This rec list is for my sister, who in a few short weeks days will have a tiny human keeping her up all hours of the night and asked me for "something to read, God knows I will have time for something long"

Honestly, the only thing these fics have in common are their length. I don't know about your definition of a long fic, (in my mind it's usually 90k+) but I included 70k+ here, simply because there were some great fics I wanted to included for my sister lol

A former lawyer, turned high school councilor who works at the prestigious private school that he, himself, was expelled from. Rey is an adorable art teacher who is everything he despises and who does not take his shit. They clash to say the least. He hates her. Then he wants to fuck her. Then he falls in love with her. If he plays his cards right he might get everything he never knew he wanted. | This might be the greatest enemies-to-lovers I have ever read! The prose is top notch, the characterization is fascinating, the slow transition from hate-to-attraction-to-love is so brilliantly done.

Interesting prose, great charcterization for Ben -- I can so relate to this version of him. A depth that you only see in a good long fic. Juicy and dramatic. AND ANGSTY 😘👌

The Trail Bride by SecretReyloTrash | @lyresandlasers | Explict | 160k | Complete | Western AU | Oregon Trail | Strangers to lovers | Marriage of convenience | secrets/lies | outlaws | angst | action/violence/drama | Rey POV | Rey Niima's husband dies on the Oregon Trail. She settles on marrying the mysterious Ben Solo to continue the journey. They might have come togther by chance but their chemistry and devotion are undeniable. But of course Ben has a past - he is not a respectable banker, but the outlaw Kylo Ren and Rey has gotten caught up in one of his schemes. After seemingly freeing him from the First Order Rey must seek out her own happiness -- even if that mean leaving her husband behind. | Its languid place allows for beautiful characterization and build up-- never slowing to point of distraction, peppering teases of future plot to keep you reading. After the "climax" it slows to a snail's pace but ends beautifully. Brilliantly written. Smut as hot as the surface of Venus.

This Mess Is Mine by LyricalRiot | Explicit | 211k | Complete | Modern AU | Friends-with-benefits to lovers | Accidental Pregnancy | Pregnancy/Childbirth | Pining | Fluff | Marriage | Friend group dynamic | HEA | reylo baby | Smut | Multi POV | Opps. Friends-with-benefits Ben and Rey make a quarentine baby! Fic follows conception to birth and the romantic journey of the parents as they get their shit togther and get their heads out of their asses and find their HEA. | Okay, this fic is set in an AU where the covid pandemic was WAY less of a big deal than it has been IRL, so there is only a bit of covid/quarantine/pandemic in the beginning. | Ahhhhhh! This is perfection! So well written with brilliant characterization! It's not overly dramatic or angsty but there is a realness in the details that makes it so compelling to read and so enjoyable!

Business With Pleasure by ishipstarwars: The one where businesswoman Rey Palpatine has a mighty need, and escort Kylo Ren aims to please.

A Study in Movement by violethoure666: Rey is a 21 year old dance major working as a stripper and Ben is the 30 something year old investment banker who keeps coming in for private dances but won't let Rey touch him. Ben's on the spectrum, Rey is a ball of energy and thirsty af. Neither one knows what to do with the other but can't seem to let it go.

Almost Perfect by LadyReylo: After recovering from a life threatening brain tumour, Ben has lost his confidence in sex and relationships. So he gets in touch with Rey, a specialised sex worker, to help him get over his anxieties. Rey has always had to fight to survive and is still struggling to get by. Writer's Round Up: 2021

Tagged by @pikapeppa, thank you! 💕

I'll tag @dreadfutures, @about2dance, @natsora, @a11sha11fade, @beaubashley, @espressocomfort, @rosebud1773, @rosella-writes and @whataboutbugs-art. No pressure!

Words written: 420,871

Caveat: this is how many I've posted, I've written way more but I ain't doing that math right now. I only went as far as calculating how many words carried over from 2020 and subtracted them from my statistical total. So this includes the tail ends of Twist, The Cutting Room Floor, A Wolf Named Vengeance and Just Like Fire, but not the wordcount of each from last year.

(This got...extensive. Have a cut.)

New Things I Tried: Deliberate epic-ness. I set out to write What a Wicked Game to Play as fully fleshed out as possible. Twist being over 150K words was kinda accidental. I'm curious to see just how long I can string WG out without losing the plot entirely.

Fic I Spent the Most Time On: WG, for sure. I started it initially in January, put it down for a couple months, had Imogen spring fully formed from my head like a thunderbolt, then by April I had started writing it again and I'm still working on it now. No end in sight.

Fic I Spent the Least Time On: Tossup between several oneshots that were all written, edited, beta'd and posted on the same day. The winner, however, is probably Could You Get Any Louder?, a tumblr prompt that I wrote in the ask box reply then polished up and posted to AO3 as well. Incidentally, this is also the last thing I wrote for Mass Effect, the rest of my work this year being for DA:I.

Favorite Thing I Wrote: *snorts in poly* I don't play favorites, but there are some standouts. WG, obviously. I love Imogen with my whole heart and soul. But also: Hope Is a Fragile Thing, where I successfully wrote the whole fic before posting a single word of it. No More My Heart Beats Without You, an attempt to write something heartshatteringly tragic. And Of Ruins and Restoration, a surprise that slid in and out of my head just three days ago. It has promise to turn into a whole new fic (and pairing) for me.

Favorite Thing I Read: Again, favorites aren't a thing with me. But if we go by fics I binged to catch up on, followed from the start or went back to time and again, I have a list.

Indavisable, by Elvesinmyheart, Pikapeppa. The Ancient Elvhen Boyband and the fantastic women who love them. With art, both in and of the fic. *chef's kiss*

Dead Pasts and Dread Futures, by youworeblue. I was scared of it at first. A fix-it/do over that starts with death isn't usually my cup of tea. I have never been more wrong. This fic led me to a new friendship, joining a new discord server and ultimately becoming a better writer myself.

Coiling Time, by Enceladus(EspressoComfort). TTMCIT, that's Time Traveling Modern Character In Thedas. The concept hooked me from the start, the writing kept me coming back for more.

Sunday, Domestic, by JessaLRynn. (This one is locked, so you have to be signed in to AO3 to see it) Did you know that I have a soft spot for the Ninth Doctor? Well, you do now. The characterization of him and Rose is so good in this I think I've read it nearly a dozen times.

I'll Still Destroy You, by Yours_Truly_Commander_Shepard. It's dark, it's tragic, it's powerful. I've read it and reread it more than I should admit to. Sometimes you just need words that hurt your heart.

The Taming of Fen'Harel, by beaubashley. And sometimes you just need a feel-good, happy ending road trip with your favorite eldritch trickster god. Even if (when?) he's an idiot.

Probably goes without saying that these are all rated E, because I am shameless about loving smutty fics.

Writing Goals For Next Year: Keep going on WG. Write the rest of R&R and a couple other WIP's I have stashed on the back burner. Hopefully get to have my shot at being my bestie's beta.

Hmmm. I mean, in stories which have romance, I tend to regard the romance as fairly integral, and plot it out as part of the story, since it governs motivation, which is a chief driver of plot. If the question is, do I like writing stories of which romance is a part, the answer is hell yes, 9/10 at minimum.

#4 - What's the plot bunny you've been carrying longest? Do you wonder why you haven't written it yet?

I don't think I have any plot bunnies I haven't written, but I have lots I haven't finished. The ones I feel greatest existential dread over are original works, but the fanfic one I haven't got complete enough to publish is an omegaverse Reylo fic where they're both betas but they're trying to pass themselves off as an alpha and an omega for career reasons. I like this partly for the opportunities to torture them with the false assumption that they will disappoint the other if the truth comes out, and partly for the chance to deal with the way omegaverse fic often engages with the idea of betas as inherently dull or lesser.

#8 - What's your relationship with constructive criticism?

There are people from whom I will accept it and people from whom I won't. If someone is a stranger to me, or if their work or taste doesn't display interest in the kind of things I'm trying to work with (e.g., if they write or endorse exclusively three-act living room dramas while I'm doing contrapuntal hyper-anachronistic drama or whatever the fucking trip I'm on this year), I'm generally not going to be super-interested in their criticism of my work. I have a dramaturg that I work with as a playwright, and I trust that she knows me and gets what I'm going for and will tell me frankly if I'm not doing what I'm trying to do, or doing it badly. In fanfic I work with Bombastique a lot; frequently she is too nice to me but usually I feel I can rely on her to tell me if something is seriously wrong or if my intentions aren't coming through. There are lots of other people I can and will accept it from, though I don't always agree. It's a complicated question, but it comes down to trust, I think.

#19 - What are some books or authors that have influenced your style the most?

Oof, pal, I don't know. I typed up a long list of authors I love and then deleted it, because all I could imagine was someone staring incredulously at my prose and being like... "you want to blame them for this?"

#25 - What's your revision or rewriting process like?

Hack and debug? It varies a lot, honestly. I am lazy, so I often bring a lot over from previous drafts.

If you've read my stuff you may recognize cross-cultural and multilingual communication and miscommunication, environmental disaster, intergenerational harm, and the question of how crimes can ever be paid for as shit I simply. I was tagged to wrap my year up by @noire-pandora and @kittynomsdeplume who are both my wives now.

I don't make the Tumblr rules, it just is what it is.

Like last year I’ll only be using works posted on AO3, not things written which have not been posted.

Long Fic:

Listen Closely probably. It had more words than anything else. I spent a long time agonizing over Wolfhunt too >.<

Short Fic:

I'd say Crowns of Violets and Roses. It's explicit femslash, which I have very little experience in, and it's two characters that I haven't written a lot so their voices were a little difficult to locate for me.

I don't even know where this shit is going. It just flows.

Things I want to work on in 2022:

Writing every day again. In 2020 I feel like I did write every day, even in the first half of 2021 I did, but at some point that fell away. I need to remind myself it's okay to be working on a few different things at the same time rather than beating my head over the same fic until it's done as this often leads to me not writing for a few days.

I need to finish fucking SOMETHING. Wolfhunt is a mess and I need to get it together, IDA is only going to be like 6 chapters I just need to do it, and Listen Closely is outlined gawdammit I just need to write the words down!

Still got the to do list as well (although I made some progress on it this year)

In Conclusion

2021 was pretty shit, am I right?

I'm doing okay, I mean, generally. I have a lot of things I need to work on in my personal life to get back to being my best self and I really think pushing myself in my writing is a big piece of that because it really does bring me a lot of joy. These days you got to latch onto those things and keep them close.

I can't express enough to my Tumblr and Discord friends how much they mean to me and how much they've gotten me through the last couple of years. It's easy, in my current situation, to feel very isolated and alone (because realistically I am) but these people and communities have helped remind me that I have friends, I have people, and just because I can't pop down the street and see their faces doesn't make them any less meaningful or real.

So like, thanks for being there, wherever you are.

i was asked to make some fic recs of stuff i’ve been reading since tros dropped but since tumblr has a glitch where i can’t add a “read more” cut in asks, i decided to make it a separate post because i have a LOT. all of them are rated E except for like, three lmao and they’re mostly modern au ones with some fix-its thrown in. i’ll put two of my favorites outside of a cut and the rest after it.

