Yuya Florence
Tumblr media
A magicless human from other world seemingly with no memories or perhaps locked memories. With only a driver license and journal that gives them some identity .Now in this new place Yuya is just trying to survive what NRC throws at them hoping to recover what they lost.
Twst- The shooting star over the castle in the beginning of movies
Personality
Kinda complicated to explain but Yuya honestly doesn’t have a consistent personality in the main story because they change to how to protect themselves or what the situation needs/happening around them it’s in the way of her trying to survive and does it subconsciously . Out of main story when there isn’t a crisis and can somewhat relax Yuya is kinda childish, sassy at times, blunt , more on the quiet side,Petty, chaotic asking the most random questions, intrusive thoughts are likely to win but is deeply hurting on the inside.
Basic info

-Pet peeve : Forgetting things
-Favorite subject: Alchemy
-club : hopes between clubs mostly at board game club
-Talent: lock picking, Cooking, Dodging
More info
- Has a bit of an obsession photography because they represent memories and Yuya doesn’t want to and scared to forget again
-Got called a beast tamer and ran with it, can make friends or form some kind of bond with all kinds of creatures, Ghosts etc.
-Yuya sleep walks and it gets worse over time
- trying to keep it together
- Will fight like her life depends on it even outside the overblots
-Yuya was really in denial of being in other world up until the end of book 2. Getting a scar from Leona’s OB was how it really settled in for Yuya that Twisted wonderland was not a dream. Before that his thinking was “I don’t belong here so surely someday I wake up and I’ll be back where I belong “ was how they were trying to rationalize being in an another world.(Didn’t get any scars from Riddle tho)
-Yuya is insecure about the scars they get not even like to look in the mirror
- After OB will get a dream of the full movie. Will have dreams about people outside of the OB like the staff members and will get full context after 3 dreams.
- Yuya doesn’t really good out of his way to talk to people most times it was others who introduce/ be introduced but if Yuya ran into someone they’ll still introduce themselves to be respectful.
- Took a bit for Yuya to warm up going out to talk to others (Ace, Deuce and Grim are bit of the exception given how they’re always around each other tho Yuya was mostly quiet in the beginning)
-Gave up on hope of ever being able to get home after book 4 and focus on trying to get their memories back
- Doesn’t ask for help for themselves but to help others or if Grim asks them to like in book 4
- got a staff weapon after book 2
-Starts to tired being the Perfect and having to help others is all they’re worth and scared to know what happens if they stop helping others,” will I be forced to leave Ramshackle is the only home I know”
- Skips a lot of orientation/assembly stuff. Some tried to scold Yuya “ Your the ramshackle perfect you need to set an example” along those lines but Yuya would just ignore it or respond “ Since when has anyone respected me as a Dorm leader”(Yuya doesn’t like the memory of orientation )
-Human arm rests taller or shorter doesn’t matter (Floyd,Leona,Cater,Ace are the main perpetrators)
-“Where did you get that!?!?” “…don’t worry about it”

Backstory
Yuya after their mother passed got sent to live with her Aunt family. It was basically to make them look good and all must make it look like they were the perfect family.
Yuya didn’t really get to be their own person but the mold his aunt and uncle wanted which ties into why he doesn’t have a consistent personality

Journal 6 Feb - ChatGPT and Me:
Different directions in Prompting
The current I Ching project is to create images from the sayings in the I Ching which are not always subject specific. That is having direct nouns which can more easily lead to image creations. The goal is to see what Midjourney creates.
A similar basic prompt sent to Midjourney Prompter by Yuya Kikuchi, a ChapterGPT tool, create prompts which a more descriptive and include more subject detail. This does direct Midjourney.
Compare :
Original Prompt : Create an oil painting in the style of the Renaissance, of Beneficial to act in major undertakings. focusing on rich, deep colors and detailed textures. The composition should feature dramatic contrasts of light and shadow, with a sense of depth and three-dimensionality. –iw 0.5 –ar 3:2 –v 6
Titian is not mentioned directly but reference using styles applicable to him.
Tumblr media
ChatCPT My request : An oil painting of Beneficial to act in major undertakings in the style of Titian. Titian is mention directly to see what style prompts ChatGPT creates Midjourney Prompter : "Capture an oil painting that embodies the theme 'Beneficial to act in major undertakings', styled after the Renaissance master Titian. Focus on the dramatic use of light and shadow, typical of Titian's work, to highlight the significance and impact of decisive actions in critical moments. Incorporate rich, deep colors and detailed expressions to convey the weight of decisions and their beneficial outcomes. Frame the subjects using the golden ratio for a balanced and harmonious composition, emphasizing the depth and emotional intensity of the scene. --ar 3:2 --v 6.0
Tumblr media
The ChatGPT with more direction and more mentions of Titian in the prompt does give a more Titian style prompt. However the original prompt creates a useful image which equally reflects the prompt without an overwhelming artist style.
It depends on the artist's direction

