Noticeably skinny. Skin is a tawny brown, and eyes are a deep brown. Speaks with an odd accent that can't quite be placed. Cane user and ambulatory wheelchair user due to chronic fatigue and dizziness. Surprisingly deep voice.

Athena

she/her | asexual butch trans woman | 19

The mysterious new addition to the crew. She's rather blunt and tends to keep to herself, increasing Cade's suspicions. She's quite tall too at 6'4" and has short-cropped, fiery red hair. In addition, she suffers from a severe case of resting bitch face.

Trevor

he/him | bisexual cisgender man | 22

The crew's ship technician. Took on Cade as his apprentice when they joined the crew. Best friends with Max and has known most of the crew for years. Fairly tall and somewhat muscular, dark brown hair, and hazel eyes.

Olivia

she/they | pansexual cisgender woman | 23

A long-time member of the crew. Originally from a space station orbiting Venus, studied biochemistry in university there. Now she works as the ship's medic. Dark skin, curly black hair, and warm brown eyes.

Max

he/him | cisgender straight man | 24

The ship's security guard. Best friends with Trevor. Doesn't get along very well with Cade, as he tends to push boundaries. Blonde hair, blue eyes, and short (only a few inches taller than Cade).

The Captain

The crew's captain. Nobody ever refers to her as her real name, and at this point Cade is too scared to ask what it is. Dirty blonde hair, light skin, and green eyes.

helloo everyone! i’m ali (she/her/hers) and I am so excited to be here.

I’ve been on tumblr quite a long time (and lurked around writeblr) but never quite felt confident enough with my writing to post or even really talk about it.

I decided that this year I was going to be brave and finally join in on all the fun, inspiring people here on writeblr and post my work.

I am currently working on my first novel, “The Darkest Hour”.

WIP (RE)INTRO | A KINGDOM BETRAYED

synopsis |

Tensions in the kingdom of Arla have never been higher. Their diplomatic relations with other countries across the Lucent Sea are strained. Old magic that hasn't been seen in at least fifty years is bleeding back into the kingdom, causing sickness and fear wherever it goes. Something is deeply wrong. It all comes to a head when the prince returns from a hunting trip half dead, and his entire personal guard killed. Helen Mast is determined to prove herself. A squire in the king's army, all Helen wants is to be granted the rank of knight and protect the kingdom she loves. A chance encounter with Muriel, head of the king's personal guard, leads to Helen being chosen to undertake a quest to retrieve a long lost magical artifact that grants unspeakable power to the worthy few able to wield it. It's the only thing, the king believes, that can give the kingdom enough power to save itself. She's joined by Cordelia Langston, eldest daughter of one of the oldest noble families in Arla. Cory has her own reasons for wanting to join the quest, reasons she's unwilling to share. As the two journey deep into the heart of Arla, they discover secrets more deadly than the last — and a conspiracy that threatens to destroy the kingdom as they know it.

Most of the stories I write are inspired by two things: fairytales and horror. A majority of my WIPs are either directly inspired or loosely based on some fairytale, folklore, or myth, and most are part of some genre of horror, whether it be Gothic, psychological, folk, survival, or supernatural. Also a lot of my writing influence comes from authors like Angela Carter, Sarah Waters, Caitlin Starling, Shirley Jackson, and Robin McKinley.

Whitechapel, London 1894.  Sophie Wickes and her family struggle to survive, melancholy eats away at her father more and more with each passing day, and her passion for cultivating flowers procures no income. She must swallow her pride and set aside her hatred for England’s aristocracy when she’s offered a chance of employment by the reclusive Lord Edgar Cushing to tend the gardens of his Rosenthorne Hall. However, the estate, its gardens, and their master is nothing what Sophie expected. The house? Rotting, dilapidated, hideous. The gardens? The husk of something alive, whimsical, and beautiful. The master? Faceless, nothing more than a voice from the shadows. Despite her fear and anger, Sophie becomes enthralled by the garden’s potential for mystic, untainted beauty, and she develops a close friendship with Lord Cushing, even though he is nothing but a mere whisper of darkness that pleads for her to never seek him out. However, whatever enchantment the gardens and Lord Cushing’s voice bring her shatters as she begins to receive nightly visitations from a crooked-jawed phantom and butterflies who’s wings whisper of a bloody past and the truth behind the faceless lord's gentlemanly masquerade.