(won’t you let me) walk you home from school by somethingdifferent modern au. ongoing. ben and rey are co-workers at a private school. rey as a elementary school art teacher is SO CUTE. her and ben have a slow burn enemies to lovers situation going on and god, what can i say about this fic. one of THE BEST reylo fics i’ve ever read. incredibly in character. you know those fics that are so enthralling that they draw you in and you realize like 3 hours later that you’ve read the whole thing? this fic is one of those stories. it reels you in. and REY. i hate fics that are like, “she’s so plain and mousy and ordinary and lanky” like, NO. i love that this author characterizes her as the vibrant, sweet, radiant person she is. and ben’s deadpan humor in this is amazing. he’s got it so bad for rey but he’s such a self-sabotaging goof. just, god. i can’t stress enough how amazing of a fic this is. a must read. and if you love what we do in the shadows, read somethingdifferent’s cracky wwdits x reylo crossover oneshot - it’s hilarious

a place to go by delia-pavorum (literaryminded) modern au. bit of a slow burn. ben and rey are strangers and accidentally both end up at luke’s cabin during xmas vacation because luke, a fellow teacher at rey’s school lends it to her for the holiday and a certain grumpy tol nephew of his happens to drop by thinking it’s vacant. they get snowed in. [in bill hader’s stefan voice] this fic has everything: bed sharing, an enemies-to lovers dynamic, slow dancing to frank sinatra, snark, british!rey and ben finding her accent adorable, ben reading jane austen to a sick rey, smut, and fluff. another one of the best reylo fics i’ve ever read in the past 5 years i’ve been a shipper. it’s so well written and it made me cry with how moved i was by it. i stayed up all night reading all 8 chapters it was that good.

the man, the stallion, and the wind by voicedimplosives modern au. i love this fic so, so, so much. rey picks up a hitchhiking ben and they have to hang out in her trailer while the winter storm calms down. so fluffy and smutty i love it so much. their characterizations are perfect. definitely a fic that i’m gonna come back to read over and over again.

between two lives by neonheartbeat modern au. rey’s a model and her car breaks down in the middle of nowhere and she stays with mechanic ben solo while her car gets worked on. SUCH a good fic. the build up to their relationship is *chefs kiss* and the smuttttt. amazing. and i was not prepared for all the feels.

carve your name upon my heart by TourmalineGreen modern au and 3 chapters. one of the most unique fics i’ve ever read. it actually got me really emotional and i like, hardly ever cry reading fics. rey’s an artist that creates a sculpture (ben) that comes to life. such a beautiful fic, i absolutely adore it.

big dick problems by TourmalineGreen modern au. rey and ben are co-workers at a book store and ben being a kind of aloof person, rey thinks he hates her (she’s wrong ofc asdklfjsd). anyway one day at work she sees that he was browsing the r/bigdickproblems subreddit on his phone aaaand i won’t say more. seriously, go read this. it’s SUCH a good fic, ben & rey are so in character and it’s a good plot.. it’s one of those fics that i’m definitely gonna come back to re-read a bunch of times.

rebel side of heaven by jeeno2 modern au. ben and rey are friends, but i guess they’re more so acquaintances in the same friend group. ben’s a virgin and rey offers to teach him about sex but unbeknownst to her, ben’s got a massive crush on her 😏

tattooed heart by KyloTrashForever modern au. one of the best modern au fics i’ve ever read. i stayed up all night reading it, it was soooo good. just. the smut, the fluff. i can’t recommend it enough. the description: “ Rey Johnson has found herself down on her luck lately. A week long vacation to Hawaii for her best friend’s destination wedding should be just the thing she needs, only her day has been hell. Hell, her year has been hell. When the hot bartender with that fucking mouth makes her an enticing proposition, she finds herself unable to refuse. Besides, it isn’t as if she’ll ever see him again...”

sealed to me by glittergothh canonverse and takes place after tlj. this could serve as a tros fix it tbh because it’s like it’s own movie. i love the plot and ben & rey are so in character. the knights of ren actually play an integral part in this. love the finn/ben interactions.

love like ghosts by Yours_Truly_Commander_Shepard canonverse. my favorite tros fix-it fic so far. features the world between worlds, ezra, ahsoka, and anakin. rey goes back in time to save ben. and the scene where rey visits ben on mustafar 👀🔥 LORD. i LOVE this so much and it was just what i needed to read after the train wreck that was tros.

