Something i really like about yohaji is its distinction between relationships with peers amd relationships with superiors.

One thing i thought was kinda silly at the begining was that haruaki was always hanging out with his students lile during breaks and shit (felt most strongly when they get scolded for breaking a window while playimg baseball) and i reason well hes the main character of course hes hanging out with the principal cast and i would have been fine with that.

But no not only does tanaka-sensei provide a in character reason (haru had a terrible school life) they come at me with 'haruaki is jealous of people friends' and what i think is really interesting about that initial chapter is that typically it would end with an 'oohhh but they ARE you're friends' but no it ends with 'even if you didn't make friends as a child you can still make adult friends' with miki and izuna becoming his friends.

This is echoed in the arc where haruaki is a student WITH sano and with his students and he has so much fun but finally he says 'im not your friend im your teacher' the relationships you have with your teachers and adults and vice versa in your life arent without value but theyre not the same as ones you make with your peers and should not be treated as such

Haruaki’s intelligence

I love that despite how severely pathetic and cowardly (affectionate) Haruaki is, he is by no means stupid or an idiot. On the contrary, he’s really fricking intelligent. However, what’s the use of smarts when a good number of the times you are too wimpy to even think coherently.

But, once you take away that cowardice and emotionality factor of his, you realise how in canon scarily intelligent he is. And also very cunning.

[I say intelligent to point of scary because back when his souls separated into multiple parts, the soul that represented his intelligence quite literally planned on essentially killing/destroying the other parts of his soul and taking total control of the body. Because with those other parts he recognized he became weird and irrational]

This is one of the things that makes me SO interested about Haruaki’s previous life as Abe-no-Seimei. Because Seimei did not have that cowardice or those ‘irrational desires’ that Haruaki does in his current life. So given the way we know how deviously cunning Haruaki’s is capable of being (+ what we have already seen of Seimei’s smarts), and just in general how very shady Seimei is portrayed to be, I am quite curious as to what type of person he actually was

Anyways, Haruaki is my bbg and no part of him ever does any wrong (even the shenanigans his intelligence was up to during the trip to Kyoto) 🫶

it has been bugging me since a long time already, does the term "yokai" can really be translated as "ghoul"?

This is also one of those things I’ve thought about long and hard and really want to hear answers to

working backwards from “a terrified teacher at ghoul school” to “youkai gakkou no sensei hajimemashita”, it sort of makes sense, in the way that “ghoul” rhymes with “school”, “ghoul” matches “terrified”, and “terrified” and “teacher” alliterate. And then without “terrified” (even though its not in the original title) it sounds kind of empty and bland. So it’s trying to be a snappy title rather than a 100% accurate translation of the original

“Ghoul”, while vague as hell like every other english word for monsters, does seem to have to mean “something that eats human flesh” so it just doesn't equate to “youkai” at all (in fact “monster” is probably closer in that its also an all encompassing word and occupies the same cultural space in english as “youkai” does in japanese)

I wish so badly to hear why and how the official translator (Amanda Haley) ended up going with the TTGS title, and also her thoughts on translating it in general, which is probably never going to happen bc she also translates way higher profile stuff like CSM, and she also isn’t on social media at all

I dug up an old podcast the other day featuring her from 2017 (right before eng vol 1 released) where she mentioned yohaji for a minute or two. (starts around minute 24) No earthshattering translation insights, but she does mention having to read up on youkai stuff and having trouble translating jokes (thank god its not just me)

On that note, I’m also curious if tanamai sensei had other titles in mind or youkai gakkou was the first and only one (almost certainly not) It’s just very different from her previous titles which were all very…. concepty??

Now that we officially have confirmation that A Terrified Teacher At Ghoul School is getting an anime adaptation next year, I am quite curious as what the artstyle in the anime will look like 🤔 The art style at the start of the manga looks noticeably different than how it is rn so I’m curious as to what direction they’ll go in 🤧

To be honest, I quite like both, so which ever they go with I’ll be happy, just as long as it doesn’t look wonky

i became very desperate for yohaji content after consuming it all so i went on a hunt for the jp fandom after unearthing the mikiharu hiragana ver. heres a list for those who want it:
