Why is 2010 your cut off point? 23-year-old Will Young won Pop Idol in 2002 and came out as gay the next day. Sony still signed him and he had a great career. Joe McElderry won XFactor in 2009 and also came out. They were both signed to Sony, both young and handsome but nobody stopped them coming out.

It was my cut off point because that's when 1d signed. Will Young was never popular outside the UK. Sony also signed him because he won, that was his price for winning. Joe McElderly was never popular outside the UK either. I can't even name one song of them each and i watched both those shows. They didn’t have thousands of young teenage fans throwing themselves at them. Will and Joe had more grown and mature fans (who didn’t project their fantasies upon them). They were primarily good singers, but had little to offer in showmanship and charisma. They both peaked not long after their winning season. They came out, but nobody is talking about either of them now.

Also, as i've said before it's not H or L being gay that's the problem here. It's that they are a couple. With 1d, txf saw the surge in their popularity and signed them even though they came in third place. The label saw the potential to break America and become known world wide. Because of the labels ambitions and 1d's lack of bargaining power coming in third place, they were placed under stricter conditions. Maybe Syco/Sony also learned from Will and Joe coming out, who knows. Either way i don't think it's very comparable.

So another major boyband who has a member that came out as gay [his gross ass ex beard outed him] recently made it known they just got married to their long term boyfriend.

Almost every major american or british 90s to 2010s boyband has had a member come out as gay.

New kids on the block - gay member

Jonathan the member who came out recently said him and his partner Harley have been together since 2008 it's now 2022. Damn a long term hidden gay relationship is possible within the music industry especially amongst boyband noted.

Nsync - gay member

Lance the member who came out specifically said "statistically speaking one of the members of 1D is gay [but] the market is 100 percent young women and they fantasize about these [1D] guys" so left unsaid they reminded closeted. Lance went on to say he felt like he had his friends career in his hands and in charge of the band thought him coming out would ruin the band. So Lance didn't come out until way later and during nsync days he was shown as the womanizer of his group with a new women on his arm often sound VERY filmiliar.

Union J - gay member

This band was on the xfactor and George the member who came out said in an interview “bc of the situation I was in – in the public eye selling records aimed at young girls – I feel like I was made to believe, and made to think, because of the things I was being told and the way I was conditioned, that it would’ve jeopardised the band’s career and in turn jeopardise my own career.” Something VERY similar to what Lance said and former xfactor performer being closeted we haven't heard that one before.

Westlife - gay member

This band was run by Cowbell with Feehily the member who came out having kept his sexual orination private all throughout peak fame and never discussed hus private life even tho he had "public gfs" sound VERY familiar.

The Wanted - A member openly admitted the wanted were willing to have gay sex when asked

That was Jay but Tom another member stated speak for yourself so was it just Jay's subtle way in a "joking matter" to admit he would ??? On top of this one of the member made a side comment once that yeah one of the 1D boys is probably gay.

I'm probably missing some but these are ones I specfically know off. And all these offically out members of popular UK or US boybands have talked about the same thing. How being in a boyband meant being treated like shit and believing based on what they were told if they came out as gay it would ruin the bands career so they hid their true self.

This shows it's not crazy for us to think one or more of the 1D boys is gay when so many major boybands have had a member come out and even said yeah 1D most likely had a gay member !!

I mean the decade thing makes sense, but they signed with Columbia in 2011, so...

columbia is just a subsidiary of sony, and recording contracts are different from label agreement contracts which are also different from mgmt contracts which can also be different from pr contracts (and those are just the types of contracts that i, as a novice who is not at all involved in the music industry, know about; for all i know there could be even more). there’s bound to be some overlap among many, if not all, of these ofc, but each of them are also gonna have their own separate clauses and agreements and obligations, which may or may not relate/go hand in hand with each other.

plus there’s also their original individual xfactor contestant contracts with syco, which if the x-factor contract is anything at all like the agt and bgt contracts (which i suspect it very much is) then competing on the show alone meant that almost everything about them was pretty much literally owned by syco for up to a decade (or possibly even longer thanks to the clause that says syco can extend those licenses however and whenever they want), to say nothing of whatever else the boys may have signed away in all the other types of contracts mentioned above.