The discovery is a step towards scientists being better able to use particles to study hidden or elusive phenomena in the universe, rather than having to rely on light seen by telescopes. Neutrinos are subatomic particles that have been compared to "ghosts slipping through the night," because they're so insubstantial and seem to barely interact with the rest of the physical world. The Earth is constantly being bombarded by neutrinos, but most originate in the sun or in the atmosphere. An artist's composition of the Milky Way's interior, with neutrino emissions in blue. They've known that some are coming from outside our galaxy, and they figured that some must come from the Milky Way, too. IceCube has been hunting for those. "It was accepted that there would be neutrinos coming from our galaxy, but we didn't have any evidence until now," says Ignacio Taboada, a professor of physics at the Georgia Institute of Technology and IceCube's spokesperson. The IceCube team says in the journal Science that it's used machine-learning techniques to sort through ten years of data, revealing neutrinos emanating from the inner parts of the Milky Way. But it's not yet clear whether the neutrinos are coming from a collection of specific sources or if it's a more diffuse kind of emission. "It's probably a combination of both," Taboada says. One of the most exciting things about this discovery is the possibilities it opens up for learning more about the origins of cosmic rays, he says. Cosmic rays are subatomic particles that travel through the universe at almost the speed of light, and although they have been studied for over a century, much about them remains mysterious. 5 Underrated Video Games
1. Night in the Woods
Tumblr media
Margaret "Mae" Borowski is a 20-year-old college dropout, who relocates back to her hometown of Possum Springs, which has been struck by the closure of the coal mines and the stagnating economy. She meets up with her old friends, including gloomy but intelligent Beatrice "Bea" Santello, hyperactive delinquent Greggory "Gregg" Lee, and Gregg's quiet, modest boyfriend Angus Delaney. Mae also learns that another one of her old friends, Casey Hartley, has mysteriously disappeared.
Mae spends several days exploring Possum Springs and spending time with her friends, but she also begins to have strange and vivid dreams. At the town's Halloween festival, Mae witnesses a teenager being kidnapped by a mysterious figure. The four friends begin working together to figure out what is going on, with Mae's mental health slowly deteriorating with every one of her dreams. After intensive searching, the four stumble across a strange group of cloaked figures in the woods, who chase after them; Mae ends up falling and lapses into a coma.
Mae eventually wakes up and returns to her friends, and she reveals that the reason she dropped out was due to her increasing dissociation from people and the world (it is implied that Mae suffers from some sort of depersonalization disorder), seeing everything as merely shapes. Mae's journal, in which she draws pictures for each major event in the game, was given to her by a doctor to write down her emotions after she bludgeoned a student with a softball bat six years ago as a result of a dissociative episode. Due to this incident, the townsfolk became wary of Mae and caused a financial and emotional strain in her family. As her dissociation worsened at college, Mae mustered up the strength to leave and return home, hoping that being back in Possum Springs would help her return to normal.
Still wounded, Mae decides to venture out into the woods alone to find the group who chased her and the others, only for Gregg, Bea, and Angus to refuse to let her go by herself. The group enter the old mines and meet the mysterious group, who are revealed to be a cult. The cult turns out to be behind the kidnappings of several residents, including Casey, taking those whom they deem useless to society and whom they say will "not be missed" into the mines to sacrifice them to a god-like chthonic entity called the Black Goat in hope that the Black Goat will revitalize the economy of Possum Springs. The cult's leader allows the group to leave, threatening them never to tell anyone about the cult – however while riding up the mine's elevator, a member of the group attempts to kill Mae. The others manage to save her and the elevator falls, collapsing the mine and presumably trapping the cult underground.
Depending on who the player interacted with the most throughout the course of the game, Mae will sit down with either Bea or Gregg and talk about the events of the previous night, and all the things that have happened in Possum Springs. The others join them shortly after, and Mae tells them that although they will all be forced to grow and adapt to life as it goes on for better and for worse, they can still enjoy their time together now. The game ends as the four decide to forget about their problems for the time being and have band practice.

2. Among the Sleep
Tumblr media
Among the Sleep is a first-person exploration game seen from the view of a toddler. The player can move the cursor to walk or crawl around, the latter of which is faster and is required to slide through obstacles blocking the way. Running is also an available option, though the player will fall down if it is done for too long. The player can interact with and push objects, and open doors and windows. Sometimes, the handle to open doors is too tall to reach for the player, in which case the player will have to push and climb chairs for additional height. Other than chairs, the player can climb boxes, tables, and various things to reach otherwise unreachable ledges and heights. Certain objects can also be held as well as thrown away. Others can be stored to the inventory and taken out again for later use.
For most of the game, the player is accompanied by a sentient teddy bear named Teddy, a birthday present from the toddler's father. The player can hug Teddy, who emits light that helps the player navigate through darker environments. The light will wear down after a while, but will recharge if left unused. If the player drops Teddy, which always happens whenever they arrive from sliding through pipes to a new level or environment, they will have to pick it up first before advancing again.
Throughout the game, the player is followed by two monsters: a feminine figure that haunts the first three levels, and a trench coat-wearing figure that haunts the final level. The monsters' appearance is indicated by the blurring of the vision, grating sounds, and in the case of the feminine figure, a slow lullaby (Trollmors Vuggesang), "Trollmother's Lullaby") hummed about. There is no way to fend off the monsters; if they appear, the player will have to run away or hide under tables or chairs until they go away. If the player is not quick enough to evade the monsters, a short cinematic will show the monsters taking hold of the player, which results in a game over, followed by a continue screen with a pacifier. Clicking the pacifier restarts the game from the last checkpoint. The player can also get a game over by other means, such as falling into water or chasms.
The game is largely linear and involves going from point A to B, though the expansive environment with multiple obstacles may induce the feeling of being lost. After some time exploring the player's house, the player is taken to a dreamlike location with a gingerbread house-like hut that serves as a sort of hub level. The house contains a circular door that leads to a new level, surrounded by four containers where "memories" obtained from each level are stored. After the player finds a memory and heads to a tube at the end of the level, they will be returned to this hut. Once four memories are stored, the player can insert Teddy's right hand below the circular door to return to the player's house.
In the extra DLC level, instead of exploring dreamlike locations, the player is taken to another house with the objective of finding and thawing five frozen dolls by playing music or turning on the TV. The gameplay is still the same, with the feminine figure haunting the player, but the player is also confronted by a fireplace monster in the underground section that advances and closes in through an aisle.

3. Rule of Rose
Tumblr media
Described as "essentially an interactive movie" by its director Shuji Ishikawa and associate producer Yuya Takayama, the narrative of Rule of Rose centers on the traumatic childhood memories of Jennifer, "an ordinary, vulnerable girl"; these memories sometimes manifest in exaggerated ways. Set in England, the game opens in 1930, as 19-year-old Jennifer is led to an abandoned orphanage by a boy. She follows him to a grave in the courtyard, where she digs up a coffin with a bloody sack inside it. Four children sneak up on her and pour water on her, before shoving her into the coffin. She awakens in a largely abandoned airship in flight to an unknown destination, ruled by a cruel group of young girls known as the Red Crayon Aristocrats, despite the presence of adults on board. Under the threat of death, Jennifer must appease the Aristocrats by bringing an offering for them each month. Assisting her is Brown, a dog she frees from confinement in the airship, and the chronically sickly Wendy, who is the only child to be friendly to her.
Jennifer eventually regains her memories of being cared for by the farmer Gregory Wilson, after she was orphaned in an unrelated airship crash. There, he was kind to her, though he confused her with his dead son Joshua, kept her prisoner, and periodically slid into melancholy alcoholism. Discovering her one day, Wendy began to exchange letters with Jennifer and eventually convinced her to escape, but not before Wendy stole his gun. The two then renewed their oath of "everlasting, true love," with Jennifer's stuffed bear exchanged for Wendy's brooch. Back on the airship, Jennifer ascends to becoming part of the Red Crayon Aristocrats, after retrieving the stuffed bear for the Princess of the Red Rose, the co-leader of the Aristocrats.
The game's setting then transitions to the now-inhabited orphanage. Bullied by the children, Jennifer is horrified to find that she has become the offering of the month; meeting up with Wendy in the courtyard, she loses Brown and later finds his corpse in the Aristocrats' meeting room, where he had been killed in her place. Wendy then reveals herself as the Princess of the Red Rose. Jennifer, now a child, slaps her and casts aside her brooch, hating the Aristocrats and herself for being too cowardly to oppose them. Afterward, the Aristocrats approach Jennifer, now an adult, in the hopes that she will replace Wendy as their leader, whom they have deposed. Wendy, however, retaliates against the children by mentally conditioning Gregory into assuming the persona of "Stray Dog," a dangerous creature she had invented to assume power over the other children. She then brings Gregory, as Stray Dog, to kill everyone in the orphanage. Only Jennifer escapes the onslaught. Before being killed off-screen, Wendy, now remorseful, confesses her role in it, which had been sparked by her jealousy over Brown. She then gives Jennifer Gregory's gun. Gregory then returns to kill Jennifer, and in a moment of lucidity, he asks "Joshua" to give him back the gun, which Jennifer does. He then kills himself.
Rule of Rose concludes with Jennifer, as a child, waking in the large empty orphanage and reflecting on the events and characters. Jennifer vows to remember the other children, especially because the media coverage of the children's deaths had diminished after it came to light that Jennifer had been the survivor of two horrific events, and meets with Wendy and Gregory. In the final scene, Jennifer visits Brown, now a puppy, in the shed and puts a collar on him. She completes a Bucket Knight nearby, symbolizing that she can always remember and return to her memories of Brown. Promising to protect him for eternity, she then closes the door on him.

4. Tattletail
Tumblr media
The game takes place in 1998 over the course of 5 nights, beginning on December 20th and ending on Christmas Day. The player wakes up on Night 1 to open their Christmas present early. The present is the new fad toy, a purple Baby Talking Tattletail (based on a Furby). After playing with the toy briefly (which involves feeding and grooming it), the player puts it back into its box and goes back to bed.
On Night 2, the player finds the same Tattletail in the tumble dryer, with no indication of how it got there. The player then charges it, wraps it back up into its box and goes back to bed.
On Night 3, the player encounters the contents of an old nursery in the basement. In the corner sits the now-recalled Mama Tattletail, along with a cassette tape which can be played using the toy. The tape contains a snippet from a story in a read-along style - including prompts to "turn the page" - about how "the children thought that Mama would never find them as long as she couldn't see them" but Mama would find them nevertheless. The player returns upstairs to find that Tattletail has made a mess. Tattletail asks to be taken to “Mama”. The player returns to the spot to find that Mama has disappeared. Mama Tattletail then starts to hunt down the player when they try to clean up after Tattletail.
On Night 4, after a lengthy hide-and-seek session with another Tattletail, the player finds a VHS tape that shows several interchangeable camera feeds from what seems to be a Tattletail commercial (which is actually footage from the trailer). After some time, some of the camera feeds' names turn red, the lighting changes from blue to green and trash bags and obscured parts of inanimate or writhing human bodies appear.
On Christmas Eve, Baby Talking Tattletail invites the player to the basement to join a "party" with a yellow and blue Baby Talking Tattletail, with two more that the player must fetch. After the player gets them, they must pick up their own Tattletail and get some supplies from upstairs. The player then finds out that the Talking Tattletails have made a pentagram out of the Christmas lights with the VHS tape in the middle, and have begun chanting in a seance. After rewinding the VHS tape, Mama appears and steals the candles and the player must find them in vases scattered around the basement while avoiding being attacked by Mama. Once the seance reaches its climax, the tape begins to levitate and the player must destroy it. The seance then ends and the player goes back to bed.

5. Duck Season
Tumblr media
Summer 1988 and your mom has just rented the coolest new game for your Kingbit Entertainment System. As you play over the course of the day it becomes apparent something is different about this game than the other games you own. Duck Season is a throwback to the golden age of 1980's gaming and movies with a hint of horror in a Spielburgian universe. Re-live a slice of childhood as you transported to an eerily familiar memory and play out the dark story that unfolds over a single day/night as your imagination takes over.