In a loose (and bloody) retelling of the King Lindworm folktale set against the backdrop of 1980s Milwaukee, two people try to navigate their unorthodox romance while an arcane, snake-like infection afflicts, and starts to change, one of them. Temperance Cavell, a six-foot tall woman living in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, lives a quiet, unexciting, and demure existence running a convenience store with her mother. But despite her mother's overbearing nature, the nonstop caring of her ailing grandmother, and her near-nonexistent social life, she cannot complain. This life is quiet, she’s (somewhat) in control, and nothing is unexpected… That is until Jack Turner, the motorcycle-riding kleptomaniac with a heart of gold, bursts into her store one Saturday afternoon, and between them a romance reluctantly blooms. But such love is swiftly threatened to shatter when Jack’s body begins to betray him, contorting him into something that is completely, and utterly, non-human.

November, 1899. While on holiday in Cambridge and attending museum lectures with her mother, Jane Sterling seeks to make this her chance to officially pursue her love of paleontology. While her family encourages the pursuit of passions and challenging rigid social norms, the institutes in place hinder her passion, making her resort to dressing brightly and speaking loudly for attention. Jane's chance comes to reveal itself in the form of the wealthy and reclusive Sir Terence Hayes, who’s come in search for her father, the esteemed paleobotonist Dr. Samson Sterling, to appraise fossils found in his garden. Her mother eagerly volunteers Jane to go in Dr. Sterling’s place as he remains ill in America, and Terence brings her to his isolated family's estate in the vast, deep, muddy marshes of Wolf’s Run. And the land is shrouded in urban legends. There are whispers of 'The Wolf's Run Beast,' the 'Monster of the Marshes,' that haunts the land under the cover of night, and as Terence leaves Jane to her work he is hell-bent that she's to return to Cambridge before nightfall. However, freak storms rage, causing the marshes' waters to rise and wash out the roads in flash floods before Jane has a chance to return, leaving her stranded at Wolf’s Run - and at the mercy of all that lurks there. As night looms, the staff hastily depart, an eerie silence falls, Terence forbids her from even coming near the cellar, and, most importantly, he warns her against leaving her room before dawn. All is merely a strange act to Jane, brushing it off as the eccentricities of an Englishman, until something comes scratching at her door, hungering for her blood. What started as a mere chance at becoming known swiftly becomes a tumultuous game of blood, teeth, survival, love, and salvation - and Jane must prepare to sharpen teeth of her own if she's to survive the horrors of the Wolf's Run marshes.

Selene Radcliffe is a young freshly-graduated detective, having spent long hours and many sleepless nights researching, studying, and looking through cold case files in an effort to prove herself as skilled of a private investigator as her late father, the renowned and well-respected Det. Arthur Radcliffe. However, she is a woman in a predominately male profession, a woman without a voice–literally and figuratively–and she wants to make a name for herself without relying on whatever legacy her father left behind. When the presence of a serial killer who the media has named “The Big Bad Wolf” on account of the strange, animalistic nature of his murders that occur on the nights of a full moon begin to plague the streets of Milwaukee, Selene sees this as her opportunity to prove herself and her skills to her peers, and she tasks herself and her partner Det. Apollo Esposito to hunt him down.  But it swiftly becomes apparent that the man they are hunting is no man, and may instead be a dreaded creature of folklore–one that is now keen on hunting them down in a blood-red game of cat and mouse…

Loosely based on the fairytales Sleeping Beauty and East of the Sun, West of the Moon, as well as Scandinavian folklore, The Faeries and The Lark follows three faeries–spirits of nature–raising a human child they’ve named Lark, the princess of a sun-worshipping kingdom wiped out by a subterranean society of trolls. The faeries devote their lives to protecting Lark from the worlds of man by raising her to believe she’s one of the fae, and to keep her deep in the forest so that she can remain hidden from the trolls that restlessly hunt for the princess that escaped their massacre. But everything the three faeries worked hard for is put to the test when Lark encounters a human named Sigrid, the toughened, sword-wielding chancellor’s daughter from a neighboring moon-worshipping kingdom that’s threatened to be swallowed by the fairies’ forest, and every aspect of her life as she’d known them threaten to crumble around her.

Violins and Violets - Series - WIP page

1784: Katharina Schmidt and her brother Hans grew up composing and performing music for royalty all over Europe. Now they are adults, only Hans is allowed to pursue his music, while Katharina's father tells her it's time to find a husband and settle down. Katharina's attempts to do as she's told only convince her that it's not what she wants to do, and she must decide how far she's willing to go to keep making music.

Hello, friends! It's been a minute since I updated the links on my blog, and I have just seen that I still have the "Beta Readers Wanted" post linked to the "Violins and Violets (WIP)" button... from the draft I finished and started querying in 2019 / 2020!

Things have... changed somewhat since then...

"Violins and Violets" is now a series, of (I expect) five books. None of them have titles yet, so I'm just referring to them as "Violins and Violets 1," etc. I thought it was time to make a new WIP page.

Book 1 tag - WIP page - first draft completed in December 2023, second draft in May 2024. (Earlier titled "Ladies Don't Write Music" - but this may be a better name for Book 2.)

Book 2 tag - WIP page - first draft completed in January 2024, now writing second draft in June and July 2024.

Book 3 tag - early planning stages, hoping to create outline in October 2024, with a view to writing the first draft in November and December 2024. Hoping to redraft in 2025.

Book 4 tag - hoping to plan and draft in 2025.

Book 5 tag - hoping to plan and draft in 2025 or 2026.

Series tag - all posts made about "Violins and Violets" since I realised it needed to be a series, no matter what book I'm talking about.

Everything "Violins and Violets" - the whole story, right from the beginning, when I started writing the first draft of a single book for Camp NaNoWriMo in April 2018.

One-Shots - short stories that I've written for the "Violins and Violets" world.

"Vogeltje" - another novel that takes place in the same world, and features some of the same characters.

I'm trying to bring each book in somewhere around 75,000 words, taking three months to write a first draft, and two months for each subsequent draft. I find it easier to focus on the story proper when I write quickly and regularly, so when I have a draft on the go, I try to write every day. Between drafts, I am trying to take whole months off writing, so that I can rest my creative muscles, as it were.

Katharina Schmidt - musical prodigy and composer who performed for royalty as a child, but is no longer allowed, because she's a woman. Disguises herself as "Sebastien", and flees Salzburg to start a composing career in Prague

Hans Schmidt - brother of Katharina, who is also a musical prodigy and composer, but is allowed to pursue his music as an adult.

Franz Schmidt - solicitor; father of Katharina and Hans, who wants to see his daughter married well enough to put silly ideas of music out of her head.

Julia Schmidt - lady of leisure; mother of Katharina and Hans; wife of Franz, who loves to make tapestries and knitted garments; wants the best for her children and is willing to let Franz decide what this is.

Barbara Kirkmann - housemaid to the Schmidts, Katharina's closest friend and confidante.

Elisabeth Meyer - daughter of Franz' boss, Katharina's first "acceptable" friend, and the oldest sister of many siblings; keen to get married and start a life of her own.

Miléna von Tritten - Elisabeth's best friend, and daughter of one of the Meyer firm's wealthiest clients, Baron von Tritten; expected to marry a noble, but totally absorbed in Johann Schneider.

Johann Schneider - training to be a magistrate, under pressure to get married, but totally uninterested in... anyone? All the ladies want him; none of them can catch him. Absolutely tone-deaf, but loves to watch musicians play; friends with Katharina.

Louisa Schneider - Johann's younger sister, also tone-deaf, but keen to become a musician under Katharina's tutelage.

Magdalena Fialová - an opera singer who wants to get more young women into music; one of "Sebastien's" first and best friends in Prague.