we can assume, based on the news about louis, that as of now they are all probably free from their original individual xfactor contestant contracts with syco. but the keyword there is “individual.” as a band they had to re-sign with syco in december 2010 (december 13th to be precise) as part of their recording contract deal. that deal, at least according to reports, was initially only meant to be a 3-year contract which they again re-renewed in 2013 for another 2 years (i.e. until 2015). this is all according to reports from official 1dhq mouthpieces though so imo is to be taken with a grain of salt, but that’s neither here not there really. moving on to their deal with columbia that you mentioned, that was made in november 2011 and my understanding of it is that it was strictly to be able to allow them to legally record music in the u.s. as well (as opposed to just the uk where their music was only licensed to be recorded with syco, it being a uk-based recording company and not a u.s.-based one). but again this all about RECORDING contracts only, and says nothing as to what kinds of other contracts (or the lengths of those contracts) they had to agree with for all the other aspects of their career, including their mgmt with modest, which we all know is heavily connected to/associated with syco. all that said, i would not be surprised at all if most, if not every single one of the contracts involved in their career as a band and even as individuals (prior to their solo careers), was tied back to syco in some way, shape, or form.

it’s pretty clear just based on niall’s continued endeavors with modest golf, that they all very likely still have some sort of ties and obligation to modest despite not being (primarily/on the surface anyway) under modest’s management for almost 5 years now. this is compounded by the fact that zayn’s first solo album was still listed as being copyrighted under simco, a sister company to syco, despite him reportedly having cut all ties to syco and 1dhq at the time. so given all of that, and just how insidious, disgusting, and notoriously/ridiculously long-lasting and all-encompassing music industry contracts are in general, but specifically those with syco and sony, my gut tells me that there is also a very, very good chance that whatever they were beholden to in the band (mainly regarding their public images and pr obligations) largely still stands to this day. 

now although certain things seem to suggest that at least some of those obligations may be starting to come to an end, we obviously can’t know for sure and i could be completely wrong on that. the 10 year end theory was always mostly just a guesstimate based on the limited information available to us, and we could be wrong on that as well. but certain things (like louis suddenly publicly following harry and zayn within just days after being released from his individual txf syco contract, and both him and niall publicly mentioning/tagging zayn after 5 years of barely acknowledging him at all) make me hopeful that the 10 year end theory may still hold some weight. is there a possibility that certain things may extend even longer past the 10 year mark? absolutely. but that doesn’t mean that there’s not some that might still have ended or be coming to an end this year as well. 

anyways sorry this got so long and turned into a little bit of a rant about all the differences between type of contract, but i hope this clears things up for this nonnie and anyone else who may be confused on this subject (for which i totally don’t blame you because tbf it is very confusing lol)

Their origin story is that xfactor used to be a HUGE SHOW in the uk. Like the people who were on xfactor were talked about in gossip mags and on the news etc. And the 2010 season was the biggest. So basically once 1d were put together, they became insanely huge over each week which lead them to coming 3rd. And with the rise of social media at the time they just skyrocketed in popularity

oh!! see, i didn’t realize how big x factor was in the UK because now when i think of the x factor, i really don’t see how that would be conducive to the fame and popularity that one direction was able to achieve. but this makes a lot more sense, it’s like going on a show that was already extremely popular and then becoming popular from that (along with social media)

Listening to the pod Thai episode a ye little mix was on xfactor uk like the year after one direction and they were like the equivalent female version of one D but not as successful. Still extremely successful in 2010s tho

One thing to keep in mind is those previous judges released when xfactor was a more popular show. At the end of last season it had slipped to 3rd in the ratings. Even with the boys on (H,L,L) ratings did not move up substantially. The finale had big names (pink) and didn’t move up. This season production is being trimmed (disguised as revamp) but really trying to cut costs (less shows).This implies lower profits which means drop in ad revenue. In all questionable benefit to Louis.

There is some truth to this - X-factor definitely isn’t the show it was in 2010. Although the fact that you expect 1D members in particular to make a difference to tv ratings is a very fandom centred approach - they didn’t and they wouldn’t and they never have.

The reason I pointed out that judges have had success releasing albums is to respond to the exaggeration and catastrophizing - not because Louis is in the same position of any of them - he’s not.

But I think fandom has no sense of proportion when it comes to X-factor ratings.  It’s not doing as well as it was, but millions of people still watch it.  Far more people watch X-factor than the Graham Norton Show.  More people watch X-factor in the UK than watch any of the late night talk show in the US (and the US has 8 times the population of the UK).  

The ratings will be down again when the show starts airing in September.  There will be lots of articles about its declining ratings.  But it will still expose Louis to a substantial audience on a weekly basis.  

I’m sad that he’s doing it, as I’ve made clear multiple times, but I think the fandom discussion is zero sum in a way that isn’t evidence based.