The Freedom of Expression Ep 10 - Stir caused as Don Nomura uploads a photo of his father, Nomura Katsuya's corpse.
K: This is Dir en grey's Kaoru, starting another episode of The Freedom of Expression. Joe san, Tasai san, welcome.
J, T: Thank you *1
K: Can we have the topic for this episode, Joe.
J: Yes, 'Don Nomura uploads a photo of his father, Nomura Katsuya's corpse to Twitter. Twitter is on fire with calls to delete it.'
Well, the former baseball manager Nomura Katsuya died on the 11th of February, and the photo of his corpse...Well, we say its his son, but they are not related by blood right? Its Nomura's wife, Sachiko's son (*from a previous relationship*). Well, anyway, they are family right? He took a photo of the corpse (*at the funeral*) and uploaded it to social media. Many voices have been raised saying it looks scary or creepy, so 'please delete it'.  Well, how should we think about this? It was a theme which caught my interest.
T: In Japan, we don't generally do that, do we?
J: We don't. Even with the death of close relatives, we don't tend to take photos, do we?
T: Right, we don't take commemorative photos with everyone gathered.
J: No, we don't. I think we tend to give the deceased more of a solemn send off. But I have lived in America for a little while, I mean, not all American's are like this but, you could say for Christianity, they have quite individualistic funerals. Also, when they say goodbye, they sometimes kiss the corpse and so on. Thats normal, and some people even take photos, but the circumstances might change if someone were to upload a photo to social media for all to see. Kaoru, how do you feel about this?
K: Well, lots of people can see it, so maybe its ok to bothered about it...but i don't really mind.  I mean, its his relative, it might be different if it was a stranger...but he's not just some wierdo. Well..I have a feeling its....????*2
T: I've covered Noumra san while I was a sports journalist, and when I was shown this recent photo, in my heart I thought..hmm, his face looks nice, he looks at peace.
J: I see. Well, opinion is very divided on this, but another thought I had about this one photo is...For a while I was chief editor for the magazine Days Japan. Its a photo journalism magazine, and it quite often included war photos. And in that case, well, for war in the middle east etc, the bodies of people who had died were visible in them, so there was a lot of debate about whether or not we should run them. At that time, one line that we took was that, for example, we would not run photos of people who had died in natural disaters, but in relation to war, we thought we must think about why it happened, and that the bodies might hold a message in relation to that. Obviously, we avoided very grotesque photos, but we did run numerous photos of bodies for this reason. Another thing I also conversely thought is, well at this point I don't know if movies do this, but there is a documentary movie called, 'Utanohajimari', I went to see it recently and was quite surprised. At the beginning of the movie, there is a birth scene, and there was a message warning viewers about the scene, that it wouldn't be censored. It was written that you will be watching it uncensored. So I thought, oh ok, but at the same time, in relation to birth and death, the two biggest events in a persons life, the start and the end...in this country we can't quite express ourselves freely. Its essentially a culture of trying to hide these things...I vaguely thought about this. We can get whatever  information we need to live our lives from all sorts of places, and if we don't have that we are seen as falling behind. But, as humans we need to think about why we are here, why we die, where did we come from, where are we going...well, its getting a bit philosophical, but we are living in a comparatively blinkered fashion in this respect. If you upload a photo like this to social media in a country where this type of thing is always concealed, you don't know if they is gonna be a kind of allergic reaction to it. In music and the arts and stuff, there are themes of death, and other things that we should be thinking about, but I think community in this country is missing these expressions....I mean, this photo is not intended  as a work of art, is it, Nomura san's body? Ive kinda thought about that.
K: I thought so too, you don't see it often do you? There was that...???*3
J: Ah, yes yes
K: There was a lot in that. Compared to that, this is..
J: Well, its true, in this country birth and death aren't exactly 'taboo', but we deal with it....Well, we are not a particularly religious country, so maybe that has something to do with it.
Kami: As for me..
J: Oh, he's here.
Kami: I saw that photo, the photo of him wearing his uniform, and I was moved.
J: Oh he was moved.
Kami: Mmm, I though 'Ah, its Nomura san', and like, 'Oh, The Swallows (*baseball team) .
J: I see. Instead of Rakuten, right?
Kami: No instead of the Hawkes where he got a triple crown. Like, he was greater when he became a manager. Like with Yakult. He kind of raised those teams.
K: He was worldly.
T: If he'd been wearing Hanshin or Rakuten uniforms it would be a bit....right?
K: Yeah. He'd say, 'No, not those!'.
J: I really think so.
K: I think Nomu san had great power with Hanshin and Rakuten. Later Hoshino san also had a lot of success, but yeah, think Nomu san had great power.
J: He made them, right? The base for a winning team.
K: But of course, the Swallows...
J: Yeah, whatever you say, Nomu san was there, and raised Furuta. At that time, we didn't know how far the word 'ID baseball' would go.
T: Thats right.
J: I think its amazing how that penetrated the world.
Kami: Its amazing how he got a triple crown as a catcher. But he didn't really boast about that during his active years. People are thinking of the Swallows when they see him in uniform now right? Thats what i imagine anyway. He wasn't like 'Look at me!', he was more like one of the team. I feel it deeply, I feel the art.
J: Certainly I think it has that kind of message.  By the way, do you become a god after dying? How does it work? Are you born a god? I've always wanted to know this.
Kami: Gods?  Gods are there from the start.
J: Oh from the start? You are born a god?
Kami: No, we're not born, we just are.
J: Oh its like that?
T: Thats complex
J: I see, thats deep.
K: They already are, right?
J: Yeah
Kami: Gods don't have a beginning or an end.
K: Wow
J: Is that so?
K: I want to try saying that.
J: Right. ..He hasn't even proved once that he's real though.
K: But it means you must be around for billions of years.
Kami: Its not billions of years, im ever-lasting.
K: Oh, again.
J: Out it comes. He came out with that.
Kami: You guys just can't understand it.
K: No, we can't, not at all.
J: He always says it in a really cool voice too.
T: If i said that to my wife, she would laugh at me so much.
J: 'Im ever lasting too'.
*K laughs*
J: She'll usually say 'whats wrong with you?!'
This is really terrible. So, Kami, you don't die, you are not born?
Kami: Yeh, im timeless.
K: But you have an hourly wage, right?
*J laughs*
J: He has no concept of time but he works for an hourly wage!
Kami: Yes, thats right.
J: He's so stupid.
T: An incredible god.
J: I mean it. A god who needs money, like he needs to eat.
K: Its realistic right?
J: Yes, realistic.
K: He drops in just like that, doesn't he.
J: Im thankful for him...Well i have some sympathy for him, he's ever lasting, but he still has to eat, and earn a living. I don't know if im thankful or not thankful.
Kami: Thats why people call me a cheater.
T: He worries a lot about getting called a cheater.
K: We hear it a lot though.
T: Right, its hitting him where it hurts.
J: He says it everytime, I think if effects him a lot. But like Kami says..wearing a Yakult uniform...right?
K: Yeah
J: And his face looked really peaceful. I think perhaps, living in this country, we are a bit too indifferent towards birth and death.
K: There were probably quite a few young people who have never seen this kinda of thing before, so they won't be used to it if they are seeing it for the first time.
T: Its quite a complicated feeling coming into close contact with death or a dead body like that. When my relatives, or my grandma etc have died...I can't put that feeling into words, when you see them..what is that feeling. Do you have that experience, Joe?
J: Well, yes within my family, or friends. You can't put it into words...
T: Its a kind of lonliness, but not quite..and also a bit frightening. Its very difficult to express...the feeling when a person dies.
K: In those times, its like there is an atmosphere of trying not to say anything wierd. Like, there are certain set greetings like 'Im sorry for your loss'. There's this kind of pattern. I think that creates this kind of atmosphere.
J: Yeah, maybe.....I know a lot of people in bands, and when that type of person dies, thier funerals are quite individualistic..its kind of a relief to see. There are different ways to pay respects or connect with a death, and I think we ought to consider that more. I don't think its right to make death into a taboo.
T: Recently, Uchida Yuya san had a very 'rock' send off, didn't he?
J: Yes, he did! ...so I had these thoughts and picked up on this news.
K: Well, lets finish up here. Everyone please subscribe.
T, Kami: Please.
J: Thank you very much
*1 Im wondering what's the best way to translate 'よろしくお願いします/yoroshiku onegaishimasu'..
*2, 3 These bits frustrate me, as I can hear what he's saying, but i can't seem to figure out what he means. I feel like im missing something really obvious.

CARNIVAL DAY recaps [8/13]
Today’s recap: Ghostly investigations, the Ultra Evil Really Bad Guys in an awkward Mexican standoff with Slightly Less Bad Guys, and XX’s thoughts on writing.
--
FORTY-FIVE
14 Jun 1997 — 20 Jun 1997
CONTINENTAL DRIFT
--
The writer detective XX wrote a few stories (including the seppuku detective one) that would be put together in one book. The work would be published under the name “Seiryoin Ryusui” and—on Yasha’s request—called 19box in memory of Juku, whose DOLL nickname was Jukebox. [19box or Juke Box is an actual book by Seiryoin that indeed contains the seppuku detective story.]
On June 6th, Yuiga Dokuson fled JDC leaving a confession about being the Billion Killer. It’s now been three weeks since his escape and still no new confirmed Billion Killer cases have happened. The Crime Olympics still continue, but at least everyone knows they will be over in two months.
--
All stories influence people, for better or for worse, and the story with the biggest, sharpest impact is the news. Then again, even entertainment has a major impact on people. The pen is mightier than the sword; the story is the strongest weapon. [Insert a horrible pun about how kakuheiki, “written weapon”, is as strong as kakuheiki, “nuclear weapon”.]

(...when Hikimiya Yuuya had been working with the AI Desert Colosseum in February, he found an unbelievable secret file.
Below is Hikimiya Yuuya’s testimony. [Originally in first person.])
Once Hikimiya got out of shock upon seeing the different numbers of daily deaths, he instantly went to the hospital to talk with Frau D (or at least went there as fast as he could in a wheelchair). Frau D only told him to show the file to DOLL’s leader Madame Alpha to get answers.
Madame said she hadn’t seen this particular file before, but she had known all along that the UN numbers were faked. Good thing Hikimiya didn’t tell anyone else about it—if he did, he’d probably be disappeared on his way back to DOLL. He accidentally got mixed into a matter bigger than just the UN; a shadow organization was at play here, and one misspoken sentence could possibly doom the human race.
Madame then told Hikimiya what her Zero Reasoning actually was. The Japanese word for “zero”, rei, happens to sound exactly like the word for “soul”. Madame’s ability was seeing and talking to ghosts. The difficult part of her reasoning was discerning whether or not the ghosts were telling her the truth.
Other people would find it hard to believe, but Madame knew best that the souls who helped her solve cases were certainly real. She purposefully stayed away from other people, as anyone being too close to her for a long time would also start seeing ghosts, including those who had died in less than pretty manners. Several people even landed in the hospital from shock.
The ability wasn’t perfect. Madame would have a problem talking to souls who spoke different languages. The world of ghosts was also pretty complicated and consisted of more than just nice, well-behaved souls (but it’d take too long to explain everything now). Thanks to her powers, Madame knew better than anyone how drastically the known history changed throughout the ages, true events replaced with fake stories so different from what the souls told her about their times. She was also aware that knowing the truth was not always a good thing.
Using her ability as a sort of a soul information network, Madame was able to learn many things about the Crime Olympics.
They say that Christopher Columbus kept two journals out of fear of being deemed insane by his crewmates: a fake one that everyone else could read freely, and a secret one talking about his true goals. The death count data files similarly used two kinds of information. The true one (what Hikimiya found) allowed the UN to grasp the real situation, and the fake one (the official stats) were displayed to the common man.
To explain why that was necessary, Madame told Hikimiya about the Cosmic Bomb—the Moon. The Bomb was set to fall on August 10th, but it wasn’t impossible that the enemy would drop it earlier if they felt threatened. It was in the world’s best interest to not interfere too much in their plans—to make them think four million people really died each day—before a good way to counter the Cosmic Bomb was established.
As for how Frau D got his hands on secret data, Madame thought the reason was very simple: Frau D was one of RISE’s Dogs, probably responsible for leaking info from DOLL.
Right after this conversation, Hikimiya returned to the hospital for more answers. Frau D stated that Madame was smart enough to understand how to stay alive by keeping quiet. He confirmed that he was a Dog. However, the secret file was not meant for RISE at all, but for Hikimiya. That’s why the password was YUYA, and why the report was addressed to “Desert Colosseum”—once Hikimiya inherited the AI, he would become the next “Desert Colosseum”. The signature D meant Frau D and referred to his identity as a Dog (all of them are designated as D-[numbers], for example Frau is D-159837).
Hikimiya felt like there was something strange about Frau D’s demeanor during that conversation, and only realized a few days later—after the Crystal Nightmare—that the S-detective knew he would be killed soon.
But that wasn’t the last Hikimiya heard from Frau D, as Madame passed him a message from his soul. It was strange hearing Frau D so unusually serious (even if the words came from Madame’s mouth).
Frau D wanted to apologize. The whole “I love you” thing was just another one of his jokes, and he chose Hikimiya solely on the basis of his skills and ability to become the next Desert Colosseum. Thanks to Madame, he was never afraid of death. Aside from RISE, he also belonged to the suicidal sect of DICE, who were the ones to kill him in the end. “Desert Colosseum” was still indispensable to RISE—and that meant they would rely on whatever data Hikimiya would send them in the future.
After relaying the message, Madame commented that Frau D was actually a really serious man; you don’t become an S-detective by acting like a clown. She could speak with him easily so soon after his death, but making contact would get progressively harder with time, so Hikimiya should better become “Desert Colosseum” as soon as possible while he could still get ghostly tips.
It was the first time Hikimiya truly felt respect for Frau D. Though now that he thought about it, maybe even earlier he felt a sort of a strange, begrudging affinity.
On the day Frau D died, news came about Juku, Ronely Queen and Ushiwaka Gigolo. Juku’s death was especially hard on Hikimiya, considering they had worked as partners in the past. Then Firannu Meirunesia died a week later.
Hikimiya of course wanted to talk with the dead detectives, but Madame was so busy with all the cases she had no time to spare, and calling specific souls was hard—her work was mostly just waiting until someone with the right information came to her. Asked about Ryuuguu Jounosuke, she said that she’s sorry, but from what she could see he really was dead. At least she was able to assure Hikimiya that Otohime was still alive, held prisoner by RISE together with Amagi Hyouma and Tsukumo Nemu.
The day Frau D was killed, Hikimiya found a new entry in the database that belonged to a fake F-detective, “Flower Design”. [At least I think that’s the right romanization for that]. Frau must have made that fake detective so Hikimiya could hide behind the identity and obtain information safely. It was hard to work a double job as both “Hikimiya Yuuya” and “Flower Design” behind the scenes, but the exhausting training under Frau turned out to have been a blessing in disguise.
Hikimiya analyzed the death count reports (which by this point reached early March) and found that while in the big picture the number of deaths rose steadily, it actually came in waves. Doing some statistical magic, Hikimiya realized that the death rate usually fell a bit during weekdays, but then rose significantly on each Sunday—right after the Billion Killer cases. Step back, two steps forward… It’s like the Billion Killer served as a periodic impulse that kept the Crime Olympics going. The Crystal Nightmare caused an especially high rise in victims, too.
Hikimiya made some calculations. The numbers were at first much lower than the proclaimed “four million deaths a day”, but if the growth continued, it would lead to a bigger overall number of deaths.
Constant four million a day would give 1,4 billion total deaths in an entire year.
But if the numbers continued to rise, the final figure would instead be 3,7 billion, more than half the world’s population—assuming the Cosmic Bomb wouldn’t kill everyone else.

MOHENJO-DARO

(It was once thought that alchemy could produce homunculi in bottles.
Black Rook is a human obtained through cloning, a three years younger identical twin of Ryuuguu Jounosuke, with whom he shared this name. Yearning for an identity of his own, Black called himself Ryuuou.
RISE had the cloning technology long before his birth, but didn’t see a reason to use it, as getting normal imposters was much easier. They say that everyone has at least three perfect look-alikes in the world—RISE had no problem finding those three with their omnipresent reach.
The truth is that the original Jounosuke was supposed to become Black Rook at first, but RISE made a critical mistake while raising him. In the end, the clone achieved what the original couldn’t and became Black Rook.
Below is Black Rook’s testimony. [Originally in first person. As expected, he might be… biased.])
From what Black heard, his older brother had travelled all over the world with their parents as a young child in order to naturally pick up native accents of many languages. He was successful at this goal, but in the process he became so used to the outside world that he couldn’t stand the dim closed spaces of the Sanctuary (which was back then still under construction), even showing signs of serious childhood claustrophobia. He was constantly upset and kept crying no matter how long RISE tried getting him used to his new life. Childhood claustrophobia sometimes vanished with age, but there was no guarantee it would happen.
In the face of this, the Doctor decided to start anew and cloned the boy, and so Black was born. To avoid past mistakes, RISE made sure he got used to the Sanctuary since birth, the fortress transporting him to all those different countries and essentially becoming his home. Staying in the Sanctuary instead of with foreigners led to him not quite reaching the language mastery of his brother, but the difference was marginal and didn’t really matter.
When RS became the leader of RISE in 1987, Black formally inherited the position of the Sanctuary’s Master from his father Kintarou. Similarly, Endou Naoto became the next Doctor / White Rook after his father Naomasa.
RISE continued to fight their long battle. Black didn’t really understand if there was an objective good or wrong, but he knew for sure that the Beasts wanted to destroy the human race, and RISE’s Gods wanted it to continue in whatever shape. A battle between good and evil.
Their greatest enemy was a secret group called Akutou 666 Rengou (lit. “the 666 villains union”), known in short as Akuren. It was much older than RISE and had been threatening humanity for thousands of years.
Akuren was a worldwide information network created by the 666 most evil people of the world, all their names written down on a secret Luck Black List. Aside from the top 666, there were also two lower “replacement groups”, each also counting 666 members, so 1998 in all. Those who died or were arrested would be erased from the list, though one could always get on it again later. Note that the first group members were too skilled to be eliminated from the list unless they died.
All the historical villains one may have heard of—like Nero, Catherine de’ Medici, Ivan the Terrible, Rasputin, Aleister Crowley, even Hitler—all reached no higher than the second group of Akuren. Those in the first group are all untraceable and take care to erase their pasts, only their horrible impact on the world hinting at their existence, their true nature that of pure evil beyond imagination (Black doesn’t even want to think about the stories he heard).
Akuren categorizes all people on Earth into thirteen tiers of evil, starting from 1 (those unwittingly doing everyday evil), going through those who commit crimes as part of a company policy or “usual” criminals (4-5), through famous organized crime (6), through those with political power (7), through country elites with even more influence (8), through secret organizations ruling those elites (9), through the evil that controls the history of humanity (10), the first group of Akuren (11), the few members of Akuren that have transcended the concept of pure evil (12), and the “ultimate organization of extreme pure evil” (13).
Upstanding citizens are classified as tier 1 (it’s impossible to be lower, as every single human eventually hurts another human, if only by existing). Tier 10 would include Akuren’s first group and half of the second group, together 999 people. Tier 11 would apply only to the first group; they’re so strong that an S-detective could maybe manage one or two of them at once, but not several, and certainly not 666. Tier 12 are those from the first group that aim for even more evil and want to throw the world into darkness. Tier 13 is so secret that even RISE can’t get any information about it, more suspecting their presence than knowing for sure.
The members of every group of Akuren are numbered from 001 to 666, with those numbers moving if someone falls off the list. Number 001 is always the person who stayed in a group the longest, while those from lower groups will enter a higher group starting from 666. Groups two and three have to provide information for the network, but those who already rose to group one are privileged and can simply get data without having to give any in exchange.
Akuren attempted to wipe out the human race many times before, their crimes usually showing as wars on the surface. The Persian Wars, the Peloponnesian War, Alexander the Great’s conquest, the Seven Years’ War, the Hundred Years’ War, various Prussia wars, the Russo-Japanese War, both World Wars, the Cold War…
After WWII, the 12th tier of evil first showed itself, possibly with the 13th one right behind them, and the most serious plan to destroy humanity (including themselves) had been in progress ever since. Their twisted reasoning is basically, “everyone has to die one day, and when I die, the world may as well not exist for me, so why not bring everyone else down with me while we’re at it”.
The current Crime Olympics were conceived as yet another of Akuren’s plans to destroy humanity. RISE was created to gain control over this plan in order to prevent the ultimate tragedy and limit the damage as much as possible. Of course on the surface they still had to act like they’re cooperating with Akuren, and so had to put the Crime Olympics into motion like they were supposed to.
Akuren acted like they didn’t notice their true enemy, but considering the quality of their information network, they had to already know about RISE’s goals. However, RISE was too useful to get rid of it so quickly. Fifty years of preparations passed in a pretend cooperation between the two organizations. RISE has three trump cards in their deck: Alive, the Billion Killer, and the Cosmic Bomb.
RISE’s true goal was purging evil at the root for the sake of humanity’s survival. If they left Akuren alive, it would just lead to another attempt at total destruction in the future. RISE had already succeeded at using the Crime Olympics to kill the lesser ranks of evil in droves, even though it cost a lot of other lives and the true malicious elites were still staying safely hidden. If RISE didn’t kill off those elites before August 10th, the Cosmic Bomb would fall.
Those “worst of the worst” were called Pure Ultimate Beasts. The purest evil often wore the masks of saints; they truly were beasts disguised as humans, creatures that would kill with a smile. The first group of Akuren was too careful to be easily led into a trap, so RISE had to start with eliminating the lower groups and make their way up.
All the above was a very rushed explanation, but the gist of it is that humanity is in a horrible spot. If they don’t do anything, the Cosmic Bomb will fall; if they try to fight openly, perhaps the Bomb will just fall faster. The fate of humanity is in the hands of RISE—of Black Rook.
...but Black feels a bit weird those days, like something is very wrong with him. Perhaps it’s just a lingering symptom of Alive... or perhaps he’d been caught into Akuren’s trap? Something feels wrong. With the Sanctuary, with RISE and with himself. Something is strange. He’s supposed to stop the Cosmic Bomb, and has been for sure making preparations, but now he can’t remember how to do it, as if he simply forgot something so important. He can’t remember… What the hell happened to him? What the hell is going on? It’s like he’s not himself.
Has he also been brainwashed…?
[End of testimony.]

Writer detective XX continues to write. He feels a strange compulsion to do it, a sense of mission, almost like someone is forcing him to write. Sometimes he wonders if he hasn’t been brainwashed.