Miklós Kovács - a fellow violinist who persuades the management of the Malá Strana Opera House to give "Sebastien" an audition. Best friend of Magdalena, and very close with "Sebastien".

Background:

Yes, Katharina Schmidt is based on Maria Anna "Nannerl" Mozart, who deserved a much better life than she got. I have always wondered what would have happened if she had defied her father when he told her to stop composing. Would she have known as much fame as her brother?

Yes, Katharina Schmidt is a lesbian. That's because she's only based on a real person; she isn't actually Nannerl Mozart. I have no idea what Nannerl Mozart would have called herself, or how she felt, and I think it would be rude for me to try to guess. This part of Katharina's character is inspired less by history than by my own experiences and desire to see more representation of Queer people in historical fiction. (She's not the only person in the series who isn't straight! Who are the others? You'll have to read the books to find out... or just follow here; I'm yappy about it.)

Title: Names in Their Blood

Format: Novel

Series: Second Sentinels. This is book 2 in the series. Book 1 is currently free as an ebook, or for actual money in paper or audiobook.

Genre: Near future scifi/ low neon cyberpunk/ superheroes/ small town mystery/ little bit Midwest gothic?/ YA into NA. Trust me it all works together I swear.

Synopsis Four queer teens on the fringes of the superheroing world head to a small town in Minnesota for what’s supposed to be a month off. Officially, they’re there for some stressful family reunions and to use the only full hospital for genetically altered people in the US. But, when they realize that the government beuro that gives the Sentinels their missions has been hiding the disappearances of missing alterds for years, it sets them in the path of a mission that has them questioning who they can trust.

Opal hadn’t realized when she came to Chicago to join the Sentinels that she’d be joining an extremely complicated family. She certainty didn’t plan to start dating the former team leader’s fierce but fragile daughter. But how can she feel like she belongs here when she can’t pick a superhero name, every effort she makes to reform the corruption in superheroing blows up in her face, her superiors are mad at her, and her girlfreind is holding resentments Opal doesn’t understand? At least she finally gets to stay in a fancy, romantic Victorian manor house.

As the non-superpowered oldest child of legendary hero LodeStar and medical technologies magnate Dr Melissa Tillman, Issac’s born the brunt of much of the worst of growing up embroiled in the world of superheroes. That’s included kidnapping, threats of torture, and losses he doesn’t know how to cope with. Now, he’s trying to set aside his resentment and focus on being a good adoptive dad to the world’s first feeling, sentient AI. Now that xe knows that some survivors of the genetic-engineering cultist that built xyr father’s first family are still alive, xe has to contend with the fears, connections, and obligations xe’s inherited. The worst injury of xyr life so far, and a growing fear that xe's a danger to the people around xyr isn’t making competing loyalties any easier to deal with.

After years of very temporary fostercare placements it’s almost a relief to live full time in Coldwater Clinic Hospital, where nobody is paying that much attention to her anymore. When she met a retired superhero, and they saved each other, she counted herself lucky. But now that heroes old family are in town, with very mixed feelings about the new teenager in their lost family members life. Between the 7ft superhero trainee giving her palpitations and the potentially evil scientist suddenly hanging around her defacto home, her secrets- and her heart- might be in danger.

Now that she’s no longer the youngest in the family thanks to her AI nibbling, Jamie wants to let go of her bitterness for all the ways she’s been left behind, and think about her future. It’s nobodies fault that she didn’t inherit her dad’s superpowers, even if she did get his temperament, and she knows that while Opal may appreciate her acerbic sense of humor, bitternes isn’t going to help her keep the girlfriend she doesn’t really think she deserves. When she gets an offer that would put dreams she gave up long ago within her reach, she has to choose. Will she follow in the other Sentinel's footsteps- all the way to her own self-destruction?

Story:: People keep disappearing in Neo Arcadia, but no one is talking about it. In fact, it's like they're doing their best to ignore it, brushing it off as people just wanting a “new life.” But journalist Arden Scott isn’t so sure about that. This many disappearances in such a short time can’t be a coincidence. Armed with endless curiosity, a lack of self-preservation, and a nervous scientist, Arden plans on breaking this case wide open.

She’s not the only one. When Lucky Phathoparuk’s partner goes missing, and no one bats an eye at the strange circumstances, she promises herself and Nell that she’ll get to the bottom of it, even if that means betraying the institution she trained so long to get into, giving up her dreams, and dragging her new partner down with her.

For Nell, well she’s just trying to survive. Snatched from the safety of her home into the hands of strange scientists who rather poke and prod her than answer her questions. She manages to flee but only into the lap of the infamous Underworld’s leader, who seems to have no intentions of letting her go. Nell will have to overcome her fears, and face herself if she intends to make it out of this in one piece.

The Core of You takes place on an alternate Earth in the year 2050. This Earth is made up of two overlapping Planes, one called the Core Plane where humans reside, and the Nihil Plane, where a species known as the Nilihum resides. 

Humans in this world are all born with a coin-shaped organ embedded into their heart called an Elemental Core. The Cores imbue people with various types of elemental energy which can affect varying aspects of their person, from appearances to personalities, and even abilities. Cores also range in strength, with every person being measured on a scale of 1 to 10. The higher grade a person has the stronger effect their core has on them. 

The Nilihum are a humanoid species that reside in the mysterious Nihil plane and enter the Core plane at places called Fractures. Which are simply weak intersection spots of the planes. Nilihum constantly seeks out cores as a source of vitality, often leading to outbreaks at Fracture Zones. Not much is known about the Nihil plane or the urge that drives Nilihum. 

To combat the Nilihum epidemic, a federal organization was created called CoreDivision which is the leading force in dealing with the Nilihum. CoreTech is responsible for the monitoring systems set up around Fracture zones, as well as the creation and production of anti-Nihil weapons. CoreLabs takes up the study of the Nilihum and cores themselves, dedicating their time to see what makes the species tick and what is it about cores that entices them so. Finally, CoreGuard aims to protect the public from stray Nilihum attacks and ensure Nilihum outbreaks are swiftly taken care of.

The two's differing ideologies set them at odds. Can Lucky learn to tame the fire in her core? Or will her eagerness burn her to cinders? And just what happened to Lucky's old partner?

We all need something to believe in. Some of us find that satisfaction in God itself, or some god in some religion maybe not many believe in. That belief though, doesn't always have to be towards anything that we usually connect spirituality and belief towards. More than ever these days, we connect that blind belief and connection towards some other person, or group that feels bigger than human, almost like False Gods old testament warned us from.

LOVE BRADLEY (V.O.):

We act as though the idols, actresses… singers, are more than humans we worship for giving us comfort in bad times, or happiness when we don’t get it from anything else. Well, till they show how human they really are.

[Cut to me, sitting behind the cluttered desk full of research, looking directly into the camera.]

LOVE BRADLEY:

Today on Love and Murder, we delve deep into the False Gods scandal, and the trial of Beatrix Jones, one that has now become a media frenzy. What makes a human want to say yes to a deal of fame and crime? Who really are the quartet behind False Gods? And most importantly, who really is Beatrix Jones, the woman in the center of all of this?

When discovering other neighboring civilizations and teaming up with then, humans gained access to technologies they never though they could have - quick space travel, way to send messages to planets in different systems, and terraforming. While most are keen on exploring the new worlds, some on the Earth still haven't forgotten one of their biggest goals. Terraforming Mars.

It's been ten years since the first group of settlers arrived to Mars. While the terraforming technology, construction robots, farming robots and a few specialists from other planets have already made it a habitable little colony when they arrived, there are still problems. The leaders have divided into groups based on what industry they want Mars to concentrate on, where should they live and, most importantly, how to keep the big, bad caring Earth happy with progress.

Quinn has dreamed of leaving Earth, partly to escape some things in his life and partly to see the world. But dealing with lots of aliens on other planets seems like a step too big for him to take. Joining a fresh colony on Mars, on the other hand, might work well. He thinks of all the opportunities there will be, as he sneaks into the ship with a stolen ID from one of those chosen for the second group of colonists, who might have gotten a bit too drunk in the bar. Quinn did leave him an apology letter, though.