I've Got You, Babe by crossingwinter modern au. oneshot. a REALLY cute t-rated fic about ben taking care of rey after she gets the flu :’)

charcoal and petals by Hormonal_Trashbag modern au. a really sweet tattoo artist/flower shop worker fic that i really enjoyed! i’m a sucker for this trope because of abigeyedowl’s gorgeous tattoo-artist!ben and florist!rey art tbh

9 Pints by tigbit modern au. ben’s a vampire. oh my god this fic is amazing. it’s still ongoing but some of the best smut i’ve EVER read. a bit of a slow burn but man. it’s so good.

miles from where you are by Mooncactus modern au. i hardly EVER read anything under M but this has to be one of THE best reylo fics i’ve ever read. their characterizations, the slow burn, oh my god. it’s SO good and funny and fluffy. enemies to lovers perfection. the description: “After an argument over Star Wars fandom with a "gatekeeping, entitled monster" with the cryptic username of KyloRen, Rey finds herself stuck in a series of unavoidable video calls.”

saving mr. wanks by LovesBitca8 modern au. oneshot. rey catches ben in the act of uh, wanking off in the men’s restroom lmfaooo. it’s rare when a fic actually makes me like cry of laughter and this fic was hilarious. and the SMUT oh my god. so good.

auld lang syne by KyloTrashForever modern au. oneshot. ben and rey are roommates. ben keeps getting text messages from an unknown number with uh, explicit pictures and he eventually accuses rey of sending them to him ASLKDFJSD. i won’t say more because i don’t wanna spoil it but i love this fic sm.

bliss, balance and birth by crossingwinter canonverse. oneshot. ben teaches their daughter how to read. this is SO cute and just what i needed to read after tros.

gorgeous by Ever-so-reylo (Ever_So_Reylo) modern au. ben and rey are co-workers and they end up having to go on a company retreat. enemies to lovers perfection

caught in the headlights by jeeno2 modern au. twoshot. “Rey Johnson forgets to wear a bra to work. Fortunately, nobody notices. (Except for Ben Solo.)” 😏

transference by fear_of_being_bitten modern au. ongoing. rey is ben’s psychologist so this is definitely a taboo fic but GOD the tension between them is like no other fic i’ve read. ben’s an asshole with this air of bravado about him because he’s trying to cover up his insecurities and rey is having none of his shit no matter how much he tries to push her buttons. it’s so well written and another one of the best reylo fics i’ve read. i’m so eager for each update to the fic. here’s an excerpt:

“So you enjoy controlling powerful women,” Rey repeats, making her voice sound uninterested. She takes notes, although it’s unlikely she’ll forget a word of what he’s saying. It gives her an excuse to look away from him.

“I do. But it’s not the taking of the control that I like. I’m big enough that I can take whatever I want.”

I just finished reading Hanging On A Star by Yours_Truly_Commander_Shepard

And holy shit

You guys, it was so good!

Angsty and delicious with a HEA and engaging prose that I had to finished it that night.

It says it's a 'A Star is Born AU' and while I haven't seen any of the movies, I did check out the plot and honestly I dont see too many similarities except the basic concept of Washed-up Famous Older Male Musician meets Young Female Up-and-comming Musician.

Here are the details below- if you like musicians and breakups I highly reccomend it!

And the smut was insanely delicious 🤤

Welcome to the 2020 Reylo Fanfiction Anthology: To Rapture the Earth and the Seas

Dear writers,

We’re so excited to have all of you as part of this year’s Anthology, To Rapture the Earth and the Seas! Please note that while we post on various social media platforms with updates, we use email for all communication and our emails will have information not found in our social posting. If you didn’t receive an email from us, please let us know!

The next step for the project is submitting outlines. For the outlines, we look for everyone to have a clear idea of where their piece will go and for a clear link to the natural element for which you signed up. Each fic’s focus should be the relationship between Rey and Kylo/Ben, and it must be something that can be completed in the given time and word limits. Information about how to submit will be in your email inboxes, and please submit your outlines by April 7th through Google Docs. We’ll reply to you to let you know we’ve read your outline as soon as we can!