Evaluation

Project evaluation;

My timeline; I started writing songs when I was 7/8 years old. I was in a girl band called the diamond pink lashes. It consists of 3 people and we all assigned each other different parts. I was the song writer, one girl was the choreography and the other was in charge of merchandise. We used to do shows in our communal garden for all our neighbours. Then when we moved, I started writing a lot more as my mum always corrected me on my spelling. I started writing about bullying as I was bullied in school for wearing glasses. As time went on, I got deeper into depression and anxiety. I suffered with an eating disorder when I was 13/14. I have so many note pads of unfinished lyrics still to this day, even in my planner at school. Coming up to 15, is when I first performed in front of my first audience at platform. The track was called "societies to blame" based on the issues we face today. At 16, I made my first song called "don't let go" which is about not letting depression get the better of you. 17 is when I released my first EP and now I'm doing the urban development course with Tileyard.

Musical time line 'inspired artists';

I'm 1998, My nan was always obsessed with Elvis and my mum was with madonna so I mainly heard them. I used to hear people like usher, destinys child and notorious B.I.G.

1999 is when I heard Britney Spears, TLC, JLO and Enrique Iglesias. 2000 is when I started dancing to artists such as Christina Aguilera, Pink, Santana, Nelly and N Sync.

2001 is when I first heard of Missi Elliot. She inspired me a lot still to this day. She as a lot of energy and is so lyrically gifted.

2002 is when I started listening to people like Eminem, April lavigne, sugarbabes and Sean Paul. By this time I started developing my own sense of music which was an up beat tempo style which I loved.

2003 is when the uprising of Beyoncé was thriving through the music charts, along with people like 50 cent, Black eye peas and Outkast.

2004 is when I grasped on to dancing a lot more when I heard "cha cha slide" by DJ Casper. Anastasia was My favourite at the time because our family used to do 'sing star night' on the PlayStation and I loved singing 'left outside alone'. This is when I started listening /getting inspired by Chris brown.

2005 is when pussycats evolved for me aswell as people like akon, Rihanna and mario.

2006, I loved shakira as she made more cultural music and o loved James blunt for his words to "you're beautiful".

2007, was timberland, Sean Kingston, Soulja boy and Leona Lewis.

My favourite song from 2008 would be '4 minutes' by Madonna and Justin Timberlake. I loved this song because the video was very creative and it was a mixture of old sound with new to me. Justin timberlake showed a newer sound compared to Madonna and I absolutely loved the outcome.

2009 is when I was obsessed with the boy band JLS from Xfactor. I admired them because I loved how they composed their songs together in the group and let's face it, I was a fan girl of this new creative, gorgeous boy band.

2010 is when I listened to Katy perry, Bruno mars and the song "love the way you lie" by Rihanna and Eminem. I loved how the song fitted perfectly with rap and slow type hip hop.

2011 was filled of lady gaga, Jessie j, Jason derulo and pitbull.

2012, was flo rida, Nicki minaj, and Macklemore.

2013 was passenger, one republic and miles Cyrus.

2014, pharrel Williams, Jess Glynn and fuse odg. I loved the music from fuse odg as it was so addictive to dance to.

2015, ferry wap, Justin bieber and Ellie Goulding.

2016 was an interesting one as I started hearing more of future, desigiiner, drake and g-eazy.

Now, I listen to a variety of uk artists and American artists but I like the uk rap scene such as people like j hus, mo stack, Dave, giggs, krept and Konan, chipmunk, yungen and wstrn.

I've gone through variety of genres from evanescence to reaggaeton but I would say that I'm focused on Hip/hop or uk rap scene music.

I would say all of the artists above from this point, reflect on me as I'm inspired by all of them. To me, a song has to have meaning. It must be a feeling of some sort that expresses who you are as a person, whether it's personal or relatable. The most I'm inspired by is Chris brown as he's been doing music from a young age and is still rising up with his new album containing 45 new songs. I like to think that I love black music because of the way it is done. I love the fact black people can come together, dance and call each other family. I like the idea of their peace and harmony when they dance. I'm absolutely inspired by their culture. I love any music I'm able to move my feet to because it makes me happy and more confident in my skin.

My new goals are to make a variety of tracks to different genres to show that I love diversity and a good challenge. I love the idea of different kind of music but from the same artist to show that everyone can come together and celebrate music.

The new action I would take to do so would be to make my own beats/ instrumentals to create and do research on how certain genres are made. To me, I think if you can do every genre, you'll be able to reach out to people every where around the world. I think this would be a great idea as it will show I'm not showing any injustice to any musical culture or creativity