HONG KONG
--
Writing as “Seiryoin Ryusui” is weird to XX, like wearing someone else’s clothes. He’s been feeling like he isn’t truly himself. But if it’s so weird to him, why does he simultaneously have the compulsion to not just continue writing, but to write as “Seiryoin Ryusui” specifically? Nothing else changed. It’s just that whenever he works as “Seiryoin”, he ceases to be himself. Almost like someone else is guiding his hands, like he’s only the first reader instead of the writer.
Inugami Yasha wants XX to write a book about the Crime Olympic as soon as possible. Yasha’s plan is to use the power of stories positively, to light up at least some of the darkness surrounding them.
No one is faster to rise to fame in mass media than the worst criminals caught red-handed. “Seiryoin Ryusui” wasn’t that popular, but his name is still spread around because of the Cosmic Jokers case, so releasing a book under the same name will gather the world’s attention. This will possibly allow them to lure out the actual mysterious “Seiryoin Ryusui”. The book will be technically fiction, just like Cosmic and Joker, but will give readers enough clues that maybe someone solves the still unfinished mysteries, or gets to the actual truth behind something that has been considered solved.
To be honest, XX hates the writing style in Cosmic and Joker. It just seems bad and unbalanced to him. Strong J Outa the editor thinks it’s because XX has a similar writing style, so reading “Seiryoin” feels to him like reading his own old works, which is rarely a good experience for a writer. The important thing is keeping that unbalanced style while writing about the Crime Olympics.
Languages, just like anything else created by people, aren’t perfect. No matter how much one tries, a recording of events will never be perfect specifically because of the nature of words. Even non-fiction is fiction in the end. Words on their own aren’t the truth, but the moment someone encounters someone else’s words, they may read out the truth between the lines—which is what Yasha hopes for by releasing the Crime Olympics book.
(By the way, it’s been a month since Dokuson disappeared, and not a single Billion Killer case has happened in the meanwhile. There were giant cases happening at 1 PM local time on Saturdays, true, but no symbolic skull has been found.)
XX still can’t get rid of his strange feelings. It’s almost like there’s someone else within him, “the true writer”, perhaps even “the true culprit”. Strong J Outa dismisses these worries and says that in a sense, the mystery writer is always the real culprit manipulating the characters. A mystery novel is not as much a showdown between a detective and a murderer, as a showdown between the writer and the reader. The challenge is not just solving a mystery, but also solving the writer’s intent put in his work.
The idea of the writer as the culprit is sort of a taboo that everyone knows about, but that isn’t really relevant inside mystery novels by design. All fiction is real as far as the world within that fiction is concerned. There’s no reason to escape into delusions about a writer making all this happen; instead XX should focus on writing and fighting crime this way.
19box is set to be finally released on July 5th.

(And in the latest news...)
On June 14th, the entire island of Tasmania suddenly moves towards mainland Australia and smashes into it, resulting in 100,000 dead or injured and several small islands sinking. Right afterwards Tasmania returns to its proper place. How all this happened is a mystery.
On June 21st, about a hundred tourists visiting Mohenjo-daro in Pakistan are found naked and dead. The cause of death is unknown, but the incident is thought to have been influenced by the Carnival Dice cult.
On June 28th, all the power lines of Hong Kong are suddenly cut, leading to a complete power outage. Massive fires start in the aftermath. Giant playing cards are found around the place, so the group F4C is suspected. The situation becomes so bad it leads to political shifts and Hong Kong being completely returned to China.
--
On July 5th, a mysterious continent surfaces from the depths of the Pacific, so unimaginably huge that it takes half the ocean’s area. The continent’s sudden movement causes kilometer-tall tsunamis to rush towards other lands. It’s only a matter of time until the record waves reach the shores and destroy anything in their path.
Japan has twelve hours to prepare for the wave.

GdV6Sn6 is a layered stannide where V-kagome lattice and Gd-triangular lattice coexist. While unconventional magnetotransport is expected by the interplay between the band structure inherent to the kagome lattice and frustrated magnetism, its physical properties are not investigated  since the discovery in 2011 (L. Romaka et al. J. Alloys Compd. 509, 8862, 2011). We have synthesized high quality single crystals and investigated its physical properties by resistivity measurements up to high magnetic fields and the first principles calculations.

Inspired by the mineralogical phenomena “pseudomorphosis”, we have topocheically synthesized pseudo crystal of a spin-1/2 kagome antiferromagnet Vesignieite. Magnetic studies on the crystal revealed the antiferromagnetic state with in-plane weakf-erromagnetic moment, which gives a clue to identify the spin order.

Physical Review Letters, 114, 227202 (2015).
Large and high-quality single crystal of a distorted spin-1/2 kagome lattice antiferromagnet volborthite were synthesized, which enabled detailed magnetic characterizations. We have observed successive magnetic field induced phases including the 1/3 magnetization plateau and a phase without clear magnetic order. A possibility of the realization of spin nematic state is proposed.

“Kagome-Triangular Lattice Antiferromagnet NaBa2Mn3F11”
H. Ishikawa, T. Okubo, Y. Okamoto and Z. Hiroi
Journal of the Physical Society of Japan, 83, 043703 (2014).
Peculiar MnF7 pentagonal bipyramids in NaBa2Mn3F11 constitute a unique frustrated spin lattice that we named “Kagome-Triangular lattice”. Depending on the relative magnitude of nearest-neighbor interaction J1 and next nearest neighbor interaction J2, kagome lattice (J1 >> J2), triangular lattice (J1 = J2), and triangular clusters (J1J2) are realized. We revealed basic magnetic properties based on bulk magnetic measurement and discuss a possible magnetic order. Incommensurately modulated magnetic structure and zero-energy excitation are revealed by subsequent neutron scattering experiments by S. Hayashida.
“Magnetic Properties of the Spin-1/2 Deformed Kagome Antiferromagnet Edwardsite”
H. Ishikawa, Y. Okamoto and Z. Hiroi
Journal of the Physical Society of Japan, 82, 063710 (2013).
We have synthesized a natural mineral Edwardsite for the first time, where spin-1/2 Cu2+ ions form the distorted kagome lattice with large interlayer separations. It exhibits magnetic order with weak ferromagnetic moment at low temperature.
“A novel crystal polymorph of volborthite, Cu3V2O7(OH)2·2H2O”
H. Ishikawa, J. Yamaura, Y. Okamoto, H. Yoshida, G. J. Nilsen and Z. Hiroi
Acta Crystallographica Section C, 68, i41 (2012).
We have discovered a new orbital ordered crystal polymorph of Volborthite by preparing high quality single crystal.

