Yoga & Poetry: Kumbhaka

Kumbhaka

, is a Sanskrit term meaning "breath retention". It is the interruption or break in the breath; the space between the breaths. Each breath arising out of stillness, each breath returning and merging back into stillness.

Classical Western poetry has always used kumbhaka, referred to as a "caesura"—a repeating pause in a poetic line or sentence.This poem by American poet Longfellow is a beautiful example, its repeating caesurae and tidal imagery entraining our breath to its rhythmic rise and fall, inhale...exhale...

The tide rises, the tide falls,

The twilight darkens, the curlew calls;

Along the sea-sands damp and brown

The traveller hastens toward the town,

And the tide rises, the tide falls.