Takaki Yuya - Daimei no Nai Monogatari Romaji and Lyrics Translation
Hallo, I'm back with the translation of Yuya's solo song. As Yuya said before, his solo song would be a ballad song. It's so nice.
And here the romaji and the translation. I got the Kanji lyric from inoochine_411 on twitter. I'm sorry if you find any mistakes in the english translation because literally I'm not the nativ. Please feel free to correct my translation 😄

English Translation
Going on a date, lying together and the hapinnes was overflowed
But your face seems so blurry
I opened my eyes and my fingers looking for you
But just the air and pounding morning that I was grasped
Even in the dream, I can't meet you
Although your voice and your warm was so clear
Why you're not here
If you're just Deja-Vu, however I Love you
Because this unerased feeling is making use of me
Being played with the impossible dream
I don't care, I believe that I want to meet you
Being alone in the broken night, I'm murmuring your name
Lately I didn't see your dream
I sighed searching in the city
I didn't find even your shadow
Did you also looking for me?
The vogue hope seems to be disappear into the darkness of time
If you're just Deja-Vu, however I Love you
Because this unerased feeling is making use of me
Being played with the impossible dream
I don't care, I believe that I want to meet you
One day I will find you
I will hug you, surely won't let you go again
If you're just Deja-Vu, however I Love you
Because this unerased feeling is making use of me
Being played with the impossible dream
I don't care, I believe that I want to meet you
Please wait, I will meet you now
Good night

Zero’s very ideals for what is good and wrong is different from others. Zero was intelligent, cruel and manipulative, and they did not hesitate in doing “necessary evils” for the sake of saving 6 billion people.
His motives were complex and he was not an easy character to understand. Perhaps not to Reiji.
“The end justifies the means”, after all.
[NOTES]  If you are interested in reading, please note there are minor spoilers for the game trilogy Zero Escape, but I’ve left things out of context as much as possible. Otherwise, have a young-ish Reiji. I feel like he’s rarely on my dash actually.
The room was dimly lit by the streetlights from Minami city. The walls in the LSD tower was deadly quiet save for Reiji’s hand tapping on the mouse.
Three monitors, side by side on his desk, showing the documents from Akaba Leo’s laboratory. He leaned back, taking his glasses off while pinching the bridge of his nose in irritation.
That machine… that had transported him to the fusion dimension… there was no proper written document for it. Other than a few notes and journal entries, he wasn’t sure how easy it was the salvage what he had.
He should have tried duplicating another of the same device first.
As he had shut his eyes, it was only then that his eyelids were feeling slightly heavy. Reiji was far from sleepy though, as the thoughts of a few hours prior had ran through his mind.
XYZ dimension…
Synchro dimension…
His thoughts about Akaba Leo’s destructive plan was interrupted when there was a notification from his duel disk.
“Hi Reiji, sorry, you had called earlier?” Yushou’s voice rang through the room as the boy leaned forward to face the screen. Perhaps he was looking a bit too serious, because father continued on. “Did something happen?”
“Yes,” he replied in a curt tone. “I’d like to meet with you, urgently, to discuss about Akaba Leo..”
“...? You’re not referring to him as your father?” Yushou’s eyebrows were raised before he remembered about the boy’s request. Did that mean his son had found his missing partner? “Yes sure… would you prefer somewhere where no one can eavesdrop?”
Within the next few minutes, one of the old labs for Solid Vision was chosen as a meeting location, and the phone call had ended. At this, Reiji stood up as he put on his glasses again.
Next to the keyboard, there was a mess of papers and disks. Half of them were pulled from the downstairs lab right after he got sent back forcibly from the Fusion dimension. Hastily, he started piling them into a pile. While doing so, he accidentally knocked into a small gaming disk.
Zero Escape.
It was one of the few games that he had played more than once, that he knew the entire complex story, and the details for all the puzzles. The face of the hooded figure with the nuclear gas mask stared back at him. [1]
This was the very figure of Zero, the mastermind, and villain in the Zero Escape games.
They were one of Reiji’s favourite characters in the series. Zero was intelligent, seemingly cruel and manipulative. They placed bombs in their kidnapped victims’ bodies, and they had carefully planned an entire game of puzzles for the victims to solve. If they wanted to live, that is.
The mastermind’s motives were complex, Reiji remember when he had reached the final conclusion of the game for the first time. Their very ideals for what is good and wrong is different from others. It didn’t matter if one was friend or foe, they did not hesitate in doing “necessary evils” for the sake of saving 6 billion people.
But the end justifies the means, Reiji thought to himself as he closed the drawer. Just before he left his room, he took out a red scarf and wrapped it around himself. Since it was new, the length was perfect.
His thoughts distracted back to Zero the mastermind again, he almost let out a bitter laugh. A person finding out the world was in danger, to be attacked by another dimension. It was almost the start of a heroic story.
If he were the main character for any story, he’d have to be like Zero, the worst hero. [2]
“Reiji-san?” [3] A familiar voice called from a few rooms down, and Reiji walked a bit faster to see his mother standing by her room door..
She gave a rare smile, that he couldn’t remember when he had last seen. “I knew the scarf would fit you.”
“Yes, thank you for that.” he said. She seemed to be in be in a better mood compared to earlier this morning, but he could see clearly the tired eye shadows. “Have you eaten yet?”
It turned out she hadn’t. Reiji wasn’t even surprised that in the middle of her fits, she had forgotten the time. Akaba Leo hadn’t even a sliver of care when he mentioned about her, this was the same man that Yushou was referring to as his “father”.
“I have a meeting to go to, but it won’t be quick,” he said looking up at the woman in the eye, showing. “After that, shall we eat together, mother? I have things to talk over with you.”
She was delighted as she bade him goodbye with a wave. As he walked away, there was a short moment where his face twisted into agonizing frustration. If only she knew, he wasn’t going to be able to listen to her idle chat tonight.
The ride in the elevator was short, and soon he had reached the front entrance. The reception desk was empty at this time. It was long over business hours, and there were hardly any teenagers on the street when he exited the LSD tower.
A wave of cold wind rushed at him. Reiji tugged the scarf a little tighter and walked towards the other side of the road, just like the other adults here.
[NOTES]
[1] As you can see, I’m using the Zero from 999 and VLR, but the machevillain personality extends to all versions of Zero. I think the most relevant example of Reiji being like this was when he “simply allowed” the Minami Championship duelists to be carded, to prioritize the safety of the local citizens.
[2] The worst kind of main character was actually something the developers had thought for the original Zero in the first game.
Maybe in some AU Reiji is actually the main character instead of Yuya. Because unlike the previous Yugioh series, Arc-v was the first series where there rival character doesn’t have a dragon as an ace-monster. It went to the main character instead.
[3] I decided to leave the honorifics there, because it really felt uncommon for a mother to refer to her son so formally. I could see in the anime how she had trusted his judgement. Reiji’s like the current man of the family I suppose, with Leo gone. O3o
[4] I guess I was trying to hint that Reiji is forcing himself to live up to the standards and expectations as an adult, because he can’t be some naive kid if he’s gotta outsmart Akaba Leo..
